New Miter Saw | Model DWS779 - Unboxing & Setup
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 29 сен 2024
- Today we’re going to unbox and setup my new Dewalt DWS779, a 12in sliding compound miter saw! A miter saw is excellent for rip cutting lumber to very precise angles and lengths. It’s something that a table saw can do, but is usually less than $500 unlike a table saw.
The set up for this was really straight forward because it came as one monolithic structure, the only components were the small end extenders, a workpiece clamp and a dust bag. The latter two of which, I won’t be using much. If you plan to mount this to a table that will be even with a table top, don’t install the edge extenders because that is what your table is for.
One thing I did notice was on the dust collection, it feels like it’s making a lot of dust even with a vacuum attached. But when you run it without the vacuum, it makes a TON of dust. So, though not impeccable like the Bosch router table dust port, it works way better than nothing.
If you have any questions about the setup, feel free to leave them in the comments section down below.
Thanks as always and be safe,
Josh

You're good. it took me an hour and the watching of your video to find the unlocking pin so that I could lift mine.
😂 I love how I’m so not the only one that struggled with this. I think Dewalt needs to take that feedback 😂
Same here bought mine today and it wasn’t until your vid did I get that function going 🤓👍🏼👊
I feel your pain...
That’s why I’m here, lol.
Ha, ha, my dad is coming from two states away to help me with a remodel tomorrow. I was gonna feel so dumb if I couldn’t even get the saw unlocked.😅
I couldn’t work out how to lift it up out of the box!! Thanks so much, looks like others hand the same reason!
Glad you found it helpful!
came here to find the unlock pin location lol, cheers mate
Love it! 😂
Good tip on the base extensions, thanks!
Just bought one. Thank you for video.
Glad you found it useful!
Good teaching video.
Thanks Nahum! I’m glad you liked it!
The most useful part of this video is how to install the edge extenders. The directions that came with it are not good. It doesn’t say a thing about what that tiny nut is for on the extender bar. Another thing I’m not wild about is that the saws metal back board prevents you from taking advantage of the full horizontal sliding potential. It wastes up to two inches of how far it could slide.
Glad you found that part helpful! I agree the directions were atrocious. And I agree on the fence, it could have been set further back to increase capacity. Overall it’s a great saw though
type 22..........
5:20 Yep! That is precisely what sent me to RUclips hunting for how to unlock the darn thing so that it lifts. And this being my very first mitre saw, I’m watching everything you share very closely. RUclips saves the day! THANK YOU!!
I'm so glad you found it useful and thank you for the compliment! That's the goal of the channel.
Happy Woodworking!
Josh
Same here buddy and I was about to post the time stamp too!
Me too haha
same here lmao
Wow, I couldn't figure out how to raise the blade either. Thanks for the video it was a great help. Dewalt is definitely lacking in a good operations and setup guide.
The saw is great and the manual useless. Some of us still do read! But this is the only unbox video that covered the essential set up details. Including the release pin that I could not find until I found this video. You are not the only one!
Dude, you literally walked through this like I was trying (and failing). Your video was so much help! Can’t wait to watch the next one for this bad boy!
Thanks for the feedback Brian! I’m glad you found it useful! If you haven’t seen it yet, I do have one on adjusting it to ensure its cuts are square.
ruclips.net/video/R-ANeYNPsM4/видео.html
A miter saw is not a replacement for a table saw. I would get the tablesaw first, unless you specifically need the miter was features. Miter saws primary use is cutting precise angles on very long pieces of wood (8 ft or more). If you are using shorter wood (2-4 foot), a tablesaw will do everything a miter saw can for the most part, unless you need to cut compound angles.
Took me an hour to find the unlock pin
Don't chop the box up. If there is a defect, you may need to return it and if you destroy the box, they may not take it back. It only weighs about 60Lbs, so you should be able to lift it out of the box if you are even average strength.
I didn't want to search for 20 min for that pin, that's why I choose YT and your video came first:)
I’m glad my video pops up for this pin 😂
I came here for that unlock pin :)
Opened the directions and was a bit overwhelmed. Watched this video and was ready to cut within 20 min. Clear and concise. Great video brother
So glad you found it helpful!!
