CLARIFICATION ON VIDEO: I mentioned the BO-HI termination into the nakago was a prefered method, would be partially incorrect, while there are historical representations of this done, it was more for other purposes or results. I personally prefer it on this particular sword for aesthetics, abit more weight off the blade that is a heavier dotanuki, and it was executed so well on the nakago. On this sword, for me, it checks all boxes. Thanks for watching all.
Cutting video?
Made a difficult decided not to cut with this one to preserve the polish and its value, thanks for watching
JS Bladecraft, You can call it the Dotenuki Series Katana
part 2 ?
Nope, I decided not to cut with this sword, as the sword is accruing value, I may sell it one day
Huawei does such great work! I know she will be your pride and joy! Definitely the finest katana you have so far.
I thought Skyjiro was until this beauty came along, the Nakago and seamless fit is many steps above Skyjiro I think, they both make great blades, performance driven.
Normally I lost my interest in katana reviews BUT... yours here was different while showing how a sword was made with love and respect. Thanks Joe
I have much respect myself for a maker that puts so much time and effort into making something extraordinary for under 1K. There is alot of pride put into this sword, its been a long minute since I felt so taken back from a katana made like this. so much appreciated are your comments to me Mr. Backyard.
@@JoeSteel1 Welcome Joe... My pleasure to be able to prop kudos
Thank you. I can't believe that's a production katana. Incredible. I've also never seen a habaki that fits like that onto the blade.
It's one of most treasured katana for its benchmark quality, motohara or Citedel are also HIGH quality production katana but are double or triple the price...great value and pride here...thanks for watching friend
The value and quality that you get for the money is actually insane. Spectacular sword and very solid review 👍
Couldn't agree more! and you should know with the pieces you have, They are a group that puts pride and quality craftsmanship above meeting deadlines and honestly they have been overwhelmed as they are a small forge...so people are waiting long periods of time for their swords or even return calls...many people are very annoyed. This same sword is now about 1k on their site.
@JoeSteel1 trust me, I know. I ordered two swords from them and asked for a different ito wrap, and after two years of waiting, they told me they couldn't finish my swords and refunded me. I no longer want to deal directly through them, but I'm open to the second-hand market.
Simular situation, wanted a fully wrapped Samegawa Tsuka, they said they can do it even paid 80.00 more for it....after 1 year said they couldn't do it...as they are set with there way of strip ray skin with wood inlays...in which they do so dam welll...took me 1 year 1/2 for my sword
Your videos are a piece of Art, the sword is a piece of Art, allways a joy to watch , take care brother joe love you
I always appreciate your kind comments Stef. many blessings to you my friend
I have to admit that I'm a complete novice in this field, but as the saying goes, you never stop learning. Always a very nice video! 🔥👋
Miss Vlad, ln this field of swords I am a novice as well, as I learn something new all the time, so much knowledge, history and things to appreciate, we need to always cultivate our craft, thanks for watching
That rubbery coating on the inside might not be traditional, but I'd absolutely be happy with that
its more of an extra shim, maybe because the wood was cut a tad too short, or it acts as a shock absorber for the wood core, not sure what the intended purpose was. On another mind frame, they cared enough to possibly correct a problem. Either way the fit and finish of the sword when assembled is flawless on this sword, so I'm a happy sword guy.
@@JoeSteel1 I assumed they did it to protect the wood. Either way, I like it
I have been waiting 17 months so far. I am encouraged that when my Katana arrives, it will be well worth the wait.
I believe it will be, the wait sucks but there work is top notch
Is nice to see the Hamachi and munemachi in line with each other and not offset. I definitely love the way Huawei takes extra care to fit the habaki. All three of my Huawei have a perfect habaki fit
YES!!!! This is such an important aspect I kicked myself for not mentioning and something you mostly never see done right. thanks for mentioning
@@JoeSteel1 hi, I'm looking for a ninjato or a katana that is straight bladed and not curved. that's around 200 to 500 dollars. Do you know which website I may find one at? And if they can make me a custom made one?
