I used to work there. They tell us to start burgers when customers come in (one for a woman, two for a man), before they order. @@Sleezaxexactly fr. People complaining about price don't realize five guys always been pricier. And I'd rather pay for quality like them over any other fast food joint
One reason for the expensive price of their burgers is simple: You are paying for the option to have as many toppings as you want on the burger/hot dog. It's included in the price. (Toppings include according to their menu: Mayo, Lettuce, Pickles, Tomatoes, Grilled Onions, Grilled Mushrooms, Ketchup, Mustard, Relish, Onions, Jalapeno Peppers, Green Peppers, Bar-B-Que Sauce, Hot Sauce, A1 Sauce)
I thought I'd give Five Guys a try so I drove there this afternoon. Not knowing if there is a procedure to follow I walked up to the counter where it says "Order Here". I then noticed that there was only one person working. He was feverishly manning the grill and applying the condiments to the freshly cooked burgers. No other workers were around. I waited for around 10 minutes, then another man walked in carrying 2 buckets of frozen fries. I noticed he had plastic gloves on, but he didn't change them when he decided to help the grill man. He was handling the food while wearing the same gloves he had on when he entered the room. I don't know what he was doing outside of the grill area (for at least 10 minutes), but I doubt the gloves were sanitary. I walked out. I doubt I will ever return.

I was just having an email discussion with my mom yesterday as she lives in Los Angeles and I'm in Vegas, and we were talking about how fast food in general is way over priced. And while I brought up Five guys as being rather expensive, it was also on the very short list of me NEVER having an issue with their food. Carl's Jr, Chick Fil A, Arbys, all these place charge nearly as much as Five Guys(more in some cases) and the food sucks 9 out of 10 times(cold fries, stale buns, dry patties, etc). This wasn't so much an issue when 3 or 4 people could eat for 20-30 dollars, but now 2 people are easily over 30, maybe even 40 for "fast food", WTF!? Hellscape are we living in? Is Five Guys expensive, YES, no question, but the food it always fresh, you get tons of fries and everything taste great(IMO). Same for In N Out, they aren't as expensive(2 people can still eat for near $20), but the food is always fresh and love it or hate it, good value for the price. These other places are pricing themselves out of existence and if they cared just a little about food quality, people might not mind the higher prices.
Really!! In AZ and I looked up prices. A Double Carl, which is pretty big Double Cheeseburger ay Carl's Jr. is $7.99. A Cheeseburger at Five Guys $11.39. Your right. Same exact price not.
I was just in San Diego and I had a little sticker shock that’s for sure. But Vegas is also expensive. I haven’t eaten at Carl’s Jr or Arby’s in years, even Jack in the Box is turning me off. They are all beginning to taste the same. I hate Chick-fil-A’s fries, and although I go for the sweet tea, it’s also bland. I haven’t been to 5 Guys in a while, mostly because it doesn’t have a drive thru and very limited parking (although it does share the lot with Yogurtland), which is a bonus). When I went to KS, it seemed cheaper but where I went didn’t have a lot of choices for fast food. Maybe we should eat at home.

People don't pay attention. By giving the history you gave a good reason why it's so expensive. This family is practical and no nonsense. They recognized their boys weren't "scholarly" and knew the money would be better spent starting a business. This was an ability to be honest with themselves and not wasteful. A message by the way many could use today. Whiny collage grads complaining that they can't find a job with that post grad degree in underwater basket weaving and wanting me to pick up the tab for it. These people are uncompromising, honest and insist on high quality. I enjoyed your video very much. Thank you. I also love Five Guys. I don't eat there often, it's a treat. Recently I was in Belfast, Northern Ireland and went to one. It was as good as here in New York City. As I said, uncompromising, honest and high quality.
Five Guys feels like it was inspired by and want to be In N Out but totally missed the point of In N Out's prices being such a significant selling point alongside the flavor and freshness. Five Guys burgers are fine but also don't really taste good enough to justify the significantly higher prices.
This same channel covered In and Out's History. I suggest a watch it's a good vid. But apparently...their prices were so cheap because they had a nasty little habit of serving kangaroo and horse meat with a side of e coli....so...you know. To each their own I suppose XD

Due to health concerns I have to research every place I eat. When reading about Five Guys the article said, "If you have a peanut allergy don't even walk through the door."
Outside the DMV Five Guys food quality is lacking. When I lived in the DC area I would visit Five Guys, but since moving to a different area of the country I can't justify the high prices for what is at best mediocre quality.

