As a Manga reader, I adored Stampede. It's not accurate to Maximum & yet it's incredibly faithful to it. I think Nightow has grown a lot as a story teller.
Also, I completely lost my s*** when I saw BLACK VASH finally being worked into the story! I love that they actually worked in the action figure variant! 🤣

A studio Orange panel was held at SakuraCon and apparently the creator himself wanted the story expanded so he gave the greenlight, not to mention he wanted more sci-fi elements which is why they were much stronger in Stampede and the change to .22 caliber was his idea
Season 2 is in production and the better reception Trigun gets, the more series they can make so yeah if youre a big fan of Trigun just know this whole thing has the backing of Nightow himself!

As someone that only JUST got into Trigun this year (OG anime, Stampede, and manga) I don't have the nostalgia goggles, so I can look at ALL three versions for what they are. So far, Trigum Maximum is the best version of Trigun, Stampede is my personal fave version, and the 98 anime is WAY too quotable and I am basically always quoting it. Depending on how they do Stampede season 2.. Stampede COULD be the best version. Also Stampede is literally the BEST 3D anime I have EVER seen!

Grew up with Trigun and the manga. I was unsure about the CGI when it was announced but when I seen the trailer I was hooked. It's good. No. Its amazing and probably one of the best remakes I have seen today. The redesigns are great. I like Vashs new look. They kept the red and the old look would have probably been hard to make look good. We will see with season 2 if he has his old look or keeps the red. I hope the new red jacket comes back and the undercut fluffy hair. I think it fits his soft personality. As much as I do love the og hair style I personally think that it makes him look more like his brother and a bad guy with the CGI look.

I’m not an anime person. Never have been. But this was absolutely PHENOMENAL!! The storyline, the graphics, every scene perfectly crafted. I am so hooked. Curious if anyone else feels the same - but did your heart not break for Nai?? I think the way they crafted his character and told his story was such a beautiful, honest representation of light and darkness that can coexist in someone. Everything Nai did was out of love. Love for his brother and love for his kind. He did terrible things for good reasons. And Vash is the same way. Everything he does is out of love. But their actions out of love are both extremes on opposite ends of the spectrum. Vash is so self sacrificial and forgiving and hopeful and Nai fights to protect what he loves at any cost. My heart just broke for them both. So much pain and good and bad and beauty and I’m just so moved by this whole show. I can’t wait for season 2!!

