Once I learned about understitching I because obsessed! A lot of newer pattern companies recommned to top stitch everything for a "clean Crisp" finish, but I much rather prefer to understitch! Pressng after understitching is so satisfying!
Under stitching is so overlooked and it definitely makes a huge difference. You are such a great teacher. Watching your videos s always so pleasure and easy to understand, and I also love your dress patterns from Butterick and cotton sateen fabric ( they are my favourite fabric to work with , and your collection is so gorgeous)
I love under stitching and the results you get. I wonder why you always use the sleeve arm at the sewing machine and not a flat bed! I know it helps to fold the fabric but it is more comfortable when the fabric can lay out, I think. 🧐
It’s just my personal preference on this particular machine. The flat bed on the Bernina 1008 is quite awkward to get on and off so I got used to sewing this way and now it suits me best to sew without the flat bed attachment on this machine only.
Hi Gertie, I am desperate to find someone to teach me how to make my clothes. I am a petite and can't find clothes to fit. Do you have any videos to sew along with a tank top for starters? Tops are my worst trouble. How will I see this answer?
Thank you for a great vid, I have to admit I used to skip this step, but not any more!! P.S. I love your top (and the one on your dressmakers dummy) which pattern is it? xxx
I couldn’t understand this concept fully until I found your video. Please do more videos on the basics for us newbies! You’re such an amazing teacher.
The sound of that Bernina 1008 is pure magic.

Is clipping & notching the same thing as using pinking shears? So much to learn 😊
No. Pinking shears are used to keep fabric from fraying excessively. Clipping and notching are done to help curved seams to lay flat.

Found it, I am now a Daisy Scout!! :o) xxx
Oh! It’s sort of like felling a seam. Right?
In general, will trimming down the seam to 1/8 make it weaker?
The stitching will help reinforce the seam so it won't weaken.
You are amaaaaaaazing 😘😘👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Can understitching be compared to French seam?
Not really. A french seam is a seam finishing technique. Understitching effects how the fabric lays in the garment.
