You'll likely get more bass mileage out of the John Peel session for this song, on the ‘Hatful of Hollow’ compilation. A wonderful collection of alternative, contemporaneous recordings.

"Jeane" by the Smiths: 'Upbeat, happy Andycentric music, with sad lyrics, and no fade out at the end. I feel sorry for Jeane. I hope she's doing OK now.

I'm late to this party! As a fully paid up old fart I was in my early 20's when The Smiths crashed into the 80's in England. Like Marmite, not many were on the fence abut them. For me they were and still are a breath of fresh air. Really enjoyed your comments and reactions on all your Smiths videos - a fond reminder of my own responses back in the day. Thank you, and if you ever fancy another dip into their catalogue, I recommend Ask, Still Ill, and Cemetry Gates

Morrissey had a profound way of translating real life experiences and feelings in to lyrics. It isn't anywhere near as easy as it sounds. My favourite from this track is '...but now you make me feel so ashamed because i've only got two hands...'

Moz would so approve of your background, like Freddy Mercury he loves cats! The song is about unrequited love, no matter how hard you try it’s not enough, I know that feeling and ‘heaven knows I’m miserable now’.

Hi Lauren! 'Please, please, please, let me get what I want' and 'Half a person' are two of my personal favourites from The Smiths. If you feel like returning to Pulp, I would recommend 'Babies', 'Do you remember the first time' and 'This is hardcore'. Love the content, Love from Wrexham, Wales. ❤

What disturbs me about the pictures in the background is not the cat or headphones, I like both cats and headphones. What disturbs me is that the headphones are not over the cat's ears. I have not listened to the Smiths in years but I remember that the music is great and lyrics are unique.

  • @MattDavey68

This song is more guitar led. I think it is a song about sharing a secret with a trusted friend "We have been through hell and high tide I can surely rely on you" And then being rejected "And yet you start to recoil, heavy words are so lightly thrown" And later in the song "Your prejudice won't keep you warm tonight"
Who knows what the secret was? Was it romantic interest in a male friend? People have speculated.
I can't believe you have not listened to "Heaven knokws I'm Miserable Now" lol

Morrissey may well have turned out to be a crummy person but he is a lyrical genius with an under appreciated injection of humour. Johnny Marr....puts together musically in such a beautiful way and plays the guitar so clinically clinician with the guitar

Since you've touched upon the first Smiths album. It has a completely different sound then the albums that follow. It is not the best Smiths album, but it is my favorite because it is so raw, honest, unique and unusual at the time of release. Sure, JOY DIVISION might have been more depressing, but no one has Morrissey's lyrical balance of humor, wit, and intelligence. I would suggest the two creepiest songs on the debut album, since October is right around the corner: THE HAND THAT ROCKS THE CRADLE and SUFFER LITTLE CHILDREN.

IMO, there are very few songs in The Smiths catalogue that don't contain something of interest. Their songs are also quite diverse, so I think you'll find a lot of variety in people's favourites from them. Personally, I like early Smiths and would suggest Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Know and Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want, but I think that if you keep listening to them you will find your own favourites, which won't necessarily be their most popular songs.

I love the first Smiths album, but is a bit dead sounding…in the way it was recorded and mixed. Much better version to be heard on their Hatful of Hollow album. Not one of their proper albums as it contains some BBC radio one session recordings. But is a brilliant starting point for any fan of the Smiths.