The pull lever to raise the blade was the reason I watched the video. I felt like a dummy
I thought I was too and then the mass number of comments on this video proved both of us not 😂
I took about 1hr looking for that unlock pin, so i just decided to default to your youtube video haha 😄
😂 glad I’m not the only one!
You guys are not the only one I just got the saw and read the whole manual and nothing! I’m happy I didn’t spend any more time haha. Got the saw for 399 but priced match to Home Depot and got it for 349! Great saw for the price compared to the competition. Also I can do without the laser and save the 250$ to the 780
Gerardo, nice! That’s a great deal! And I totally agree that the “laser” addition isn’t worth even close to that amount 😂
I literally just had to reference this video for the locking pin as well....
I came only to find out how to unlock the saw
Daniel Forero glad I’m not alone 😂
I came here to figure out how to unlock the saw arm to use for the first time. Thanks for pointing Out the pin! NOTE: if the pin is too hard to disengage, push down on the saw. Also note that you may have to remove the packing around the blade before you can push down on it to disengage the pin.
Great note on the release and packing material! Thanks for helping clarify 😊
Thanks for the info. I had to watch that part many times to see exactly how he did it and still couldn't figure it out. I came to the comments and here you are saving my day. Thanks a lot
Thank you for this! I couldn’t figure out why it was so tight. Thought it was glued in lol. I just pushed the blade down and came up!
Love the video Josh. I just purchase my first ever Miter Saw and (more embarrassingly) have yet to find the unlock key! Will have another crack at it tomorrow morning. This video was very helpful . Can't wait to watch more of your videos.
This video was awesome it helped me so much
So glad you found it helpful!
It seems like everyone can't find the pin lol; thanks for saving me an hour of search myself.
Glad to help 😂
Thanks for showing the location of the unlock pin. I had to find your video to locate it. The pictures were hard to follow, going from the instructions, then going back to page 1 to find the part on the diagram. Great, informative video!
Thanks! I’m so glad it was helpful!
after work setting this up I couldn't figure out how to unlock mine either I was so tired and frustrated lol your not the only one
Pretty similar for me concerning the unlock pin, unfortunately I stopped watching your video about the 5 minute mark so I didn't see how to unlock it until after I read the instructions. Even after reading the instructions I didn't think the pullout pin was positioned where they showed it on their sheet. Ya wouldn't think it should be that hard. Patience is a virtue, I should have watched your whole video before plowing through - good video...
Oh shoot! Glad you were able to get it figured out! I agree though, you wouldn't think it'd be that hard.
The Dewalt 780 is listed at $649 at Home Depot now
First, thanks for the video. I have the identical saw waiting to be unboxed…, but I did also purchase the folding Dewalt work table that is compatible, too. One question: On someone else’s video, they stated when using a standard power miter, if given the choice, it is better to cut the narrow edge (e.g.: If cutting a 2x4, stand it on its narrow 1 3/4” inch edge rather than laying it flat onthe 3 1/2” edge to cut). As this is a sliding miter saw, is it the opposite or does it no longer make a difference? Thank you again. I’m looking forward to seeing the next video.
Glad you found it helpful! And that’s a great question. There are a couple of considerations:
1) Stability of the workpiece
2) Tear-out on the backside
3) Capacity on the blade
For stability, if your fence is big enough, there is less to worry about. But ideally your workpiece never goes above the fence.
For tearout, you will almost always have a little on the back side and by doing the 3.5” side back, you have more area to tear out than if the short side was showing.
For blade capacity, the taller the workpiece, the closer to the blade nut you are. This is the most minor concern but still there.
Had I not found this video, I don’t think I could’ve figured out how to unlock the lock pin. Thank you so much- a newbie.
Hey, from a fellow newbie, I totally understand! Glad you found it helpful!
Don’t feel bad. I literally watched your video to find that same pin. Thanks!
