Considering the Imperial Guard actually uses motorised infantry, combined arms assault doctrine, defensive positioning and artillery on campaign, you can be sure I would rather join those guys than the Mobile Infantry seen in the movies.
In the book, they are : Jet Pack infantry, hence the name Mobile Infantry (the movie technology at the time didn't allow for it to be implemented in the film).

Federation authorities advise against it, warning Mormons that Bugs are in the area. Mormons ignore warnings and settle anyway, but take the precautions of building walls and guns. Bugs react to interlopers in their territory by exterminating humans. Bugs launch FTL asteroid at Earth, which wasn't involved, but is the homeworld of the race which invaded their lands. Asteroid wipes out Buenos Aires, killing eight million people (more than Jewish part of Holocaust) in a few minutes. Federation goes to War. Obviously, this is a fascist regime which needs a war to justify its existence. Y'know, as opposed to the liberal democracy shown in the movie. There is a fascist regime shown in this movie. It's just the Bugs.
Purists get mad that they aren't power armored behemoths but I think the global police force light infantry forced to fight giant melee bugs is way cooler.
