It's been a family way of cooking rice this way. I use parboiled rice and after draining you have almost no starch. Much safer to eat this rice and it does taste good. You can also cook it without the oil...just add more water when you are cooking the rice and drain off everything. Am so glad that you should shared this video bro. Not many would have thought it can benefit others..neither me. God bless.
Yes! You have a very good idea about using parboiled rice. I remember reading in a book about blood sugar control and the glycemic index, that parboiled rice--the kind that you buy in the grocery store is definitely significantly lower on the glycemic scale (measurement of blood sugar reaction for ingested foods). So, I am glad you mentioned it here! I believe anyone who is a Diabetic should ideally use the store-bought parboiled variety. Definitely!👍

Thank you for your video. We cook rice exactly like this but after draining the water we put it back on the stove with very low heat so it dries the rice well before consuming or we wrap a clean dishcloth over the lid, close the pot and put back the pot of rice on the stove with very low heat until the rice is nice and dry. We also run cold water into the rice after draining the boiled water, then strain it well before putting the rice back on the stove with very low heat to dry the rice well .... Enjoy!!
Today is a first for me to view your videos. I am amazed at how many people basically asked the same questions. I'm amazed at how many were going ape over the amount of water you used. And lastly I am amazed at how many want to argue against using rice period! Not every part of the world has water shortages! If some people have weaned themselves off rice and are convinced that they should never use it; then they shouldn't even be watching because they have already made up their minds about it. Lastly, the big failure here is that so few understand what factors about rice are not good for us. Rice has two bad characteristics: (1) it is heavily loaded with starch and starches are quickly and easily converted to sugars by our body's digestive system. By rinsing as you have done in your video, most of the starch is removed and it's much more healthy. (2) the 2nd bad property of rice is it has traces of arsenic which builds up in our bodies over time. I'm not sure if the rinsing method you use removes it or what the solution to the arsenic is. In concluding I do want to state that in wealthier countries people tend to eat too much which is extra harmful to a sedentary lifestyle. Most of us need to learn to learn that we don't have to glutton ourselves but eat wisely. Your video is very informative and helpful. Thanks.

@@FridayFriendlyKitchen Rice is the staple food of South Indians. They have been eating it for millenia......There is hardly any report about arsenic poisoning due to eating rice. Of course it depends on the chemical composition of the soil in which it is grown. But I would say it is within the safe limits for human consumption. The same goes for heavy metals in food, generally speaking.
@@601118385000 As I stated, rice has, "trace amounts of arsenic" and it's unknown if that has harmful effects. Arsenic, even in trace amounts builds up in our bodies over time but possibly never enough to do harm. Everything we consume is now being scrutinized to the nth degree. I was simply pointing it out. I am over 70 and I have eaten rice all my life; it's a favorite staple where I live. All things in moderation should be a part of our life style; a person can drink too much water and it would be bad for them.

Before adding oil, pls add a tablespoon of vinegar, boil for 5mins, then add oil.. The vinegars breaks down the starches, & what ever starch is left, the oil slows down the absorption in your gut..
I am not a diabetic patient but we are doing this long some couple of years. We also drained the water after the rice comes to boiled. The rice don't stick together though we don't put oil. After draining the rice simmer it for 5 minutes. Anyway thank you for your valuable advice. Appreciate it 👍