Who else is here for the darn unlock pin 😅😅
Really helpful presentation. Especially of locating the lift button.. Can't wait to see your next Vedic. Thanks Jerry.
Thanks Jerry! Glad you found it helpful!
2:10 I screamed so loud when you did that
Hahahaha, what’s your preferred method for removing it from the box?
@@NorthwestCraftsman I leave the styrofoam on and tip it upside down with the top open. It comes right out.
Thank you, I also couldn't find the pin to lift up the blade.
I was hoping you would say how to mount the clamp. It seems like it's backwards? It's flat on one side. I can't figure it out. It only took me about 5 minutes and a few tears to figure out the locking mechanism though lol
Sorry I missed the clamping! I so rarely use it I didn’t even think about it. If I’m remembering correctly, there’s a little pin or set screw to keep it locked in at the base.
Glad you were able to find the pin faster than the rest of us 😂
Don’t be embarrassed. I came here solely to find the unlock pin. Thanks!
I think the shear volume of folks that came here for that should be a notice to DeWalt that they need a manual revision 😂
Took me to watch this video to find out how to unlock this saw.
Thank you so much! Yours was the only video explaining the safety pin.
Glad I could help!
you can buy the XTS light system for maybe $75.00 and install it yourself. That's what I did with mine when I bought it 2 years ago.
ruclips.net/video/ZMJNE0_qUQw/видео.html Check this link for the upgrade instructions.
I'll check it out! Thanks!
Super helpful video! Couldn't figure out the pin myself! 😂 Glad to know we aren't all alone!
Not even close to alone 😂
Yeah the manual for this saw is basically worthless
I had the same issues with the instructions.
You only took 20 minutes to find the unlock pin (re: 5:22)... it took me finding this video to find the unlock key! I agree, directions are not very explicit or detailed.
Hahahaha, sometimes better than lucky. Glad I was able to help!
UNLOCK PIN!!! Thank you came here for this and i'm not a pro but it's not my first time using a miter saw and its not really obvious in the manual!
Haha, I'm no pro either but even as an engineer that considers himself mechanically savvy, yea, I couldn't find it forever either. Glad I could help!
Like many others, I couldn't find the unlock pin. The manual was pointing nowhere, the stupidest manual ever. Can't they just put a small sticker or label near the unlock button because almost everyone is struggling in finding the unlock button? Got damn, DeWalt!!
A small sticker would have been an awesome idea!
I am watching this to find out where is that pin lol
Same here, thanks for pointing out the release
Looks like I'm no. 31 to comment about not finding the pin to unlock the up/down motion. lol. Fortunately, I only spent 2 minutes looking for it on the saw before finding it on your video! And thanks for explaining what the extender pieces were for. They're still in the bags, and I was assuming they were handles to make it easier for 2 people to carry it around on a jobsite. You're a lifesaver today! I gave you a sub for being so damn helpful!
Thanks Jason! I’m glad I could help and thank you tons for the positive feedback! Look forward to seeing you around!
I had to watch a video to figure out the lock pin that holds the saw down.
I had to watch three video to figure out the unlock pin.😅 Thanks…it’s the pushing down then pulling part that threw me off.😋
It amazing to me how many people it’s tripped up 😂 to me that’s a reflection not on the person but the design 😂 glad I could help!
Got as far as trying to raise it up and couldn't figure the pin out. Only had to watch 5 mins in... Thanks! Great vid
Glad I could help!
Omg, thank you for showing me how to unlock the hinge to raise the blade!!
Glad I could help!
Now I don't feel like a complete idiot when I read all the comments about not being able to find the release button to raise the saw blade. Thanks for admitting it wasn't obvious.
Oh it certainly wasn’t you 😂 they need to take a note from Festool and color every button and interaction point.
Hahahahah don’t be embarrassed I gave up and I had to come to your video to unlock the head of the saw. Haha
I love how many people had that same issue 😂
my blade guard doesn't seem to roll properly. When I lower the arm, the roller is closer to the inside of the saw than the outside, thus not rolling and finish the cut.