No. The question is why so many people are stupid enough to pay prices for ingredients you could make at home for a fraction of the cost. And honestly, Five Guys isn't all that good - the grease from their food soaks through everything.
Last time I went to 5 Guys it cost $20 for a single patty cheeseburger and small fry, no drink. That was a couple years ago, I’ve never gone back. Can get a better, double patty cheeseburger at Culver’s for under $7.
The burgers aren't bad but I honestly don't care about their dedication to fresh food at a price point above everyone else. I can go to a local bbq place and get a half pound burger with pulled pork and turkey on it for less than I can get a fast food burger? Sometimes places need to start failing to learn that what works at a single location doesn't work as a national brand. Also, their burgers get 'soggy' extremely fast causing it to taste worse than a basic fast food burger if you don't eat it fast enough. Living in a place without access to In N Out I was wanting them to succeed, but instead am left wishing for a further expansion of In N Out...
Five guys is good but they are overpriced. They sell customers on the idea the food was never frozen, which is true, and therefore superior and worth paying the high price. Lies. They could reduce the average burger by $2-3 and still be making bank
The difference is Five Guys' "competitors" literally have carcinogens in their food. I rather pay $10, similar to Chipotle, for food that isn't stuffed with fish guts.

Cost our family of 4 $80. We got 4 burgers, 2 drinks, and 2 fries to share. In the beginning, it wasn't as much, but now it hit our wallet. This was about 2 years ago. Food is good but we will just eat at home.
i have no issue paying a higher price for exceptional burgers....but these arent any better tasting than other places.
chipotle and other places give assistance for education and some pay the staff a decent wage and still have less expensive prices,

Their burgers aren't twice as good as McDonald's, but they cost about twice the price!

I wouldn't call Five Guys fast food, it is instead fast casual similar to Panera Bread. They are targeting customers willing to pay more for quality. That is why they are successful, they know their target audience well.
Perceived quality. That's the most greasy burger I've ever had. Greasy is not quality.
@@dannydaw59 I concur. There usually is much better quality at local joints, at least where I'm from
I totally respect this approach! Do it right the first time! Give the people quality! Yes, you will have to pay for it!
5 Guys finally came in my country. Enthusiastically, I went to try. One look at the menu, I'm out. A single burger will get me FIVE lunches with the same price.

fr here in europe i could eat a menu at mcdonalds with an app coupon 4-5 times for the price of one five guys menu
“Five guys rather raise price than sacrifice quality” I wish my products and services had this mindset. Imagine paying the same for a less quality. Happens all the time with products
Yeah but I call bullshit, I can go to a local spot with farm fresh beef and get a burger and fries for 10 dollars or less.
The quality of almost everything is utter garbage. Where does that show up in the inflation stats?
Jeffrey Dahmer's buddy says- "HEY! I'm pretty hungry, want to grab some lunch?" Dahmer replies- "Nah, I'm STUFFED! I just ate FIVE GUYS!"
Double cheeseburger, regular fries and a soft drink= $21.00 in Chicago suburbs!
I used to go once a month as a treat now I haven’t even been there this year!
So let me tell you about Five Guys......fresh never frozen beef, quality ingredients, daily made fresh fries, and I'm a tow truck driver..... the consistency is crazy no matter the state tastes the same, well organized that's how they do it
I've been skipping them because of the price. Sure, other stores are raising prices because of inflation, but they've been rising it more in my area.
I have a new appreciation for 5 guys after hearing the owner basically told the pentagon to put it where the sun don't shine. =)

This is why the restaurant industry as a whole will never pay well, everyone cries about living wages, then complaines when they have to pay for it.

That must’ve been when they first opened over a decade ago
Watch the video again. This time pay attention
A hamburger is still less than $2 at BK and Wendy's near me
the statement was disingenuous as hell tbh. they're literally comparing the dollar menu to an actual, full-sized burger. It's only expensive when compared to fast food and not other actual burger spots.

I'd rather pay more, over getting less and worse.
Right at least 5 guys was always expensive. Not this BS with all the "cheap" places raising prices to damn near 5 guys levels without anywhere near the freshness

I doubt I will ever return.

premium quality, higher price.
Why are their burgers not seasoned 😭
So much this. Their burgers are so astonishingly bland. Loved the fries but the burgers?... nope
Grilled beef doesn't need seasoning 😋
It does always seem like the places with the least ingredients charge more.
These days that isn't too surprising now and also good video here.

People don't pay attention. By giving the history you gave a good reason why it's so expensive. This family is practical and no nonsense.

No. The question is why so many people are stupid enough to pay prices for ingredients you could make at home for a fraction of the cost. And honestly, Five Guys isn't all that good - the grease from their food soaks through everything.
I would pay WAY less for WAY less fries.
Last time I went to 5 Guys it cost $20 for a single patty cheeseburger and small fry, no drink. That was a couple years ago, I’ve never gone back. Can get a better, double patty cheeseburger at Culver’s for under $7.
Little fries jumped up from $3.09 to $4.99. Regular from $4.19 to $5.99 and large from 5.79 to $7.99.
Isn't Wendy's also fresh never frozen.
Because people don't have the self control to simply go elsewhere the same with Chipotle.
I never liked their patties, often overcooked or even burnt and feels dry.
Also No flavor.
8:40 "WHY IS IT SO EXPENSIVE?"
The difference is Five Guys' "competitors" literally have carcinogens in their food. I rather pay $10, similar to Chipotle, for food that isn't stuffed with fish guts.
I never understood why people complained about Five Guys prices. You're getting a restaurant-quality burger for the price of a burger in a restaurant.
