Magic and Bird both came into the league in 1979. Bird was drafted by the Celtics in 78 but stayed in college for his senior season. Magic left college early after beating Bird and his team in the NCAA championship.
Magic and Bird were both world-class passers, for sure. I've heard it said, "Magic makes easy passes look flashy, and Bird makes flashy passes look easy". The truth is, they were both incredible.
By the way- there is a 10-part "Larry Bird Highlights" series on the NBC Sports Boston RUclips channel. Check 'em out!
Yep, their meeting in college were the wings of destiny. It laid each in their nests of the NBA and the rest was magic !
😉🤙😎
ps:
saw the Larry Legend highlights. Mahalo
@@jeffreyintn thank you I will check that out
After the scene where Kareem got hurt in the 1980 Finals against the 76er's, you should realize that when Magic volunteered to play center, he played the guard and forward positions as well, and scored 42 points, 15 rebounds and 7 assists. Moreover, this was his rookie year.
This was awesome! I highly recommend you watch the dream team documentary. Or at least the short version by Joe Vincent. Magic, bird, Jordan, Ewing, Pippen, Barkley, Stockton, all playing on the same team. It’s the best basketball you will ever see.
They should probably watch more players before we just jump to the dream team
The one thing that Bird had that Magic didn't have was the ability to hit the 3 point shot consistently. Bird was drafted in 1978 but returned to Indiana State to play his senior year and didn't join the Celtics until the 1979 season, which was the same year that Magic was drafted, so they were drafted in different years but entered the NBA in the same year. The Magic/Celtics rivalry in the 1980's was probably the greatest NBA rivalry ever. Congrats on 1k subs.Oh yeah, if you want to do a different kind of reaction, could you react to the a capella group Home Free. They are 4 killer vocalist and a beat boxer who provides ALL of the instrumentation sounds, Man Of Constant Sorrow really highlights all of their talents. 👍✌️
Well given that, I’d say magic was the better finisher at the rim. Magic was always more of a slasher. Which is what made there transition offense so deadly because you didn’t know if he’d attack or pass and he was lethal either way.
It's kind of a toss-up, really. Bird was the same way, in that if you double-teamed him, he'd drop a dime. If you didn't, he'd shoot lights out. He couldn't drive like Magic, for sure, but he could eat you up in the post. When someone asks which one was better, the way I get out of it is to just say, "They played different positions". 🙂
@@jeffreyintn that’s correct Jeff they played different positions and their roles were different because of those positions…. If you ask me, Jordan, bird, magic was the reason basketball became internationally known….. I started watching in the mid-60s
@@FUBAR1986 let’s not forget the superstardom and the marketability of Dr j. He’s the reason they even got the attention because he was the original marketable star that Everyone wanted to be like. He doesn’t get enough credit for how much he popularized the individual talent and how valuable a basketball player can be outside of the game.
Magic has the greatest winning % of all time by total games played... In a NBA career.
12 years. 9 finals 5 rings.
He came into the league and instantly started kicking ass.
His 1st NBA finals MVP.. Of 3....as a rookie.
He was in the finals his last year before retirement in 92.
All he did...was win
Both magic and larry entered the nba at the same time in 1979.
I agree with all the people who requested Magic and Bird A Courtship of Rivals. It's the best documentary.
Make no mistake about it, It was Magic and Bird and their rivalry with their respective teams (Lakers and Celtics) in the 1980s, that saved the NBA and made it what it is today!
I was fortunate enough to witness it!
For example, that 80-something foot shot magic made with time running out in the first half was against the Nuggets in the first game of the opening round of the playoffs.....the lakers were already beating the crap out of them, and then that happened.....the Forum crowd went ballistic!
A friend and I were watching it in the packed bar of a pizza joint, sharing a pitcher of beer...it was glorious! ☺
Its just the adrenaline rush. When you play the sports you love and you win a crucial game is one of the best feelings in the world. All great players must have that drive in order to get to the top. Screaming and getting hype isnt technically being crazy
If you haven't, watch Magic vs Bird: Courtship of Rivals.
Magic's shot was more of a set shot than a jump shot. The ones they showed in this video weren't really indicative of his normal shot, since most of them were buzzer-beater types where he didn't have time to square up. Back then, the game was more about getting closer to the basket, not further away from it, so guys his size (except Bird) didn't really have refined jumpers like they do today. Plus, being a 6'9" guard meant that he was likely guarded by a smaller player, so a set shot worked since he was less likely to be blocked so he didn't need a quick release.
There's a reason why they call him
Magic. 🏀
Can you see the parallels in the passing between Larry and Magic? It’s crazy. They are so equal.
They played against each other in the 1979 NCAA Indiana State versus Michigan State and then they both joined the NBA after that
Good vid! Here is something to think on..