@hero's journey You can customize a Ninjato at swords of northshire for about 356.00 usd, I would say it's a pretty good sword and you can customize to your liking, they are a pretty reputable company with good customer service, there are others but you can start looking there, good luck on your journey and thanks for watching
I have been following your channel from the start. Every video is fantastic. The production, the details you cover, everything is amazing. Please never stop making sword videos.
So much appreciated for your support, one reason that I enjoy being on youtube, Ashley, I will certainly try, to get samples to continue rocking the tube, thank you kindly🙏
Wow, that's gorgeous. Well spoken and clearly filmed review, man. That's a sword to be proud of.
absolutely, and thanks for watching my friend
Gorgeous Blade! I just waited 13 months for my Skyjiro NEW KIKU-NO-HANA (Chrysanthemum) Polished “2018” and that blade was definitely worth it as well.
Glad for you, at this point Skyjiro and Huawei are top manufacturers of quality swords at the just south of 1k mark...its communication that is the issue, if they were upfront as to the real time needed, I would wait for this type of quality...hey Albion tells you minimum 1 year at checkout...but you are assured the upmost quality, thank you kindly
It's very unlikely the "foam insert" is there for protecting anything other than fitment. That plastic material is being used as a spacer probably. Real katana and all other katana make it just fine without this added piece.
I appreciate the time taken to ensure better fit even though I prefer it need not be there in the first place. Very few companies take the time here. Good job Huawei! A few weeks ago, my Dragon Sword (two actually) arrived. One of them had this piece of white plastic being used as a spacer just like yours. Funnily enough, although Dragon Sword, the spacer said Zsey. One company or two, friends or whatever... Dragon Sword are REALLY nice swords even next to some of my $~2000 swords. I'm going to order two Zsey here really soon. Your videos on them got me interested. You are one of my favorite reviewers, thanks for all the hard work.
Definitely buddy and thanks for the kind words....I know they are most likely spacers for a more secure fit, but I wanna believe that they can also act as a protective layer on the wood tsuka pushing into the Fuchi especially when pushing into place....but either way so much credit to Huawai for the effort they put into a very close to perfect fit & finish better that I've seen on any production sword in that price point...be well and thank you👊👊👊
That is an absolutely beautiful katana, 😍 🤩 👌 ❤️ 💖 💕
It is really a fine piece, I'm learning not to pay attention to steel, the reputation of the company is more important to me now...I only learned it was T10 when I made the review, thanks for watching John, hope you are well.
Absolutely stunning blade. Great execution on the kissaki
I am extremely pleased thus far YoTo, and your opinions and comments are very valuable to me, much appreciated and thanks for watching!
Hey man, I got my Huawei Dotsnuki…way sooner than I expected…..you’re spot on, it’s an incredible sword, I absolutely love it.
Very happy that it came quickly so from the order to your door how long did it take? I can only speak for the one I have in my hands at time of reviewing but glad your replica was also up to quality standards...awesome!!!!
@@JoeSteel1 it took a total of about 14 weeks, much shorter than the year I was prepared to wait. Damn that’s a gorgeous sword….
Awesome Joe , Keep rockin brother !!!
Thanks brother Dwayne
nakago and blade is so beautiful i love that polish and hamon ,i love mokko tsuba and copper koshirae
Thank you kindly for watching, yes there is much to appreciate on this sword
The long awaited review of the long awaited sword, love all the copper, looks like you got you’re money’s worth,..very, very nice!
was worth the wait I gotta say, if I was to order another one, and they told at the start it would take a year I would wait....let's not forget an Albion sword is 1 year minimum wait time....you can't rush quality if that's what their intentions are...
Yes my friend, quality is something that cannot be rushed, all the copper up front, the gorgeous finish on the iron, a “down right legendary” hamon,…all for under a grand,….great review, thanks for showin’😉
Love the dojo background! Really nice sword. I like the shock absorber in the fuchi, that’s a good idea,i think ill use that.