I actually have this as well and it depends on the size of your workpiece. I find that I’d will go, but usually all at once which makes me nervous. I usually use the thumb on my trigger hand to raise the guard 1/2” to overcome this while cutting.
You didn't answer my question
I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who struggled with locking system.
Not even close to the only one 😂
Congratulations on your new saw Josh. Thanks for another great video. You are setting the bar for clearly delivering the important bits that we all come looking for.
Thank you for your kind words! I’m glad you find my videos helpful 😊
Had to find your video for that damn unlock pin! Thanks!!!
😂 not a problem! I’m so glad to hear I wasn’t alone 😂
Your first purchase should have been a table saw. I made that mistake
Thinking back, I'm not sure I disagree with you. A table saw is incredibly versatile. My initial plan was to purchase a nicer Saw Stop to start with but then I realized how many good table saws there are not the market for
Love your opening intro video with the dust blowing away your logo brand! Very creative and original. Thanks for your unboxing it was very informative.
Thanks! I really appreciate it and glad you found it useful!
Do you think the edge extenders are needed if mounting the saw onto the lightweight folding dewalt stand?
I don’t think you’ll need them so long as the stand is strong enough to support your work pieces.
Mine isn't unlocking. What am I doing wrong?!? 😭😭😭
Hey Nikki! I’m sure there’s nothing wrong 😊 when you’re trying to pull out on the pin, are you pushing down on the head of the saw, like you’re at the very bottom of a cut?
Thanks so much, I saw different videos none of them show the pin to unlock it
Thanks Henry! Glad I could help! That pin was a devil to find
what is the type of your saw????; thanks!, you can see it in the motor label
It’s the DWS779 😊
took me 20min to find that unlock button too! kept pulling on the hex bolt!
It’s amazing how hard it was to find 😂
amazing. your 20 minutes was my hour.
Hey, you win some and lose some 😂 I’ve been in the other end of that as well 😂 glad I could help!
congratulations on a good choice, this saw is expensive but amazing.
Couldn’t agree more.
how to slide forward electric saw model DW779
There is a slide lock on the top of the saw. Look at the part of the saw that slides on the two linear rails. Should be silver. On the top of this silver housing should be a small, rubberized, black knob with nubs around the edge. Turn this 1/2-1 turn counter clockwise to loosen the slide lock and it should slide freely. Let me know if you can’t find it and I can email you a photo or two.
Did yours come with a blade wrench?
I initially thought it didn't but after checking online what they look like, I believe it did. I'm away from my shop at this point but could check for you when I get back if you'd like.
I think that knife needs some sharpening there bud
Haha, no kidding, I've needed to for a while just haven't been able to get around to it.
Just bought this saw today. Love it. It’s a Beauty.
Sure is! Glad you like it too!
Thank you for that lock pin lol.
Glad I could help 😂
How do you unlock the pin? Not sure if I need to pull it out because it's quite hard for me.
Great question! Assuming you have the right pin (Dewalt didn’t make it easy, see photo below), push down on the saw head first to release the tension (like you’re making a cut), then pull the pin, and let the spring raise the saw up.

@@NorthwestCraftsman Thanks for the fast response. Awesome, the trick is pushing down the head of the saw first and pull the pin as you said. I got it in a second. Thanks again.
YUP THE UNLOCK PIN WAS MY NIGHTMARE!! thank for showing how to snap off !
This unlock pin is killing me😫
I am new to serious tools, please tell me how what this hose attached to. Thank you so much
Hey There! No worries at all! Glad I helped with the unlock pin.
So for the dust port, Dewalt has a specific locking adapter they use to prevent the hose from falling off. The adapter fits the tool and then you can get whatever length hose you'd like. Below are links to the hose and adapter. You'll need to make sure the other end of your hose fits your shop vac.
Adapter: amzn.to/3J4aXxx
Hose: amzn.to/3kvLAuq
The two adapters on the end of the hose should unscrew from the hose.
Happy Woodworking!

