Thank you so much for showing the results of the abusive tests. Cloudhammer clearly does impeccable heat treatment with their S5 steel, absolutely top of the game in terms of blade durability in today's katana world. I would like to see their S5 blades pitted against Howard Clark's L6 blades in a death battle of durability.
That's a good one...but gotta say if I had s Howard Clark blade I would only be cutting Air molecules 😊😊😊 but I will pin this S5 against another brands S5
The Black Lotus S5 is absolutely phenomenal. Ito is rock solid. Fittings are crisp and gorgeous. The shape of the tsuka is exquisite. Best money I've ever spent on a sword.
@JSBladecraft thank you for this video. Because of it, i discovered RVA and was able to go in person to and purchase some quality swords. Ended up getting two, one was an S5 Kodachi. Look forward to trying it out
That's awesome, you were able to go there in person...so much more satisfying...glad I was able to help...Those RVA guys are good people, send them my best
@@JoeSteel1 will do! I will certainly be going back. So much better to be able to handle and personally inspect a new weapon. Mr. John was very knowledgable and i greatly enjoyed talking to him.
It's amazing that the traditional way of forging katana still exists. However, I think even the samurai would have wanted a S5 katana 😁 The dream would be a S5 with clay tempered hamon 😮😮
Great point! Agreed made a video argument in a short regarding how more formidable the Samurai would have been with the access to these super steel. the nature of S5 Is to be through hardened so clay tempering would weaken the blade. but yes would look nice
Mine was fully sharpened, could have been sharper, sure but definitely a sharp enough factor edge to cut well,I will repair some chips from hard use, and see how easy or hard it is to bring it to a very keen edge.
subscribed off this video! im looking forward to RVA katana restocking the s5 black lotus so i can grab one! theyre only about 15 minutes from my house so that will be nice.
Nice testing. I have the S5 Kodachi and it is pretty nice. Has a few minor problems at the moment, but they can be fixed. It is really fun to practice with because it is short and light.
I bought a blade from what I was told was a craftsman in Japan. It wasn't extremely expensive, but I'm wondering how I can get an expert's opinion of what it is?
Well see so far the edge is good still...but technically the edge retention is good but not the best it excells in toughness, absorbs impacts so freaking good, with no cracks or bends...thus far....definitely a Steel to be reckoned with in 24
I want Cloudhammer to offer a "Premium" line of S5 swords. Doeskin leather. Full wrap Samegawa with emperor node. Patina-finished sukashi tsuba. I'd pay double their current pricing. Great video. The S5 is absolutely the way to go in 2024.
Unless there are nails in the wood it should be fine, the only thing that might happen eventually is the nakago or tang would shift from the friction, but everything is still pretty tight on this...and blade is fine...its a strong steel but everything has its limits, this happens to be alot higher than orhers
This steel really impressed me...its uncommonly tough...She will handle Katanaland with no issue, question how is the edge retention compared to the t10s, 1095, L6 ect.
@@JoeSteel1 Eric had it and sharpened it before i got it ive cut a few times with it and haven’t needed sharpening yet.about the same as L6 with the extra bonus of not bending.
I love the Navy blue & black color scheme Joe; this was a great review and I love the detail that was put into the design. Also, the website you bought this from, do they have pirate cutlass or Rapier swords?
How are they going to go from having kashira that hangs out proud of the ito, to now having the ito overlap the outside of the kashira? I mean its better the new way of course so thats good. Hopefully they saw past criticisms and are now fundamentally changing their handle designs...hopefully?
If they are not gonna, or able to perfectly line it up, then overlap of ITO over KASHIRA is WAY better, the metal overlapped cap won't cut into your palm. Kudos for absolutely listening to criticism to improve products
@@JoeSteel1 I know what you mean I also have a jkoo it's very nice I only paid $300 for my Ronin Dojo pro .... And it has Buffalo horn ... So I was a little upset with cloudhammer for not including Buffalo horn on a $700 sword
Different properties, S5 is more corrosion resistant, and is a shock steel, Vanadis is more like MAGNACUT and I don't think it would be a suitable steel for swords
Don't think that is the case brother, this was the first sample I've seen from them in over a year...and I review and talk about what's in my video scope, my recommendation is always to keep options open.
@@JoeSteel1not really, historically they aready have very good swords compared to their neighbors, the problem is logistics, just like how invading japan is hard, so is japans power projection, since they have to cross the same sea.
why sk5 should be a super steel? is not and is not what i'd put on blade. expc a katana that is not the sharpest and strongest sword at hand. Better go with a 1060 or, for good looking, the same sandwich of mild steel and a hard steel for the core. but again....is a katana.
Hard to follow what your saying words are a little jumbled but I think your saying there are other steels that work better for a Katana, which is valid depending on what the customer wants/needs and can afford
If you listened and paid attention to the video at all, which you obviously did not. you would know THIS is Shock Steel, and one of the purposes of the company sending me this sample is to hard test it on materials and elements to demonstrate the resilient properties of the steel, after ofcourse the normal cutting was performed, unstood there JUMP-TO-CONCLUSION-LARRY..??? Good day to you.
AND YOU DONT THINK IN THE HEAT OF BATTLE, THERE WAS NEVER A SITUATION OF SWORDS SLAMMED AGAINST EACH ORHER OR FELL AND SLAMMED DOWN ON STONE...OR ARE YOU JUST COMMENTING ON WHAT YOU KNOW FROM MOVIES???😅😅😅
I think this blade is perfect. Any blade that don’t scratch lose its edge and can take a beating is what I want most out of this katana
It's some really good steel for a katana just not the most. Astecthicly pleasing as it cannot have a clay tempering hamon

Hopefully the smith put his signature on the nakago, the tang, and then you would have to get info on him...or speak to an expert

If I tried to chop a dry log with this, would it chip or break the blade? Would it do much to the log?

Xoxoxoxo Karl my friend, yes S5 looks to be the hot steel right now
you can hit the spine on mono steel, you cant hit a differential treatment steel due to the shock transfer to the hardened section breaks the blade
Through hardened is def. Tougher than DH blades, but not all TH. blades can handle that stress like S5
