    The is the first in a series of video's I plan to do that give an overview of certain systems used on the 16v VW engine as fitted to the Mk2 Golf GTi, Mk2 Jetta GTi, Corrado 1.8ltr and 2ltr 16v's and anything else that has this particular engine either from the factory or as a aftermarket swap out
    This episode cover's
    - Cold starting system along with its parts, how they work and the electrical side.
    - Cold running enrichment system along with its parts, how they work and the electrical side.
    Very simple design that works perfectly but can take a bit of head scratching to work out how it all works and the potential problems that can arise from it not working.
    Any comments welcome as always, if you like the video hit the thumbs up and subscribe for more technical content coming soon

    Great video. Thank you. I'd love to see a video that shows the same details with a k-jet system that uses a warm up regulator. My old Volvo's cold start injector is stuck on permanently. I'm hunting for the cause.

    • @GreyGooseRestorations
      @GreyGooseRestorations  8 месяцев назад +1

      Hi, if it's stuck open, then i guess it's either the actual cold start valve broken or you have an electrical issue causing the valve to be active.

    Good morning friend. So far I have not been able to do checks on the car. I have removed the cold start valve and it does not leak under pressure. I think the problem is in the timed temperature sensor that commands to inject fuel when the engine doesn't need it. If I disconnect the cold start valve, it starts perfectly! It may also be that the injectors lose a little gasoline but I have not verified that. After 12 hours with the car stationary with the injector connected and the car cold it starts up fine.

    So my 87 cabriolet with a 2.0 passatt 16v engine swap has a cold start issue. It will start but die immediately. I can feather it to keep it idle and eventually once warm will idle. It seems that this system you've explained has been deleted. If I add one again will it fix the cold start issue?

    Can you look at the 2.0 16v corrado A9 or 9A I can’t never remember the code. It’s like the 1.8 but it doesn’t have the screw on the metering heads etc

    • @GreyGooseRestorations
      @GreyGooseRestorations  Год назад

      Theres not a huge amount of difference between the KR/PL 1.8ltr engines and the 2ltr 9A engines, if its Kjetronic then it'll have the C0 screw on the metering head too

    Cracking video bud, using it to help diagnose a cold start issue on my corrado. I have a 1.8 kr engine. It struggles to start when cold, I mean it does start but have to crank it a few times to get it going, when warm its fine. Would this be an issue with the 5th injector?

    • @GreyGooseRestorations
      @GreyGooseRestorations  Год назад +2

      Glad its helpful, sounds like it could be the fifth injector

    great video, I was wondering if you would know what would cause my car to die after the fith injector stopps spraying fuel? This only happens when cold but starting is completely fine when up to running temps.

    • @GreyGooseRestorations
      @GreyGooseRestorations  Год назад +2

      Thanks, it could be due to the C02% being too lean potentially, are your overrun cut off valve and cold enrichment valve electrical plugs on right? The cold enrichment valve should have the plug with a white wire and a black wire

    • @mattyocalypse
      @mattyocalypse Год назад +2

      @@GreyGooseRestorations i believe the white and black wires are connected to the cold enrichment valve but I will double check tomorrow and let you know 👍

    Hi there, I have the new starter motor without the extra pin, I have been told I can connect it to the starter but with a diode. Would you know what type of diode I would use for this?

    • @GreyGooseRestorations
      @GreyGooseRestorations  Год назад

      No need for a diode, there are two large bolt terminals.
      The one that is between the solenoid and the motor body, connect the two black wires to this terminal.

    • @sama9553
      @sama9553 Год назад +1

      @@GreyGooseRestorations sorry if I wasn’t clear but the 2 black wires that go to the 5th injector had a 4th plug on the old starter. My new starter doesn’t have this 4th plug. I was told if I attached these 2 black wires to the normal spade connector on the starter it would fire the starter every time I accelerate due to the cold enrichment valve sending 12v to it.

    • @GreyGooseRestorations
      @GreyGooseRestorations  Год назад

      Yes thats correct but the easiest way is too connect those wires to the other big threaded terminal on the starter solenoid.

    • @sama9553
      @sama9553 Год назад +1

      @@GreyGooseRestorations ok thank you, would that be the terminal with the big red wire, not the black and red one.

    • @GreyGooseRestorations
      @GreyGooseRestorations  Год назад +1

      If you looks at the starter as new and not fitted to the car there are two threaded bolt terminals, one has nothing on it and the other has a cable attached that links the solenoid to the main body, put the black wire on this one 👍

    I've got a 1.8 16v corrado in the garage thats having cold start issues, i.e. when started it will not rev clearly and is bogging down, does not idle up and ticks over quite low. After a minute or 2 the idle will rise and it'll eventually take a clean rev. Fifth injector is spraying ok, ive replaced 2 of the 3 coolant sensors in the head. Throttle body off and cleaned. Any ideas?

    • @GreyGooseRestorations
      @GreyGooseRestorations  Год назад

      Hi, it could be the pressure relief valve seal in the metering head, if its letting fuel seep past that could cause hot start issues

    • @jaimeam8301
      @jaimeam8301 Год назад +1

      Thank you very much I will have it on mind. But this problem has come since I changed the starter motor solenoid. Before it was broken and it did not send 12 v to the cold start valve, so it was very difficult for it to start cold but hot without problems. I plan to try disconnecting the 5 hot injector to see if it improves. Would it make sense?@@GreyGooseRestorations

    • @GreyGooseRestorations
      @GreyGooseRestorations  Год назад

      Ok, first double check the connections are on the correct terminals at the starter as they are cold start/cold enrichment so if not connected will cause issues also

      Thanks. Checked and it's fine. Release the cold start valve and after 1 hour it started perfectly. I have the suspicion that since the valve has not worked for years, it does not spray correctly and makes it difficult to start. I'll try it again this weekend.😉

    • @jaimeam8301
      @jaimeam8301 Год назад +1

      @@GreyGooseRestorations Good morning, the connections are fine. After the car warms up, I tried to start it without the cold start injector connected and it starts perfectly. The problem is when I start it with the injector connected and after waiting more than 10 minutes. I think it's hard to start with the plugged in because it injects a lot of gasoline. When it cools down completely (after 1 day) it starts perfectly with the injector connected.
      Some clue? Thank you.
