Overall it came out really good. There's a couple things I would do differently and the rear tires do rub a little bit but I'm pretty happy with it. The electronics install is beautiful!
Great video, love these little groms, I also had switched mine over to longer arms this past weekend for speed runs because I broke 3 front shaft pins . When I hit a 100 with it,I will turn it into a basher and have fun, lol, awesome video, keep em coming.
Naturally working at a hobby shop I dropped the 10-07 combo in mine Mojave Grom day one. Destroyed all the cvd/axles lol. We don’t have the upgraded Mojave length shafts so I really debated doing what you did with yours to mine since we have those parts in stock lol. Awesome stuff!
Super cool conversion. I put the 1/16 redcat volcano tires on my granite grom. They are bigger than the granite tires and alot more nubbage. I bet they would be brutal on this build
Unfortunately without doing chassis modification I'm not sure how much bigger you could get. The rear tires already rubbed the chassis on the front. I'm sure it could be done but it wouldn't be as simple as just trimming the body more
i guess i was behind time. the up grade was awesome. i glad to see you do this upgrades. you did it for me.. lol. great video and detailed as usual. nice work. ill be looking for the next vid. Have fun.
Great as always! Do you think the with and tires swap is worth it if you want a granite grom but think the original one is a bit too small? And maybe another bodywould fit without having to trim it? Maybe no other body fits without mods
Do you mean putting bigger tires on the Grom or putting different tires on the Mojave. If it's on the Mojave you're going to have to trim the body pretty much no matter what. As far as different bodies in the Mojave I'm sure it's possible but the included body is pretty specifically designed to fit the car so it would be a custom job for sure
An extremely cool project! I really want to put that castle system into my MJX hypergo! talking about the Mojave - I am really interested in the speed it can do on its stock tyres. Is it possible to make such a test in one of the next videos? :)
I probably won't be doing anymore MJX 10208 videos. After a certain point it becomes diminishing return as far as views and what not are concerned though I'm sure other people have done stock speed runs.
4s??? You are a mad man... 4s is often too much for 1/10 scale and you put it in there😂 I think a more "mature" choice would a quicrun 16bl30 combo on 3s with a fitting pinion gear. I definitely want to upgrade the cvds and diffs to make it bulletproof, but a power upgrade might not be necessary at all *sad wrenching noises* I was really hyped for this video and I think this is currently one of the best small scale rc cars you can buy. Not cheap at all, but the quality you can achieve is rare at this scale. Thanks a lot man!
So just a heads up, Castle now has a warning on their website NOT to use 4S with this ESC in the groms. They advise to stay with 2S only. Warranty will not be honored because of all the mesh issues and wrong pinions being used. Thats their claim anyway.
Yeah that's primarily problems with the smaller motors. That's why I run the 1010. It has a bigger shaft and is not subject to those same breakages. That being said in my opinion in this hobby unless something fails right out of the box I probably wouldn't warranty claim it. Especially the kind of shenanigans I do are often beyond the intended use cases of the hardware so if it breaks generally it's on me. As far as running 4S honestly unless you are speed running there's really no need for it. 3S is more than enough and 2s works really well for general bashing.
Great video. I would love to see links in the description to the products you use. i am excited about the Mojave Grom and waiting for it to come back in stock. Would you buy the Mojave Grom or the Typhon Grom if you had to choose one?
I'd go Mojave all day long. I feel like the form factor of the typhon really limits its versatility. It's really low slung and the Mojave just feels better. If I had to pick between all three I'd probably go with the granite though just because I'm more into stunts and tricks but the Mojave is a fun little truck.

I didn't but I did fit them and they look okay. Kind of odd and you would still have to trim the body but not terrible. I have one more video coming in this series I will fit them on to the truck in that video so you can see it.
Insane build! Have you had any issues with the steering servos on these Groms? Our Granite Grom hardly steers in either direction now. And its stock other than the diffs which of course failed pretty early on.
Nope. I haven't had a single steering issue yet. That being said because of how many vehicles I have none of my vehicles get that much use so long-term reliability is hard for me to evaluate sometimes
@DoRC thanks for the feedback. We are going to have to throw a servo in it because the huge turning circle is just prohibitive at this point. My son does drive the grom quite a bit, but I would think there is very little stress on the steering servo in such a little car.
