Good stuff Bud!! My Parents got a Toaster as a Wedding Gift in 1953 and used it everyday till they died. So when I had to clean the house out to sell, I threw it in the Gabbige!! I told the Ol' Lady, I hate to do this because there are probably some Goofs out there that collect these things!! Now finally after 30 years I found one!!☻
Years ago they had appliance repair centers. Now everything is designed to break and replace- Poor kids today think 4 years is a long time for something to last! 🫣😂👍
Troy- True story- When my Dad was a boy he was asked what he wanted for his birthday and he asked for a pound of butter… He received it and ate half a loaf of bread with his gift. 😂👍
In 1973 we had a home built that had a Nutone door chimes with the 4 chime tubes. My friends use to come over just to hear the door chime. We also had the Nutone intercom system that played music and could communicate between rooms. Ding Dong!
Every time I hear a doorbell chime makes me think of The Beverly Hillbilly's. They never could find the bell but someone always knocked after the chime went off!!! Haha 😂
If you like toast that is properly medium to dark, you have to go with an old toaster. I have a mid 1960's Sunbeam Radiant toaster that I bought about 5-6 years ago - what a delight! Tons of wattage, toasts bread, English muffins, Pop-tarts, etc. and you won't be 'double toasting' to get anything dark! As you said, old appliances were built to last a lifetime. Mine was bought from an estate of someone who died and probably had it most of her life or likely received it as a wedding gift. I predict I'll have it until I die.
We just hung my dads Fleet Arrow sled up on the shed. He was born in November 1930 in snow country, it was used so much by him his kids grandkids and great grandkids that it is worn completely out. Those giant bolt cutters look like the keys to the city.
I had a wired chime when I bought my house. I replaced the front door and went with a wireless buzzer. It’s terrible. Mistake on my part. But I was lazy and didn’t feel like trying to fish wire.
Hi Scout, thanks for taking me along to the flea market, you know how much I enjoy them. I like that number 97 bicycle wrench and I love the way American tools tend to practically have their name and address on them. We don’t do that in Australia. I recently picked up a beautiful Irwin 4000-8” Phillips head screwdriver at the junk shop for $2 and you can tell the quality of the steel simply by the way it polishes up so easily. The handle also says made in US of A and writing it that way, to me, shows pride in your product. It also has the following stamped into the steel shaft: PHILLIPS-LIC 40. PAT 250723. CHROME VANADIUM. NO 4 PT. USA That’s a lot of information to stamp into the steel shaft. The modern toasters may have all the bells and whistles but I find it hard to find one that actually toast bread properly, that is, a nice and even golden brown all over. I like mine at about A5 thanks, thick sliced of course. Cheers mate, Stuart 🇦🇺
I have a 1950's doorbell that does a first-quarter Westminster Chime. It has a synchronous motor that revolves for one revolution with a cam to sound the bells. It is magnificent.
My parents' house had a similar set of chimes. They are functional to this day 75 years later. In the early '70s, they got a little puppy from my uncle. This dog was afraid of the cellar steps because they were open backed. I tried everything to coax this little dog up those steps. Nothing worked. For the heck of it, I went out on the front porch and rang the doorbell. That dog shot up those steps like nothing. It worked 100% of the time !
@@ScoutCrafter Oh yea. If you're ever out west, come on by! You'd like the 1950 RCA broadcast transmitter converted to the 80m band. It's huge, inefficient, glows in the dark, and sounds so sweet on the ham band.
Thats wild the old toaster still works! I had a Sony watchman, dang thing never did really get good reception. When I was a kid Id go to my grandmothers and would ring the door bell sometimes out front sometimes out back. I always was amazed how she knew what door I was at. When I was in my teens she finally told me the front door had a different ring to the back door, that was her secret 😂😂 She got a good laugh out of that!!
Hi John. Great video. I love those meets that you go to. Would you believe. I made one of those horses when I was in high school. You could only pass if didn't break when he stood on it 😮. Thank God I passed 😅. Great memories. I also had one of those calculators. Mine worked with room lighting. Oh so long ago. Have a great weekend.👍👍❤🤠...
You got some terrific finds. Looking at those tables brought back memories. Another fantastic show. As much as I enjoy whatever you’re working on, I always just love seeing the flag flying.