@@Sunnyso24 Tbh it really depends on what you are into. Do you like sci-fi, fantasy, rom-com, slice of life, gritty and realistic, weird and philosophical, etc.
But, here are a few I really enjoy.
Odd Taxi is a gritty murder mystery set in modern day Tokyo. Don't let the artstyle fool you! There is a very good reason the characters look the way they do that I can't get into without some pretty major spoilers. But it is seriously deep, and feels like you're watching a cross between a Guy Ritchie/Quentin Tarantino film that was split into 12 or maybe 13 I forget TV episodes.
Vivy; Fluorite Eyes Song is a sci-fi show about a theme park pop idol android who gets pulled into a 100 year long project to prevent the destruction of humanity via a robot uprising. It's gorgeously animated and examines themes of humanity, consciousness, creativity and the soul.
Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex and the GitS movies are all regarded as classics. They were definitely inspiration for Vivy, but take place in a gritty more dystopian futuristic setting.
Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo. One is a space western about a group of lovable (but also kinda jerks) bounty hunters. The other is a period piece set in historic Japan. Both are made by the same creator and both are highly episodic. They both do have an overarching plot, but most of the time you're just vibing with the cast in a cool setting.
Code Geass is a philosophical sci fi drama with lots of mech fights and political intrigue. It follows a displaced Britannian Noble who leads a rebellion against his family with a power he acquires from a mysterious woman.
Re; Zero is an Isekai (transported to another world) fantasy drama/horror)intrigue. The main character is (intentionally) a bit of a wimp. He seems to have the attention of a certain mystic entity within that world that refuses to allow him to die. And he dies, like.... A lot. Occasionally more than once an episode! The MC is basically a well intentioned Otaku who can be a bit of a moron who was dropped into the middle of a complicated political intrigue. But he gets better as the show progresses and the story/lore are interesting af imo
Vinland Saga is historical fiction about when the Vikings invaded England around 1000 AD. The MC is fictional, but the broad strokes of the story follow the actual history, with some obvious dramatizations. It's very well animated and emotional. Askelaad especially is an incredibly morally complex character, and there will be several points during the show where you're not sure who to root for.
Overlord is the story of an ordinary Japanese Salaryman who ends up trapped in the body of a character he played in an MMO that shut down. His transformation into a Lich comes with the deadening of his emotions, and you are definitely following the story of the Big Bad Evil Guy as he takes over the world, but it's glorious seeing the contrast between well meaning socially awkward Japanese Salaryman trying to act like the big tough boss so all his evil minions don't rebel against him (even though they very likely never would)
86 is a dystopian sci-fi mech show following a war between humanity and the machine army they created. It examines several different types of government, as well as racism. I can't get into too much more without spoilers, but it is very good.
Anohana follows the story of a group of friends who grew apart after a tragedy. Again, can't get into too much more without spoilers, but it is one of the most emotionally impactful shows I have ever seen, and imo is the greatest "how to teach people to deal with grief" manual. Watch it if you are ever in need of just, the best crying session.
Sword of the Stranger is a movie. It follows the story of a wandering swordsman who decides to protect a young boy who is being hunted. It is also historical fiction.
Campfire Cooking in Another World with my Absurd skill is a slice of life fantasy show that follows an average dude who gets summoned to another world..... By complete accident because he was standing too close to the actual heroes. It's hilarious, but also very insightful about politics. The MC decides to become a travelling merchant, gets some very powerful friends because of his ability to cook delicious meals, and travels around a fantasy world. It's part food porn, part comedy, and 100% good vibes.
Bocchi the Rock follows an incredibly social awkward young girl who decides to learn to play the guitar to make friends. Spoiler alert, spending hours and hours in her room practicing guitar didn't make her any better at it. It's an incredibly cute and funny show, the animation is great (it changes styles often for the gags in a way that is just perfect), the MC is incredibly relatable, and the music isn't half bad either.
Elfin Lied is a story about man's inhumanity towards anyone we consider "less than human" or different. It follows a young woman with a mutation that basically gives her psychic powers. The first episode is her escaping from the lab where she was held, but in the process experiencing sever head trauma that gives her something of a split personality. Warning - gore and nudity. No sex, it isn't that kind of show.
Made in Abyss is one that definitely isn't for everyone. It is set in a fantasy world, and follows the story of a young girl who is travelling into a great Abyss in search of her mother. Lots of body horror, and definitely has some extremely questionable content, but a fascinating story and world. It has quite possibly one of the most beautiful/terrifying/alien settings I have ever experienced across any form of media. You may find elements of the story to be extremely disturbing, but you will also have a hard time looking away, and it will definitely be one of the most unique experiences you have ever had. Again, it can be just..... Incredibly messed up at times, and tbh I'm not even sure I'm recommending it to you. But it is a great example of a show that could only be animated. There is absolutely no way to do it justice with a live action film or book.
Last one for now, I could probably go on a lot longer but this'll be enough. It's definitely less of a mainstream recommendation but one of my all time favorites.
Planet With on the surface looks like a mecha show aimed at kids. However, it is one of the most philosophically/religiously dense shows I have ever seen. It follows the story of a young boy who has lost his memories. He now lives with a large anthropomorphic alien cat who transforms into a giant robot to fight "bad guys". Again, can't say much without major spoilers, but all I can say is I thought it was brilliant, but can understand that a lot of people who aren't as interested in philosophy as I am might not get it, because again, on the surface it definitely looks like it's a show just for kids.
Hope you find some of those appealing! If you want a few more recommendations let me know. And please keep in mind, these are all just my opinion. These are all shows that on some level spoke to me about very real feelings, but your mileage may vary.

So when I saw that scene in the 3rd episode with Knives and the music got louder, I immediately knew that I was about to experience a true beauty. A lot of people in the comments are talking about the pacing, and I want to say that I personally enjoy the pacing in Stampede more so than the original anime. In the original, it took a lot longer for the more serious elements of the plot to actually appear, so if the watcher is someone with short attention span, they would probably drop the show, and go watch something else, unless they are really attached to the characters already. They managed to fix that issue in Stampede with just 12 episodes, and I really hope it gets a continuation, so I can see this unique version of the story unfold.

