BR Class 15 D8233: The first engine startup (19/06/2010)

- For a long time, the Class 15 Preservation Society, based at the East Lancashire Railway, has been engaged in a project to restore the only surviving class 15 diesel loco D8233 to working order.
Saturday 19th June 2010 marked a glorious milestone in progress, when D8233's sixteen cylindered Paxman 16YHXL engine was started up for the first time. These clips show the final checks being made, before the engine springs to life; loads of static thrash and clag ensured that the startup was a great success. Although there is still a long way to go before restoration is completed, the loco is making sound progress.

I remember the occasional BTH Type1 loco making it up to Doncaster in the mid to late 1960's.
They were rare beasts and always good to see.

As I type this, this startup happened longer ago than the locomotive actually ran in service, under 9 years!

The last 15, maybe if someone did enough work it could be rebranded as a Class 15 1/2 since it and the 16 were pretty much one in the same type of engine.

Debonair Extraordinaire Ruston Hornsby, Paxman, Ruston Paxman, Paxman, mirrlees, English Electric, GEC became part of the same company which is now part of MAN and was owned by Alstom at one point.

Sounds very like a Class 20.

excellent bettter to see her roaring than be on the scrap heap, wouldn't you agree, and with the the paxman valenta's now gone a new one (old one) arises from the ashes :)

what's happened with it since? haven't heard any updates at all.
As far as I'm aware, the restoration is still ongoing. Keep in mind though, that it still takes a great deal of time, money and effort into bringing her back into service.

Ive fired a steam engine up a 1 in 21 gradient and we didnt make as much smoke as this!!! :P nice video dude
How's this project coming along? It's been a while since this film was shot.
Presumably, she's coming on nicely, slow but steady. Don't forget, these sort of projects take a very long time (taking into account funding and labour)... Hopefully it will all be worth it when she's eventually up and running...

White smoke, to me, says unburned diesel. I'm guessing cold engine and a need to set it up. Making sure the engine is runable?
g8ymw Yeah, just trying the engine out. It'll be a good few years before D8233 is fully functional again, but meantime, this was a good taster of what to expect when the task is gradually completed...

It kinda sounds like a chopped up class 20
Ironically, the Class 15's engine was being jump-started by 20087 (at the time), so you're right in one respect... :D
@@DavidHennessey1984 yeah but I saw in one old video from 1957 of the doyen of the class D8200 at Euston they showed the Motor inside the engine room and the sound sounded exactly like the class 20 it's on RUclips somewhere I can send u the link if youd like
