  • In this video I match up two different wireless meat thermometers to see which one is better. I will be doing a review of each thermometer as well as a review and comparison of both.
    The 2 thermometers I will be comparing are the MEATER + and The MeatStick.

    Great video. I purchased the Meater +. Using the MEATER Link WiFi vs. MEATER Cloud Wireless Distance documentation, I was able to connect the Meater + to a tablet then use my cell to monitor my Meater + probe from anywhere on my two acer yard. I also tested the cloud and was able to continuously monitor my probe from my grand-daughters soccer game 32 miles away. COOK ON!!!!!

      It is an awesome option if you need to leave your house and have an extra phone or tablet available.
      The MeatStick also has a similar function as well.

    Good review. One point you mentioned but sort of glossed over was the perpendicular set up required for the Meatstick. On your big rig that is no issue but for smaller cookers that arrangement could be an issue. Especially if the meat needs to be moved around a bit during the cook. Just thought I'd mention it as some viewers are sure to be like me (I'd guess).

      Yes, you are 100% correct. I realized that after when I was using it on my Pit Barrel Cooker. I didn't notice a difference when I had the probe in different locations. It shouldn't be an issue I just wanted to relay the info I got from The MeatStick's website. Thank you for bringing that up in the comments so others can hopefully see this.

    The type of steak would be important for the block Meater that has 4 probes. It would be more recognizable as to which cut is at what temp, instead of constantly figuring out which probe number the “steak” is to figure out what is done.
    I cooked some porterhouses and 2” ribeyes and it was nice to know probe 1&2 were my ribeyes and 3&4 were the porterhouses.

    Great video, very helpful. I have a Meater Block and not loving it. Probe is not accurate (yes, inserted fully etc.) and almost lost a Wagyu as the Meater was close to 20F off (showing 20 lower than actual). I popped in my Thermapen as I was suspicious of the readings on the Meater and just in time to save the steak. So the Meater is an expensive fail for me. Interested in the MeatStick though as a result of your video, so I'll be giving that a try.

      The Thermapen is my go to for basically everything, It is by far the best thermometer out there. For a wireless thermometer though The Meatstick has been much better for me then the Meater. I am always using my Thermopen though, because I know its always accurate.

    I think you should point out that the Meater Block doesn't have range issues (neither does the Meatstick Bridge Set) because they employ wi-fi instead of Bluetooth. So the question then becomes, without range as an issue, which one is preferable?

    • @SmokestackJoes
      @SmokestackJoes  Год назад

      I don’t have any experience using the MEATER block or the MeatStick bridge set so I couldn’t make a comment on them. I’m sure the range would be better using those sets. That being said I would still prefer the MeatStick because it is waterproof and can be used for deep frying (which I will have a video on soon)
      Thank you for the comment

    • @mikeg6069
      @mikeg6069 Год назад +1

      @@SmokestackJoes I would tend to agree. While I have a Meater Block and love all that it does for me when I'm cooking, the waterproofness of the Meatstick probe is important when washing/cleaning the probe. No water can get inside the ambient end and render the probe useless (I've heard some have a problem with that). But another thing that's a practical advantage, and the one design decision I have an issue with the Meater about, is the Meatstick's insertion end is way more pointed than the Meater's insertion end. The Meater's probe has a rounded kind of blunt end which makes it more difficult to insert into the meat. I'd imagine the Meatstick's probe would be much easier to insert.

    • @SmokestackJoes
      @SmokestackJoes  Год назад +1

      @@mikeg6069 I am glad you brought up to bluntness of the meater probe tip. I wanted to mention that as well. The more pointed tip of the meatstick definitely helps it go into the meat easier.

    Haven't ever used either, in fact that's why I'm here. I have watched a video directly from Meater, and according to their instructions, the orientation of your phone was wrong. As soon as you finished setting up your cooks times and temps, you laid your phone flat on the counter. In his video, he specifically said to have your phone up right leaning against something. He left it on a small table within feet of his grill. Then linked to a tablet he had inside with him. Not sure if this is why your connection failed. But he was very specific. Without explaining specifically Why.

    • @SmokestackJoes

      Thanks for the comment, I was not aware of that information. It sounds like they were using a phone as an extender which I was not doing. Using a phone as an extender and then connecting to that with another phone or tablet would definitely help with the distance.

    I put my meater plus block about 15 to 25 feet from my smoker / grill. This gives me enough range on my phone. I agree their range is falsely advertised / terrible, but you can get better by moving your block 15 to 25 feet away. I haven't had any problems with the block losing connection at that distance.
    I always go into the advanced settings and check up see how the block and meater probe are connected.

    • @SmokestackJoes
      @SmokestackJoes  Год назад +1

      This is very good advice. The distance you can keep the block away also depends on what kind of cooker you are using. I found with my bigger smoker which is thicker I have to keep the block closer.

    • @underourrock
      @underourrock Год назад

      @@SmokestackJoes true, but I bet you a hamburger that you could move it away from that little table on the smoker itself and gain at least a few feet. :). Possibly more.
      Also, think about position relative to the smoker.. there is a fire box with a path for signals to get out... You might find that from the fire box end you might get more distance. Dunno if that helps relative to the house though... Might be the wrong direction.
      I definitely agree that there advertised distance is not realistic at all. If you cook on an open pit spit I don't think you'd get more than about 100' to 125' total. I live in a very rural area with not too much interference on the frequencies Bluetooth uses... And I'm good if I can get about 80 to 100 feet of distance through 1 wall.

    You spent some time showing the alerts on the meat stick, but did not mention that MEATER does the same, but not limited to just 4. Also MEATER has repeater that allows you to use Wi-Fi, and you can go anywhere you want.

    • @SmokestackJoes
      @SmokestackJoes  Год назад

      Both the MEATER and The MeatStick have the option for wifi repeater which is the best option when you have to be far away from the probes. I had recorded segments for that but had to remove them from the video as it was already a very long video.

      @SmokestackJoes  2 года назад

      Thank you. I did have some issues linking my MeatStick when I first got it but it has been very good since then.
      I found out that when you are setting up your cook you need to keep the probe in the base, then when the app prompts you to insert it you should remove it from the base and insert it into the meat.
      Idk why it is more difficult when you first get it to link but after I've used it a few times it links up fine with no issues.
      Please let me know if you have anymore questions, I am happy to help!

    Great video, but one small item of note, you were very focused on the distance and in reading on the Meater, if you turn on the app before removing the probe from the base it will connect to your phone app not the base and you will only end up with 33' range. In order to get the greater range you have to completely close the app before you remove the probe from the base, that way when you remove the probe from the base it will connect to the base, not the app. Then you turn the app on it connects to the base, not the probe, and the app has a greater range with the base then it does the probe.
