    Magic and Bird both came into the league in 1979. Bird was drafted by the Celtics in 78 but stayed in college for his senior season. Magic left college early after beating Bird and his team in the NCAA championship.

    After the scene where Kareem got hurt in the 1980 Finals against the 76er's, you should realize that when Magic volunteered to play center, he played the guard and forward positions as well, and scored 42 points, 15 rebounds and 7 assists. Moreover, this was his rookie year.

    The one thing that Bird had that Magic didn't have was the ability to hit the 3 point shot consistently. Bird was drafted in 1978 but returned to Indiana State to play his senior year and didn't join the Celtics until the 1979 season, which was the same year that Magic was drafted, so they were drafted in different years but entered the NBA in the same year. The Magic/Celtics rivalry in the 1980's was probably the greatest NBA rivalry ever. Congrats on 1k subs.Oh yeah, if you want to do a different kind of reaction, could you react to the a capella group Home Free. They are 4 killer vocalist and a beat boxer who provides ALL of the instrumentation sounds, Man Of Constant Sorrow really highlights all of their talents. 👍✌️

      Well given that, I’d say magic was the better finisher at the rim. Magic was always more of a slasher. Which is what made there transition offense so deadly because you didn’t know if he’d attack or pass and he was lethal either way.

    • @jeffreyintn
      @jeffreyintn Год назад +2

      It's kind of a toss-up, really. Bird was the same way, in that if you double-teamed him, he'd drop a dime. If you didn't, he'd shoot lights out. He couldn't drive like Magic, for sure, but he could eat you up in the post. When someone asks which one was better, the way I get out of it is to just say, "They played different positions". 🙂

    • @FUBAR1986
      @FUBAR1986 Год назад +1

      @@jeffreyintn that’s correct Jeff they played different positions and their roles were different because of those positions…. If you ask me, Jordan, bird, magic was the reason basketball became internationally known….. I started watching in the mid-60s

    He came into the league and instantly started kicking ass.

    Make no mistake about it, It was Magic and Bird and their rivalry with their respective teams (Lakers and Celtics) in the 1980s, that saved the NBA and made it what it is today!
    I was fortunate enough to witness it!
    For example, that 80-something foot shot magic made with time running out in the first half was against the Nuggets in the first game of the opening round of the playoffs.....the lakers were already beating the crap out of them, and then that happened.....the Forum crowd went ballistic!
    A friend and I were watching it in the packed bar of a pizza joint, sharing a pitcher of beer...it was glorious! ☺

    Magic's shot was more of a set shot than a jump shot. The ones they showed in this video weren't really indicative of his normal shot, since most of them were buzzer-beater types where he didn't have time to square up. Back then, the game was more about getting closer to the basket, not further away from it, so guys his size (except Bird) didn't really have refined jumpers like they do today. Plus, being a 6'9" guard meant that he was likely guarded by a smaller player, so a set shot worked since he was less likely to be blocked so he didn't need a quick release.

  • @jrepka01
    @jrepka01 7 месяцев назад

    In many ways they were the same player: both tall and gangly, neither could jump well. Magic was great on the run, Bird had perfect form and a deadly jump shot, but mostly they were both completely unselfish and devoted to winning. They both had almost supernatural court sense and brilliant instincts. They were perfect rivals and they both were surrounded by incredibly talented teammates who became superstars because of these two.
    They became great off-court friends while shooting a Converse commercial at Bird's home in Indiana in '86, but their friendship was always in a lock-box when they were on the court.
    Highlight reels are fun to watch and all, but in the end it's about the scoreboard: They played against each other for the NBA trophy 3 times, with Bird winning the first and Magic the next two. In the 80's the Lakers won 5/10 rings to the Celtics' 3.
    Jordan's Bulls were a great and worthy team, but despite Michael's success and fame, he never had a rival in the league during his prime that was like Bird/Magic. And I've always felt that the game suffered because of this -- All of the young players coming after wanted to "be like Mike," and now the league is full of great shooters, but no one plays the game like Larry or Magic anymore. and that's our loss...

    Magic defeated Bird for the NCAA championship and they both entered the NVA for the 79-80 season. Magic won 5 rings and played in 9 finals in a career cut short by the virus. Magic's shot wasn't pretty but he was a career 85 % ft shooter and career 52% on FGs (compare that to Kobe Bryant who shot 83.7 on FTs and 44.7 on FGs). The 3 pt shot was a small part of the game back then -- most he ever took was 1.3 3s per game in 89-90 and he made 38% that year. Jordan is the goat -- but Magic and Larry are both high on the list. If pressed My 1st 5 by strict position would be Kareem-C, Magic-PG, Jordan-SG, Lebron-SF, Duncan-PF. But if I want the best starting 5, I will just put Bird in for Duncan and slide Lebron to PF -- still plenty of size, rebounding, and no need for two low post scorers.

    The Portland Trailblazers had the first pick in the 1978 draft. Larry Bird was a member of that draft class. They passed on Larry, who was drafted 6th btw, and selected Mychal Thompson. 6 years later the Trailblazers had the second pick in that years draft. They drafted Sam Bowie. Sam only played 63 out of a possible 328 games in 4 years in Portland. He broke his legs 3 times while in Portland. The player drafted right after Sam at number 3? Micheal Jordan. Portland could have, should have had both Larry Bird and Micheal Jordan on their team at the same time. Insert your best Homer Simpson DOH here.. Then again had they drafted Bird chances are they wouldn't have had the 2nd pick in 1984 but we will never know..

      This compilation really captures Magic leading the Showtime Lakers on the fast break. They ran the break relentlessly - watching it in person must’ve been so much fun, with those passes and ball movement.
      I bet you’ll need to rewind a number of times just to try to catch where the pass went, bc often, it wound up going to a different person than you expected. You could make a game out of trying to guess. Playing with him must’ve also been fun.