That's called my dream room, when I'm dreaming at night that's what my dojo would look like...lol....yes its a great idea, protects the wood core and I believe it helps keep the sword secure itself tightly, simply brilliant, a first for me...
you should test out the mini katana tameshigiri seires
If they send me one as a sample I'll be glad to
@@JoeSteel1 glad to see you with an open mind
This is a truly stunning sword, but I think some points are not valid. Esp. regarding the elaboration on the tang: 1) the bo-hi being shorter has the advantage that dirt is less likely to get under the habaki 2) shorter bo-hi is more work since they need to make a more perfect end-point; the bo-hi is machine polished. Therefore it was little additional effort to grind it in after filing the tang 3) the "pride" is in the blade. finishing the tang is a lot easier than polishing the blade to this finish and bringing the hamon out 4) the tang is meant to be rust, normally nihontos are held with the bare hand at the tang which builds patina and allow to date it even centuries later - is different for museum pieces. - In any way great and very beautiful sword!
I respectfully disagree but I very much appreciated your comments and view

Definitely worth the wait. Dotanuki are usually very kissaki heavy, but that bohi should balance that out nicely. Everything looks good. Glad I got mine back in the good old days. From China to my door in 10 days. Still remember the day she came. Got stuck closing, then got home and there was nowhere free to unbox, but once I held in hand, it made a terrible day awesome.

Hi Joe, Wow, what an amazing sword very specisl, thanks, take care
Special indeed, thank you...how are things in your town, internet still down, family ok?
Surprised you didnt bring up the cracked Tsuka. Unless I missed it somewhere in the video. That is considered a fatal flaw in a tsuka. Needs to be remedied.
My friend, I don't know what your referring to. There are no cracks on this Tsuka, its just short of perfect
@JoeSteel1 5:46 you can see a split in the tsuka on the mouth of the tsuka by the mune (spine).
I can't wait to see your follow up videos with this blade!!!
Time is my current enemy my darling...lol
Awesome custom sword , great presentation , very well done , thanks for sharing , God bless brother !
Thank you kindly Michael, many heart felt blessings to you as well
Beautiful Sword wow~
She truly is very well made... thanks for watching
I got my Huawei in 2019 and just like you I am blown away. I would soo much like to get another one but they do not even answer my e-mails. Not sure if they are actually still making anything?
So dam upset about it, I could not get an answer as well, I don't even want to cut with mine to preserve it, I would say keep on trying as I will...would love another sword from them...thanks for watching my friend
Awesome review looking forward to the cutting sessions
Thanks Paul, but I decided to preserve this sword and not cut with it...it has become a valuable sword given the make and very Long wait to receive one. Became a very desirable piece
Two mekugi are not always a sign of a low quality fitting. I have a two citadel katana. Both have perfect handles, probably better than the Huawei seen here. They use two pegs... mostly a safety thing I think.
That's not what I was implementing, one peg is a very traditional design that was dominant on ancient swords that I appreciate seeing...When the tsuka is drilled with one hole, it also forces the smith to do extra work in balancing the nakago to fit the tsuka making for a great quality fit...you can make the argument that 2 pegs is safer, which in many cases it can be...there are many Huawei models that do have 2 pegs...and I will never argue the quality of citadel as they are on a different level in quality and price.....the bottom line is for what this sword is priced at you are getting truely wonderful craftsmanship.
Joe, I have to admit, I'm a little jealous, lol 😆 That is a beautiful sword brother! I'm glad it finally made it across the pond, and into your possession.