Yeah there are definitely ways to tidy it up though it really doesn't look too bad except for at the very front of the rear where the chassis is visible but that's just because I cut too much off.
Granite tires r squirely. Put the boots back on with the wider stance it should be awesome. But it looks great with the granite tires tho. Honestly now thinking of doing it. My granite is fully upgraded I could just swap it all over….. great video.
The 3S trucks aren't quite so bad because you can kind of get an idea of what the mesh is going to be and the teeth are bigger but yeah it's not ideal. That being said This car comes from the factory with set mesh on the motor mount so technically it's not designed to be adjusted like that.
I don't but basically you need the arms and axles from a granite as well as the tires and then the castle mamba micro x combo with the 1010 4400 KV motor and a hot racing mod 0.5 18 tooth 1/8 in pinion that you can get on eBay. You'll also want to get the Grom all metal differentials if you can find them and the metal CVD kit.
Hello friend I have a question. The 1010 combo with the micro x2 esc doesn't come with a fan it seems. I'm having heat issues with the esc, any recommendations? The mount on the esc seems to small for normal fans. Zip tie it on maybe? I find it odd this combo didn't come with a fan
@@DoRC I ran the setup for the first time for about 5 minutes. When I took the body off, the esc was definitely too hot, could barely touch it. I am running a larger pinion, 26 tooth, but I see many others doing the same with no problems, I just feel like I'm missing something. The motor was barely even warm, and that's with quarter throttle most off the time with a handful of full throttle blips thrown in there 😬
Question! How exactly did you get the granite arms to fit? I bought a set to fit the badlands on my Mojave and just simply doesn’t fit. Guessing I need the steering links to?
I'm sure the MJX is fine though pretty much all of those smaller MJX cars are the same car underneath just with different bodies which of course the groms are too. I don't have experience with that particular model but I've had several of their other ones and I have mixed feelings about them. They are pretty tough and represent decent value for money however they don't handle very well in general and are a pain to work on. Personally I would go Grom all day everyday even though you're going to end up spending more just for the ease of maintenance and repair as well as the availability and variety of upgrades.
I don't do links for two reasons. The first one is that I don't want to have to keep up with the logistics of constantly changing links and second but more importantly I don't want people to think I'm trying to sell them anything because I'm not. This channel is not even monetized.
So far they seem fine. I don't have a ton of time on this particular model but I've run four different groms with some pretty big tires and pretty big power and haven't had any issues
I have the granite grom, if I have this also, would change mojave parts to granite and vice versa as you did. G would be indoors and M outdoor bashing, if it handles little stones better than G.
I had one for a little while. For a small on road car it's good though it is small enough that the surface you bash on is pretty important. It's definitely more expensive but something like the 3S infraction is a lot more versatile because of its increased ground clearance. It is quite a bit bigger though
The battery tray size should be available on the horizon website and you can just look on Amazon for what will fit. The only problem is the stock connector is an IC2 so you'll have to get an IC2 to whatever you're going to use adapter. I think horizon cells and IC2 to ic3 adapter which should open up battery availability.
I think it depends on how you look at it. Small cars do tend to be harder to control just because they have less mass so they're able to change direction more readily but being four-wheel drive helps ameliorate that problem. Ultimately I'd say it's nice to have but not everyone will use it
once again a great video 👍👍 I wonder which is more worthwhile for a beginner and which is more fun. mojave grom for 169 € (in germany) or the senton boost for 160€ (in GER) ?!... Because I think if you put some weights behind the rear axle on the Senton, it will give it more grip on the rear axle. 100g might be a little more or less weights behind the rear axle (fishing lead may don it) AND I THINK IT WILL BE MORE FUN THAN WITH A AWD SENTON AND MAYBE MORE THAN A MOJAVE GROM . what do you think ? Maybe good material for a video, because the senton is available in Germany for 160€ or around 140$. And a beginner can stick with the brushed motor and run it on 3S, which gives you around 30% more power witch is enough I think before converting it to brushless. I'm really wondering where you can get more fun for your money. And maybe you can make a comparison video out of it Senton Boost with weights VS Slash or an arrma video in which the Senton Boost competes against the Mojave Grom in price and fun comparison?! 😁😏 ....greetings from Berlin✌...keep it up
I think the larger car will be more fun for most people out of the box though two wheel drive can be fairly challenging. Honestly I would probably save up just a little bit more and get a four-wheel drive 1/10 scale vehicle.
