Great video Dave, got to say the filtering on the premium did seem to make a difference with the PLT although it didn't totally filter it all out. Looking forward to the next one
The new one sounds better on Receive to me Dave much easier to listen to. " great videos as usual your reviews are superb mate. I take more notice of your reviews than some of the others Ive seen as I know your experience in radio shine through.
Dave, they both seem to have best of both worlds really. I guess it depends on what you prefer to listen to. The old has more crackle but the new sounds like it has a handkerchief over the speaker. Both audible at sensible levels. Great vids as usual Dave, thank you posting and 73's.
Thanks for the video. It certainly sounds better on receive on than the original version. The one I used to have a while back used to be a pain for picking up any sort of interference. It would be nice to see what the receive is like compared to the receive on an original Lincoln.
I did buy the premium version 2 years ago, love it in the mobile Dave and use it on the Clyde valley Friday night net and doing 18w output on ssb I don't need a heater as it does me fine. Looking forward to buying the new McKinley soon too. 108CV1642
The premium seems to be dragging in a clearer signal but there's not a great deal in it. both prob sound better with the filters on. A great video dave.
Hate to say it but I think the old one sounds better. The contact at 4:58 proves the point just fantastically and that's nothing to do with the clarifier. The received speech is a lot clearer and has more articulation to it. The newer one sounds more muddy in comparison. Yes the older one is harsher to listen to but you'd be able to understand audio in borderline contacts a lot easier. That's one of the penalties of having a narrow filter as the new one has. For FM it would be interesting to see what the deviation is. The difference in power of 1 watt is going to make the sum total of sod all difference to making a contact but a low FM deviation is when its borderline contacts.
Great comparison video Dave. Did they both have the LOCAL/DX function in the same position? The premium was pulling in more noise but it was all relative to signal strength. I wonder how the signals would look with the premium set to Local and the standard Grant set on DX?
Dave im home from work and plugged my headphones in and the older Grant is hearing things the Premium isnt picking up...The premiums filtering is too much at lower signals.
Dave what a shame you suffer from PLT spoils a great band....Dare i be different. To me the old Grant seems to pick out voices much better the new one sounds choked with filtering and is sometimes illegible.. its funny we hear things differently. Thanks for comparisons
plt is the curse of ham radio...there ae radios out there that cost ten time the value of the grant and they cant take plt out...some people get it bad some dont..some not at all..its just luck.
Great video Dave!

+andymuza They were both set to DX with no filters, just the way you would normally have them Mate.

is it a mosfet that's used in these new grant radios as an out put device?
I prefer the older Grant II
