    I've always boiled my rice with half teaspoon of lime or lemon juice, then use a colander and drain it well; it's much healthier for me, being a diabetic. I don't use oil or salt and no one ever said that they didn't like my rice; it taste very good!

      sorry it maybe less calories but the calories that are in the resistant starch are not digested in the small intestents - so it doesn't matter anyway. but in the large intestent there are healthy gut bacterias that need to be fed. and the resistant starches are that kind of carbs that are for you gut bacterias. these calories are not counting anyway.

    Reduce calorie absorption by cooling & refrigerating cooked rice overnight then consume in a cold or reheat recipe. Cooling rice changes the rice grain structure to create "resistant starch" which is unavailable for human digestion but as a plus feeds essential gut flora which keeps humans healthy. Acids like vinegar or lemon juice also slow down the starch digestion

      Research info: adding coconut oil while boiling rice and then refrigerating cooked rice for 12 hours converts starch to resistant starch or indigestible starch. Removing starch water does not remove much starch from rice,

    • @alexandraabraham253

      This method actually doesn't reduce the starch at all. Please see my reply below, to Chhaya J...

    • @alexandraabraham253
      @alexandraabraham253 6 лет назад

      Chhaya J, completely agree. Cooking the rice as in the video actually doesn't reduce the starch content of the rice, at all. The addition of coconut oil to the cooking water, and the cooling/refrigeration/reheating process, combine to change the physical and chemical compounds of the rice.

    I eat fermented foods such as sauerkraut and kimchi before a meal with the cold white rice left overnight at the fridge. I feel like the cold rice is more satiating and heavy than freshly cooked rice and also it that I eat less only half a cup or a cup of rice everyday. I only eat one meal a day roughly less than 1000 calories and walk for 45 to an hour depending on the weather.

      +Seerat Noureen 1 cup of cooked long grain white rice has 205 calories, out of which 90% comes from starch( carbohydrates)...Now, we do not have an exact measure of how much starch is actually removed, but If it is assumed that we are able to get rid of all the starch during this process, that means we are reducing 180 calories, leaving us with 25 calories per cup of destarched white rice. This number is an approximation based on info from this site www.fatsecret.com/calories-nutrition/usda/white-rice-(long-grain-cooked) I would recommend you to read the description of the video for more info, on how to get a nutritious healthy meal while eating de-starched rice.

      Madhukar Tyagi the calories reduced really doesn't matter just as the reduced calories in a sugar-free yogurt could be as low as 10 calories. It is a starch content that matters with this technique because it doesn't destabilize blood sugar and makes the rest of the starch in the rice harder to absorb into the body. So the calories make no difference. Elizabeth MD PhD nutrition science

      @@poonamskitchen hi there, im on intermittent fasting and keto and i do some cheat days twice or three times a month. Regular cooked rice was one of my diet. I want to ask if your method is to reduced the starch from the rice, say, 80%, does it still have great amount of other carbohydrates that spikes insulin when eaten? thanks

  • @1cathexis
    @1cathexis 3 года назад +1

    Yes, rinsing rice reduces starch. But that doesn't mean it isn't still full of carbohydrates regardless. What else is in it? 46 gm Carb., 4.9 gm Prot., 0.4 gm Fat. So it is still virtually all carbs and the same basic 200 calories (all that from 1 cup steamed white rice). Now, how MUCH rice is in your diet? My friends who come from Indian/Asian heritage eat HUGE amounts which by itself destroys the argument you can use tricks to lower starch content. No offense, Poonam. But that is the truth: A Low Carb diet means low, not "lower."

    but is it really cooked after 5 minutes???? Hmmmmm....When mine is ready there's usually no water left in the pot 😕

      I used basmati rice that was soaked for half an hour. That gets cooked in 5 minutes, after adding rice to boiling water.

      Brown rice is too nutritious to discard its water. Therefore, it is not recommended by nutritionists to cook brown rice this way.

    hi I'm wondering if you can help please, you used 1 cup of rice how many calories is in this ? and then how many calories is it roughly after you drained the starch?
    I'm Asian too and rice is main food for us 😑 but I'm looking to lose weight! so I'm hoping this helps cos it's so hard to guess calories in curries and rice 😭😭😭
    thanks so much

      @apupella 8 лет назад +1

      i think thetaijicentre's info is another one to consider. the rice used in the clip is biryani rice and is different from jasmine or thai hom rice that asian usually consume. cleaning and then soaking biryani rice will produce a well cooked rice. but for most asian's rice, soaking will make the rice softer.

      1 cup of cooked long grain white rice has 205 calories, out of which 90% comes from starch( carbohydrates)...Now, we do not have an exact measure of how much starch is actually removed.This number is an approximation based on info from this site www.fatsecret.com/calories-nutrition/usda/white-rice-(long-grain-cooked) I would recommend you to read the description of the video for more info, on how to get a nutritious healthy meal while eating de-starched rice.

    De-Starched rice ...?....But you are welcoming high blood pressure and kidney damage with such a high salt intake !

    • @poonamskitchen
      @poonamskitchen  7 лет назад

      Soneelita, a few things to keep in mind..the salt is optional. If you choose to add salt, some of it gets drained away with the starchy water. Then divide the amount of salt by 3 because that's the number of servings out there. If you still feel that the salt content is high for a meal , you could always omit the salt in the rice.
      In Indian cuisine, salted rice will be eaten with plain yogurt (no more salt added in any other dish). If rice is eaten with a curry then salt is not added to the rice., because the curry has salt. The total salt intake is always balanced.

      The salt is all gone with the water drained ppl. Its logic,not hard to understand. Also , the rice was taking his salt from that water. Trust me thats not salty. I am doing my rice the same way ..no lemon tho. The way she did it its so totally fine.

    I thought the starch was good for you because it slows down the absorption of sugar from the rice? Idk, heard something like that before.

    • @poonamskitchen
      @poonamskitchen  8 лет назад +1

      The process reduces the starch content and the calories linked with it. This is a traditional preparation of rice and is recommended by nutritionists.

    • @vp4744

      @@alexandraabraham253 In the first option, the starch is not strained as the water is evaporated through the cooking process. That's why the kcals are higher. In the second option, the boling water the rice is cooking in is drained. This removes the starch, hence lower kcals.
