    I'm glad you made this video. currently I'm in the process of writing up my resume after a few years of not needing to update it. At this point I don't NEED a job but having a job I WANT is critical. Making a resume tailored to what I want to do instead of trying to get a job that just pays the bills is most important and seeing this really helped in crafting my resume; Not just in photography but in life.

    99% of the companies out there will throw out any resume that has a picture on it. By accepting a resume with a picture on it, the company opens themselves up to lawsuits based on image prejudice I owned a recruiting firm before my photography company and my clients (many in creative industries) would not accept resumes with a picture on it due to potential legal problems. Being creative is fine, and actually appreciated but you have to have verifiable metrics... If I may steal you word for a second, this resume is "shit" and should be tossed.

      @freerider this is not how the world works - especially the united states. We have anti-discrimination laws set in place. If someone found out they turned down an applicant for an interview based on their resume because they are black, then they will be sued. For smaller companies, they cannot afford a lawsuit.

    I enjoyed this video and have shared it with some 18 year olds that I know who are developing resumes as it raises the issues that are important in resumes and who you are targeting to get a job. The picture thing is cultural and does vary from country to country and employer to employer. A video resume is becoming more and more important and some companies I haver recently applied for jobs with, will ask for one to be submitted as part of the selection process. Linkedin - is an important resource and will quite often offer a free full membership for a month or whatever. Being able to show that you fit into the culture of a company is more important than ever, companies are leaner and meaner than ever and having multiple skills applicable to that company is more important than ever. and Yes if you are creative show your creativity in your resume. Lastly most resumes will be run through some sort of software now and used to fill out the job application form, so making your resume software friendly, is important it saves time in filling out forms.

    Hey Jared!
    Awesome to finally see the video! I appreciate the critique and criticism, I very much am in the same camp as in the resume for a photographer is a weird gray area where companies want to see them but what they really care about is your portfolio. Recently I applied for and got my foot in the door at a creative company in Philadelphia and one thing they said was that my resume got their attention which then lead to me going in person to show my portfolio, and THAT is what got me the job!
    In the end I loved that you saw my resume and thought it could make a cool video (which I think it did!) And I did take a lot of what you said and made changes, so I do appreciate this!
    (Oh also it's "DUR-ANN-TAY") but it's ok cause no one gets it right 😅

    Artist Resume/CV is a total reality for grant applications and are instrumental for photographers receiving funding. Magnum photographers usually work two days of their week applying for things and the Artist CV in the vein of the tradition CV is what is used.

    I wouldn’t place a photo of myself on a resume, but I might place a photograph that may be appealing to the place I’m applying to, and related to the position. They will see what i look like at the interview.I haven’t put a resume together in a while. The last one I did was a folded brochure. Yes there was traditional stuff in it, but it kept it short and was completely different than a piece of white paper with colors and borders. The place that hired me did that because it was different and stood out. No, it wasn’t in the photography field but still a job that paid bills.

    That resume would be thrown out immediately... It is plain awful.
    1. Never ever put your picture on your resume
    2. Skill "bars" say nothing about your skills. You have 100% in communication? Relative to what? It means nothing, get rid of it.

    • @CodHumors
      @CodHumors 6 лет назад +1

    • @ericarobbin
      @ericarobbin 6 лет назад

      Agree, totally. Never seen a resume like this before. The bar graph is definitely not showcasing his best assets, in fact it kind of hurts to look at because it brings up more questions, mostly with a negative aspect than positive. Always best to leave off a photo and the "younger" bit, especially from an employer perspective and nondiscriminatory standpoint, it can set for a strange situation for the applicant based on hiring practices. And being younger is not a skill and sets a bad tone for what he means by mentioning that.
      The beginning paragraph is super weak and very subjective, shows passivity in "he hopes to show" (would be better served on a cover page and reworded into something more concrete) and "full editorial spread" would be better if quantified into full page spread or double/two page. Interests are subjective and if highlighting being a photographer as a job, doesn't really belong in the hobby/interest section as well- best to save that section for more relational/personality/hobby type stuff wanting prospects to know about you and would be better to quantify years in the business of photography. Also better to highlight additional language skills instead of travel. If really wanting to put travel can be highlighted by putting company/assignment, country, and length of time to enhance willingness/flexibility to travel for assignments. And change connect to social media or something, "connect" is not professional. Kudos for being brave in showing us though!

    I couldn't find your link to your podcast again, so I'm commenting here. It was the first podcast I've listened to as I'm a bit old school I guess. I liked a lot of what you had to say. I am relearning photography since my youthful classes were in 35mm using Canon/Pentax. Naturally, that is what I purchased digitally. Come to find, neither are cool anymore. I don't really care. I'm not really any good, and having a Sony, Fuji, or Nikon is not going to change that. So I hope to get better using the stuff in which I've already invested. Love your work. I do have one question you hit upon in regards to ISO. Are you able to recommend a "safe zone" for a newer aps-c body (I have Canon 77D). I've read that 1600 is it, but I'd like to be able to comfortably stretch that and I really value your input. Thank-you so much for sharing your knowledge and doing what you do everyday. You have my vote on spending time on subjects you're passionate about vs gear I may never be able or probably shouldn't ever buy.

    Lots of great points but as a former business owner (I retired at 50 and now I'm a man of leisure) I have to mention I have/had zero time for any form of unsolicited advertising so anything that looks remotely like advertising goes straight into the bin. I love your channel and value your opinions but I'm afraid your college resume would have held my attention for about 0.3 of a second. However I always read and replied to resumes even if I wasn't hiring as I remember all to well what it was like when I was trying to get started and how valuable any response was.

    They will roundfile anything they can’t understand or read.
    No headshots / pictures, unless you’re a model and they are asking for headshots. You want your first impression of you to be in an interview.
    I don’t understand the chart what it is based on? Chart may seem like a good idea here but I would just address those qualities in bullets or paragraph. My chart would be 100 % on all points so you’re a failure because you don’t have 100%.
    I like the skills / tools based chart of the resume. You need a key though, at least let me know what skills you have and how much experience you have with these tools. Are you an Expert with at least 10,000 hours with these tools? Novice, proficient or competent? So, if you give me a chart and say novice at left end expert at other end I would get it.
    Thumbs up on some colors in resumes keep it simple without going overboard. Creative resumes are a great way to stand out but make sure your reader gets it right away they shouldn’t have to figure it out. They may have to go through a stack of resumes and will not spend anytime figuring out your puzzle of a resume.

    All those numbers are crap at the top, they are made up and backed up by what? Even is you are are going to a "creative" job you still need to provide the basics and a "basic" resume is not that bad. Especially since someone like me has to go through dozens of resumes. Facts are what matter when you are trying to get a job, the rest is garbage. So disagree with you on this one, but that is OK. :-)