I have never thought of until today... but the house I'm in now is the only one that has ever had a door bell... 😅 and its one those wireless deals... my daughters little chihuahua just loves it😅😅😅😅
We had an old toaster that lasted us some good 20 years. The next one we bought was a more moddern one and I'ld be surprised if it lasted more than a year. I don't think we ever had chimes like the one you showed l, while growing up. But now I REALLY NEED one. Simple, beautiful, robust and just awesome. Thanks for sharing, take care!
Mid 60s Door Chime in this house, still works perfectly, even the original buttons on the doors. Little different case but almost the same as that one and the tone is exact, I felt the urge to go answer the door when you set it off.
Great variety at the swap meet. I saw some nice vises, and was surprised to see so many vintage wooden sleds. The toaster still works great. Queens didn't black out when you plugged it in.😅 I didn't see any fraying in the cloth covered electrical cord. All the toaster needs is a good Scoutcrafter cleanup and it will shine in all its art deco glory. The small wrench only needs a cleanup and lubrication to look like new.
Great video 👍 Awesome video at Elephant’s Trunk,L👀k like they had some fantastic deals there.👍👍 I can see that Cape Buffalo head hanging in your attic .🐃 😃👍That vintage Hellmann’s mayonnaise jar looked really good, great graphics. That Dunlap adjustable wrench 🔧 looks fantastic, awesome find! It reminds me of the Craftsman ones. The Billings #97 will be a fantastic video for the show👍🔥. I think 🤔 the star ⭐️ of the show was that vintage toaster. The toast🍞came out great!,All it needed was a little spread of butter 🧈 and some jelly 🍇🍓🍊or honey 🍯😋😂👍👍. That Door 🚪 Bell 🔔 sounded Awesome! ,great deal for N.O.S. , plus you can’t beat that Craftsman sliding T bevel for a $1 dollar 💵, looked really nice 👍. That is great to have around in the shop. I like my toast 🍞light, similar to the one you made in the show. 👍 Another Great Shot of Old Glory 🇺🇸 flying in the Breeze. Well again great video and can’t wait to see what you do on Monday. Have a great evening and fantastic weekend! 😃👍👍
Still like the flag flying in the breeze the best of all. That being said, found that plumbers tool very interesting, the Elephant trunk tour fun to watch, which leads me to ask, how did the name Elephant trunk get its name, I find it unique. Thanks for the update, enjoyed watching.
At my grand parents they had a twist doorbell mounted in the door, us kids would race to ring that bell. Drove them nuts. It was the highlight of our visit.
You're either a mind reader or been snooping in my barn😂. I have a thing for vintage toasters, old tools, and really cool junk . I actually looked at Hellmann's mayo bottle today at a junk shop. You got a good deal for $1.00. I like my toast dark, but not burnt. You should do a toaster restoration. Good stuff as usual. 😀👍🏻🇺🇲
Door Bell? Just mentioning to my Wife, we need one of those hanging bells that stores used to put above their doors to alert them that customers were entering to shop.
You mean man is not responsible for the planets weather change...lol 100% CORRECT Sir couldn't agree more on your assessment .Another great vid Thanks !!
They tried to fool me in the 70’s with the impending Ice age… Then Al Gore Guaranteed the ice caps would be gone five years ago- One thing I have learned is that the title “Scientist” is worthless now. 😂😂😂
That toaster could power the steam on the USS Nimitz! LOL! I love the nice door chimes. You’re right the bell would scare the crap out of ya! Grandma had that same sounding door chime. The good ol’ days!
Thanks John, I really enjoyed the short tour of the flea market, I've never seen so many sledges ! When we were first married (1990) we went through a number of toasters in a few years, so we splashed out on a Dualit toaster which cost about 5 times as much, but we're still using it today 30 years later, I've replaced one of the elements but they're designed to be maintained ! We've also had the same door bell since then ( 2 houses ) and it has that same pleasant two-tone chime - ours is powered by 4 C-Cell batteries and I think I've only changed them twice in all that time !
Amazing. We had a doorbell with those exact front and back door tones and we also had a toaster like that. With 8 family members however the toast came out it would be perfect for someone. When it died I went to the green stamp store with mom and got a modern one. Good memories today.
