I learned to plant potatoes from my grandmother who was taught by her Scots-Irish grandfather, whose family left Ireland in the wake of the potato famine (which killed over a million people). Potatoes became a food staple for Ireland’s poor tenant farmers because you could get high yields out of a small area. So you could feed your family healthily out of a small plot. Unfortunately, people came to rely on potatoes so much it was completely devastating when the blight hit in the 1840s and the majority of the population was left with no food. Ireland’s population before the famine was 5 million. After, it was approximately 3. Approximately 1 million people left the country to escape the devastation and seek opportunities abroad. Consequently, there are more people of Irish descent outside of Ireland than actually live in the country today. One of those immigrant families was the Kennedys, who of course produced a President of the United States. So the simple potato had a tremendous impact on history.

Laura, you always pick on yourself for having dirt on your face after planting, but honestly it makes you all the more beautiful! It's a sign of your hard work and shows how much you love what you do 🙂
The aggression from finding a rouge red tulip 🤣 Laura and Aaron you’re a part of my daily routine and I really look forward to coming home from a day at office to find your joyful voice to inspire me to look forward to the weekend and binge garden! Thank you for your ongoing inspiration!
My father taught me to cut my potatoes and then put them inside a paper bad with bone meal and shake it all over the potatoes. Then let the potatoes sit for a couple of days and then plant according to preferred method. Works great~Thank you Laura~
Of all the spaces, I am most excited about the flower shed. What a beautiful workspace surrounded by fruit trees and looking out over the cut and veg garden. I can’t wait to see it filled with old cupboards of vases and pots! My daughter loves the purple potatoes best. We have done mashed but fries and roasted are the way I like them. I am definitely going to look for the Tiny Dancer. I would love to put in smaller lilacs in my garden.
The purple potatoes are so good as a potato chip, maybe air fry them. Loving how all the new updates is looking, so exciting to see the changes on the property coming together.
My parents have a whole bed of Natchez blackberries. They live in Alabama and the plants handle the heat and humidity superbly. They start getting gallons of blackberries mid-late June in their 7b garden. Plus, no thorns which is great!
Triple crown and black beauty are amazing blackberries! Huge and delicious. I live in high heat and desert…very similar to garden answer actually. They do better with trellising, but so good! My soils is a bit different though. She said triple crown. I have been growing that for a few years now! So good and sweet. Just don’t pick to early!
Oh Laura. I can’t tell you how excited it makes me to see your structures coming together. I can already envision all of the beauty that will be created this summer in the shed with the cut flowers. Could you and Mom make some cocktails this summer with all the berries!?!
Laura I love that you always show your technique, like how gentle you were with your raspberry sucker transplants, where as I just rip them out with reckless abandon much like you and the red tulip! 🤣 Love to see all the progress, thank you for sharing your enchanting space with the world!
I love using purple fingerling potatoes with carrots or butternut squash and Brussel sprouts, red bell pepper. I roast them with olive oil, rosemary, salt and pepper. Beautiful combination and yummy.
Purple potatoes are so fun. Mashed purple potatoes are delicious and a great way to get picky eaters to eat different things. Purple potatoes, purple carrots, purple cabbage, purple veggies are just fun and packed full of different phytonutrients than other varieties
Good Morning, I don't think you need to keep that box cleared of mulch, just find a nice rock that is not too heavy or a small statue to place on the top as a marker. It will add interest to the area and let you know right where the box is in case someone needs access. What about using a ground cover, like lamium, for the rest of the space?
Love when I see a 28 minute video. The longer the better! Lol I love to watch and enjoy my first coffee of the day. My husband knows I get to watch Garden Answer before he can get the iPad. I know how it is to start digging and realize the dirt only goes a few inches. Our house is from the 1920’s. When we first moved in, we went to plant a tree and a flower bed. Realized there is actually concrete that goes out about 4 feet from the slab.