This is much bigger than original was. It's not just retelling, but something else. Than i noticed how Author of Trigun himself mentioned that fans will not see the bigger picture of this project at first, but he can see it, and he can confirm it's real Trigun he always wanted to show.
Yasuhiro Nightow: "It's something that was being developed for a very long time. And really, yesterday was a significant day because of that. But also it's just a start for all the things. I think it's the start of something fantastic and something that a lot of people will like. So fan can just consider this as the start. It's just the start.
So when they were developing this Trigun, I saw that they were taking elements from my comic and expanding it, rearranging it, restructuring it, redesigning it, and adding depth to it. They're trying to raise the quality of the show as well. I thought that there might some changes, but once they took all of the series in and started adapting it onto film, I felt that this is still Trigun. This is Trigun. I want the fans to know is that I really want them to watch this. And after watching, I think that you'll feel the same way as me.
But i can't give a such high rating as 9/10 because it's a prequel and we need to see the real deal that comes next. So it's a solid 7/10 at the moment for me. It's objectively weak during first episodes, so that's totally fair.

3D animation and computer aided animation is not the enemy. And shouldn't be treated as such. When used in conjunction with care and an artistic idea and style it allows for a much higher calibur of production. This had the charm and facial expressions of a 2D drawn animation with the benefits 3D bring like being able to move clothing and hair without costing the animators a ton of effort and time or the studio a ton of money. Much more life as characters don't stand still waiting there action when conversing all the characters are moving. As consumers we are getting a higher quality of visual spectacle recently than ever before it's not a bad thing when it's done with care.

Trigun Stampede, Vash, looks like in his late teens to early twenties. Trigun, Vash original, looked more like in his late twenties to early thirties.
I remembered how Nightow never have up on completing Vash's story. Hope, he make a continuation, after Trigun Stampede's finale.
Vash would make a doting father (hopefully he would had a daughter with Meryl), what happened to Nai after his defeat, will humans find a way to be sustainable. How ridiculous how they never had solar panels considering they had more than two suns.

personally, I thought Stampede was mid, the story wasn't anything that good, nor did I feel invested, but I still finished it cause I felt like I should finish it all, for a prequel, it definitely could've been better.
Strife felt empty as a character, I didn't understand why did they need to even put a mentor for her, I feel that her maturity was cut down for the sake of adding a mentor.
I also don't understand how is it a prequel, since it showed us that vash had the bounty from the beginning, even being named the typhoon, and he (presumably) killed knives, so I'm not even sure it's a prequel anymore, might as well call it a season finale.
maybe I'm looking too deep into it, but when vash was sad, it was boring, i felt it was more focused on his face, rather his emotions.
Good Animation doesn't equal Good Story, that being said, I'm still gonna be waiting for the next implementation.
sorry for pasting my thoughts here, I just wanna express my opinion lol.

I found the hate for this series so bizarre. The animation was always beautiful. I know CGI puts some anime fans off but like, it's so weird to just push off a medium of art simply because of how it's made. Is that not what people do to anime as a whole? Also, if they wanted the original, they could've read either the manga or the 98' anime. I actually did watch the entire 98' manga before I watched Stampede and enjoyed it. However, Stampede seemed to be something completely different, especially from the start. I noticed it was a Prequel when JuLai was mentioned in the first episode and I realized Meryl was younger than she was in the previous adaptation and the original manga.

Also, while the action is awesome, Vash didn't really do anything cool or noteworthy or anything Vash-like (like being all OP while manipulating stuff in the background). Also didn't like how the mystery is gone. With it being KIND OF a Western, the mystery behind the wandering gunman is important IMHO. But that's just me.
But anyway, with it being a weird first-half / prequel amalgamation, I have much higher hopes with the second season. Especially after that awesome last episode when we get the OG hair. The main difference to me from this and the 98 is that the 98 is more grounded as a show. Which is why they made the reveal being this is not earth as a main component of the plot as opposed to Stampede which just starts with it.
Stampede leans more towards Fantasy with all the characters and villains. It tries giving a narrative but wants to show the large scale fights that the manga had so it leans towards that more. Visually it looks nice but narratively it is a bit lacking. I say this show is good if you seen the original or the manga since it kind of adds to it, plot events that a watcher is familiar with and observe how Stampade direction of the show.

What a way to start my anime adventure too. That all being said, after watching a few clips from Stampede here and there I decided to give it a try. Man am I not disappointed. Millions Knives motivation is easily a million fold that of his previous anime's. I will say one thing though, I much preferred the way Wolfwood and Vash bounced off one another in the original anime. Made them feel like 2 sides of the same coin. I'm still hoping for more of a brotherhood to form between the 2 of them in next season like what they had in the original anime but aside from that I love what they have done with the series. I love Trigun so much and even though I've never really read any manga I might have to fold and give it a shot for Trigun's sake. Thank you for your video and insight!

