My only issue with the ports is that various HUD/UI elements are stretched to more fill out the widescreen screen space, a negative holdover from the Wii ports that sadly wasn’t rectified.

I don't think it's so simple. At 9:12 you can see game running on PC emulator and UI stretch looks different than the Switch version. Actually, UI bubbles in Switch version look the most correct. In GC version they are vertically stretched and on PC emulator they are horizontally stretched. In other words, looks like UI for Switch received some special care and it's not just simple 4:3 to 16:9 stretching.

Yeah some fan projects mess too much with the original vision and colour temperature. The biggest issue with these ports is that they ruined the motion controls for the sake of matching them with the equally worse motion controls of Pikmin 4.
You can't aim your cursor independent of the character movement direction and you can aim it at all times meaning you have to hold 'A' and avoid moving if you don't want it to go off in the wrong direction.

Nintendo has made a proprietary emulator (this means that they consider this a worthwhile investment that they spent the time making a reuseable software "machine" for these games).
I do find it fascinating that they chose to separate the graphics into emulation (which apparently the shader tech on Gamecube is remarkably complex according to many sources on this site so I imagine it was best to make an emulator than try to make all that work natively with new code) and the CPU processes to be native, I have never heard of that before. Pretty cool stuff. This insinuates that they are eying their Gamecube and Wii libraries. I imagine if a games like Pikmin 1 and 2 sell well, we can expect a lot more of these gamecube games and possibly even Wii (due to their chipset similarity). I am for it.

In ye olden days of the GameCube and Wii era, it was just one Nintendo of America Software Technology employee who invented a N64 emulator for the GameCube in his spare time that gave us some awesome ports of N64 games on that system and its successor, particularly The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Master Quest, The Legend of Zelda Collector's Edition, and all of the N64 games available on the Wii's Virtual Console.
When that employee left Nintendo just before the start of the WiiU era, they found themselves in a pickle, realizing that they hadn't bothered to think ahead to having a dedicated N64 or beyond emulation support team and infrastructure. That's one of the reasons why the WiiU had issues with emulation, they had to port over or build from the ground up a N64-emulator engine and build a team with continuity who could support it.

Salaries haven't increased at the same rate, and entertainment prices are purely dependent on what the common people can afford. On the opposite side, house prices have increased way beyond inflation.
Furthermore, according to inflation, the $60 Super Mario Bros. would be worth about $170 today, but even Nintendo has never sold it for that high. Older pieces of entertainment generally become cheaper over time, especially if no improvements are made - this has been an unspoken rule in not only gaming, but movies and music too. Just look at steam sales.
If Wii games were worth 20€ on Wii U, then they'd be worth 15€ at most on Switch. 20€ would still be alright because I think the Wii prices on Wii U were pretty good, but 25€ (more than before!) is pushing it.

This basic treatment would be really appreciated for all of Nintendo's other GC titles. HD resolution, true 16:9 aspect ratio, anisotropic filtering, and a clearer UI are enough upgrades for the Switch. In a way, it kind of is a remaster. Not all remasters need HD textures. The HD-ness automatically makes the textures look improved, especially at long distances. Nintendo has done a lot of sh**, but I'm proud of them for doing this. A "barebones" upgrade for, say, F-Zero GX would look fantastic on Switch. I've already seen it in Dolphin. IT HOLDS UP

    • @3dmarth
      @3dmarth Год назад

Yeah, F-Zero GX already looks fantastic in 1080p, as it already has crisp textures, 60fps, and widescreen.
(I guess it could use some tweaks around draw distance and background details, but that's pretty minor.)
Games like Mario Kart: Double Dash, Smash Bros. Melee, and Eternal Darkness arguably don't hold up quite as well, but they also run very smoothly already.
But when Pikmin, a game with a low framerate and fairly blurry textures, gets this absolutely bare minimum treatment, it's harder to look favourably on that.

They even mention that if this upscaler had tensor cores then there would almost 0 latency. It's an interesting read about how they did it. I recommend it, I wouldn't call this bare bones, someone had to make the emulator work with the game, someone had to design the upscaler. There was effort put into this game to modernize it, but not spend the whole budget on a complete remake.

The production costs of this package are probably incredibly low.

They should have just remade them honestly so they could also get the game logic to 60 fps, instead of using the old fixed codebase/emulating it.
Since they're working on Pikmin 4 already it's such a no-brainer. It's not like the games are that different from each other or that big either, also they are made of fairly simple AI and scripting, for nowadays standards anyway.
They could have probably remastered first two if not all three games, with minimal title-specific work from the assets and engine they are already working on for the new game.
Though it's true that I still love the original games and a Switch version already fullfills the purpose of making them more convenient to play again, they are basically like walking through dioramas, so in a perfect world it would've been nice for Nintendo to just remake them with the graphical detail modern render techniques can offer even on limited hw, Luigi's Mansion 3 being the best comparison that comes to mind in that regard since it's also small hand-crafted spaces with a fair amount of detail poured into them.
