  • Here is John, I think that's his first name Berrington's classic old White/Freightliner cabover arriving at Truckin' For Kids 2018 with 852 cubic inches of 12V71 abuzzin' under the cab. Looks like the original owner decided to splurge on buying the 12-cylinder Detroit Diesel, but forgot to check the box for the power steering too! This was what trucking was back in the day. Shot at the Truckin' For Kids Truck Show in Irwindale, California on Saturday October 6th., 2018.

Many people complained about them being rough to ride, less fuel efficient, uncomfortable, less aerodynamic, and harder to access the engine. They went out of style. They were popular 30-35 years ago tho.

Had more than my share of cabovers back in the day, including running sleeper team in a Mack Cruiseliner-leaf spring suspension, manual steering. It’s probably easier to get to sleep rolling down the side of a mountain than it was in the bunk of that thing. One regret is that I never had the opportunity to drive a “Screamin’” Detroit.

The Euclids 6-53s screamed every morning and the occasional 4-53 in a 1900 Oliver on the dyno. Once in a while, a Cracker Box turned off one highway to the other and you could count 17 or so wails from that one. Wasn't Surround Sound, but it was Detroits echoing their answers across the hills. Such days of glory!!!

I see small clips on the news sometimes but still hard to imagine what it's like now. No matter how much rain and flooding they had government always claimed they were in a drought. Farmers were getting cut off, prices were sky high. The more water the central valley could save the more they could sell to so cal at even higher prices. And taxes! The oldest truck I ever drove was a GMC crackerbox cab over 1966, and the newest was an international LT 2018 . I enjoyed most all of them, except the older trucks were pretty cold in the winter and hot in the summer. The newer trucks were warm in the winter snow cool in the summer, so that made them more comfortable. Plus newer trucks had air ride cab, and suspension, that a smoothed out the ride a bunch too.

Trump NEVER encouraged anyone to break the law, he very specifically said, protest PEACEFULLY. He never told anyone to to kill anyone, unlike maxzine Walter's who told people to hound Republicans anywhere, and everywhere you see them. Or biden saying he wanted to take Trump behind a gym , like he thought he could beat Trump up. That I would have paid money to see that fight. Like I said just keep on supporting biden, and be proud of what he is doing to our country. Then when we turn into Venezuela, or Cuba, you can wonder what happened.

And I've known some old timers to cut power steering belts so they could get more 'road feel'. I drove an old DM that had a coal box on it that had Ross steering with a double booster. The steering was like spinning a cue ball on a pool table but I got used to it...........eventually.

Why? Yes they look cool but when aerodynamics is a major factor in fuel economy and fuel economy is a major factor in making a profit very few businesses are going to run a truck that costs several thousand dollars more a year just to look cool. Same with a conventional classic truck that gets 1 mpg less than a modern design. w900's and 379's will be as rare as cabovers in the years to come sadly to say.

Before I get hate, I love these engines, they’re awesome. BUT... why so many cylinders? When you multiply 12 X 71 it’s less displacement than a Cummins ISX (6 cyl) why make a 12 cylinder engine? Just about all industrial diesels today are 6 cyl...even back then, the other companies made 6 cyl, DD was the only one making 8, 12 for highway tractors
