The probe you cleaned up is called a thermo well. The actual temp probe is inside the thermo well. Usually these thermo wells are stainless steel. The temp probe is usually brass or copper.

I have a similar remote reading thermometer designed to monitor truck exhaust temperatures, has a really long armoured capillary tube too. Our last house (1991) had about twenty-five large pressure gauges display mounted on a basement wall...the seller left them undesturbed, for $25. He said the gauges came from Great Lakes freighters.

Temp and pressure gauges are commonly just thrown out. In a big power plant you have hundreds of them. 30 years ago they were fixed and calibrated. Now it all electronics
Question for you John what is the functional purpose of the hole in the head of the spade bit? I'm sure it's not there for decorative reasons. I know people claim it's there for feeding cable but I just don't see it, the hole a spade bit bores is so large I don't see feeding a cable being an issue.
Matthew I too was wondering the same thing, I too have heard the hole was for pulling wire but it doesn’t sit well with me. I could see if the bit was 12” long but why on short bits? I’m with you- still wondering. 😃👍

This afternoon I will be ferreting through my old drill bit drawer. Then scrounging the scrap metal bin for old copper waterpipe for ferrule material. A quick fossick in the woodpile for a piece of gum tree, and it will be time to spin the lathe up. The good part about doing it yourself is that you actually start the project with the best quality materials.

I’m not sure about New York but in CT the utility is only responsible for the wire to the house and the meter. The customer is responsible for the wire running down the side of the house and the wire from the meter to the panel.

Nice work on the scraper! I love shop built tools. Especially those made from "scrap". I've made several screw drivers from spade bits. I have a lathe so turning a handle is no big deal. I used brass pipe for the ferrule and epoxied the shank of the spade bit in place. One screw driver was for the cap iron screw on my antique hand planes and one was specially made for the brass nuts on saw handles.
A great idea! I bet you can take one of those and make a nail/tack puller by cutting in a "V" shape to the hole and maybe bending the spade at a sight angle. What do you think?
You definitely know the shop culture by assuming that there are old spade bits lying around for repurposing. In my case you're right. I have several I didnt want to get rid of, so they look like good candidates for gasket scraping. Your DIY projects are cool because you tell us how to get parts like handles etc. In case we need them.
I know exactly what that guage is from. That went to a commercial sized boiler. They are still required to this day to have guages that large, but go much higher in temperature.

You can use an old spade bit as a firewood splitter too, we had a few of those in the military. Fairly effective and safer than an axe for all the recruits that, to put it mildly, varied in intelligence and technical know-how.
Thats a well that the probe fits into that's so you could change the gauge without draining the tank or steam line without bringing the system down. Operating Engineer here retired yes just bend the tube back by hand.

That scraper is as good as my Snapon. Heck of a deal on the temp gauge but probably because they sell other things. Someone said hey would you sell this for me? That person is less than thrilled and the guy selling stuff won't be asked to sell stuff so he wins as well. 🤣🤣 Be glad you had rain. We had 8" of wet snow.

Nice job on the scraper. I did something similar about 6 months back. I used a 1/2" bit and but cut it shorter and ground the shaft into a hex to fit in the bit holder on my multi tool. I love that gauge. What a steal at $11 delivered. You need a 5gal bucket with a sump pump in it under the electrical box. Or if you have a drain in the floor you can make a Rube Goldberg funnel system you can erect when it rains.

I sort of passed by you on Sunday. Went to Staten Island for a youth bowling tournament. On the way there the gps sent me I95 to 695 to 278. On the way back it was just 278 to I95. About two hours in the morning, three hours to get home, and the was in the middle of the afternoon. Thank goodness my team was one of the first two eliminated.
John, isn't there any way to shelter the leak source from the outside with some clever use of flashing? That is A LOT of water coming thru your electric box. We may be able to give some ideas to you if you posted some exterior pics. Would love to help out!

Thanks John, I love me a homemade tool, one of my favourite go to scrapers I made from a 16" palette knife that had rusted through, I cut of the flexible part (about 9") and was left with a 2" scraper blades on a beautiful rosewood handle (full tang). You should be getting a refund on your electric bill, that water ingress is a disgrace - your basement is going to turn into one giant Electrolysis tank ! ⚡ That temperature gauge was a bargain, I know you don't mind paying for quality so I was going for $50 - shows what I know ! 😉
One time I asked for pointers on shaping my new brake line at the auto parts store. I was told that some people fill their brake line tubing with playground sand before bending / forming them, then blow out the sand with compressed air. I didn't end up trying it, but it sounded plausible. Maybe that will work for you?
NICE thermometer, Pal!. I got a hyfraulic pressure gauge I was going to put on the wood splitter about that size and it was just too big so it's still here. I sharpened all my spade bits but used to draw file putty knives and they made good scrapers too. And we can get 3 or 4 inches of rain after lunch/dinner and have a sunset that evening. I wish I would have known about cut off wheels when I built my t bucket. I cut everything with my hacksaw. I have a scraper made out of a file with an aluminum handle. It is wonderful for scraping contact cement off my table. That’s why we keep them broken tools. All you need is a need and a creative mind. When I was working I had to have shock proof boots and gloves up to 10 thousand volts. Just be careful when you have water coming out your electrical box. I want more videos to be entertained not a fried scoutcrafter! Thank You

Roll it back straight on a table, just as you would straighten a roll of brake line tubing.

The older I get the less I enjoy long drives. 3 hours one way is about my cutoff.

I only get water when we get 2.5” of rain or more. That used to be a very rare occurrence but now it’s not so rare! 😂👍

My Dad used spade bits for special patterns and designs and then used them for lathe turnings for one of a kind items. Bob from North Idaho

Ralph- When vertical the needle drops to its base detent. I should boil some water and see if it’s accurate mid range. 😃👍