Magic Johnson is the greatest winner by % in total NBA games played in Career.
The greatest winner..
In the NBA..nothing else matters
In many ways they were the same player: both tall and gangly, neither could jump well. Magic was great on the run, Bird had perfect form and a deadly jump shot, but mostly they were both completely unselfish and devoted to winning. They both had almost supernatural court sense and brilliant instincts. They were perfect rivals and they both were surrounded by incredibly talented teammates who became superstars because of these two.
They became great off-court friends while shooting a Converse commercial at Bird's home in Indiana in '86, but their friendship was always in a lock-box when they were on the court.
Highlight reels are fun to watch and all, but in the end it's about the scoreboard: They played against each other for the NBA trophy 3 times, with Bird winning the first and Magic the next two. In the 80's the Lakers won 5/10 rings to the Celtics' 3.
Jordan's Bulls were a great and worthy team, but despite Michael's success and fame, he never had a rival in the league during his prime that was like Bird/Magic. And I've always felt that the game suffered because of this -- All of the young players coming after wanted to "be like Mike," and now the league is full of great shooters, but no one plays the game like Larry or Magic anymore. and that's our loss...
"What is that shot?"
A bucket.
Hope you show your wife that the Bird v Magic NCAA championship game in 1979 is still the most watched ever. Then they were drafted 1 and 2 right after. Magic 1, Bird 2
They came in to the lake at the same time
Era un espectáculo verlo jugar, crecí viéndolo y todavía alucino con la visión de juego, calidad y pura fantasía, para mí el más apetecible de ver, un saludo
I've seen a bunch of your reactions and my opinion is, don't change a thing, unless you think it will increase your subs. Two suggestions for reactions.
Since you've reacted to Mr. Johnson and Mr. Bird, there's a video that shows their relationship from their NCAA championship game to after retirement. You'll like it 100%, it will answer a lot of your questions. "A Courtship of Rivals basketball"
It's time to show your wife Jason Williams. It appears she enjoys a top tier passing game and you get a bonus of "flash" with White Chocolate .
Mahalo for your hard work and sharing. 🤙😎
Agree! “Magic & Bird: A Courtship of Rivals” is so well done, and had tons of info that I'd never heard.
Did she just say that Magic Johnson is psychotic for wanting ball when the game is on the line?
It's called leading your team to victory.
You looking like Larry bird right now.....lol....love you guys.....keep it up....
Great reaction y’all should do Michael Jordan‘s historic mixtape next 🐐
you should watch Magic & Bird: A Courtship of Rivals its a great documentary that tells the complete story it really is an amazing video
Larry Johnson!!! Grand ma ma😊
When I used to play basketball in high school we ran like certain plays like all the time magic is assuming that that guy it's supposed to be in their exact spot at the same time
Ummm. He became an accurate perimeter shooter... and his free throws 80-90%
6:53 - Jokic is is that passer you want to see.
As stated below watch HBO Magic & Bird: A Courtship of Rivals”. Complete History of them both. Bird Shot 90% from the Free through Line. Bird also won 3 league MVP's in a row, Won 3 point contest 3 years in a row. Beat Magic for rookie of the Year 1979.
Magic beat Bird 3-2 in chips. Magic is the only ROOKIE Finals MVP. Was in the championship 9 Outta 12 years. Beat Bird and the Celtics, Isaiah and the Pistons, & Dr J and the 76ers. Magic always beat champions to become a champion. Also had a solid FG% for his entire career & avg. double digit Assists for his career. Thank baby Jesus I was alive to see both of their entire careers.
The 80s lakers seldom shot 3's....but they're scored the 120s often. They were an offensive juggernaut.. Sometimes in the 130s
Yes....to clear it up....Kareem injured his ankle in game 5 of the 1980 NBA finals...in game 6, as a 20 year old rookie, Magic started at center and technically played all 5 positions and willed The Lakers to the championship...IN Phili!
Magic defeated Bird for the NCAA championship and they both entered the NVA for the 79-80 season. Magic won 5 rings and played in 9 finals in a career cut short by the virus. Magic's shot wasn't pretty but he was a career 85 % ft shooter and career 52% on FGs (compare that to Kobe Bryant who shot 83.7 on FTs and 44.7 on FGs). The 3 pt shot was a small part of the game back then -- most he ever took was 1.3 3s per game in 89-90 and he made 38% that year. Jordan is the goat -- but Magic and Larry are both high on the list. If pressed My 1st 5 by strict position would be Kareem-C, Magic-PG, Jordan-SG, Lebron-SF, Duncan-PF. But if I want the best starting 5, I will just put Bird in for Duncan and slide Lebron to PF -- still plenty of size, rebounding, and no need for two low post scorers.