However I felt as if it were incredibly rushed. I really felt that squeezing so many characters, backstory, and sci-fi concepts into 12 episodes was too ambitious and I would've loved it if they had been able to take their time with a longer season. That and I felt the animation quality was inconsistent episode to episode. Still - I loved what we got!

i was never a fan of CGI until watching trigun stampede, it really made me understand that CGI just has a lot more opportunities to offer than classic anime. especially nai's scene in jeneora rock where he created the literal millions of knives. that scene was breathtakingly beautiful and scary at the same time. the CG makes trigun so unique (and the music as well, gosh THE MUSIC) and probably pushed it up into a much better quality level than many other high budget anime.
loved to hear an opinion from someone who has watched and read the entire trigun series. i only found out about it now and i'm truly swept away by this series! i hope the OG fans who "dropped" this because of the hair (lmao) and the cgi can be a little more open minded for the 2023 trigun. the design fits our current generation of anime fans i believe and remakes shouldn't be compared to the OGs like that after all. its sad to expect it to be the exactly the same. i hope that trigun 2023 didn't "flop" so the producers know that many new fans appreciate this anime!
its an amazing show which not only opened the genre of CGI to me, but also scifi and space western as well. its a first for me and i truly love it :)

Then I saw what he DID with said 22LR and my suspension of disbelief went completely out the window. To me, what makes Trigun Trigun encompassed in the 98’ theme song and not having that POP coming from Vash just makes me feel like I’m watching Batman with no tool belt or Spider-Man with no webs.

Although the original soundtrack has some weakness (like not having a good theme for Knives), it was so much more raw and characterful. It felt way more appropriate for a desert world that was both worn out and still fighting daily to survive. The new soundtrack with its lush orchestration was beautiful but too polished and just not as good a fit for the setting. Still, that Stampede soundtrack has some bangers.

We know about the colony ships, we know the twins' origin immediately, the Gung-ho Guns start showing up first thing, we learn exactly what plants are in an info dump, Vash's mechanical arm is obvious & out there, Vash's gun is a normal gun, the entire meta-plot is immediately and obviously apparent. Any time a character shows up you can be sure they're going to monologue their entire backstory & motivation either in the same episode or less than a single episode later. I like side stories, I like monster of the week episodes, I like it when media takes its time. Basically that the air of weird mystery that I loved from previous iterations isn't present. The secondary thing that bugs me is how floaty & weightless all the movement feels. Every single character moves like a marionette floating on strings.

@@chickenjoe8049 You understand that by that logic you can make a bible pseudo prequel where Jesus is a young murderous pervert with delusions of grandeur, dictatorship and world conquest... And if anyone objects you say "Hey, just a prequel man! He'll grow into himself soon enough!". This kind of bullshit is just called a spinoff, if not outright fanfic, CRAPPY fanfic too. And well, if its so explained, tell me his reasoning of being a pacifist then. Go on.

@@mkzhero You realize Vash's portrayal in Stampede is based on the manga right? Vash in 98 Trigun is much goofier and a sex pest. Although Vash's portrayal isn't a 1:1 from the manga, he is still characterized similarly so your point of trying to compare it to a young murderous pervert Jesus makes no fucking sense as that is a complete 180 on his character unlike Vash.
Vash has plenty of reason to help humans. It is shown multiple times that Vash feels extreme guilt over his role in the crash landing of the ships. In addition, the ones who have shown him the most compassion in his entire life have been humans. Rem, who mothered him and instilled in him the virtues and hopes he carries on; Luida, who reinforced those virtues while raising him out of his hole of suicidal ideation; Meryl, whose plucky journalistic tendencies led her to empathize with Vash and ultimately help break him out of the vegetative state (pun not intended) that Knives forcibly put him under. Even folks like Brad and Wolfwood at least come to respect and care for him, and even hypocritically adopting facets of his worldview and growing as a result: Brad learning to trust across species lines, and Wolfwood understanding through Livio's near-recovery that saving people with no strings attached is possible.
Vash knows the truth better than anyone that everyone has the capacity for good, and that everyone has the capacity to change for the better; rather, it's the circumstances of one's systems and environment that forces things like exploitation and the desire for revenge. And it's not just sheer naivete either; the show writers clearly display that Vash's philosophy actually works in the first two episodes when people just sit back and take a chance to resolve their situations peacefully or remember the humanity in one another. After the goofy shenanigans are all said and done, the Jeneora Rock gang and the Nebraska family are all communing together in the bar with the town's plant safe, sound, and healthy. It's only when Knives shows up to enact genocide that things go horribly wrong.
Vash's struggles with humans lie in misunderstandings that are more often than not sorted out when people actually get to know him, or from environmental circumstances that may force a betrayal that otherwise wouldn't happen. But none of this is an indictment on humanity as a whole (after all; they're not the ones who crashed the ships on a desert planet), which is why Vash cannot hold a grudge. That's why Knives was so frustrated with Vash. He just sees his younger brother torturing himself for no reason. But for Vash the memories he built with Rem, Home, and all the people he's met are more important to him than all the suffering he's gone through. He doesn't mind if the end result is he gets the short end of the stick. So Knives is trying to save Vash from himself and Vash wants to keep Knives from ending humanity. That's what makes the story and their dynamic interesting. It is totally fine if you don't like the way it has been done, but to say his motivations and character aren't explained and that it is a "crappy fanfic" is complete bs

