I wonder if this is the sound of Nick "not getting it". This song contains many different time signatures and changes that Nick had a hard time following, which is why they brought in Jeff Porcaro for the final take.
Mother, do you think they'll drop the bomb? Mother, do you think they'll like this song? Mother, do you think they'll try to break my balls? Ooh-ah, Mother, should I build the wall? Mother, do you think she's good enough… For me? Mother, do you think she's dangerous… For me? Mother, will she tear your little boy apart? Ooh-ah, Mother, will she break my heart? Hush now, baby, baby, don't you cry Mamma's gonna make all of your nightmares come true Mamma's gonna put all of her fears into you Mamma's gonna keep you right here, under her wing She won't let you fly, but she might let you sing Mamma's gonna keep baby cosy and warm Ooh babe, ooh babe, ooh babe Of course, Mamma's gonna help build the wall Ooh babe, don't you cry Mamma's gonna check out all your girlfriends for you Mamma won't let anyone dirty get through Mamma's gonna burn all of your pornography She'll watch where you hear and she'll watch what you see Mamma's gonna keep baby healthy and clean Ooh babe, ooh babe, ooh babe Mamma's gonna clean up all of your dreams Mother, did it need to be so high
From what I can gather, these demos, are still unavailable for the most part, in the immersion box set, on Programme 3 of the 2nd disc of demos includes the first 6 songs from these demos. Wish they would've put the whole thing, these sound great
Wow, I thought Nick really couldn't play this at all. But after hearing this, the final beat was actually mostly from him. Yeah, the 3/4 and 4/4 beat was from him, Jeff just correcting the 5/4 part and give a little touch and accent here and there. I think he was never unskilled but rather uninspired to get the correct beat. I think Nick actually can do this if he had the proper time then, because in that year he was busy with his motoracing. Or maybe the reason he got uninspired was because the working environment in the studio then, if you ever work in a creative profession you'll know this thing affect your playing. Because in the different working environment, in his side projects, he can play and even compose music in weird time signature and time signature changing. But that's just my opinion and assumption, feel free to CMIIW
@@RickCostello well of course not, Jeff Porcaro is one of the best session drummer, I rank him up there with Terry Bozzio, Chad Wackerman, and Jim Keltner.
Very different from the finished product. They ended-up stripping it down for more effect. Think of how much greater effect Gilmour's voice has as the mother without all the creepy synth
the problem is that Nick Mason isn't able to play the alternating time signatures, this is not a straight 4/4 ;) In the end they had Jeff Porcaro (Toto's drummer) to play as a session drummer on the actual studio recording. This means that on the album Nick Mason isn't playing the drums on Mother..
@Mr. Flapjack Presents He did pull Money off somehow, but Mason indeed always did struggle with weird meter changes. There are a ton of Pink Floyd songs that don't feature Mason as a drummer because of that. Like See-Saw, Remember a Day, Two Suns in the Sunset, Dogs of War, Sorrow, Sysyphus among others.
@Mr. Flapjack Presents I think they had limited time schedule as the album will have its deadline soon and Nick had a hard time grasping for the tempo so they called Jeff Porcaro in and he did it in one take
@taariqtaariq I would not rank Nick Mason as one of the great drummers (he's better tthan Ringo Starr), but to be fair Roger Waters was never great on creating melodies for the band to play with, Often the music can be as stiff as a military march. Some of these demos sound funky in a very un-Floyd way. Young Lust is great in it's original. I've listened to it several times now and prefer it over the album version.
Ringo Starr, a great drummer? A good one, maybe, but I wouldn't call it great. Nothing to out shine any one, If you want to talk great Steward Copeland from The Police, would be a great pick to start with.
"Mother's gonna clean up all your dreams." Wow. Should have left that line in.
Ooooh loving the chorus pedal use after Gilmour's solo
It's sound like a David Bowie songs...

It seems you are right.
thank god jeff played!!! nick is lost in this version.
@@cristianoisabel5585It's a demo and Nick isn't lost at all.

No shame in being second to Porcaro.

5/4 would drive anyone crazy.

Mason just could not get those changes in time signature at all. How the hell is that?
Because it's a demo and there are done weird changes. This often had other people play parts.

Roger Waters on Molly
Roger, you're Pink Floyd
is s little wierd versión... it seems to me that drums and guitar have their own individual tempo anda rithm