Good idea. Also if it is refrigerated overnight it's Glycemic Index will further reduce. Next day you may reheat before eating, same goes for cooked Potatoes.
A couple of things to reduce the glycemic index further is this; besides this rinsing method, start with Basmati rice, which tastes similar but has a lower glycemic index by around 20, as in 55-60 as opposed to 75-80. Secondly, you add black beans & small chunks of chicken or pork all mixed into the dish. Eating rice this way greatly reduces any glycemic impact on blood sugar, because the beans and meat slow it down & reduce to a safe level.
Thank you for the comment and suggestion, just to inform you, this channel is focused on meat free and healthy options, so we do not included anything that is with meat according to the Indian Traditions. You can definitely try it in your own kitchen. Thank you and please continue your support towards us.
Even, if you add protein like eggs to your rice, it will slow down the sugar spike. Just ensure that any time you are eating rice, you eat protein along with it and eat it with moderation.
Thank you for this comment. I would like to ask you to stand by the stove while the rice is cooking and to check the grains if it is cooked or needed more time to be cooked. Please start of with 1/2 cup of rice 1st and work your progress from then. I wish you the best and if you have any questions please do not hesitate to write to me back. Thank you & Happy Trying.
Thank you so much for teaching us this recipe. I miss eating rice as a type 2 diabetic, and now I can have a portion. Blessings to you and yours always, Debbie from Eugene Oregon.
Thank you for the compliment. I enjoy sharing my knowledge with others and I am happy to see many of us are enjoying this info. Thank you for your support.
When I originally learned this method, I was also taught to not cook the rice completely, and then refrigerate it for 12 hours or overnight before using. This reduces the carb load by about a third. Even better is to use black rice, or alternatively wild rice (not actually a rice), both of which have only about 2/3rd of the carbs of regular white rice. Doing these two things reduces your card load per serving from over 50 grams to less than 20. BTW, use coconut oil, your taste buds will thank you.

Right on the refrigerating even overnight of rice...this turns the starch into RESISTANT starch and results in a prolonged release of glucose into the blood which results in a MUCH lower spike in one's blood sugar.

In New Orleans after we dump the cooked rice into the colander, it’s thoroughly rinsed with hot water. Then we rest the colander on another pot to drain the access water. We don’t place the unrinsed rice back into a pot. It remains in the colander until the meal is served.
Lay a wooden spoon directly across the top of that pan, with the lid removed, and you don't have to worry about the pan then boiling over. The water will not rise above the spoon. There is actually a scientific explanation for this action by the spoon, but I don't recall the specifics of it. I just know that it works.

Research how starch diets cure diabetes 2. Diabetes 2 is caused by too much fat in your diet blocking insulin receptors. Not by starch or sugar. There was no diabetes in Asia until they started eating animal products and oils. No diabetes in Mesoamérica eating corn. No diabetes in South America or Ireland eating potatoes. Garbage food from America is killing people for profit. Not foods people have been eating for 10,000 years.
@@mowthpeece1 I agree. My naturopathic doctor had me eating rice, certain veggies, fruits and fish. My skin cleared up and I immediately started feeling better.
Yes you can but just be cautious by not to over cook the grains. The grains must be in its shape while when you test them whether it is cooked or not, it should get mashed on your hands while you are pressing the grains.
This is how I used to cook my rice before I became diabetic type 2. I can say the method doesn’t work for me anymore. I still get the sugar spike with rice. I have since replace rice with Quinoa. Which has been perfect for my blood sugar. And I don’t wake up and pee multiple times in the night. I just read some stuff about rice in general a couple days ago. It turns out white rice has the highest Glycemic Index 73, followed by brown rice 68 and then Basmati brown rice (50). So if you cook Brown Basmatic rice this way to reduce the starch further and then only eat a quarter serving then you should be ok. For diabetics, SOME carbs are allowed and necessary. But even then eat rice if you must. Better to try Quinoa or Shitaki noodles or Shitaki rice (i have yet to try Shitaki) and see what works best. For me, i just need a change from low carb pita bread so i will be trying Quinoa and Shitaki.

Nicely presented. This is the traditional way of cooking rice in India, especially in the southern parts. Instead of a metal colander generally hand woven cane baskets are used to drain the cooked rice to remove starch. Oil is not necessarily added. Though you seem to have forgotten to tell why oil is used ...or did I miss it? ....I understand that it is added to keep the rice grains separate and not mashed up. Not sure. Often we add a little salt to the rice while cooking, presumably to make it tasty. Thank you for posting this.

We also run cold water into the rice after draining the boiled water, then strain it well before putting the rice back on the stove with very low heat to dry the rice well .... Enjoy!!
Thank you for some tips that you have shared. Please continue your support to this channel.
Thanks.
Thank you so much for these kind sincere words that comes from the bottom of your heart. I cherish these words a lot. This is a platform to share knowledge and educate each other. Truly this is a positive platform for all of us

Should oil be added after draining the cooked rice?

