I Can't Trust The Joseph Smith Translation

  • There's a problem with the Joseph Smith Translation (JST) version of Romans 4. Mormons claim that Joseph Smith received direct revelation for the JST, and that's why there's no Biblical manuscript record of any of the JST's changes. But in the case of Romans 4, the JST directly flips the meaning of the Biblical text in a way that doesn't make sense for the surrounding context.
    If Joseph's change to Romans 4:5 really is a problem, then it demonstrates that Joseph wasn't receiving divine revelation for the JST. And if Joseph wasn't receiving divine revelation for the JST, then he's a false prophet.
    In this video, I explain why Joseph Smith's version of Romans 4 doesn't match with the surrounding context of Romans, and completely flips Paul's intended meaning on its head.

    Did you guys know about this change in the JST? I often bring this change up when I'm talking with Latter-day Saints on the street as a way to demonstrate the differences between what I believe and what the Latter-day Saint Organization has taught... Adding that "not" is a really significant change!

    This is important because one cannot exercise saving faith while unknowingly or knowingly relying on what you have done or will do to be justified or declared righteous. Justifying faith is exercised when you come to the end of yourself. Jesus did not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.

    I love how Christians ignore all the places where the Bible says you actually have to do something to be saved. Like in acts 2 when Peter says repent and be baptized. Or 1 Corinthians when Paul talks about building on the foundation and that every man will be judged according to his own works. Or when John said to repent and SIN NO MORE. Let’s just ignore all that though

    One of the oddest changes in the JST is that it rewrites the creation story of Genesis in the 1st person perspective of God.
    "Yea, in the beginning I created the heaven and the earth upon which thou standest. And the earth was without form and void; and I caused darkness to come up upon the face of the deep. And my Spirit moved upon the face of the waters, for I am God. And I, God, said, Let there be light; and there was light."
    Like what's the point of that.

    God loves Mormons and that’s why he wants them to believe that he is God who died for them on the cross for their sins so they can be forgiven without any of their religious dogma

    I noticed that a while back when I was comparing translations. Even more egregious, in my opinion, is John 1:1 where he turned the Word into the gospel, and then made it Jesus in 1:14 (and apparently turned θεος in the last clause of 1:1 into the genitive case). I also find it kind of interesting that he left the _Comma Johanneum_ intact.

      @@Imtryingtobelikejesus-m1m Actually, “Mormonism” (you use the term more than I do) has caused me to focus on my beliefs a lot in the past three or four years since I started being approached by the missionaries. It’s helped me refine the areas of doctrine that have been a part of my life over the decades. And it hasn’t stopped me from loving and serving mankind, despite what you may think.
      So yes, I’m calling out the JST. Do you not *RELENTLESSLY* tear apart the Biblical teaching on hell? Is that any different? How are you not being a little hypocritical? Do we not both have the right to call out error as we see it? I’m ready to defend the Biblical teaching on hell, as I have with many clicks of the keyboard to you over the past year and a half. And you have every right to try to defend the JST. Healthy conversational debate is good and I encourage it.

    This is totally a translation from the original language. Yup it's not like Joseph just literally took the Bible and deeply twisted it, to make it fit his teachings.

    Romans 11:6 is talking about the works of the mosaic law not the works of righteousness done by those who are saved by grace through faith. James 2:26.

    Yes, and even though the Joseph Smith Translations in both those instances are directly opposed to all the other translations, the JST is correct.
    We are saved by faith and works, or faith through works. That's what the original text said, too, until somebody changed it about 1900 years ago.

    Romans 4:4 (JST) “Now to him who is justified by the law of works, is the reward reckoned, not of grace, but of debt. 5 But to him that seeketh not to be justified by the law of works, but believeth on him who justifieth not the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.”
    1 Corinthians 6:9 (AKJV) “Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, 10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.” One must be baptized, sanctified, and justified in order to inherit the kingdom of God. James 2:24 (AKJV) “Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.” Both faith and works are required!

    Without a doubt mormonism is another gospel warned about by Paul in galations 1. And also a different christ warned by Jesus in matthew 24. A forever changing man made religion.

    Although I don't trust the Joseph Smith Translation either, I don't have an issue with his "elaboration" here other than the fact that he shouldn't be tampering with the text (even though I do take issue with what he taught elsewhere). The modern faith-alone doctrine taught by preachers when quoting Paul is false. Even without factoring in the JST, Paul's writings should not be read as endorsing the doctrine of salvation through faith-alone, which Paul himself clarifies on within his own text, such as Romans 3: 31. The phrase, "the works of the law," that Paul used in Romans 3: 28 doesn't mean the Ten Commandments. It means the ritual works of the ancient Jewish Law -- these rituals are the things no longer required in Christianity which Paul was referring to. However, the works of love which a person does by living by the Ten Commandments is required for salvation, because Jesus said that they hang on his two great commandments of love.

    Your understanding falls short. God loves all sinners, not just Mormons. I believe you have missed the mark in your explanation, because you left out an important part in verse 4 that basically describes who the ungodly are as attempting to be justified by the law of works alone. God does not justify the ungodly, not by their works, but by grace. Verse 5 clarifies that he who is justified by God does not seek to be justified by works. Verse 16 then brings it home after talking about the work of circumcision saying that circumcision doesn't save you, but faith and works are only justified through grace. It doesn't say to add works to faith. We know though that justified faith is shown by good works thanks to James as well as understanding the need to be obedient as Romans 6 explains. Also as made mention in 1 Samuel 15:22 ..."Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams."
    Does this undermine the entire law of works? It shows us that the law of works and sacrifice does not bring salvation, but the better way is obedience to God's voice which comes by faith and not tradition. Both sides have works, as they are not done away with. One side is dead and the other alive. I think your representation of the JST here is not in full context and is quite frankly dishonest and misguided. We are blessed to have a Savior and access to his spirit to be cleansed of our iniquity though, so I pray for speedy repentance through Jesus Christ.