Oh multicolour potato salad is THE BEST! We have a local farmer nearby who focuses on growing pink flesh, purple flesh and orange flesh new potatoes. I add german fingerlings to her mix and boil them whole (to maintain colour) then halve them once they cool. It's a jewel-toned show-stopper at dinner parties. I dress it with olive oil, mustard, parsley, dill and lemon with just a touch of yogurt - so it doesn't obscure the colours. So pretty, try it!!
Good morning, Laura ☕️. The flower shed has a Hoselink 🤣🤣 Aaron “heard” the green light from you 😂. The tulips 🌷 in the orchard are all filling in nicely. That is a ton of potatoes 🥔😳. I’ll have to keep my eye out for those lilacs! I too love the smell of them. Have a Blessed Day 😊🐈
What is funny is we have the Gold raspberries that you love in EVERY garden center I've been in this spring. Too bad I can't ship them to you from Maryland. 😆 Love the lilacs and the size! That is perfect.
Your area must be where the Gold raspberry grower is located. Crazy isn't it? Maybe the cost of fuel is keeping plants more localized this year from the growers. Happy gardening!
Natchez blackberry is part of a group named after native Americans. My home town, Natchez, MS is named for the Natchez as we have several mounds & artifacts from that period. Natchez is the oldest settlement on the MS River and features many antebellum homes but sadly their gardens are lacking IMO, as I have a 'Laura style' of gardening. It's still a beautiful little town. Aaron would love the architecture I believe.
@@julieclark9173 Please do! Spring us beautiful with azaleas but weather is unreliable until late April, May. Summers are hot. Fall is my favorite season because of the light. It's so nice to see you kept your grandfather's table!! :)❤💚 I believe it was your grandfather's table? The little blue/green table in the cut flower shed(00:09:12).
Seeing you over the year or so that I have been watching take plants and moving them gave me the courage to do that. I had a Pieris that was not doing well I moved it and replaced it with a yellow twig dogwood. Well that pieris is showing new growth!! You helped me save that plant and I am SO EXCITED! Thank you!
Love your videos!! My parents have grown blue potatoes before and when you boil them they loose the purple color… so no weird mashed potatoes or potato salad! I agree the best way to keep them purple is to roast or crisp them! Great color addition!
Purple potatoes are fun! The kids especially think they’re pretty neat. And odd as it is, making a potato salad with them is really beautiful, especially if you add in lots of fresh green herbs!
When planting potatoes in your own garden, one should always use "certified seed". Not only does it protect your own potatoe crop but it protects large farmers around you from disease that might be in potatoes. You should always know where you get your potatoes from that you are using for sets.
It is uplifting to know some of these challenges, like a box where you don't want it, but can't move it, or some plants just don't make it, despite your doing all you could/doing things well. Makes me feel better about the random things that challenge us in our landscapes and efforts. THANK YOU for this, always learn something here.
Great video, super informative! A tip I have for picking blackberries is to wait until the berry is dull instead of shiny, that really makes a big difference in the sweetness. I’m actually pulling my blackberry vines out because they’re so aggressive, I’m thinking of moving them to another part of our property but haven’t decided yet. I prefer raspberries 😊
Laura and the red tulip should either be a meme or a book title 🌷😂 Just wondering, how will you keep the birds away from the blackberries? I think I remember that the birds beat you to it last year.
We love purple potatoes and, in particular, purple sweet potatoes (a variety I cannot remember the name of) that tastes exactly like a cake! I'm trying to get the right variety, so every year, I order different purple sweet potato varieties hoping to 'discover' it again!
Here in Hawaii we eat purple sweet potatoes, either the Molokai or Okinawan varieties. You can mash them up, and add some coconut milk to add some creaminess. Yum!
Purple potatoes are fantastic! They taste like a Yukon gold but with more nutrients than a regular yellow or red fleshed potato. Super fun for kiddos too. Super excited to see your garden this year!!!
