The guitar work in this is astonishing. As is the bass
Yes I agree, "That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore" is one of the great tracks on the album, right up there with "The Headmaster Ritual", "Well I Wonder", "Barbarism Begins At Home" and the title track "Meat Is Murder", so personally I couldn't decide between those five.
Sublime melancholy.
In my top 5 favourite Smiths tracks
First time I heard it, I got choked up. I think it has one of Johnny's saddest guitar lines.
Can’t wait for Well I Wonder and Barbarism Begins At Home, Andy Roukes baselines are so melodic
This is one of my favourite Smiths tracks. Very melancholic. I used to listen to it on winter nights at home along with a few other soul searching Smiths tracks. The guitar in this is what makes it so great.
Probably my favourite Smiths track. Marr’s spectral guitar is incredible. Great song!
Incredibly important song to me.
My favourite Smiths song - when I listened to their Singles compilation with a dear friend of mine in the late 90s (he was already a fan), it was this song that I realised that I'd found a new favourite band. The atmosphere is just breathtaking - so dramatic, so melancholy, so beautiful. Every Smith delivers an astonishing performance here - the vocals (great lyrics too), the guitars (my goodness, the guitars!), the bass, the drums...this is the kind of song from which obsessions are born, and mine started here. Love your reaction, and especially how you responded to the 'kick them when they fall down' stretch, which is such an eloquent section of music that I used to rewind and listen to that bit over and over. The single version (amazing that this was a single - a bold choice, but a commercially unsuccessful one) removes the last minute when it fades back in, and it's a lesser version because of that.
Well said….the Smiths are always great….but there are a handful of songs that make them immortal. This is one of them
Once you realize that Johnny Marr is one of the greatest musical geniuses we’ve had in the last 40 years, it makes you want to listen to every note the man has ever written or played. This song is perfect. I was so spoiled when I was 15 years old and heard the album.
For me, I think the line about might dying with a smile on my face after all is just a line of hope and that life might get better, like there's a light that never goes out.
I feel the same!
My favourite joke is what the inflatable teacher said to the inflatable boy who brought a pin to his inflatable school - "You've let me down, you've let the school down, but worst of all, you've let yourself down".
Best track on the album is "Well I Wonder".
I love this song so much, heard it for the first time 39 years ago, and it still breaks my heart.
Great song from my favourite album by The Smiths
I once bought a dog off a locksmith.
When I got it home it made a bolt for the door!
You can't really hear the whole lyric sung in the song, but one of the most poignant parts is, ooooo ooooo (why must you) kick them when they fall down, kick them when they fall down. ooooo ooooo (why must you) kick them when they fall down, kick them when they fall down.
Subliminal but hits hard ❤
You just swim in that sea of guitar. It's so nice!
Best track? Let's pretend that this and "How soon is now" are one track. It's fine, we can do that!
I felt a part of an exclusive club being a 'Smiths' fan in Southern Oregon, when 'The Queen is Dead' 1st came out.
I got the opportunity to see Johnny Marr , 1of my guitar heroes, just a couple of years back at relatively small venue in Portland, Or. And a matter of months later saw 'Morrissey' (same city, bigger venue) ....Both Fantastic, both played plenty of 'Smiths' tunes; and I figure it was as close to actually seeing 'The Smiths' , in these later days, as one could get. Just Awesome - 🍖is🗡
- Oh BTW, Still look forward U checkin' out Bryan Ferry's next record, the great - 'Bete Noir', where our bud Johnny Marr assumes role as guitarist 🎸 of course.
I agree with you. This song (it's one of my favorites from the band) and "Headmaster ritual" are the best songs on the album.
The brilliance of the second greatest band in history (after the Beatles) is extremely apparent in this magnificent song.
Definitely up there with the songwriting greats 😊
I shunned The Smiths for a few years as a prog snob in late 80s UK. Shame on me. Loved them for decades now ❤
Sublime
My all-time favorite SMITHS song. I think it's brilliant sounding... haunting... pointed... their greatest vibe ever... and it has stayed with me since the first time I've ever heard it. Absolutely adore this song. ...another couple of songs with an incredible vibe is from the magnificent NZ band THE CHILLS: "The Great Escape" and "Night Of The Chill Blue"... both songs are haunting masterpieces worthy of your attention. Great reaction as usual, JP!!
Have you tried listening to any of Johnny Marr's solo stuff? He still has one of the most recognisable guitar sounds going. 'New Town Velocity' is a good'un. Keep up the good work and wonderfully varied reactions. Bob.
Ive been listening to the Smiths since 1986 and have never noticed the car effect you picked out. Its all subjective but I think you're right! Certainly how I'm going to hear it from now on. Love the care and detail you put into your reactions generally. (Just to drive the point home)
Thank you for another great reaction please do more!!!
Leather seats are murder.
I LOVE THIS CHANNEL! And also my husband splurged on an expensive Bose speaker, while I am the one who says NOOOO don't spend, it's made listening to this song and The Buggles album REALLY NICE!!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
A great song. 'I Started a Joke' by the Bee Gees is another great joke song.
The key word in the title might be "anymore. " He used to find it funny, but not now he s lonely himself.
Sharp analysis. While this is not a personal favourite (and maybe the song I like the least on the record, sshhh) I get the scope, the subdued grandeur of the song, especially as a side one closer. I like the parallel with TIALTNGO, too.
When not to mess with the wife. She was running late for work and asked, "Can you make me a sandwich quick?" She went outside. I quickly made her her favorite sandwich and hid it in the microwave. Then bagged a molasses cookie. When she came in I held up the cookie and said, "A sandwich quick is called a cookie." She said I'll take it. I owned up telling her the sandwich was in the microwave. She went, "You know. You're the only one here who thinks this is funny!" "I'll take the cookie too." (I have no strong opinions about the song.)
Your joke is in the same vein as "Pobody's Nerfect" which was used in the TV series "The Good Place". There are t-shirts.
Never thought of the rising guitar as being tire squeals, but yeah, that fits!
That just seems to happen on a Smiths album, and this particular one...in particular, lol.
The Smiths is my all time favorite along with George Harrison's work
It's a good track, but Well I Wonder is tops for me on this album.
Agreed. One of the better Smiths songs.
I can’t pick a favorite on this album.
*That* same joke, told Now (once agreed either as being funny or allowed to pass without speaking up) isn't funny Anymore.
At least in ''There Is A Light That Never Goes Out'' the double-decker bus/ten ton truck will kill them Both: company by one's side at the very end ("heavenly''), unlike here...
😂
Maybe the fadeout is the joke?
The Smiths produced some ho-hum tracks in their time. This wasn't one of them. Ranks alongside How Soon is Now? as one of their best.
