Honestly I really liked this one tbh, it felt like a game and I honestly think you made a very convincing animation to where I thought this was a recreated game game of some sort
My god, the pain it must've been to animate accurate game physics, so much work put into this, I loved it, may be one of your best videos yet, the last part really disturbed me!
We've come a long way since Garfield Gameboy'd! Hopefully you're enjoying these more 'authentic' creepy videos that have actual real gameplay. For this animation I even built a few custom levels. It's more work, but it really makes a difference imo!
Plants are awesome agents of horror in general, if you ask me. I think they're super underutilized. The fun about plants is that they're mindless, and yet willful. No sentience, and yet very much alive. Like zombies, but more original, and with many more possibilities. I ran a DnD game where the main bad guy was a castle sized intelligent [but not fully sentient] plant. It was fantastic.
I'm surprised how spooky the GB can sound despite its limitations, or I guess high pitched screechy stuff just gets me jumpy. Those are some really nice additions to the backgrounds you made, really gives the world a lot more atmosphere and life (despite the dead toad).
eh, I feel whatever spookiness the track has is moreso with how overused it's in creepypastas than the track itself being all that scary, I find it more sad than anything (and maybe a bit ear piercing). I never found it unsettling as a kid at the least, less so now.
Something I really enjoy here is how when you read or see something to interact with the Gameboy requires a hard cut to show the detail of the text/object which usually comes with a cut in the music. Even if the image itself isn't "Scary" theres a feeling of dread when you return to the game screen since you are no longer focused on the level for a moment. It works so well and isn't something that can really work outside the original gameboy since the hardware limitations are what make those cuts necessary.
I was half-expecting Daisy to transform into that shadow thing that pops up from the pipe at the beginning, knowing the amount of fake Daisies in the original game. The actual result certainly didn't disappoint me.
Pretty sure it ran out of batteries. When the original gameboy ran out of battery, the screen would slowly fade, and you could combat this for a few seconds by turning up contrast, until the battery was 100% dead.
@@LumpyTouch Who the hell wouldent turn off the gameboy when they see mario getting killed by plants? i think they would delete the save and do a new game to save mario from the plant queen
nah, thats the sound of someone panic shutting the gameboy off abruptly, i remember doing that quite a number of times when i ended up screwing up on pokemon fights in my youth. the screen sort of just fades off like that.

Excellent work, Lumpy! I really like the combination of the style of horror and the source material. They’ve also already followed up the game with Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon and Luigi’s Mansion 3, neither of which flopped either critically or sales-wise. Here's my theory. I think I figured out what's going on in the video. This plant monster thing is like a living drug. It's psychedelic, and let's the user see whatever it wants to see so it can lure it in and kill it's prey. You become high by smelling it's fumes, hence the "follow the sweet smell" message on the walls. What we the player see when Mario goes deeper underground is what's actually happening and Mario isn't able to see it. That's why he just sees Princess Daisy normally at the end and disregards the excessive overgrowth of plants and the dead Toads. He's so high that he can't see the horrors in front of him, he only sees the illusion of what he wants to see. The fact there's other Toads trapped and possibly died from the plant monster means other people have been addicted to the plant. Overall my theory is that this is Lumpy making an anti drug PSA and trying to show how addiction literally destroys you. (Lumpy if you're reading this and I'm wrong, please correct me).