The best doorbell was the Westminster Chime doorbell TY Sears Catalog But very hard to explain one of the classics was the Doorbell that Built in the wooden front door that you would had to turn by hand and crank to get that Classic doorbell chime .. As for the Old School Toasters one of the best Toasters you will ever buy The old saying Buy once Cry once .. My Father's favorite was for a Mid evening snack was Black Coffee and 2 slices of Toast with butter ... Mr John have a great weekend looking forward to Mondays video
Roger- I don’t think people truly appreciate how revered toast was years ago. It was everywhere and enjoyed by everyone. My only problem today is getting the butter to spread on the toast as it’s hard when cold. 😂👍
I got a toaster like that at an estate sale this summer. The young whipper snappers helping with the sale didn't know what it was until i told them. I haven't dared to plug it in yet.
I like my toast "frightened" i.e. as though all the colour drained away. My school conned all my year into spending vast amounts on LED calculators in the late seventies by "recommending" the model - an expensive "cheaper" one, and a vastly more expensive one with a few extra scientific functions (I suspect sales commission might have been involved) - Texas Instruments if memory serves. More memories dredged up by your eclectic mix of items. Thanks, Scoutcrafter!
Great stuff and I still have to take a road trip to that flea market one of these days because it always fascinates me and now my son is talking about it to maybe a Spring road trip 👍
I repaired many toasters back in the early 1980's as an apprentice. Back when you could buy and replace parts. Now the elements are spot welded in, so even if you could find a replacement it would be almost impossible to replace.
I like my toast just the way you made it, smothered with butter and either raspberry preserve or peanut butter. I had English muffins this morning done that way.
Our home when I was a kid did not have one. I’m in my 4th home and I still don’t have one. I have 2 live ones, Rosey and Nicki. Your toaster you scored is a very nice addition. I love it. We have a 4 slice we have had for 40 plus years. I had to replace the power cord about 5 years ago. It’s used often in our home. The flea market you went to I would love to go. Here in California it’s basically non existent . Great show, thank you.
At 14:14 on the door chimes picture top left corner champion I still have the hanging and operational in my hallway in my house. House was built in 1966. And the original transformer in the basement downstairs😊
In my college days I used the TI calculators with the LED displays. I remember thinking how cool the LCD's were when they came out. Wow! That toaster is fantastic. I've never seen one like that before. It was either on the top of the wood stove at the grandparents or the old pop-up that mom had.
Love the see the fair what a beautiful day there Great show John fantastic Friday man the big five Cape buffalo So dangerous the hunt the hunters god bless take care 🇺🇸🇳🇿🇮🇱🗽🦅🪖🐕45-47DJT
Toaster. When I bought my house in a new city (due to work) in the 90's, it had a toaster built-in to the wall above the kitchen counter. Never saw one before! Did we use it? Heck no! It was easy to tell that it hadn't been used in years, and I didn't like the idea of hot coils inside my wall. Finally removed it and re-tiled the backsplash above the counters. Thanks.
Hey John, I have a Nutone doorbell. I never paid it much attention and didn't know much about it until about 6 years ago when I decided to renovate my foyer. Took the bell down, stripped off the layers of paint it had accumulated and re-painted, polished and restored. Learned a lot about these cool Nutone doorbells when Google searching. Mine has two chimes but as you showed some were made much more elaborate with 3 or 4 chimes. I'm familiar with the spud tool also and have had to use it on a home radiator. Thanks for the great video, best way to unwind after a week at work.
We had one of those doorbells with the long chimes. We replaced it with a small bell, a mistake in my opinion. I was fascinated by the disconnected chime tubes and dropped one straight-arrow on my big toe at age ten. It hurt like heck, and the nail came off!
John, my wife keeps getting mad at me because I own over a dozen vintage toasters. Even did a demonstration where I showed our fancy brand new toaster compared to one of the old ones on a speed trial. All of the old toasters work twice as fast as the new expensive ones, that’s what happens when the government gets involved in our appliances. Price Goes up, efficiency goes down “I’m from the government and I’m here to help! “.
Another great video. I have installed one of those Nutone doorbells with three long chimes in the basement. I got it for nothing, but it's great when it goes off.
Yes! Phil is really a swell guy, his wife is a sweetheart too. He enjoys cleaning and re-selling tools and really does well because he doesn’t try to make a killing. 😃👍
We had a door BUZZER at home, which is even worse than a ringing bell. My Dad installed it because at work, at his job in the tool cage, he answered a ringing bell most of the day.