@@chickenjoe8049 "Sex pest"? While not wanting women to see his scarred, ruined body (which he specifically states)? I think you should reconsider your words and what they mean. He hits on everything that moves in the first half, true, but idk what it has to do with 'sex'. But aside that part, he's FAR closer to the manga than this pitiful fanfic, and yes, he's indeed very goofy in the manga, the 98 anime just has more of those moments because it made a lot of stuff up, but here's the thing, it WOULD fit his character if his manga self would be in those situations. NO he wasn't depressed all the time in the manga, he kept being a chatterbox and cracking jokes at all but the most dire times, which wasn't often. And yes, a depressed, quiet, boring emo IS indeed a 180 on his manga character.
Having guilt is not enough reason to not want to save people from a villain by killing said villain. More so, even if it was enough of an explanation, it only works for HUMANS, but not plants and bugs (he refused to eat that bug when Wolfwood passed it to him). What virtues and hopes DOES he carry exactly..? Rem doesn't really do anything like that on camera. Meryl's role in getting Vash out of being brainwashed is wrong, its shown to be Rem's last memory that is the trigger for him to break out. Vash knows everyone's capacity for good and change? The original did. Here? Its not demonstrated at all, nor explained, unlike the manga and 98 anime that go IN DEPTH into his ideology and beliefs. And its done ALL OVER the show too, not 'the first two episodes', which frankly is a JOKE of a setup and character development for his pacifism, because both of the fact its very little time, and the fact MOST of that time was used on entirely different things.
The pace and lack of appropriate music for anything also cheapens the few things you could consider somewhat fitting to at least start exploring that direction, there was only one good proper tune in the show (outside op and ed which i'm not counting, only on air time music) which is Knives-es theme, and even that's overused like hell. Meryl isn't even present. Wolfwood is some Jaded retard who only cares about the orphanage, except when the world's ending, then he suddenly doesn't care. The show does nothing but drop infinite exposition and shove it up your throat 24/7... Idk how YOU can call it anything but shitty fanfic tier garbage. Like, i can literally break down episode 1 and how its 70+% just pure exposition and nonsensical garbage, and the WHOLE show is like that.

I was new to Trigun, the original was shown on and off on tv dubbed in my language and I had no interest, thought I'd give this version a chance since I know the original had a cult following. Episode 3 rolled out, I was already sold on the show from episode one though, with the quality of animation, cell-shading and character design. But episode 3... THAT scene plays and I hear the OST in the background, Millions Knives, and I got goosebumps. I knew this was my favorite anime of the season from that point on and subsequent episodes until the very end proved me right. Looking so much forward to season 2!!!

This was better than the OG for me. Story felt more contained, each episode escalated one after the other, added in some manga only characters like Livio and Elendira and the finale was just amazing. Orange studio has convinced me that 3d character designs can be done well. This and The First Slam Dunk. I did not gave high hopes for the this series but I was proven wrong. It's the best anime show i've seen this year.

I feel like we watched different shows haha too each their own I guess. The build up of the wacky stories and characters leading into the greatest tonal shift in anime history was a master class, the slower pacing and mystery > the speed dial rush job of this weird quasi prequel/reimagining any day of the week. Really disliked the redesigns too, the ost and knives was good though
