Wow very impressive demo! This is an awesome comparison!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Amazing playing and killer tone! I have both and both sound great but the Script 74 is the way to go to really nail the EVH tone.
Thanks for doing the side by side. Personally I find the 74 warmer, thicker and the mid range is better whilst the EVH has a very sterile sound. Great playing.
Thanks and my pleasure! I personally favor it for those same reasons and it will stay on my studio board. The EVH is great on my live board with the LED and a little less noise. 🤘
I agree. I have both, and I find myself favoring the '74. Let's all remember ... Eddie Van Halen himself used the original script logo Phase 90 for ALL of VH's early stuff ... And he kicked a** with it! 👍😉
Thank you for the comparison and the great playing. I am buying a Phase 90 basically for VH, so this was great... Closing my eyes and listening to the video, it's close, but there is a winner... Twice the '74 re-issue evoked a certain memory/feeling where I thought, "That's the sound!"... So, for my low level of skill, they sounds close, but the re-issue still wins. ... Unfortunately there is now a massive expectation on you to (please) do a similar VH comparison between the MXR Flanger models (including an original with the SAD1024) ;-) Thanks again.
Thanks and my pleasure, Andrew! I like how describe that - I feel the same way about it. Noted about the flanger comparison - I don’t own those at the moment, but I’ll keep my eyes out for them. Rock on!
great video 9 stars! No fuss no muss. all those other people talk and talk and talk....just what needed. Oh, BTW, really rocking riffs! love your playing.
I have a 74 script Analogman modded Phase 90 but one of my very first pedals 20 years ago was an EVH Phaser and I loved it and used on gigs and sometimes would just leave it on the most subtle setting and it wasn’t really noticeable but it added a little something extra to my tone. Same goes for Vibrato. But man that Les Paul is a beauty. I was always a Strat guy until I really planes and played a good 61 SG and it was hard to go back to the Fender and I love both but Gibsons just scream in a way Fenders don’t but I think you can get more tones out of a Fender with all the pickup choices. Great video!
Thanks, man! Well said and I’m constantly bouncing between fender types and Gibson types for those reasons. What do like about m the analog man mod? (Hadn’t heard about it until now)
Finally, a good vid on the phase 90 pedals. I liked both. For live use the EVH has less noise than the script & since I play live more than record I'll probably go for the EVH, but your vid makes it hard to choose one over the other. BTW, great tone & playing. Kudos.
Indeed - they both get the job done and while there are some subtle differences, I found them more similar than different. Good suggestion on muting the delay. Thanks!
Thanks for doing this comparison. BTW, that’s some awesome playing! The ‘74 sounds much closer to the EVH riffs. Have to say I’m disappointed with the EVH version. And I know that the older script versions are not easy finds. But if you are gonna do EVH tributes, that is apparently what is needed. Love the tone on that Friedman! Gives the EVH heads a run for their money 👍😉
Thanks, John! Glad you enjoyed and appreciate your comments. I agree. There’s definitely something about the script that’s just right. I’d love to try an older version some day! Had an EVH amp briefly and no complaints, but I really connected with Friedman - it feels incredible under the fingers too! 🤘
Thanks! The differences are subtle to me as well and I think both do a great job. I would say, ‘74 if you like a little more warmth and EVH if you like a little more clarity / less noise.
@@RatherBeRiffing If anything, I noticed the EVH to have a little bit of compression going on. Do you reckon the analogman mod will have less noise? I’m really torn between these two pedals. I’ve also read that the EVH and the regular script phase 90 have the exact same chip inside. I even saw a modded phase 90 script at Reverb to have a switch like the EVH has. If that’s really the case, I’d rather get the phase 90 script for being cheaper, with led, and a DC input coz I really don’t like the sound of the phase 90 block.
I’m not familiar with the analog man mod, but the noise is most apparent only when I stop playing and leave the pedal on. I don’t think you can go wrong between the two you are considering. Agree to avoid the block logo as that does a different thing. Good luck with your choice and enjoy! (they can do cool quasi univibe / Leslie sounds too).
Hey! Yes, this version only has battery option. However, I do run it off a power supply with a 9 volt attachment. I heard some prefer the tone of a battery, but I've never tested this.
I don't know who you are, but my God man, you are a machine on that guitar!
Thanks, man! Much appreciated! 😁🤘
Unbelievable playing... as well as a great comparison. I salute you sir.
Thank you - I appreciate the kind words!