Thank you, so I need to buy shop vac
Actually not necessarily! My apologies for assuming you had one. You can run this without it, it’ll just be dustier. It’s designed pretty well to shoot the sawdust through that port but there is no requirement for a shop vac on the back side 😊
I spent 2 hours... if only I had this video 2 hours ago!!! Thanks much!
Glad you found it useful! Sorry you didn’t find it sooner! 😂
@@NorthwestCraftsman lol. It took you 20 minutes to find the unlock button. It took me 90 minutes plus the time I found it in your video. You saved New Years Eve!!! Happy New Year!
Ha! That unlock button was devilishly hard to find! Glad I couple help! Happy new years!
Thank you. I just unpacked this same saw and couldn’t find the pin to unlock it. Now it’s time to get to work.
Very helpful, thanks!
Glad I could help!
Thanks man! Great support
Glad I could help!
The instructions are terrible.
Couldn’t agree more, Dewalt did a pretty poor job with them.
Thank you for the video!
Of course! Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for this video!
Absolutely! Glad you enjoyed it!
5:18 took me a while as well 😂
Come one, come all!
Don’t be shy!
It’s not you;
it’s poor design! 😂
Glad you were able to find it 😂
Same. Had to watch your video to find out where that lock pin was.
Great video man!
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
Happy Woodworking!

Just an FYI. This is a the 3rd generation type 22 779 he is showing it has a couple less features than the older 779 (no slide lock lever on the side and no preset bevel stops at back). Only the 780 now has those features. Still a great saw👍
Interesting! I didn’t know that, thanks for the additional info!
Thank you very much for letting me know about the release pin that raises the saw I really appreciate it boss nice video👍🏼
Glad I could help!
I bought this saw about a month ago and haven't gotten around to using it yet....but I'm a bit shocked that there weren't instructions on where the unlocking pin was located? Or, are you guys just not reading the manual? Ha! Nice video.... I'll be looking forward to cutting something in the next day or two....now that I know where to unlock the thing!
I’m sure it was somewhere in there but it was hidden well enough that I totally missed it 😂
Thank you SO MUCH! I opened my DeWALT package and was overwhelmed with the instruction manual, typed my exact miter saw and wanted unboxing and setting up instructions and this was PERFECT! Exact saw and all, thanks for your content!
So glad you found it helpful Emily! 😄 enjoy you’re new saw and happy woodworking! 😄

It took me forever to find that unlock pin. That's how I came to watch your video. But the unlock pin didn't wanna move I had to use a hammer. Anyway thanks a lot. I bought it today at Lowe's.
I’m glad the video was able to help! Your pin may have been tight because the spring loaded head puts a lot of pressure on it. See if pushing the saw head down half an inch makes it easier to pull the pin.
Good saw. I got the 779 for 399 on sale. For the money they should have included a really good Lazer not just a shadow line in my opinion. Nonetheless I love the saw. Good video sir
Thanks for the compliment! I was thinking the same thing about the 779. It makes me wonder if there’s a patent on the laser alignment system which forced Dewalt to find another means of marking. Who knows but I agree, I love the saw.
Good job. The instructions did not show well how to install the edge extenders. None of the other unboxing videos showed this. I appreciate you showing everything.
RobToz2011 thanks! I found the directions to be wholly unhelpful 😂 glad you found the video useful!
Jeez, wish I'd watched this video first instead of some others which were just so-so. I liked this video!
Thanks Whitney! I’m glad you found it helpful!
Hey Josh, well done on the video! Just picked up one of these bad boys and am looking forward to putting it to good use! It was truly a delight coming across a video starring someone I actually know! Keep up the great work!
Hey Greg! Small world! Glad to see you around and I think you’ll love this thing! It’s been awesome in my shop. Let me know if you have any questions on it!

Hello - have you created the video showing how to make adjustments to the bevel and ensure correct square for cuts?
I have not! But I will add that to my docket!
Great video. Good pace. (Handle on top is best way to lift saw out of box without cutting box.)
Thanks! You're totally right too, I figured that out after the setup haha fun to learn those things after the fact.
Thank you this was very helpful, good supplement to the manual.
Of course! Glad you found it helpful 😄