See now... If it drove like that out the box, Arrma would literally be the SMALL SCALE RC KING.!!! Can you imagine the love & respect they'd be getting.!? Nobody would be able to say anything about them... But instead, in many people's opinion, mine included, they've gone & done themselves a serious disservice by not releasing it like this.! All they've done is give their critics & detractors ammunition to sling at them.! It's also 100% justified criticism imho.! I don't doubt that they'll release a brushless version, but I honestly think they should've released the it first & then release the brushed one.! They would've had a much bigger impact that way, everyone would've been super stoked & the Internet would've been full of NOTHING but raving positive reviews rather than the mixed reviews & criticism they have now.! If they'd sold it for something like £175/$175 THEY'D LITERALLY HAVE WON RC.!!😉 😉 Then when they released the brushed "Grom Mega"? version people would've been more than happy with them because they'd be naturally expecting less anyway... I doubt there'd be anywhere near the same criticism as it has now.! .... .... .... .... Anyways, those are just my thoughts for what they're worth.. Stay safe out there & the very best wishes from Scotland 🏴 🙏 ❤️ 📻 🕹️ 🔋 🚗 🚖 🚕 🚔 🚚 🚙 🚘 🚓 🚒 🚑 🚐 🚎 🚤 🚁 🛩️ 👍 👍 👍
Yeah I'm not sure what they're justification was for releasing brushed versions first. I have to imagine they will come out with a brushless version. That being said horizon is very good at making money so they probably know what they're doing.
Really good information. To build A brushed Car In to Brushless.I'm Working on my 1/14 SRacing from JJRC.Looking to good to have A Brushed motor Its to slow.So Now i have ESC 2-3s And Hobby-wing Motor and Can't wait to drive it 🙏 Thanks for sharing this with Us 🙏😇 Keep it up Really good work fellow Rc lover😊
Excuse me good sir, I have a question, I'm following your build and was wondering what you meant when you said "just get the mount that's preset for your pinion and avoid the frustration". Is there a better mount to use that'd be easier to install? Any info would be much appreciated
Arrma sells a bunch of different mounts each one is designed to work specifically with one or two pinions and isn't adjustable. I'd recommend either using an 18 tooth pinion so you can just use the stock mount or getting a mount from them that matches the pinion you're going to be using. Trying to get the mesh right using an adjustable mount on this platform is maddening.
@@DoRC Great info thanks, one last question, I'm on arrmas website right now, I see their mounts, but how do I know which ones are meant for a certain pinion like you said? I hope I'm not bothering you just picking your brain 🧠
@@birdistheword1327 looks like you can get the whole motor mount set ARA320744. That should include everything you need and each mount is labeled with the pinion size it's compatible with.
Doesn't really matter. Pretty much anything greasy will work. These gears get so little use compared to what most gears in something like an industrial setting experience that pretty much any lubricant will work just fine. Honestly you could probably get away with just leaving them dry for most applications :-)
Hard to know for sure because I don't have personal experience with it. I have had a few people mention that they broke the hobby wing motor shaft but it'll probably depend on how you're bashing.
Now you tell me about the grub screw lol I stripped it too easily I didnt have that problem on the Typhon. Yeah its crazy and hard to drive totally forgot I had a gyro in there I could have turned on lol . My run today was cut short by the front the cvd ejecting the pin! So yeah metal ones on the way I hope they dont have the same issue
I'd say it depends on what you wanted to do. The Mojave is going to be the most stable out of the line but the granite has the most potential for stunt ability. The granite's also going to have a bit more ground clearance so if you're running in grass and whatnot That is a consideration. The Typhon is okay but it gives up a lot in terms of off-road ability in the name of speed and handling
It really depends on what you're looking for but personally I would go for the Mojave just because it's more versatile. It's got better ground clearance and I think it's just overall more fun
A crazy fast Mojave Grom, great work! Those little cars are so hard to control with all that power though. Check out @James McCoy, he is running a Typhon Grom on 4s, with the CC Micro X2 and 1010 motor. On his most recent run, he hit 107mph (yes, miles per hour)!
