    So glad to see this. I feel like there's not enough RUclips coverage for this. I have mine running bare metal on my Raspberry Pi. It's been challenging for myself since I knew nothing about Linux, networking, reverse proxy, and just the basics of Jellyfin like organizing metadata. Took me a good four months to get this up and running the way I wanted, especially since remote access was important for me. There's a lot of info floating around, mostly written by people who has been doing IT for a while. That's why I'm proud of my server, because it was exhausting lol

      @@Yuriel1981 thanks! I noticed the reddit community is more now towards newcomers. This kinda annoyed me at first like I missed out or something lol I know it's dumb, but overall I'm happy to see the lack of gatekeeping these days. There are always more ways to improve your Jellyfin server, whether it's through security, design, or convenience. I'm just now learning to use it by way of a docker-compose installation.

    I just built my home media server a couple weeks ago and was struggling to make this all work. However, today, after many repeated attempts and such, somehow Jellyfin finally started seeing my movie files and added them to the library (everything else was working great except Jellyfin would not see my files and directories). Thanks for a great tutorial and I finally learned something about Linux/Ubuntu in the process.

      @@f4_b1 Same here. And it's annoying AF cause the most answers online are of the "SuperUser" type - "It's just simple UNIX permission management". Then I do it. And check the permissions a dozen times and all seems to be good yet Jellyfin doesn't see my directories. And then ppl wonder why Linux is not as popular. Maybe it's because the community is not welcoming to newcomers and acts from a "high horse" position more often than necessary.

    i very much so admire both open source and Libre respecting software (Freedom) and frankly the fact that Jellyfin takes a Plugin approach is indicative of respect for end user freedom. See I like Minimalist code and Both EMBY and PLEX it seems support a lot more by default than I might actually need them to so thanks.

    Good video. Jellyfin looks like a great alternative to Plex. I already got a lifetime Plex pass a few years ago and I've been super happy with it. But if I hadn't done that I'd probably be switching to Jellyfin.

    • @Quettesh
      @Quettesh 2 года назад +2

      Don't bother, if you already have lifetime Plex pass, there are only minor things that Jellyfin does better. All major features Plex does better - for example about 20% of my media library was incorrectly identified, library scan took many times longer and the codes support is just worse. The only better thing in Jellyfin I can think off is better manual metadata editor, but the point of a media server is that it should handle it correctly in the first place automatically.

      I feel Jellyfin has many missing things and miss handled stuff like handling resolutions and bitrates. It’s done client sided and not by the file or server capabilities. People have had issues when using a high bitrate video and if couldn’t use the highest bitrate on a Ethernet connected device so it should of been 1:1 almost. I also feel codec support is important.

    I know this is a while back now, but I think it's worth pointing out.
    I don't use Jellyfin, but I use Emby. I also struggled mightily with getting metadata for TV shows to work properly. Anime is even worse, just a heads up. This doesn't really apply to movies because it has less work to do (Emby, and perhaps Jellyfin, don't have to do nearly as much work to figure out movies, as they're only considering one file). Once I sorted out the process (which, honestly, is just making sure directory structure looks good), adding new shows was trivial, and getting metadata for it became a breeze.
    My experience taught me one thing: folder structure is god.
    First things first, avoid going too deep with folder structure. Flatten it as much as possible. A couple of methods accomplish this, and imho, one of them is the standout.
    - You can just all episodes in to one folder.
    - You can put all seasons in to their own folders without any root folder.
    - You take that step, but also contain them within a folder for the name of the show.
    Let's say you're trying to sort out The Simpsons.
    Ideally, your folder layout should look like "\The Simpsons\Season xx\"
    Within, episodes can be named a few ways. The one mention in the video (just calling them SxxExx) is fine, but it's crap if you find yourself needing to work on the files outside of the server software. My personal preference for renaming (when I have to) is the default FileBot format (it's paid software, and I'm not shilling for them, but it's exceptionally good at getting metadata and renaming files correctly). The format looks like "Show Name - SSxEE - Episode Title.ext". It's still a flat name, and easy enough for your server to parse, but verbose enough that you can look at know exactly what it is.
    If each episode is in it's own folder ("\The Simpsons\Season xx\Episode 1\file.ext"), that's also fine.
    Long story short, the server scanners are good, but it's in your best interest to make it's job as easy as possible. Rename and pay a bit of attention to folder structure and EVERYTHING goes far smoother.

    @TechHut : Ran into another snag when setting up libraries...i created a few different folders, Movies, shows, anime movies and anime series. In the file manager under casaos it shows files and folders under each..but under jellyfin it lumps all the folders I made into Movies. So everything of the 4 folder and corresponding subfolders, jellyfin merged them all into Movies. Makes it really confusing. If I am unable to sort it all out..might just use Jellyfin for movie playback and a normal media player like VLC to playback of tv shows or anime series 😮‍💨

    I'm currently running jellyfin, and I realised that if I create a Playlist, the user can't access the Playlist unless they are granted all access to libraries
    Do you have any fixes for that?

  • @27565
    @27565 Год назад +2

    Good video but you might want to make another one talking a bit more about adding libraries because that part at the top that says "For Linux on Arch Linux, CentOS, Debian, Fedora, openSUSE, or Ubuntu, you must grant the service user at least read access to your storage locations." this seems to also effect Linux Mint as well which is what I'm using it on. I have yet to figure out how to give the service user the permissions and there doesn't seem to be any guides on how that works even on Jellyfins website.