Yeah, door bells have gone out of fashion. I never noticed that. I suppose the Ring camera is bringing them back though. I like all my food well cooked. Dark toast.
Having lived in California for a short time I always thought it must have been the best place ever in the 50’s and 60’s. I watch Highway Patrol and think what a perfect place. Now CA is a madhouse! 😂👍
Hey Scout. What’s the best way to preserve a paper label like that? I have several on vintage containers that I am concerned they will deteriorate if I don’t do something soon.
I know! Paper seems to dissolve with temperature and humidity changes. I think keeping them in a constant humidity and temperature will help them last. 😃👍
That is mica, not mylar, in the toaster. Love your videos. You bring back many memories for me. I was in High School in the 1960s. My folks got a door bell and they entrusted me to install it, which I did--wired the device and the front and back door buttons. Big project for a high schooler.
Haven’t had a slice of toast at home in years, it’s usually an english muffin or on rare occasions, a bagel. Up until a few years ago we used a toaster oven that had been left in our first house by the previous owner. My parents house had a walk-out basement whose door opened to our driveway. The front door had the double chime, the back door had the single chime. The button by the basement door was connected to a buzzer in the kitchen that was very loud and annoying. Friends and relatives always came to the back door. Only Jehovah’s witnesses and trick or treaters came to the front door. The basement door bell was used so rarely that we would just about jump out of our skins when it did buzz and it would take a second or two to remember what that particular noise meant.
My cat didn’t react at all to the doorbell in your video. Not even in the slightest. He has only ever lived in my apartment that has no doorbell. My cats in the past that lived in houses with doorbells would’ve reacted. Anytime someone comes over, they text me “I’m here”, the phone dings, i read the text, and i go meet them at the security door.
You probably know how, and may check the toaster and other equipment with an ohmeter for continuity(if the heating element is broke) and more importantly check that there is no continuity or connection to the frame(shock hazard). I do not have any old appliance cord to look at this morning to look for polarity markings, however, for a few decades or more 2 wire line cords are marked with molded lines or stripes to indicate wire for neutral. Many also have a larger prong to assure plug orientation. Thanks again, Merek
It ain't toast unless it's one shade under being burnt. What you did to those poor pieces of bread, I would consider it being borderline cruel 😀. Thanks for another great video!!!
It would have been so funny if you opened up the toaster and the toast was black.😮😅 Looking forward to seeing the # 97 wrench done. Have a Jesus filled day everyone Greg in Michigan
The nichrome wire holders/formers in the toaster are NOT Mylar. Mylar is a plastic that burns. They are Mica, a naturally occurring mineral that is transparent, and is extremely heat resistant.
You beat me to it. 😁
That’s so funny- In my brain I was thinking Mica (I have a collection of) but somehow Mylar came out of my pie hole.. 🫣😂😂👍
@@ScoutCrafter Oh boy, don't I know how that is!

The live ones are much better! 😂👍
At 14:14 on the door chimes picture top left corner champion I still have the hanging and operational in my hallway in my house.
House was built in 1966.
And the original transformer in the basement downstairs😊
I remember my freshman year in college paying $150 for a Texas Instruments calculator with the LED display that was the size of a brick.
In my college days I used the TI calculators with the LED displays. I remember thinking how cool the LCD's were when they came out.
Wow! That toaster is fantastic. I've never seen one like that before. It was either on the top of the wood stove at the grandparents or the old pop-up that mom had.
Love the see the fair what a beautiful day there
Great show John fantastic Friday man the big five Cape buffalo
So dangerous the hunt the hunters god bless take care 🇺🇸🇳🇿🇮🇱🗽🦅🪖🐕45-47DJT
I still have my Sony Watchman that I bought in NYC for $160..It was the larger screen..4"
I have my Panasonic Battery TV too. It was cool back in the day. 😂👍
Thanks.
That’s amazing! 😃👍
I have the same Texas Instruments calculator in the box too. Love the old toasters.
Ken- the prices of some more elaborate NuTone bells are out of this world! 😃👍
OMG. we had a toaster just like that one. Brings back memories. Great video.
We had one of those doorbells with the long chimes. We replaced it with a small bell, a mistake in my opinion. I was fascinated by the disconnected chime tubes and dropped one straight-arrow on my big toe at age ten. It hurt like heck, and the nail came off!