I thought about it but to be honest for the most part on road top speed doesn't really interest me and I like to base what I record off of what I would be doing anyway :-)
Doing a half version of the video. ordered the dang motor combo before i finished the video so i geuss we going too much power! no body widening and maybe just having an expensive 2s kit on the normal tires until they blow up. Then its time to cut the body and widen it!

Hey - do you have the ability to test AVC on any of the Grom models?
Not really but I don't really see any reason why it wouldn't work.
Yup, going to have to order some of the Badlands. This would pretty much match how my 6s Mojave is(kraton suspension and tires).
Yeah they look pretty cool!
When you say you're having heat issues with the ESC exactly what is happening?
@@DoRC I ran the setup for the first time for about 5 minutes. When I took the body off, the esc was definitely too hot, could barely touch it. I am running a larger pinion, 26 tooth, but I see many others doing the same with no problems, I just feel like I'm missing something. The motor was barely even warm, and that's with quarter throttle most off the time with a handful of full throttle blips thrown in there 😬
@@DoRC this was on 3s btw
Question! How exactly did you get the granite arms to fit? I bought a set to fit the badlands on my Mojave and just simply doesn’t fit. Guessing I need the steering links to?
Yes you'll need the steering links and the axle shafts as well. Pretty much anything that is different lengths on the two different vehicles
@@DoRC thank you sir! Kind of figured it was no different than any other Arrma, thought I’d get lucky! Thanks for the video’s as well. You the man!
Looks like fun ) How do you think this compares to mjx 14309(the "desert buggy" style one)?
I'm sure the MJX is fine though pretty much all of those smaller MJX cars are the same car underneath just with different bodies which of course the groms are too. I don't have experience with that particular model but I've had several of their other ones and I have mixed feelings about them. They are pretty tough and represent decent value for money however they don't handle very well in general and are a pain to work on. Personally I would go Grom all day everyday even though you're going to end up spending more just for the ease of maintenance and repair as well as the availability and variety of upgrades.
@@DoRC well, yes that's true. What about some other mjx? Maybe 14210 (truggy style)?
Great videos. It would be nice to provide links for products used
I don't do links for two reasons. The first one is that I don't want to have to keep up with the logistics of constantly changing links and second but more importantly I don't want people to think I'm trying to sell them anything because I'm not. This channel is not even monetized.
EXACTLY what i want to do to mine.
I would recommend it. It's definitely a fun little project!
Wonder what it would look like with the wider arms and stock tires. Think I would have to cut the body still?
Yeah pretty much anything you do that is in stock with is going to require trimming the body because of how close the tires are to it out of the box.
This is how is should come from the factory!
Maybe though I wouldn't discount the stock form as even with the brushed system it's still pretty fun
Would you recommend the powerhobby diff cups?
Unfortunately I haven't tried them so I can't make a recommendation either way
you're created a monster 😮
Yessir!
How does your pinion and spur gear do with that kind of speed?
So far they seem fine. I don't have a ton of time on this particular model but I've run four different groms with some pretty big tires and pretty big power and haven't had any issues
I have the granite grom, if I have this also, would change mojave parts to granite and vice versa as you did. G would be indoors and M outdoor bashing, if it handles little stones better than G.
I have some plans for something similar :-)
Beast bro.
Yep!
Looks so much better!
Yeah she's definitely a little beast now!
Looking at a small basher a bit like this. For an onroad competitor, do you have any thoughts on the MJX 14301 series
I had one for a little while. For a small on road car it's good though it is small enough that the surface you bash on is pretty important. It's definitely more expensive but something like the 3S infraction is a lot more versatile because of its increased ground clearance. It is quite a bit bigger though
@@DoRC Haha, this is all pocket money stuff, Infraction is a little too much. Thanks as always for your quick response and great videos!
What size batteries work with the Mojave grom? I cant find the oem grom battery. I have a Mojave Grom in the mail and i wanna get a few extra packs.
Do you need a gyro for this thing? I mean for a car this scale, is a gyro necessary?