    There is a problem with this persons preaching. Even invoking of the antichrist spirit by using modern bibles which come from the vatican (which is Satan’s church).
    If any would want the true words of God, that is the King James Bible.

    You are missing the forest for the trees. The paradigm of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is that all of us are the literal children of the Father. We all lived with Him prior to the Creation. We are dual beings, an eternal spirit child of the Father housed in a mortal body for purposes of growth, just one part of our eternal journey of eternal progression. We all choose Christ prior to being born, and as such all born into this world have already locked in salvation from spiritual and physical death. We will all be resurrected to immortal bodies after death and we will all receive a heavenly glory. Further, if we continue to choose Christ in this life, then we can also go onto exaltation, to continue on our path of eternal progression.
    So, going back to the scripture in question, Joseph Smith was clarifying that Christ is necessary because we cannot be justified otherwise. It is pretty simple to understand once you have the actual framework. Otherwise, yeah, sola scriptura is kind of like trying to put together a jigsaw puzzle without the box showing what it is you are trying to put together and not knowing if you have all the pieces or not. In that sense, sola scriptura usually ends up in a great deal of missing the forest for the trees.
    This appears to be the problem that apparently at least a few scribes and pharisees had. The too had their scriptures. They too knew them inside and out. However, they were missing the framework, and as such, they completely missed the Truth standing right in front of them because they had placed their minds into what they thought was logical. Logic is useful, to be sure, but only if you have the framework correct. Otherwise, you will likely arrive at the wrong conclusions and force a narrative just to make the logic the fit.

      No my friend God makes it clear in the Bible that all who don’t repent will see judgement. All who are born into this world are born into sin, and must repent and be born again of the water and the spirit. Your temple contradicts the Bible, and that’s the infallible word we all agree on, therefore it is false and my friend you will see judgement if you don’t repent and turn to the real Jesus is eternal and died on the cross for our sins because unlike what you’ve said we are born into sin and are dead in our transgressions. Those things cannot be reconciled. The Bible is the word of God, the Book of Mormon was written by a man not inspired by God. You can tell because the books don’t agree with each other. The temple work isn’t like the original temple from the Bible, the practices you guys do are not God ordained(like the practices of the Catholics). I pray the Lord opens your eyes today to see the truth and that you come to know freedom in the real Jesus Christ. In Jesus name Amen. I pray my friend that the Lord uncovers your eyes that have been painted with lies by the wicked one. You must know the truth. Buy it and sell it not. Know the Lord by reading only the Bible, and fast from that doctrine you were taught. That spirit is lying to you and seeks to kill you. Turn to the real gospel and start there. Let God show you and be ready and willing to unlearn the lies and know the truth. God bless you my friend I hope to see you in the kingdom of God one day. God winks at our ignorance and has mercy upon us. He will have mercy upon you if you come to him ready to learn and don’t merely turn away from the truth.     The Joseph Smith Translation was not a translation from Greek to English but a revelation from God to elements of the scriptures that have been altered and omitted from the text. Take for example the Codex Sinaiticus, written in Greek it is the oldest New Testament in existence and on examining it one will see whole text were later added, such as "without cause" when Jesus was warning against anger. The King James Version has the extra "without cause," but the Book of Mormon and Joseph Smith Translation do not. It was a corrupt addition many centuries after Christ that even our oldest copies of the Bible don't have. Joseph Smith did not have access to the Codex Sinaiticus as the text was not commonly known even in Europe until the year he died.
    Take, for example, the passage the presenter in the video uses from Romans in regard to Abraham. As we read it in our current Bibles, it contradicts what James says in regard to faith and works. Abraham was clearly justified by his works. Seeing that if he refused to sacrifice his son, it would have counted as disobedience.

      Smith didn't need to know about Sinaiticus. A BYU professor and his former research assistant have made a case that Smith had access to Adam Clarke’s commentary on the Bible. In that commentary Clarke explains that “without a cause” is not found in Vaticanus nor in some other manuscripts and was probably added at some point. Apparently this was the first discovery that linked Smith with the Clarke commentary. I'm not suggesting that this has to be the source of Smith's omission of the clause, but it appears to be a possibility. The real reason Smith omitted the clause can’t be proven one way or another, but when I see how he botched John 1:1, there has to be a reason other than divine inspiration.
      Regarding Paul’s apparent contradiction with James, if that’s the case, then why didn’t Smith “correct” all the rest of Romans rather than just the one verse? One of the keys to understanding the apparent discrepancy is to realize that Paul and James used different senses of meaning for the word “justify,” which is perfectly legitimate.

      It can be really hard to discern who is hearing from God and who isn’t. I love that God is so good to us that he gives us a way we can reasonably test a prophet to see if they are speaking from Him. See the end of Deuteronomy chapter 18
      21And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken? 22When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.
      (The beginning verses of Deut 13 is helpful on this as well)
      So according to God, a true prophet of God will always prophesy truth. Whatever he speaks in God’s name WILL come to pass. One false prophecy means that they are not a true prophet.