Dark toast and that was my first toaster when I left home at 17. Really works well
Hi Scoutcrafter what would be funny if you rigged the button for that bell under a seat cushion so when someone sits down it rings.
John- There is something wonderful about vintage toasters- The early concepts were fascinating! 😃👍
Actually I like my toast medium, not burnt. It's interesting with the evolution of the door bells and in the 80's they started playing songs.
I like my toast light. The other word used to describe dark toast is burnt😂
Two great items that take me back to childhood. Love it. 😊
John. Still love your videos. Never missed a one. Happy Thanksgiving from Cullman, Al..Jerry & Nikki T.
Thanks!!! 😃👍
Another great video. I have installed one of those Nutone doorbells with three long chimes in the basement. I got it for nothing, but it's great when it goes off.
I’ve bought from Phil at Elephant’s Trunk. A nice King Dick Auto wrench. We both had a laugh over the name and it was only $2 or so. Great guy!
Yes! Phil is really a swell guy, his wife is a sweetheart too. He enjoys cleaning and re-selling tools and really does well because he doesn’t try to make a killing. 😃👍
@@ScoutCrafterI just noticed there I am standing in the frame at Phil’s table holding a wrench 😂. 4:55
Dark toast. Its funny some of the higher end toasters of today use the retro look because they had clsss. Just like the old cars. Thanks for sharing.
Dark toast.
Light, thanks John.
I have a toaster just like that one that was my parents.
Looking forward to that 97 being restored when you get round to it 👍
I like my toast light but the rest of breakfast is well done that's a cool bell I remember when they were popular in 70s
Mr. J.
Growing up in San Francisco in the 50"s we didn't have a door bell or keys to the front door. My how times have changed.
Having lived in California for a short time I always thought it must have been the best place ever in the 50’s and 60’s. I watch Highway Patrol and think what a perfect place. Now CA is a madhouse! 😂👍
Ding dong you had my dogs running to the front door.😅
Looks like that yellow circuit tester could use a wipe-down with that “product who shall not be named”
😂😂😂😂
Those vintage NuTone chimes can be crazy expensive on eBay! 😂👍
I like the chime doorbell! I like my toast medium, just a little bit of crunch.
i WISH we had flea markets like this where i live
My cat didn’t react at all to the doorbell in your video. Not even in the slightest. He has only ever lived in my apartment that has no doorbell. My cats in the past that lived in houses with doorbells would’ve reacted.
Anytime someone comes over, they text me “I’m here”, the phone dings, i read the text, and i go meet them at the security door.
Gotcha 👍👍🔩🔩
You probably know how, and may check the toaster and other equipment with an ohmeter for continuity(if the heating element is broke) and more importantly check that there is no continuity or connection to the frame(shock hazard). I do not have any old appliance cord to look at this morning to look for polarity markings, however, for a few decades or more 2 wire line cords are marked with molded lines or stripes to indicate wire for neutral. Many also have a larger prong to assure plug orientation. Thanks again,
Merek
Merek - Those older cloth cords were usually a dead giveaway if the appliance had issues! 🫣😂👍
I hear elephant trunk is moving to south Jersey !! That will be so nice...let them come down here for a change...🤥🖖
I like my toast to the dark side!🔥
Someone always knocks on the door after the strange music in the wall
I just saw almost the same toaster in a local "junk shop" earlier today.
It ain't toast unless it's one shade under being burnt. What you did to those poor pieces of bread, I would consider it being borderline cruel 😀. Thanks for another great video!!!
😂😂😂
Think you mean mica not mylar in the toaster 😁👍
Toast I'm a bit odd I like thin bread toasted light but thick sliced dark.
Great video .. thank you .. those old calculator desplay is not led .. they are vfd . Vacuum flourscent display .. 🎉🎉🎉
VFD were the step between LED and LCD- They were often Greenish or Bluish in color. The Early LED Texas Instrument Calculators were Red. 😃👍
Oh what a nice door bell. The present trend is to stand in front of the door and call using the mobile.
It would have been so funny if you opened up the toaster and the toast was black.😮😅
Looking forward to seeing the
# 97 wrench done.
Have a Jesus filled day everyone Greg in Michigan
Greg- Unlike pop-up toasters this toaster is totally reliant on your estimation. Either that or check on it every fifteen seconds. 🫣😂👍
