Make the Classic SD Awesome-r in 3 steps (even for lovers of larger Swiss Army Knives)

  • My friends, I thank you so much for watching this video!
    DON'T use the magnetic clasp on a keychain, with a larger SAK or an irreplaceable SAK! It is not strong enough.
    Tons of thanks to ‎@gadgetgus whose ideas on the alox version and conversation about carrying it on a necklace chain helped me refine my ideas.
    • 🇨🇭 Victorinox CLASSIC ...
    I replaced my Swiss champ with a Classic SD for like a month and I was actually able to make it work for me. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy to go back to carrying a larger Swiss army knife, but this tiny Swiss army knife actually can "bring it", at least for me, when I followed these 3 steps: first I needed to make the knife most accessible. I also needed to increase its usefulness by both getting creative and refusing to baby it. If I break it, it is the very definition of replaceable.
    In the process, I got a chance to carry it on a necklace chain with a magnet clasp. Using a magnet for this was a great idea that allowed me to remove the knife from the necklace with a minimum of fuss and problems. It was pretty sturdy and stayed on under almost all circumstances. Definitely not for a collectible knife, but it is a fantastic way to optimize your tiny EDC Swiss army knife if it's gonna fall out of your pocket.
    The Classic SD is available in a lot of colors at Victorinox - Be sure you look at all the different SD listings on this page if you want to see the Victorinox originals:
    www.victorinox...
    There are a few sites such as DLT Trading that have a variety of interesting scales. As of the time, I'm writing this, they have some discontinued scales ones for $15:
    www.dlttrading...
    Knife Center has some interesting artist series dragon scales which look really pretty:
    www.knifecente...
    Of course, you can also find them at Amazon, and if you do, you will be supporting the channel by using the link below:
    www.amazon.com...
    And the best of all, this is the particular magnetic clasp that made it possible for me to carry the Classic SD on a regular basis. This magnetic necklace clasp works great because it's working at a 90° angle with the separation force not actually pulling directly on the magnet. There are some fold-over magnetic clasps I would try as well. There are probably many similar clasps by different manufacturers as well! As usual, this link to an Amazon product may support the channel a little bit. It is an affiliate link.

    These are great if you always walk slowly, never fall down, or never need to jump or sprint. Necklaces sway when walking at a decent pace or faster and this clasp will come apart immediately. I actually bought these same magnets using the link in the description of this video and I would not recommend them. The magnets are not very strong at all and are expensive at $1 each with no ring clasps provided.
    That out of the way I do like everything else in this video.

    Magnetic clasp idea: GENIUS.

    • @thevineclimber
      @thevineclimber  5 месяцев назад

      Thanks, Josh! It really works because it's also just the right weight. I'm not sure the Rambler even wouldn't be too heavy and also it would look a little weird because it's a little thick. But honestly as a pendant, the classic SD looks fine!

  • @HammerAndFlame
    @HammerAndFlame Год назад +15

    Besides the combo tool, an advantage to the Rambler is that the blade is on the opposite side from the keyring. This not only lets you use a
    lanyard or clip for extra grip, it keeps it out of the way when using the blade.

    • @thevineclimber
      @thevineclimber  Год назад +2

      Absolutely! Huge benefit period thank you for bringing that up! The Rambler is my original, and it resonates with my idea of a multitool so much better. I think the Rambler might be a reasonable choice for a necklace for many people. It's getting a bit heavy to have banging around against your chest all day in my opinion. But actually, maybe on a shorter chain...

    • @thevineclimber
      @thevineclimber  Год назад

      Awesome! Thank you! But I think there is more to it. I think that there's a feeling factor. I believe this encompasses your personal sense of style as well as what you believe. It projects about you to other people, and how much you feel you can rely on the tool. And then you multiply that number by how much you care about your feelings! Additionally, I think that there is a bonus for being replaceable if it both doesn't cost a lot and is readily available.

    I use the classic SD as a compliment to my spartan which is always in my pocket. Mostly because the spartan doesn't have scissors and most of the time I'm using the knife for things I should really be doing with scissors instead. Its so light that carrying both really isn't a significant difference in the pocket. I also always keep one in the car in case I happen to forget to put them in my pocket so I've still got one with me. At this point leaving the house without my knife is like leaving without my phone or wallet, instant panic lol.

    For a couple of months now, my primary tool is the Vic Mini Champ Alox. It looks like jewellery and is perfectly wearable as a neck tool.
    Yes, i need to carry pen, toothpick and tweezers elsewhere. But since using the Mini Champ, i don't even carry a larger SAK as urban EDC anymore .
    Some tools of the mini champ look esoteric, but once you get over yhe declared function, they are simply super versatile. And... you do have a pointed nailfile!

    I've been carrying a classic as my EDC pocket knife now since about 1995. Does 98% of what I need as a suburban/urban dweller. For convenience I made a leather pouch sheath that fits on my keyring, so when I need it, I just pull the classic out by the keyring on it. I love the classic so much, I keep spares stashed in my car, in the wife's car, and in my pack. If I go off camping or woods walking, theres a Buck sheath knife in my daypack.

      That is the very first thing that came to my mind! I carry a Huntsman, Climber, or Compact, depending on the day, with a suspension clip. I hate how the clip gets in the way when using my multitool. When I hold the suspension clip out of the way in the same hand I am holding my multitool, it creates horrible hot spots in my hand. I, too, had thought about magnets, but like you, the ones I looked at always felt like they would add too much bulk and be counterproductive.
      PS: I have also experienced those sweatpants and light shorts days where carrying a multitool in the pocket is just impossible until I started carrying the Swiss card in my pocket with my minimalist wallet. It's a game changer.

