  • This pocket knife is insane! It's the Victorinox Classic mini Swiss Army Knife, it only weighs 21 grams and it's perfect for thru-hiking and backpacking. It's the only knife you'll need on your hike long-distance trails like the Pacific Crest Trail and the Appalachian Trail because it's so small, ultralight and multipurpose. I personally think it's the best you'll get for the money and knives with this level of quality don't come cheap.
    Get yer mitts on one: thetrailhunter...
    For beginners, it's great because it's got everything you'll need while camping even here in the UK and it's built to last with super sharp stainless steel.
    BTW, I MADE THIS INCREDIBLE BIT OF GEAR

    Cant belive you only got one before the PCT, great little knife, you missed the flathead on the nail file, supper usefull for tightening up treckingpole cams and prizing things open.. Mine goes everywhere with me and get used daily!!

    The victorinox rambler is even better because you get an extra tool with 3 functions. It's a small Philips screwdriver, bottle opener and wire stripper in one. The Philips screwdriver is very handy for tightening loose screws on spectacles or sunglasses and useful for any time you need it for the rest of your hiking gear. It is the same size as the Classic but slightly thicker and weighs a fraction more but is a lot more useful. I would never carry a Classic over the Rambler

    I'm carrying the Victorinox manager knife with me, It's basically the same plus a bottle opener and a tiny pen in it. The file is actually also a screwdriver (-), the bottle opener as well (+). Sometimes, when I want to eat more healthy on trail, I'm carrying an Opinel 6 with me to cut veggies (my favorite healthy trail food is couscous, tomatoes, cucumber, herbs and feta/vegan feta or avocado, lemon jiuce, olive oil).

    makes a great desk knife, emergency scissors, do your nails, box opener, and simple screwdriver....perfect for the desktop....but the rambler is the best urban knife, the phillips and bottle opener make it indespensible.

    Have used these for so many years now and almost always have one with me. Used to give them to people as holiday presents, a gift but also a test to see if they recognized truly useful things. Oh, and the blunt/screwdriver end of the nail file can come in handy... Not necessarily a through hike necessity (the screwdriver bit) but it is amazing how many times I have used it.

    A great pocketknife! I own at least like 2 or 3 of them. Currently I can't find it. Never thought about the color, that's a great advice!
    Since I like to eat cheese, Salami and that stuff, i also use a "Opinel Slim line No8" It weights in at 36g. So still quite handy, but really nice to cut my yummy Salami!

    Best knife out there for backpacking. The blade is short, but sharp! There are loads of other great tools out there, but they're heavier and unnecessarily complex. I have the Victorinox Classic clipped to my belt at all times.. So damn useful!

  • @pokedude104
    @pokedude104 11 месяцев назад +1

    I always recommend the alox version of the classic SD because its pretty much the lightest one they have at a whopping 17 grams. I think the aluminum scales are also very nice looking and the texture adds some more grip you don't get with the plastic ones. You lose the tweezers and toothpick but honestly I never find much use for them. If you're a bit nuts like I am I'd recommend pairing this with one of the larger 91mm models, while the small ones are great they're just not up to certain tasks I find myself doing like prying open things, cutting up heavy cardboard boxes, opening cans, making kindling for a fire, etc, etc.

    I don't disagree with anything you said but personally i do prefer one of the standard size Victorinox rather than the mini models. Mind you, not one with dozens of tools. Just one of the simpler standard size. But i'm not a through-hiker so that might make a difference.

      I also always EDC a larger Vic such as Farmer or Hiker as it's on my keychain so it's with me whenever I leave the house...but as the Classic SD weighs next to nothing at just 21g/3 quarters of an oz and takes up next to no space, I have this on me even when I don't have my keychain on me, in the coin pocket of my jeans or other pocket...so basically if I'm wearing clothes it's on me. I also EDC a multitool, and if I'm going into the outdoors I carry a fixed blade....yet despite carrying those other 2 or 3, the Classic SD is the one I use most day to day, for things like opening packaging, cutting string and much more. I only use one of my larger blades for jobs which the Classic can't handle, which are few and far between. I carry them to be prepared, but rarely need them. What I'm saying is that I totally agree with you about carrying a larger blade or 2, but the Classic SD is absolutely ideal to pair up with those, costs next to nothing and there's no reason not to have one.

  • @rixtermapes1984

    Great video, great knife. Good idea using vibrant colour, but u didn't mention Screwdriver on the end of Nail File. Because you've actually got the Classic SD model, with 2.5 Screwdriver (Which is very handy indeed)
    Also you can get the Signature model with all above features & additional Ballpoint Pen, it's more expensive, but affordable.
    I use medium Victorinox Explorer Ultra model, I swear by this and use if all the time, not just camping. Its heavier of course but suits my needs.
    Yours Rixter.

    I'm going to include the tool that is.on my keys since it does come in useful when hiking
    Leatherman Squirt ps4
    Mora bushcraft Black
    Victorniox Spartan and the classic sd round my neck.
    The fixed blade is more when I need to hack a stick for my tarp and firewood but thats kept in my ruck usaully

    • @simonh6371
      @simonh6371 4 года назад

      Well I EDC a Victorinox Farmer/Hiker, as well as a Classic SD, plus a bladed multitool (but not a Squirt, they're just too dinky for me, prefer my SOG microclip)...and if I'm in the woods or hiking I carry a fixed blade like a Mora Garberg or Linder Guide on top of those 3...but still the one which gets the most day to day use of all those is the Vic Classic SD. The Vic Farmer/Hiker is on my keychain so I always have it when I leave my house, but the Classic SD is always on me in a coin pocket or other pocket, so basically that's my true EDC as it's always with me if I'm wearing clothes.

    While I agree it's a good super light duty extra, it's not a great solo carry knife. I don't know that much about you, but I'm pretty sure you're not a knife person. The steel is 420HC which simply wouldn't hold up for long periods of time. You'd be much better with a Benchmade Bugout or Spyderco Manix lightweight or Para 3 LW, and keeping this guy as an extra in the pack. The steel on the Benchmade or the Spyderco would hold hold up to time and each are much more knife. The Benchmade is also LIGHTER and like 3Xs the blade. Better options out there.

      I totally agree. While I would happily carry this little knife, I own a few, I would also have something far more substantial with me. I have a Spyderco Manix 2 LTW which is an incredibly capable knife that weighs nothing at all.

    I EDC in the city the Classic SD together with a larger Victorinox plus a multitool which has a 5cm/2in blade...even when I just go to the supermarket to buy bread...if I go out into the woods bushcrafting/hiking even for a day I carry these 3 plus a fixed blade knife minimum...yet despite all of these blades I like to carry, guess which one actually gets used the most? Yes it's the Classic SD. I only use the smallest blade neccessary for the task at hand, and in most cases the blade on the Classic SD is sufficient. I hardly ever use the bigger blades, and only use them when the Classic SD blade isn't going to cut it. So totally agree with you, the Classic SD is brilliant and up to most tasks you need to do, unless, like you say, you're really bushwhacking. Funnily enough there's a video on yt somewhere of a guy actually trying to baton wood logs with a Classic SD...well needless to say he broke it (although you can do this with a larger SAK), but it's obvious to anyone that this knife isn't for that.