I've grown purple majesty! They're pretty good! I think the purple color includes more vitamins or something? Either way, I grew them for the color and they were super tasty roasted along with asparagus (all cut into 1 inch pieces- even the asparagus). Really nice bite sized pieces seasoned with garlic. They were sooo pretty and tasty along with our home raised steak from our Brangus type cattle. I look forward to seeing you make some purple mashed potatoes! Would be so fun for the kids 🤣 definitely green eggs and ham energy!
I just love hanging out with y’all and seeing your beautiful gardens come alive with blooms. This time of year is so pretty with everything waking up for the season. It is wonderful and generous of you and Aaron to gift some of your bounty to others.🥰 You cracked me up when you spotted that red tulip, again. You pointed it out a video or so ago. "Look at this; we have a rogue. How dare it." Off with it's head...😂🤣😂 That was such a bummer about the utility box being right where you wanted to plant the evergreen. 🤦♀️Oh well, like you said, finding it saves the entire rest of your flower bed.🤷♀️ New opportunity... It looked like the storm blew in pretty fast, by the end of this video. Have a Blessed and Beautiful day! Kimberley F in AZ 🌞🌵
You went to the garden centre and we didn't get to say hi to your Mum! I've just realised how I look forward to seeing her smiley face and hearing her cheery voice! I felt so disappointed when you grabbed those potatoes and next thing, you were home again.
Seeing as she asked, purple potatoes are AMAZING! In my experience they have a really nice buttery flavor and are supposed to have more antioxidants and things that are good for you. Definitely would recommend!
When I was growing up, my Dad and I grew 2/3 acre of potatoes, 1 acre of sweet corn, and 1/2 acre of everything else. Mom would buy a 50lb. bag of potatoes from the store and cut them up like you did. We took them from her and planted them, we did not leave them over night. I don't know if that is the right way but we always had a huge crop at the end of summer. I was one of 5 kids so we ate a lot of potatoes. We also grew 2 beef cows, 6-8 pigs, 24 roosters, and a few turkeys each year for meat. We had a few dozen egg layers as well. We were pretty self sufficient back then.

I appreciate the fact you let us see a few dead plants in your garden. In a “photo shop” world your honesty is refreshing!
Thanks for sharing that, I live in south Alabama and have been wondering what are some good verities to grow.
Also an Alabamian here. We have been successful with “thornless” blackberry variety purchased at Lowes.
They are both thornless!
My soil is more alkaline
Oh Laura. I can’t tell you how excited it makes me to see your structures coming together. I can already envision all of the beauty that will be created this summer in the shed with the cut flowers. Could you and Mom make some cocktails this summer with all the berries!?!
Excellent idea!
No doubt they will
Laura I love that you always show your technique, like how gentle you were with your raspberry sucker transplants, where as I just rip them out with reckless abandon much like you and the red tulip! 🤣 Love to see all the progress, thank you for sharing your enchanting space with the world!
That one red tulip .... messed up her entire 'color' scheme, that she has worked so hard on.
Off with it's head! ❌👤 ❌ Ha.
I love using purple fingerling potatoes with carrots or butternut squash and Brussel sprouts, red bell pepper. I roast them with olive oil, rosemary, salt and pepper. Beautiful combination and yummy.
Yum
Purple potatoes are so fun. Mashed purple potatoes are delicious and a great way to get picky eaters to eat different things. Purple potatoes, purple carrots, purple cabbage, purple veggies are just fun and packed full of different phytonutrients than other varieties
Good Morning, I don't think you need to keep that box cleared of mulch, just find a nice rock that is not too heavy or a small statue to place on the top as a marker. It will add interest to the area and let you know right where the box is in case someone needs access. What about using a ground cover, like lamium, for the rest of the space?
Or they have those hollow fake rocks…
What about putting a nice pot with an evergreen in it?
Love when I see a 28 minute video. The longer the better! Lol I love to watch and enjoy my first coffee of the day. My husband knows I get to watch Garden Answer before he can get the iPad. I know how it is to start digging and realize the dirt only goes a few inches. Our house is from the 1920’s. When we first moved in, we went to plant a tree and a flower bed. Realized there is actually concrete that goes out about 4 feet from the slab.