Thank you for this information!
Even, if you add protein like eggs to your rice, it will slow down the sugar spike. Just ensure that any time you are eating rice, you eat protein along with it and eat it with moderation.
By adding plenty of veggies is also a good option for lowering glycemic index.
Best is also to start with protein and vegetable and ending with the carb (rice, in this case)
I’ll try it
Thank you for this comment. I would like to ask you to stand by the stove while the rice is cooking and to check the grains if it is cooked or needed more time to be cooked.

Google states the exercise is has a positive effect on lowering blood sugar, especially if you lose weight. The man I met lost 80 pounds from walking 10 km. A day and every morning drinking sparkling water with Acv.
@UCSmO7t-GdJFk05kMiwly0eg Do you seriously think its that easy? You’re ignorant. I am Type II diabetic, very fit and not overweight (5’ 9” and 160 lbs). I lift weights 4x per week for 1 hr minimum, ride bicycle, swim, do a lot of outdoor activity, etc. If I have even a 1 cup portion of white rice for dinner my blood sugar spikes to above 180 (sometimes over 200) when I check it 2 hrs after eating. Instead of that while cooking in any vessal take out the white thing that comes on top which is starch. Why cold water? I would rather rinse with hot. Cold would congeal the starch, not get rid of it.
In New Orleans after we dump the cooked rice into the colander, it’s thoroughly rinsed with hot water. Then we rest the colander on another pot to drain the access water. We don’t place the unrinsed rice back into a pot. It remains in the colander until the meal is served.
That's a good info
Yes the water drains out completely. It takes a few minutes but it’s worth it.
Lay a wooden spoon directly across the top of that pan, with the lid removed, and you don't have to worry about the pan then boiling over. The water will not rise above the spoon. There is actually a scientific explanation for this action by the spoon, but I don't recall the specifics of it. I just know that it works.
Yes I am aware of that method too, I do at times but most of the times I do not.

Can you do brown rice this way?
Yes you can but just be cautious by not to over cook the grains. The grains must be in its shape while when you test them whether it is cooked or not, it should get mashed on your hands while you are pressing the grains.
This is how I used to cook my rice before I became diabetic type 2.
I can say the method doesn’t work for me anymore. I still get the sugar spike with rice.
I have since replace rice with Quinoa. Which has been perfect for my blood sugar.
And I don’t wake up and pee multiple times in the night.
Also, I recommend that diabetics should check their blood sugar 4 hours after meals, at least 2x daily so you know what effect you food consumption has had.
I went to the dark side and am now hooked on cauliflower rice. Tastes the same after a while.

Since you have found a solution for your blood sugar level, I strongly encourage to remain as how you are presently. This method may not be suitable for everyone but it is a healthier option to be considered.

What was the purpose of the oil?
The purpose of using oil is to prevent the rice grains from sticking together when it cools off.
Thank you for the great comment which you have shared. I will do my research on this to obtain more information.

Not sure.

Thank you for the comment. I have seen some of them do it this method as you have mentioned. I would give myself a try in my next. Thank you for the suggestion and please continue your support to us.
How did you know that the rice you cook is a diabetec frendly ..and yet you could no longer test the rice into your blood sugar how?
Thank you very much for this information but you didn't state why you add the oil.
Oil is added to prevent the rice grains from sticking to each other when the rice gets cooled.
Thank you for the comment. Please share this video channel with others. Happy New Year to you.
@@FridayFriendlyKitchen thank you my friend ,same to you and your family
What kind of oil you used?
Regular cooking oil that you use at home.
Use coconut milk with garlic
@@minetwebb1742 Thanks for the tip and for your support.
All vegetable and seed oil is very bad. Has too much omega-6 which rises inflammation. Especially bad for diabetic people
@@waynejohn5706 I see, if that is the case, would you mind suggesting some best oil that is suitable for diabetic?