Jordan and the Bulls were 0-6 against Bird and the Celtics in the playoffs until Bird retired.
Checkout Making the Case for GOAT. They have one for Bird, Magic and Jordan. They are really good .👍
Have you done the 1992 mens olympic basketball team?
Great reaction you two! Can ya reaction to Jordan's Historic Bulls Mixtape made by the NBA?
BOTH CAME IN SAME TIME GUYS 😊, BOTH WERE PISSED CAUSE MAGIC HAD WON THE CHAMPIONSHIP FOR 80 AND LARRY WON ROOKIE OF THE YEAR 😊THE ULTIMATE COMPETITORS!
Came same year
Im normally not one for allowing for exceptions to rules for one person, but they should have granted his exception to enter the HOF early. He should have gone in with Bird
you gotta do one of these on Wilt Chamberlain too. he was the most dominant force ever. as for football, you gotta do on eon Barry sanders
Bird also called MJ ......God disguised as MJ
Before 3 pointers
Bird is the only Player Jordon never beat in the Playoffs. Boston swept the Bulls in one of them. All of this is in the HBO Special.
Jordan never beat me in the playoffs either! What are you talking about? Are you saying that the Bulls never beat the Celtics when both Bird and Jordan were playing? True, but Boston had been eliminated before they met sometimes, or vice versa.
Bird swept the Bulls twice
Magic beat Bird in the NCAA (finals) and won 5 rings to Bird's 3, Magic was 3 time nba MVP to bird's 2. Bird said Magic won their rivalry the numbers agree with him
The Portland Trailblazers had the first pick in the 1978 draft. Larry Bird was a member of that draft class. They passed on Larry, who was drafted 6th btw, and selected Mychal Thompson. 6 years later the Trailblazers had the second pick in that years draft. They drafted Sam Bowie. Sam only played 63 out of a possible 328 games in 4 years in Portland. He broke his legs 3 times while in Portland. The player drafted right after Sam at number 3? Micheal Jordan. Portland could have, should have had both Larry Bird and Micheal Jordan on their team at the same time. Insert your best Homer Simpson DOH here.. Then again had they drafted Bird chances are they wouldn't have had the 2nd pick in 1984 but we will never know..
Same year came in both in 1980
You gotta do Doctor Jay
Y'all need to react to Shawn Kemp dunks
I got you!!
Bird was drafted in 1978......Magic 1979
YOU COULD ALWAYS DO A KOBE MIX, DR.J MIX, KAREEM MIX THERE'S 3 GR8 1'S THERE!👍😊 HAPPY HOLIDAYS GUYS, ALL THE BEST!😊
Magic and Showtime are the Warriors (without the 3's) at their most popular...more popular I'd say but obviously Showtime was more important CB32..I've signed my name this way since '81..love Magic..POINT GOD
I Think Celtics & Lakers Both Have 17 Tital's Which has Them Both In The #1 Spot, I Think?
when Bird and Johnson became friends. ruclips.net/video/iVKJ7IAOKLI/видео.html
Congratulations! You just witnessed the greatest basketball player ever!!!
Any Pistol Pete Maravich on the itinerary?
Got you next week!!

I’ve watched your reactions to Magic’s and Bird’s mixtapes, and all 4 parts to the documentary “A Courtship of Rivals”. Great stuff.
You both should check out and react to this video:
“The Magic Man” Magic Johnson mix (made by NPZ).

This compilation really captures Magic leading the Showtime Lakers on the fast break. They ran the break relentlessly - watching it in person must’ve been so much fun, with those passes and ball movement.
I bet you’ll need to rewind a number of times just to try to catch where the pass went, bc often, it wound up going to a different person than you expected. You could make a game out of trying to guess. Playing with him must’ve also been fun.
For real, tho, please check this video out sometime - great video to react to…
"HES INFESTED"?!! ....That was unnecessary and uncalled for
Your wife is a beautiful young lady, but it’s not because of your wife dude it’s because of your old school basketball players that you chose to check out.. this is the basketball it doesn’t exist today and the reason I haven’t watch since the 90s
I'm Guessing Your Shoe Size Is 13.?.
Wrong LOL
@@7footreacts ,,, 🤣OK 12?
@@gailshepard-cook6350 Wrong x2
@@7footreacts ,,, 🤣 Ok , Here's My Last Try 14?
My shoe size is 14 and I am 6 foot 3.
Try a size 16 or 17.
It's too bad the league is full of incredibly talented players that the rules have made one dimensional and boring.
“Anyways he’s infested.”
No wonder you have to resort to RUclips videos to make money. Also no wonder only about 300 watch.
Thats not how he shoots.