Your positivity in the morning is just what I needed!🌷
Love the lilacs and the size! That is perfect.
Your area must be where the Gold raspberry grower is located. Crazy isn't it? Maybe the cost of fuel is keeping plants more localized this year from the growers. Happy gardening!
Although I’m 66 years old I can still relate to a girl with dirt on her face! It just shows how much we love gardening! Love it, Laura! ❤️
I love purple potatoes! I typically roast them with some carrots.
I have great hopes to visit Natchez one day soon!
@@julieclark9173 Please do! Spring us beautiful with azaleas but weather is unreliable until late April, May. Summers are hot. Fall is my favorite season because of the light. There's the Great MS River Balloon Race in Oct and Ghost Tours (sells out quickly) in Nov where locals portray past residents during evening tours of our city cemetery, one of my favorite places. Let me know if you make it!
It’s so fun seeing all the bulbs and meadow flowers in the background. Hoping we get a full tour of all the thousands of bulbs we watched you plant so many months ago. 🥰
I love these mixed projects videos, they’re very entertaining.
Love the potato project in the cut flower shed.....the beginning of so much more to come👏The scent of a lilac is an old fashion true springtime garden treasure!❤️
Grasses in that tricky area would be perfect! Fun and informational video, thx!
I was so excited about the Hartley update yesterday, I almost completely forgot about your shed in the cutting garden! 🤣 It is looking so beautiful!! I LOVE the wood finish inside and those tables look beautiful in there!
You have such a talent for envisioning a space as you want it! I think I share you and your mom's tastes as well!
It's so nice to see you kept your grandfather's table!! :)❤💚 I believe it was your grandfather's table? The little blue/green table in the cut flower shed(00:09:12).
I love that table!!
Thank you!
Yay, *free* plants!!!! ☀️🌱🤣 The lilacs are so beautiful!! If I can find them locally, I am getting at least one (possibly more)!!! 💕
Love your videos!! My parents have grown blue potatoes before and when you boil them they loose the purple color… so no weird mashed potatoes or potato salad! I agree the best way to keep them purple is to roast or crisp them! Great color addition!
LOL !! I just KNEW she couldn't resist mentioning the rogue tulip! ..."How dare it?!" ... Laura cracks me up!!
Those lilacs are gorgeous! Planting one of my own if it ever warms up here in IL! Same zone as you guys.
Laura and the red tulip should either be a meme or a book title 🌷😂
Just wondering, how will you keep the birds away from the blackberries?
The purple potatoes are so sweet and creamy!! So good!!!
I love how last year's harvest becomes this year's 'seed'. Beautiful to see.♥️
I've grown purple majesty!
Thanks for taking us along on this journey and season of life. Hugs.
PS - I would love, love, love to be able to have a flower shed like yours. It would be to me what The Hartley is to you!!! Maybe someday. 👩🌾☀️💕😍🌷🐝🦋
Laura, I think I'm quite envious of just how great the inside of the garden shed smell is lol. Love the smell of wood.
Me too! The look and the smell ❤️
I get amazed how you can deal with such a ginourmous garden and the chores, my adhd could never, im over here stressing over some planters
I just planted potatoes for the first time ever! You inspired me last year to plant them this year. Thank you for your inspiration and learning experience. I’ve learned so much more in the last year watching your channel and Gardening with Creekside! I have worked in Greenhouse’s and planted flowers and veggie gardens but have not planted certain things and with what I’ve learned I’m encouraged to try planting things based on you videos! Thank you! 🥰❤️
Sitting here in hospital, had a total knee done yesterday! Watching all the wonderful plants you're putting in..
Recover soon!
Thanks for taking us on your daily journeys in your gardens. Your property is looking great! Always interesting, and I learn a few things here and there. My daughter and I were just talking about growing potatoes.
Hi Laura, You’re getting to the point where if you have an empty spot, there could be a reason. I call that progress! Love watching your videos ❤️
How did the poppy seed do that you sprinkled in the snow at your place and at your mom’s? Did it come up? I hope so!!