    Thought I found a solution to my issue that has been naggin on me all weekend, now into monday. It all started early
    Saturday morning when I thought this is the day that I will up grade my Linux Mint Cinnamon 19.3 to 21.1. I Moved over from Windows 3 years ago and loved Linux Mint, but now that it has reached the end of it's life I thought I would upgrade this weekend. All went great till I tried to get my Plex running, I got it installed OK but Plex sees the drives but not the files on them. I have about 17 internal SSD drives mostly 1TB. mounted on a few USB 3.1 with about 10 ports each, that are daisy chained into a 4 port USB 3.1. This is how I have had my library set up for Plex and it ran wonderfully..... untill the upgrade. I tried modifying the fstab file as you show in 21:00. I only tried one drive to see how things would work, but after I save the file and come out and run the sudo mount -a command, I get the following message
    "Mount is denied because the NTFS volume is already exclusively opened.
    The volume may be already mounted, or another software may use it which
    could be identified for example by the help of the 'fuser' command."
    I am new to Linux as I have mentioned and haven't a clue whats going to or what to do.... Here is a list of what I get when I run the sudo blkid command:

Any who, after doing many searches I came across Jellyfin and that other one. I got a deal on a lifetime Plex Pass a year ago and so I went with it. For po' folks who don't have a separate physical machine for the server there is another hurdle to deal with. I don't fully understand the problem but some programs don't like trying to access a server at the same IP address as the client. So you have to go into the terminal and create a "loopback exemption" before you can watch anything. This may be specific to Windows, I don't know. All I know is that none of the supported browsers or the "official" Jellyfin player would play my content until I found the code to fix it. And I don't know if it's a permanent fix or something that I'll have to do periodically until I get a dedicated server built. Jellyfin has a video on their channel explaining how to do it.

    @TechHut - Great video. Going through step by step and everything is working. I have one point of confusion (so far). Is the Backup Folder on your personal machine and the place JF will pull from is the one that is in your folder in the home directory running the JF server? So 2 machines (1 backup and other copy of shows/movies)? Is that for data retention in case 1 machine goes down? I first thought they were both on the same machine and was trying to figure out why 2 copes and why you would use FileZilla instead of just a copy command. Just wanted to verify. BTW> Like you videos. Best part I like is when you go command by command and explain things and the pace is good. Have a great day and thanks for your help and work.

    So how do you actually access the server from an outside network?

    • @leadpoisoning_
      @leadpoisoning_ 2 года назад +1

      You have to SSH into the server. An example: if you create an AWS server and start an EC2 instance and use ubuntu 20.04 LTS you will have an ubuntu server hosted on AWS. At the end of the EC2 creation process there will be an option to create a .pem file that will hold a key that will allow you to SSH into the server. Once you are done creating the server open command prompt or terminal and type: ssh -i [FILE_NAME_HERE].pem ubuntu@[PUBLIC_IPV4_ADDRESS_HERE] from there you should be connected to the server and you will be able to execute commands within your server

    I specifically wanted to know how to add Nas files, it doesn't seem to want to work with however I specify it. I know the files are there and readable, as if I add the location to my Debuntu desktop, I can click on it, and see the folders, click on a particular file, and it starts playing with the media player, but Jellyfin says the directory doesn't exist. Sigh...

      @SuperHaunts : I'm having a similar issue. I have Jellyfin on CasaOS ontop of Debian 12 server. I can't seem to get Jellyfin to find the media directories I have made. I can see the folder via a normal file manager like Nemo or Thunar under Linux Mint 21.3, Cinnamon and Xfce DE respectively. I can play video files back via the file manager method with VLC or Celluloid..but Jellyfin not yet.

    I wrote a script to do automatically name the files to jellyfins preferred format, given the files are already in order with their previous naming scheme
    import os
    # Set the directory where the show files are located
    directory = '\path\to\directory\'
    # Find all the show files in the directory
    files = os.listdir(directory)
    # Set the initial season and episode numbers
    season = 1
    episode = 1
    # Set the counter to 0
    #More on the relevance of this below
    count = 0
    # Iterate through the list of show files
    for file in files:
    # Split the file name and extension
    name, ext = os.path.splitext(file)
    # Construct the new file name
    new_name = f"S{season:02d}E{episode:02d}{ext}"
    # Rename the file with the new name
    os.rename(os.path.join(directory, file), os.path.join(directory, new_name))
    # Increment the counter
    count += 1
    # If the counter is greater than or equal to 2, reset it to 0 and increment the episode number.
    # If your directory contains subtitle files set the if count to 2. 1 is for if it's just the show files
    if count >= 1:
    count = 0
    episode += 1
    # If the episode number is greater than the number of episodes in the season, reset it to 1 and increment the season number
    if episode > 99: # Adjust this value to the number of episodes in a season
    episode = 1
    season += 1

    Thanks for the video
    There is one thing bothering me in each and every video i have watched so far:
    everybody says that one should NEVER run jellyfin, syncthing, etc... with a root user. BUT: no one really explains how one creates a non-root user with aministrative privileges for these programs, add that user to the programs group and then set the permissions right. i have watched tons of videos and couldn't find a single one that did that. either those people use theses programs unsecurely or they are not aware of this fact
    cheers

      @@marcc5768 Ok, I'm still totally illiterate about it. But I don't have casaos anymore but I've tried it on a proxmox server (should be debian based too). The way i found to do it was installing nfs packages on jellyfin server (or the proxmox host, couldn't remember), enable NFS o the synology NAS, giving read/write permissions to the proxmox host and the jellyfin container in the settings tab ot the shared folder i wanted it to see ("media", "video", or anything you want to share) then mount the NFS on the host (if i remember correctly, or the container, or both). Then I was able to see the folder and populate libraries. Now it works like a charm.
      I hope it could be of help and I'm sorry if it was not a clear explanation, I really am a dum dum. That is the best I can do
