Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad The Hollow Men by T.S. Eliot & Apocalypse Now by Francis Ford Coppola A wonderful trilogy of completion from three different people. Thank you all.
I always try to make an effort, to return to this every Armistice Day. To my ancestors that are in Europe. I send my love from America, no more brother wars. For all humans on this earth.
just seeing these images and video, if I could back and time and I would tell them stay home, the sheep the herd will most conveniently forget the reasons and the horrors of their sacrifices. November the 11th 2020, was the last remembrance day I would ever attend, here in Canada we so conveniently forgot. veterans that fought in Afghanistan would rather be back in Afghanistan rather than being around the general population. at least they would be with their brothers and would not have to cover their faces. i am so ashamed of what my country has become. so ashamed. my great grand father fought at the battle of the Somme, he is rolling in his grave. i say this with a heavy heart they fought and died for nothing. God take me now please. God take me now please.
This poem is about men who believed themselves to be a part of something greater and "following the rules" meeting disillusionment in the most tragic way. - my reading of it
Perhaps about what you said and the horrors that come afterwards with a new paradigm and the passing of the guard so to speak ("this is the way the world....")
The way I see it is that it’s like ken who have died in battle and have been forgotten when I was younger I use to always tell him about different battles and wars I learned about and he would tell me how you shouldn’t glorify war as he was in the army and I never listened to him but this one thing made me understand
According to what I read this poem is about the cultural decay of Europe. Hollow men, stuffed with straw, like people of today stuffed with false ideas.
I agree. I think it tries to explain the horrors of ww1, which were done by men who technically were good people. The title refers to the fact that the new turn-of-the-century circumstances of society have left a vacuum of values in it's people. This vacuum was then filled with wrong ideas and ideologies.
This narration soothes me in my lowest of ebbs contrary to the essence of the poem, haha...satisfying to know someone's brave enough to speak the truth.
Hi Higura , why does this poem make you feel its relevant again, no sarcasm or point scoring, I find this a powerful piece and would like to know why you find it important
@@shanequigley7552 The Hollow Men, by TS Eliot was written during the period directly after World War I, and the immense loss of life across Europe led to a lot of people feeling jaded, hopeless and isolated. He refers to the 'hollow men' as being made of straw, or describing them in varieties of way that imply there is something wrong. Sunlight on a broken column, wind through a tree, empty men. This is a timeless message about the desensitized and demoralizing of populations, leading to helplessness and suicide; the latter being an incredible common thing in current society. People killing them at alarming rates. Nothing will change, no one will improve the condition. "This is the way the world ends, not with a bang, but a whimper." Not wanting to particularly dictate politics, but why is it that BLM is pushed to the forefront of media when the suicide rates among young white men is so high? With technology, isolation became a problem that no one really wants to address.
@@dailybalder5712 I'll compromise with you and say that it's a combination of the two. Demoralized, directionless men are less willing and able to create or defend
"Please take thy only hand that awaits you on the beach of Acheron, this hand will never judge you , do not fear, Charon is here, this hand will always be here for you and has been and will be in your countless forms to come."
What makes me sad is how right this poem is. So right that even our very language itself has become a tool for those that desire power. Where once we had a language of poetry, it has been a twisted complexion of what it once was. Now a language of propaganda
Hm, I don't think the poem is about war... Throughout the poem, it uses metaphors. I.E. "Here the stone images Are raised, here they receive The supplication of a dead man's hand" Stone images would be religious idols. Supplication of a dead man's hand would be as if someone was reaching out to something in their final moment, perhaps these idols. Symbolism for people hoping and beckoning for their god/gods and/or goddesses. The whole poem I feel talks about the death of faith, in such a arid climate (cactus land = desert).
On soldier's graves in Flanders, there are images on all the headstones of crosses, Star of David, etc. that denote the faith of the deceased. The religious metaphor is in fact a direct reference to the mass graves of WW1 soldiers.
poems never really used to interest me when i was high school thanks to dyslexia and there bad representation in highschool and education. This is different however.
This world is short of thinkers and philosophers. After trump I'm sure the numbers will be less. We have devolved as a species. We don't deserve to be on top of the food chain. We've squandered our gift.
We are floating around space and time on a glowing blue ball of light and life. Yet, we complain and continue to do what we do. We need to realize from all our observations that our planet is unique and cannot be replaced. A mythical tortoise in a sea of darkness.