One of, if not the best demo I've seen of these pedals. Dude your such a great player as well, fantastic stuff🖖
Wow - thanks for the kind word and glad you enjoyed the demo! 🤘
@@RatherBeRiffing dude, forgot to ask. Which phase 90 are you using on the intro piece to your demo? , if you can remember that is.
It was the script 👍
@@RatherBeRiffing thanks for the info, sorry getting bact to you late. I'm based in the UK so time zones and all of that 👍
You have the soul of the 80’s sound witching you, I hope you know that, very few know what I mean.
Thanks! I try to play with as much soul as I can - 80’s included! 🤘
Best 'effing demo I've seen on these pedals! 5 stars!
Thank you!
Totally addicted to these tones
What skill.
Thanks, Joseph!

Fantastic review and great playing, thank you! The 74 all day for me, that's the sound.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed. It’s the one I would keep if only one.

Awesome playing. Funny how the non-EVH Script Phaser sounds more like EVH than the actual EVH model.
Top Demo,
Thank you 😎🎸
My pleasure - thank you! 🤘
Fantastic video! Thanks for this!!
Thank you! My pleasure.
Thanks for the noise comparison. I get an LFO ticking sound with my 74 .. I don’t hear it with your one.

@@RatherBeRiffing - You're very welcome & thank you.
Hi why is the evh it less noise live ? Great playing ur playing inspired me a lot!
I just wish I could play like that period. Maybe one day before I die at my old age.
Great tone man, and very helpful demo. EVH is a bit more defined to my ears but both sound great 👌👍
Thanks, man! Glad it was helpful. I perceived the same 🤘👍
I have Zakk wylde phase... I think evh is a bit smoother to hear.. can Anyone tell how they compare?
beautiful les paul, great playing too
Many thanks!
I actually noticed a big difference between the two which surprised me.
I like them both but would pick the 74 Script
Thanks for sharing. I keep the 74 script on my studio board, which gets the most use these days 👍
74
What’s that riff at 3:03? Sounds killer. Maybe ghost?
Thanks, man! I made that riff up on the spot to showcase the phaser 😁.
Excellence ❤❤❤❤
Thank you!
is the evh pedal set on “vintage” mod?
Yes (although the LED stopped working)
The '74 sounds the best. I've got a '74 reissue analogman on the way. I wanted to be able to plug it in and not rely on batteries
Very alike. I'd prefer to not hear the delay to really tell the difference.
Indeed - they both get the job done and while there are some subtle differences, I found them more similar than different. Good suggestion on muting the delay. Thanks!
Great playing ! 🤘🤘🌩
What is the best for playing van halen ?? The EVH Or the 74 ?? in your opinion
Thanks! I think the 74 is more authentic to original EVH tones.
Unbelievable 🎸🎸🎸
What is your signal chain for MXR phase? Before or after overdrive?
Thank you! Phase was before drive.
What’s he playing at 3:09?
Hey man - that’s just a random riff in drop D that I made up on the spot during the demo.
@@RatherBeRiffing Sounds amazing man keep it up

Awesome and really cool !!
What’s that song you played at first in this vid?
Thank you! I composed the song at the start.
2:58 I’d cry from happiness if someone did a tab of this riff
It’s so beautiful…
Use your eyes and ears thats all you can do :(
great demo. if it is a tie on sound, the evh wins due to its lower noise.
Thank you! Definitely an advantage with the EVH.
You make both pedals sound so great it’s really hard to choose 🤔

The SCRIPT!!!!! EVH seemed borderline noisy and not as versatile as the script, it will do VH to Zep! great vid! Thanks!
Thanks! Indeed - script is a classic for a reason.
I think I’d prefer the EVH with the script button off. Both were too subtle for my taste.
That’s a cool sound too. I wish I had thought to include that in the comparison.
Strangely enought the Script 74 sounds more like EVH
Agree!
I like the '74 Reissue better
Killer pedal 👍

in which mode is evh90 working?
Script mode
My mode button’s blue LED stopped working long ago
Did you first learn electric guitar on a Tele?
personally liked the EVH
Great pedal and been on my live board for years 👍.
I have just bought the EVH pedal. The low noise and clarity was the deal breaker. Great comparison video.
@@davidlloyd9598 Awesome, man. Glad the video helped seal the deal!
What a killer amp. Even the cleans are magnificent. Did you do the reverb and delays in Cubase?
Thank you! Delay and reverb in the amp fox loop and with additional plate reverb added in Cubase 👍
El phase antes de la distorsión literalmente parece como si no hubiera efecto, se escucha mal, es mejor despues de la distorsion
74 script is ALOT chewier and more present. I have the same year BE100.
Evh phase 90 cuts through the mix better, it's the same sound on Eddie's early records.
Ridiculous playing-i’ll stick with my orange 74 model
Thanks, man! Tough to beat the ‘74 🤘