I think it depends on how you look at it. Small cars do tend to be harder to control just because they have less mass so they're able to change direction more readily but being four-wheel drive helps ameliorate that problem. Ultimately I'd say it's nice to have but not everyone will use it
once again a great video 👍👍
I wonder which is more worthwhile for a beginner and which is more fun. mojave grom for 169 € (in germany) or the senton boost for 160€ (in GER) ?!...
And
a beginner can stick with the brushed motor and run it on 3S, which gives you around 30% more power witch is enough I think before converting it to brushless. I'm really wondering where you can get more fun for your money. And maybe you can make a comparison video out of it Senton Boost with weights VS Slash or an arrma video in which the Senton Boost competes against the Mojave Grom in price and fun comparison?! 😁😏
....greetings from Berlin✌...keep it up
I think the larger car will be more fun for most people out of the box though two wheel drive can be fairly challenging. Honestly I would probably save up just a little bit more and get a four-wheel drive 1/10 scale vehicle.
Still looks great 👍
Yeah I think it came out pretty well!
I am surprised them granite tires didn't blow out. that was fast.
Yeah I am too. They held up really well
Hey man, great videos! I actually ordered the exact same combo you did to upgrade my truck. How do you pair the remote to the new ESC/Receiver?
Depends on which transmitter you're using.
If they'd sold it for something like £175/$175 THEY'D LITERALLY HAVE WON RC.!!😉 😉
Then when they released the brushed "Grom Mega"? version people would've been more than happy with them because they'd be naturally expecting less anyway...
Like the location youre at for a trophy truck style rc, hope its not too far a drive
It's not but unfortunately it's a construction site so there's lots of times that I can't get to it and it's not going to be there forever.
I'm sure it will be a big improvement! Let me know how it goes.
@@DoRC thanks so much for your help. I subscribed and told a few buddies about your channel. Much love 😎✌️
@@birdistheword1327 thanks I appreciate it!
What type of grease do you use for open differencials?
Doesn't really matter. Pretty much anything greasy will work. These gears get so little use compared to what most gears in something like an industrial setting experience that pretty much any lubricant will work just fine. Honestly you could probably get away with just leaving them dry for most applications :-)
just wondering do you think i made a good choice i got the hobbywing quickrun 6500kv for the meantime before getting castle
Hard to know for sure because I don't have personal experience with it. I have had a few people mention that they broke the hobby wing motor shaft but it'll probably depend on how you're bashing.
@@DoRC thanks
Looks like a mini monster slash
Yep!
They don't. The metal ones are very strong
Do have a personal preference as a small backyard basher out of the grom series?
Judging from video material, I heavily lean towards the mojave.
Can’t wait for the losi nascar mini to come out and the speed with it on 4s
Yeah it should be pretty crazy!
Nice monster 🤟
Yeah I think it came out pretty sweet!
Which in your opinion is better the Arrma Mojave Grom or the Arrma Typhon Grom
It really depends on what you're looking for but personally I would go for the Mojave just because it's more versatile. It's got better ground clearance and I think it's just overall more fun
@@DoRC ok thank you it’s been hard for me to decide
@@DoRC I just subscribed to you, thanks for the help
Do the Mojave grom wheels and tires fit the typhon grom too?
Yeah I don't see any reason why they wouldn't.
@ thanks for the reply brother
You're welcome!
What metal diff is that?? From which vrand and model?.. Tia
It's the Arrma upgrade differential for these trucks. Unfortunately they're pretty much always out of stock.
I'm not surprised. I was at maybe half throttle on those speed runs in the video. It had a lot more to give.
Is that an app you’re using for the temp?
It's an app along with a USB-C thermal camera.
@@DoRC do you have a link for the app that you could share?
Maybe consider giving both on road and off road top speeds?
I thought about it but to be honest for the most part on road top speed doesn't really interest me and I like to base what I record off of what I would be doing anyway :-)
geez with paddle tires and a granite body that thing maybe safe to skip across water !
Yeah it probably would.
Doing a half version of the video. ordered the dang motor combo before i finished the video so i geuss we going too much power! no body widening and maybe just having an expensive 2s kit on the normal tires until they blow up. Then its time to cut the body and widen it!
Nice! Let me know how you like it :-)