😆😆it's definitely a prized sword, and I much appreciate owning it....I almost don't want to cut with her but you know I will....lol...glad I never canceled the order, quality must not be rushed, patience is your reward
Awww yeah been waiting for this vid!and so far I'm 6 min. in and your doing a great job. The tsuka core looks really well done! 👌 As far as I know, if a tsuka has panels of samegawa they carve sections in so the samegawa is inset. I have never seen panels just set on the tsuka core without sections chiseled in for them. Even though Huawei fittings (habaki, seppa, fuchi, kashira and menuki) are very plain they are done well for sure. Ok back to the show. Lol! I'm sure I'll be leaving a bunch more comments as I go haha
Most production swords of the norm don't put in that effort to carve a section for the same to sit on so it's seamless under the ito, very impressed, I'll trade time for quality any day, the pieces are so clean and well done, sometimes over embellishments just give you a sloppy mess
@@JoeSteel1 I think they do chisel out sections. Like I said I've seen many many lower end katana with panels and all have had chiseled out sections for the samegawa. They definitely weren't as perfectly chiseled as Huawei but they were there. Do you own any katana that the samegawa panels was just glued to the core without sections chiseled out for them?
yes SON swords, hanwei, and some jkoo but my latest jkoo was done better, personally I have seen such good care like this in that aspect
Beautiful sword my brother! Fit and finish is top notch!
Definitely at this point the finer quality swords in my procession, you get what you pay for at times but feel I'm getting better than their price tag with this company, CS. is so bad though...thanks for watching Mr. Pete
Joe over here giving Matthew a run for his money. 🙂 Great video, shots, production & commentary, man.
Much appreciated for the privileged comparison but Mr. Matthew's practioner status and shear knowledge of the sword craft is worlds above, another level...
Brother I'm going to have to watch in a couple different parts but the blade is just fantastic from what I see dude I'm really kind of taken with it!
Thank you kindly my brother, it truly is, have never been so impressed with a sword as this one thus far
That is a nice touch on the rayskin but for the price I think it should have a full wrap
You know I said the same thing but their specialty is the way they do there panel wrap, and after seeing how well they shaped and carved the same in the tsuka, I understood...the problem with full wrap is, it is hard to get a well shaped and slender handle...especially if it's not done well...
Man that is absolutely beautiful. I love the copper Habaki. Very good attention to detail all around. A great intro to this Katana Joe, I love it. The macro lens showing the Hamon was beautiful. The copper just brings something out that just sets it off. Nice purchase and a very beautiful blade.
Much appreciated for the great comments, so glad you appreciate the beauty of fine work, when a company, wether it be US, China or India takes pride in their work...thanks for watching my friend,, YES the copper accent really brings in the beauty
The tachikaze is very loud which means the bo-hi was done at the optimal depth. And i wouldnt say the bo-hi traveling into the tang is the "proper way." I've seen lots of Nihonto where the bo-hi started at the habaki and even an inch or so in front of the habaki. It all depends on the Smith and or the customer or how the Ryuha prefers it.
I've researched examples and soken to some people who know alot more than I do, and that is a preferred method to execute the Bo-Hi when the swordsman needs the optimal balance especially on a heavier Dotanuki blade, whatever it is I do prefer it if its proper or not, its an appreciated aspect to the bare blade, and I do feel the sword distributed much better, it's like a heavy cutter that is light in the hands feel. The only thing I fear is water travel down past the habaki so I m sure I will disassemble after any water bottle cuts to clean it
@@JoeSteel1 oh yeah I forgot this is a Dotunuki (torso cutter) katana. Sorry bout that. My bad. 🙄 please excuse my absent mindedness. So yeah, with a heavier/thicker blade like this the bo-hi into the nakago is definitely the way to go to make the katana more balanced.
@@JoeSteel1 Dōtanuki is a Japanese swordsmithing school developed in the Higo province of Kyūshū
during the Kamakura period. The Japanese kanji for dōtanuki translates to, sword that cuts
through torsos. While samurai routinely tested their blades on the bodies of convicted criminals
to judge their cutting ability, dōtanuki blades were renowned for cutting through the bodies of
armored opponents.
The thick wide body blades were forged in both bohi (with groove) and no hi (without groove)
styles, although the solid no hi blades were by far the most common. The dōtanuki's thickness
and durability helped them obtain their vicious reputation during the Japanese conquest of
Korea where they were heavily used by daimyō Katō Kiyomasa's personal samurai. Their
popularity peaked during the Azuchi-Momoyama (1568-1600) period, and began to fade
rapidly thereafter as Japan entered a period of relative peace and stability.
