What to know about the CDK Global cyberattack disrupting car dealers

- A cyberattack on a company that provides software for thousands of car dealers in North America says it's a "ransom event." The hack on CDK Global happened last week and is still disrupting about 15,000 car sellers who depend on the company's software to run their businesses. CBS News MoneyWatch reporter Megan Cerullo has more.

That's not how that works. CDK is a repair order software for punching times and recording parts and repair history. Warranty is a document written by the manufacturer. Extended warranty is a document written by the seller
Now they need to do it to the rent software...!!!

Its been HELL at the dealership I work at. WHY we are even still open is a joke. The best way I can describe it is...... imagine trying to remember all your contacts info on your phone without a way to look it up! nuff said.

Did you heard the ransom amount? Who do you know personally has tens of millions of dollars? Only some businesses have that kind of cash flow, hackers don’t care about your $10k, ssn, phone or credit card it’s not worth the hassle, when you can legally sell them cybersecurity services for more a couple thousand

Why would a large car business not have a backup software to use? That's literally a single point of failure. I'm sure they have more than one paintless dent removal guy to call, or a painter and body shop that they use. - I'm talking for sales only, not all the other stuff the software can do, obviously.

Service departments are down as well. Our family is juggling transportation until a major recall/warranty issue can be resolved. We are all learning to have more grace and patience when circumstances are outside our control.

It’s a great day for Consumers-tired of getting ripped off by insane markups over Manufacturer’s list prices and idiotic tack on warranties for undercoating your car. No reason for their existence with Amazon and the other internet companies.

Today it's the dealers, tomorrow they hack the EVs. Hope you aren't driving one when they shut down your car or start a runaway battery fire while it's parked.
If they can shut down an EV they can shut down any newer car. And regular cars run on gas which is also pretty flammable and creates toxic fumes when the engine is on.
This also makes me think about all the digital data that could get hacked from the infotainment center of vehicles. Every time I get a service loaner there's previous users info in it.
Im on maternity leave from the dealer rn and im seriously considering about going back, were not gonna get paid for all this headache
I hope this puts CDK out of business. It is far to large of a company to make a simple mistake like this that affects all of its users. Mistakes like that should end your career and you should be flipping burgers from now on.

I don’t understand why they say more than half of the dealers in the U.S use CDK and also the rest of the few dealers use different software, that’s completely not true, cdk makes up a huge percentage but there’s about 71,000 dealers in the U.S as of 2024 and CDK is connected with 15,000 dealers.
This is SAD, such a big company prone to that, but this is because they pay low grade salaries for tech workers, given the fact that they offer a Security analyst $25-28 an hour is pretty sad, I would not work for a company like that.
You know something is up when they shake or get nervous during the interview or questioning

And how are ppl going to manually write paperwork in the future when they don't teach kids write as much while moving to mostly digital/typing stuff? I had a convo with my sis the other day about how school lied to me. I have a permanent writers' bump on my middle finger from all those notes they forced us to write in class and now kids don't have to do that. They can just use their ipad/computers to record notes. 🤨Obsolete forced skill -and I'm and Art major (Design), the forced "skill" isn't even utilized with or without tech advancements.

So CDK has poor security, they get hacked, dealerships use pen and paper, I’m sure they will upcharge for paperwork fees. Yeah, I don’t think the consumer should have to pay for a company’s lack of cyber security . CDK, you are on the hook for this.
Dealers gonna use this is as reason to raise prices and extra documentation fees like that already have since dealers existed