      The combination of a smaller SAK like the Classic, the Jetsetter or even a SwissCard allows you to have a bigger but yet slim SAK without scale tools (Spartan Wood or Alox Cadet) and without scissors. It is a killer combination. Double or triple carry is the way to go.

Fortunately, it is fairly easy to still get classics, and then the scales should be replaceable, so it can look like whatever you want, and these scales seem to come off more easily than the scales on the larger knives with less damage, So I think they would be pretty easy to replace onto other knives.

It seems to be extremely popular even for those outside the edc community. Sadly, my leatherman squirt is now resigned to less strong use due to it not being produced anymore and i treasure it too much haha. it is now used as a tweezer for small wiring

    If you get in the habit of folding your pockets back when you sit down, everything is less likely to fall out. You basically sit, put hand in pocket, rock hand around so it's facing out now, and the pocket will "fold" so it holds things in after you remove your hand.

    I am a huge fan of the SwissChamp and I always will be. I carried it as my EDC for years. But its size and weight make it a tad cumbersome to carry around the house, in many styles of pants and pockets. For over a year now, I’ve been instead carrying the Signature (which is a Classic SD but subbing the tweezers for a pen), attached with the little KeySmart magnet you showed to a Rovyvon A8 flashlight, clipped to my pocket with the Rovyvon’s clip, a setup I initially saw on MaxLvlEDC’s channel. I’m with you all the way, I think the Classic SD is a lot more capable than some people give it credit for, and the extremely compact nature of the tool makes it so very, very easy to carry, and not stressful to accidentally lose or push beyond its limit. Even the knife and the flashlight combined are so small and light that I can carry them in any pants and forget they’re there. I’m amazed at how rarely I need something else, and that something else usually ends up being the relatively small SwissChamp pliers (which I need because they’re small, not in spite of it). Plus the scale options, so great! Glad you see the value now too!

      I also have a sentimental attachment to the Classic SD, particularly with the black scales like the one you showed, because this is the same knife my dad owned my entire childhood, and my admiration of that knife is partly what got me into SAKs in general. My EDC Signature is of course black too.

    I have been missing your videos, the Classic & Classic SD knives are the SAK’s I have carried the most. For years I carried one on
    my keys, now I carry a alox Mini Champ on my key chain along with a small silver MecArmy flashlight. The silver alox models
    hold up to wear the best as long as you don’t need the tweezers & toothpick. The little white lights and pens are also kind of cool.

    Currently I have a Niteize S-biner on my keys and just put the Rambler there. But I have it as the closest to the opening so it's easy to deploy. That said I think it depends on how many keys a person is holding as the S-biner is for people with maybe one big car key + 4 keys max I think. You could also use the Niteize microlink as well if you don't have as much keys. What also helps are hairties, where the hair tie goes through the hole of the keyhole, then to the loop below to lock in place, then put that on a keychain as well. To clarify, I'm not saying to use the hairtie as the primary thing holding everything together but on some keys that have the hole on top.

      Hey, Gus! Please do borrow it. I actually think that it needs some updating! There are more things to consider in there. I am thinking of a whole section about feelings which I think applies to everybody - if you feel it's reliable, reflects your personal style and projects an image to others that you would like to project, you are going to like it more. A modifier for that is how much you care about your feelings!! And then there is also whether it is replaceable - the factors that go into that are cost and whether or not it's readily available.
      You know, I'm sorry that you had all those problems. But it is really good for me to hear. The bank account I started specifically for this channel got closed for no reason whatsoever on the same exact day as I got my first payment from RUclips. I was so frustrated and I had spent so much time setting it up that I almost quit the channel.

      You shall always have my support, but you probably know that already, lol 😊
      Feelings are so important to all of us, yet women are generally much better at talking about them than men.
      However, I am trying to help change that by getting men to open up & talk more, with an impromptu philosophical idea or expressing periodic good will, during or near the end of the video.
      I think using a SAK or product to reflect someone's feelings - be it reliability etc, helps start a conversation... 👏👏
      I'm sorry to hear about your bank account, you set up, then closed... so glad you didn't quit the channel, as we need more people like you in the community & the world 🌎

    Id add capability into the equation or maybe flexibility is a better word? Something that captures the width of the toolset. I think it’s fair to separate out from Usefulness. A knife, for example, can have a very high usefulness but lower capability/flexibility than a Leatherman surge or a Swiss champ. Don’t like either of those words actually but I can’t think of a good word for it.

    Hi Anne !!!
    Thanks for another great video as usual.
    Funny thing, several years ago, a company I was doing some work for gave CSDs out as Christmas gifts.
    After your video I revisited the SD !!!
    Your equation is on target, but with a small additional consideration for me. Long ago I was trying to find the cure all end all tool that covers everything & that doesn't exist for me. So in addition to accessibility & usefulness I would add purpose. My fieldmaster means the same to me as your champ means to you.
    But it's a bit bulky for EDC general purpose. So enters the Walker. If I'm in an office environment the SD is small less noticeable so purpose starts to come into view & so on. I just ordered the magnet connectors & Kathy's eyes lit up so hopefully I'll get one or two. (LOL). Currently I'm using a fishing line snap swivel.
    Anyway !!!
    I have some equipment reviews from the camping trip a water bottle, bushcraft knife & I put both the fieldmaster & Walker through their paces.
    I can forward the reviews via your email if you want. This comment is already too much.