The dōtanuki style was all but forgotten until Japanese manga writer Kazuo Koike reintroduced
it the famous 70's magna series Lone Wolf and Cub. The ronin Ogami Ittō uses a dōtanuki
blade in his quest for revenge on the Yagyū clan.
Hahah...thats some great information, that I do appreciate, I looked up the same but I didn't think people would be interested, my videos are Long as it is...but that shit is so interesting to me...I love learning about Japanese sword culture....so then I need some stacks of bodies to cut for tests you say???? for the youtube record...just kidding..😆😆😆
What a beauty I'm super jealous (the good kind)
glad you got such a good piece! I'd probably only go for cutting noodles and tatami if it were mine though just coz the polish is so nice :)
also concurred about the menuki,
I've heard people say they like them on the inside of the palms, but they're supposed to be under your fingertips side to provide purchase / grip,
its just some menuki a better shaped then others for that purpose and some can be a bit too bulky.
also very impressed by the level of detail on the tang.
Has to be the new favorite I'm sure.
It is stated, as Tamashagiri polish, not too mirror like, which I prefer, if I cut bottles at all, they would only be soft plastic not to scratch the surface, but by the look of the quality, it should just clean off. The menuki placement, hysterically has been both sides I believe but placed under finger tips is a preference of mine...Definitely is one of, if not finest quality katana, very impressed with it thus far...thanks for your support Joske.

Haha...I think jerbs beat ya...to the click
The tang of the blade. Do you guys think it's a long lasting thing and won't loose itself over time? I heard that tang on blade is always not a good thing. I really would like to get this sword for iaito practice.
I'm sorry not clear as to what your asking, do you mean the nakago on a Japanese sword?
Not sure why your asking if it is not a good thing, maybe there is some miscommunication here...but the sword would not be a good iaito sword as its Dotanuki and on the heavier side but still balanced well, you will need a light and nimble sword and also not a sharpened live blade
@@JoeSteel1 Thank for your replay. I meant that the blade is darker than usual clear metal. How much is weight of this sword? I think you are right that it is heavy for iaito. Do you have any recommendation for the swords for iaito with the same quality and look as this one in your video? I would appreciate it. And also it looks like all huawei swords are now out of stock and waiting list is months long...
By the way, we use real sharp swords in our iaito Katori Shinto Ryu practice.

In your opinion is a jkoo, Han Wei or huawei company better?
Thats a long answer friend, while they are all sword retailers there are differences in services and options
Hanwei is one the longest running that offers mostly stocked swords that can be ready to ship in many different price points and also offer euros, starter swords to expensive , generally good fit and finish and they make some must own classics like the practical XL a robust hard cutter
Huawei produces high-quality for those who want some of the best made swords on the production market at a generally fair price, they also have been known to have a long wait up to a year.
Jkoo offers custom build options where you can choose parts to create your own sword, they can either deliver a very good sword or have flaws. still one of the best in options and overall quality.
It all depends on what you want and why you want it and what budget you have...so much more to discuss but that's the best answer I can give you here..thanks for watching
@@JoeSteel1 thank you
How hard is it to add an antique or custom tsuba to that katana?
The only way I would change the tsuba is if it waa custom made for the bare blade, cause the fit and finish is so incredible that I wouldn't F$%k with it
@@JoeSteel1 I hear ya. I wonder if anyone has made a video on this. It'd be nice to customize an antique tsuba to a new blade.
The side holes on this Huawei tsuba bug me since the saya lacks the utility knife & the other tool that fit through those holes when being withdrawn or secured back into the saya.
@@utubepunk probably not too hard, as long as the Nakago ana (Tang hole) in the tsuba is big enough

I ordered one of these a couple of weeks ago, zero communication so far. Uncertain how I’ll be able to live with these conditions for an entire year….