Any idea how many carbs in 1 cup, are after using this process?
Thank you for the comment and asking me, unfortunately I am not sure sure about how much carbs it contains for every cup of rice. I encourage you to do a research on the internet to see the average carbs you can get from every cup of rice.

great video. Helps a lot

*squeez rice* too had been prescribed in ancient ayurvedic texts?
Possible! I have not did any research on that
Didn't mention the reason to add oil though u told u r going to tell
The reason why oil is added because this is to prevent the cooked grains to get stucked together when it becomes cold.
Thanks for your support. ❤❤❤
You didn't mention why the oil was used. What is the reason? Plus is it Basmati rice?
Hello Michael, I must admit that I forget to mention that but the main reason why I added oil is because to prevent the cooked grains sticking together when they get cooled to room temperature.

No white rice is suitable as it is high gi. I converted to soba noodles and slowly ease out of the accustomed full stomach feeling of a meal. You do not need that much food, get use to fasting. Be impoverished as all poor starving ppl have zero diabetic issues.
I think you are right, fasting or eating less can reverse a diabetes.
"No white rice is suitable as it is high gi."
White rice is not proven to cause abnormal blood sugar spikes. Have you ever experienced an abnormal blood sugar reading after eating white rice?
@@solitaryrefinement6787 Been eating rice 30+ years first 15 was noproblems, then hit 18 prediabetic. And i don't even indulge in candy, sugary, bread foods all my life. That's why i blame the culprit to rice. You can get away with less glucose with refrigerating rice / converting it to resistant starch.
@@wric01 Yeah, but that's never been "proven".
Pure soba noodles are good diabetes because it is made of buckwheat. However, normally wheat flour is added to buckwheat flour for economic reasons. Buckwheat flour is apparently expensive.
I think you should shut off water when not using. Please don’t waste it thanks!. 🙏

Uhhh…there is enough water on the planet. Water down the drain does not simply dissapear, it goes back to the water supply. Stop catastrophising.
Is it correct wasting so much water to wash rice
Can collect.in vessel
To re use

Don't worry about the wastage of water. It does not goes on the drain but for a good use in my place. Thank you for the concern & I am aware of it.
Thank you for your support Brother. Cheers!!!
I am trying to get convince my brother to try this method. Is there any noticeable difference in the flavor of this reduced starch rice method versus cooking as regular?
Thank you for the question Mr. Craig.
My highlight is straining the starch in a fine size colander as you can see in the video. Share with him this part and let him be convinced.
As I mentioned to everyone, this is an ancient method and not using a rice cooker as how we can obtain in these present days.
@@kimagangobrit4480 not on most packets as I have noticed yet the info given on the packet may not be accurate. It's on us on trying it out and verify it through our own experience.

How does it become diabetic food
Please explain????
Most of us cooking rice in an electrical appliances these days since it was introduced few decade of years ago. I still recall and remember the older generations when they cooked rice, they use this ancient method by draining the starch. With this method been used, many of them who were living in this time were few in number to be diagnosed with diabetes.
In my family, there are few members are diagnosed with diabetes and we have been using this method from those days and the results are truly positive in controlling diabetes presently. Though I am not one, but I prefer this method as when I eat rice, I feel the rice is light instead of feeling heavy.
In all, if one who are diagnosed with diabetes, they should consult their medical experts for health advise if this method is suitable for their health or not.

You are welcome My dear friend
Good tips
I didn’t know , u can use the water u wash ur rice for ur plants 🪴, that’s great tnx 👏
Actually, it is a waste of water to not use if for something purposeful and let it all just go down the drain. Water is an often overlooked precious commodity until you live through a drought or don't have any. Then it takes on a whole new meaning as to just how precious it really is.
James Huey have u read the book ‘ the healing power of water ‘ by Masaru Emoto, pls do if u haven’t yet done so . U wud for sure find it informative .
Yes you can. When I was a kid, when my mother cleans the fish, where the water is filled with some fish blood are used for the plants to on which I still recall. There are many ways on all these.
Thank you for your support and comment.
I drain my rice 3 times. Is that also good?
Thank you!
I usually don't count how many times I rinse the rice. But I make sure the dusty water becomes clear before I place my pot on the stove.

@@FridayFriendlyKitchen Thank you for your answer, but I meant why we need to use oil in this recipe? Thanks
What about vitamin B while washing more times of rice and drain, plz clarify my doubt tq.
I am not 100% sure about washing away the Vitamin B as you have mentioned above but if they find that the Vitamin is washed away, they could always seek for medical advice before consuming supliments.
