The problem with Nick is not that he can't sing. He can. The problem here is that basically every other member of the main cast (except maybe Matt Lucas, who has an easier role and does the job well) is world-effin-class, like the absolute cream of the crop. It's like singing alongside Freddie, Pavarotti, Whitney and you are Phil Collins, or I dunno. No offense, but you get it. There are levels to this!

Nothing against Nick Jonas, I think he sang decently, but I really think they should’ve cast either Ramin Karimloo (yes, I know he was Enjolras) or Hadley Frasure as Marius and casted the other as Enjolras. I honestly don’t think it was necessary for Nick Jonas to be in the performance, not that he performed poorly, but just because he was outclassed.

Hadley Fraser should definitely have been Marius.
Incidentally Fraser was also involved with the Les Mis movie, but as the army captain. The role of Marius went to Eddie Redmayne, which, tbh, was incredibly underwhelming (as with most of the cast).
I’m officially Nick Jonas’s biggest fan and have been since 2006, but even I can admit that Marius’s character calls for stronger/bolder vocals. He’s amazingly talented and he looked amazing as Marius, but with his softer more pop-like vocals, I don’t know that this was the right role for him.

Also, he couldn't hold his note at the word "you" so there was an awkward pause before Alfie starts to sing "One day more"
Then Nick's mic is turned down again and his voice completely disappears

Wow so much unjustified hate towards Nick Jonas!? He actually seems to fit the part really well -- brave, young, innocent. It takes guts to go from produced music to broadway, I love this!

It is a big step to go from produced music to a live stage show - and it shows. I actually feel a little bad for him because he really seems to be struggling to keep up.
It takes more than guts to sing with the big boys of Broadway. Sorry.

I think a lot of people gloss over the fact that casting Nick Jonas appeals to a lot of people. By casting a household name- someone who plays the part pretty damn well, might I add- they've made the show interesting to people who typically have no interest in theater and may have turned the concert off. Having a familiar face like Nick Jonas makes people more comfortable watching something new like this. They don't feel out of place watching it.
ye one of the most famous musicals in history was in real need of a bog standard Jonas shot to revive its popularity (he is cute and he did try, but cmon)
I agree. He brought in a much younger demographic that wasn’t even born when Les Mis was at its height of popularity.

P.S. because this clip is from the concert, and not the dvd, the sound hasn't been tinkered with. When Alfie cuts loose at 2:29 his voice just soars above everything. Above the cast, the chorus, even the orchestra. Unbelievable.

Nick Jonas's portrayal of Marius isn't something I dislike, but it feels like he's somewhat overshadowed by the rest of the cast. Contrasting Nick's rendition in the 25th-anniversary concert with Michael Ball's performance in the 10th, the difference is striking. Nick maintains a consistent emotional tone throughout the concert, whereas Michael Ball injected various hues of emotions into his portrayal, making it more vibrant and engaging.

As much as I love a lot of the actors and actresses here, this does not hold a candle to the 10th anniversary.
Poor karaoke singer Nick. He's the only one during this entire performance that looks like he is taking a big shit while he's singing. And he probably is
I'm sorry, but what? I almost couldn't watch this... I can't believe that someone thought it was a good idea to cast Nick Jonas for such an important role and then a bunch of other people in the casting process agreed to it... There is absolutely no balance between him and the other singers.
It was sad to see Ramin Karimloo singing so powerfully and holding notes for so long and Nick Jonas just couldn't keep up... Watching the 10th anniversary with Michael Ball and Michael Maguire felt so much better, so much more balanced... or Ramin Karimloo and Michael Ball at this very day when they sang One Day More with the original cast... Again: so much better... (And the crowd went absolutely wild when Michael started singing - more than they did for any other performer, and the Legend Colm Wilkinson was there. I wonder if part of it was because they were finally hearing what Marius was supposed to sound like).
Nick simply ruined this show for me. I'll have to stick with the 10th anniversary (which is sad because other than him all the singers were great).

2:46 big oof. Nobody mentioning how the orchestra comes in about a 32nd beat before the cast does. Seems really minor but even someone who doesn’t “do” music would be able to notice that slight disconnect. Really unfortunate

the first bit was rough but overall he did a pretty good job and has a very nice voice, just not a musical theatre singer. like these people have been professionally training for decades to get where they are.