Steve best advise I can give you is forget about it, it's gonna be a long wait dude, and don't expect communication or status updates...email Jacky when 6 months passes and see where there at, takes a while but he will get back to you, CS is not their strong suit, but when it does get completed, rejoice as you will have an extremely well made, close to Japanese-like katana, wonderful swords crapy CS. it is what it is dude, curious though as to how long it takes now as they moved to a bigger location, keep me in the loop....oh and which did you order?
I ordered the exact one you have there, for the new current pricing of $849. I don’t mind waiting, and I’ve seen a lot of discussion about their subpar CS so I was prepared, but some kind of order confirmation, something acknowledging my order would be cool.
Apologies, I forgot to say how stoked I felt that your review gave such high marks to the katana I just bought, and your review was as comprehensive and well done as could be.

i have the same one with no-hi
Excellent, how does it feel in your hands in terms of weight distribution and balance
@@JoeSteel1 the feeling is not bad i havent felt the one with no-hi so i cant compare but the balance is good for me maybe not for others cause i tend to like heavier blades but again the balance was good i can feel the weight but the blade it self wasnt hard to stop for a sword that has no-hi its actually quite nimble i havent checked the weight distribution
Would a T10 or say a 1095 or 1060 be a stronger material? I think you mentioned this one was a T10
T10 is very good durable steel for katana and cutting, although new popular steels out there like L6, S5, S7 are steps above...but at the end of the day the steel is never as important as the skill of the smith, Forge that heat treated it correctly...yes this sword is T10, Dotanuki which is a very rigid geometric for durability

Thank you for your comments, but having everything positive compared to the level of craftsmanship on Huawai pieces is a different premise and that is what is paid for. You need to look with different eyes to see the amount of detail and work that is performed, these swords are on a different level. Now if that is worth one spending the extra money is an individual thing. As far as the full wrap, there are many historical examples of well made panel wraps with the expert wood cut outs as thet have done so well. The work on this and the nakago alone is on a different level from less expensive katana. There is a difference from satisfactory and exceptional, again if that is worth it is up to the buyer, Huawai is one of the finest katana makers in their price Point.
I bought a huewei in 2015 or so and it cost around 400 or so. bo hi and so hi. came bent, they said that having a bent sword is normal from their production and is normal handmaking variation. I kid you not. otherwise a beautiful sword, but its bent
That's the most ridiculous thing I ever heard...probably one of the first aspects of a blade that's checked is if it's perfectly straight, never heard of that being accepted as a bi product...
It's a shame they've basically fallen off the map. Their ebay store is gone, and everything has been out of stock on their website for ages, with no word on what's going on.
Have to look into that, unfortunately they wouldn't be the only company falling to the times, Zsey is also having difficulty in staying open and serving the states and other countries.....Huawei is definitely special in terms of the type of quality and dedication above the norm...I still say they produce amoung the best overall quality in their price range...
Man I wish the habaki fit perfectly around the bohi not a major difference but the fit and finish would’ve been that much higher
On the contrary the Supreme fit of the Habaki is a highlight of this sword, its just about flawless, it is not uncommon for the bohi to terminate past the Habaki and they did it very well, in that regard. thanks for watching
Take my money now 🙏🏻😭
😂😂😂I'm not taking your money but yeah I know the feeling, they make some great swords
@@JoeSteel1 I am buying one
@BDoNTheMagician Good for you but if you can get through the ordering process, be patient as it can take up to and over a year to get it, although someone commented sooner on this video of late, don't flood them with status emails they have been known to refund orders...but when u get it, it will be worth it...good luck, let them know video brought you over to them...thanks
@@JoeSteel1 even if the website says in stock??? + Either way, I'm willing to wait because they seem to be heirloom quality And I will tell them you sent me 😁
@@JoeSteel1my sword has shipped hope to have it soon 😁
Stop saying Gadana, its kah tah nah
ok there Language police,🤣🤣 get your own channel and say it how you want..It's Katana with a New York flare..
Amazing blade Im going to order one but on huaweis site it doesnt give the weight without saya. Do you know the weight?
Sword is 2.14 pounds without the saya, she is Dotanuki so she is more robust in the blade. highly recommended but expect a long wait, up to 1 year or more