It must be so nice to pick berries from your yard 😀
I just planted a blackberry called “prime ark freedom” it’s apparently a primo cane bearing blackberry, Exciting. I love fancy, new varieties of things. Wish I had a lovely trellis like yours! Such beauty on your property!
Same here. Mine is coming soon. I just planted an Ouachita bare root as well.
My Triple Crown has been a prolific producer. They are delicious! You’ll love them. Thank you for sharing your gardening love and talent.
Yes, mine have too! I love them. But voracious might not be the Word you’re looking for, Lol.
@@cynthiafisher9907 I changed it to prolific…. Voracious describes how I eat them!
@@barbershopchick :)
We are technically in the same zone as you (we are in SE Michigan) but compared to your area and other places in the country in “our growing zone” we are at least 2 weeks behind you in terms of spring color. It is just now that the trees are budding up and the daffodils are finally blooming and I have yet to see a tulip bloom. I just can’t wait!!
So nice to see you in the flower shed. It’s looking great! Thank you for the great video on planting potatoes. Very helpful. Also, helpful on the berries. Can’t wait to see what happens there. I wish I could watch you all day in the garden🌷
@Garden Answer
👋🌞Good morning Laura!
The Flower Shed is looking so beautiful! It will be nice to see it completed and construction supplies gone.
Those berry beds are really coming to fruition. I know you will be excited when you can reap the rewards of them, this year.
That is going to be a LOT of taters. It is wonderful and generous of you and Aaron to gift some of your bounty to others.🥰
You cracked me up when you spotted that red tulip, again. You pointed it out a video or so ago.
"Look at this; we have a rogue. How dare it." Off with it's head...😂🤣😂
That was such a bummer about the utility box being right where you wanted to plant the evergreen.
I’m sure the kids will love the novelty of purple mashed potatoes!!
You went to the garden centre and we didn't get to say hi to your Mum! I've just realised how I look forward to seeing her smiley face and hearing her cheery voice! I felt so disappointed when you grabbed those potatoes and next thing, you were home again.
And all of us in Seattle watch you plant blackberries and yell “NOOOO!!!”
Morning Everyone 🌸💕🌸
Seeing as she asked, purple potatoes are AMAZING! In my experience they have a really nice buttery flavor and are supposed to have more antioxidants and things that are good for you. Definitely would recommend!
Good morning! 🌻🐝
Your videos are so informative and inspirational. God bless you, Aaron, Benjamin and Samantha Grace.
Good morning! The flower shed looks so nice and what a beautiful table.
So fun to see you work in the flower shed
Good morning all ☕️
My husband loves his blackberries.. I would love to get my hands on some of the golden raspberries though, I think we’d both like them. 😊🙏🏽❤️
Good morning, Laura, from Windermere, Florida zone 9b USA 🇺🇸
I think everyone is planting potatoes, but me 😳 I need to up my game on what I grow. Thanks for your instructions! Always simple, but you nail it!!!! And I love your new structure. Keeping it simple out there means you can make a mess and use the blower to clean it out.
I'm doing a raised bed. All the room that I have. I can't wait for that video. Thank you for all the help!!!❤
I really enjoyed seeing the orchard in this video. I'm curious when they are going to be planting the meadow and grass in the lanes.
Hi Lisa how are you doing?
You have really inspired me to get into the garden more, & just give things a go. Was trying to peek at how the bulbs were doing in the orchard.
That ring!! I would be so nervous to get my hands dirty with that on! Everything is gorgeous as per usual. Your daily videos get me more and more excited to start my planting season going.
Good morning all have a safe and blessed day
I hope you will enjoy the purple potatoes. I have cooked with them and really enjoyed the vibrant purple on my plate. My husband was shocked but he ate them. (And they are really pretty as mashed potatoes).
I hope I don’t stir any emotions, but the flower shed is so beautiful even more than Hartley for me.
