I bought TM a couple of days ago and was looking for a good and clear playtrough video to help me understand the rules. Your video really helped! Was really fun to watch! Thanks!
That’s awesome! I’m glad it was helpful! Yeah, this game is GREAT! It’s just kind of obnoxious to learn.... I hope you kick some Martian butt!
Thanks for this and the setup video. I also took the plunge to play it solo because of you. This is my first solo game ever! Thanks again for all the time and effort you placed into these videos.
You’re extremely welcome! It was tons of fun to make! How did your game turn out?
Tom Teaches I won on turn 2 (or turn 13 for normal people haha). Really great game! It's an engine building wet dream. The amount of plays you can make each generation gets ridiculous. Can't wait to play it with a group.
That’s awesome! Congrats man!
I'm very late to the game here - but this was awesome. I'm a fairly new board gamer (though have been a video gamer for decades) and I just picked this one up as a friend who will be at the next gaming con i go to says this is a fave for him. So I'd like to play with him there. SUPER helpful to watch this all the way through. I'm excited to table it tonight!
I know this has been up a while but.....just wanted to say thank you. I'm an old(er) guy who sometimes struggles learning rules. I only play solo and got this game recently. This video is an enjoyable and helpful watch, so thank you.
Thank you so much! That is really nice to hear and I’m so glad you watched
man your so fun to watch. great explanation of game and love the fact you don't edit the crap put if your videos. love the depth, even shuffling the cards lol. subscribed!!
Well dang! That was such a nice comment to read today! I really appreciate it. If there is one thing you can bet on it’s that I leave a lot of crap in my videos 😂 but hopefully it’s entertaining enough. Welcome to the family! I hope you stick around and find other videos you like...
Thanks for the video. I had done extremely poorly the first 3 times playing the solo version in the app - I watched a few generations of this video and was able to beat solo mode the next time playing
Nice! I'm so glad! I bought the app, but still haven't played through it..... I kinda suck at digital gaming....
Great video to show how solo game is played... I was thinking I could only perform 1-2 actions per generation and was failing miserably after 8 generations. Despite the cashier errors, the thought process and gameplay were tremendously helpful
I’m so glad! And it seems you weren’t the first to make that action-mistake. I’ve heard that a couple of times. And yeah, 🤦♂️ Cashier mistakes is kind of my thing, I make them A LOT. But I’m really glad you watched the video and extra glad you took the time to comment! I really need to get this game back out.... I’ve since upgraded some components and got Prelude, and really want to play it....
@@TomTeachesGames subscribing to your channel and gonna watch Wingspan and Gizmo next... these are games I'm waiting to play/own
Thanks Tom for the lengthy video, it helped me so much to get started! Greeting from the Netherlands!
Greetings!!!!! I hope it was a fun watch!
by Gen 3 you were 33 MCr short, seems like you stated counting the Gold cubes as 20 when you got money but 10 when you spend it, you ended one heat shy since you forgot to raise temp when oxygen go tto 8
I don't understand when the card says put 3 microbes on another card. Put what exactly? 3 bronze cubes? Then what happens?
Well example... but if you review... there are a lot of errors. I think that you forget get serveral oxygen levels, pay for projects... and so on. But playing alone in a game with a lot of options is complex don't forget anything. Great video to understand game's mechanics.
Thanks Ruben! And yes, I'm very very very good at forgetting a lot of things.... But it's all in good fun. Thanks again!
A nice playthrough, well shot and edited.
At 1:58:33, you can already play Permafrost Extraction. You are at -12 C, the card req is -8 C. Your adaptation technology blue card effect allows you play cards two STEPS different (not two degrees), in other words 4 degrees.
At 2:15:01, you don't get to convert heat after the end of generation 14. You produce, then you have one last chance to convert PLANTS into greenery but you can't convert anything else. (since conversion always happens during the action phase, before production. the exception is the one last plant conversion, which wouldn't have counted towards your oxygen anyways)
At 1:59:45 could have raised temp once to -10C (saving 14 credits) and, using Adaptive Technology ("-2 steps" in temp [-6C down to -10C]-- note: it's not -2 degrees), been able to play Tundra Farming (16 credits)
Did you raise the temp when you hit 8 oxygen?
Hmmm..... I thought so? But I'm not sure -- and without a time stamp it might take me some time to dig in. But I'll do my best! Thanks for asking :D

Hmmmm... that just linked the video. If you can just tell me the time, I’ll hop right on it! Thanks a ton man!
1:39:27 if that helps.
Missed it by that much.... Thanks for the play through.
You’re so welcome! I’ve really been craving this game recently. I haven’t played it since I picked up 3D pieces and the Prelude expansion.... so I really do need to get it back out.
At 40:43, you missed that Arctic Algae activates when "anyone" places a water tile (including yourself). This would be huge if you played it. (equivalent to approximately 2 free greeneries).
Thanks you!
You’re selling me on this game.
Just an FYI at 1:20:40 it looks like your forgot to pay 8 for your Moss.
Do you really start with one production in each area for the solo game. Other solo run throughs start at zero this is a crucial difference.
You do not - I think I mentioned that in the subtitles. In the solo mode you don’t start with any production. I just wanted a shot at winning while on camera 😀
Thanks for replying so quickly especially on such an old video. So far I am getting murdered by this game but I am beginning to understand the basics.
You’re welcome! I also struggle a ton to win.... which was why I started with those productions. In my brain, once I win with starting productions of 1, I’ll take them away.
Thank you for this Demo ! really helped me :-)
Greetings from Portugal !
Greetings from the US! Thanks for watching, and I’m so glad it helped!
Picked this up with all expansions on the Turmoil expansion Kickstarter, so thought I'd give this a watch (with Klingon subtitles enabled).
I don't claim to have caught everything (I was only watching with half an eye) but the things I did spot:
40:48 Arctic Algae's effect triggers whenever anyone, including you places an ocean tile (a few more times later you describe red-bordered effects as "another player" rather than "any player"). Also, as you mention later, it's an effect, not a cost
59:08 Placing Greenery next to Ocean should have gained 2 credits.
1:00:00 You cut from moving the generation marker down to 9 to moving the generation marker down to 10 (I think I remember you moving it down to 10 for the previous generation already). Either way, something went wrong there. Also, you forgot to clear the Space Elevator's action at the end of the previous generation, though that would only have made a difference if you remembered to use it.
1:39:33 Didn't raise the temperature when you reached that O2 level
1:47:22 Forgot to raise O2 for the new greenery tile.
Between not using the Space Elevator a couple of times, and short-changing yourself on income several times (I didn't note the timestamps, but I think I spotted you being 5 short one time, and 10 short another), you probably had enough missed resources to have got the last missing heat bump.
Some more pervasive rules errors I picked up:
There's no rules requirement to place greenery tiles next to your cities specifically - in a multiplayer game, you'll usually want to for scoring purposes, but it's not a requirement, and in solo in particular, you only need to put them next to any of your existing tiles to get the best immediate bonus.
In solo, at the end of generation 14, you do, indeed, do the final production, but you only get to convert plants into greenery tiles, and you don't get any O2 nor TR from them - you don't get to convert heat, and you need to have already won to count as winning.
Incidentally, the Prelude expansion introduces an alternate solo victory condition - winning if you reach TR63 before the end of the game - and introduces a new Standard Project to solo - Buffer Gas - spend 16M€ to gain 1TR.
Thanks! I feel like there is still so much for me to discover in the base.... I only have the Prelude expansion, and haven't felt like I miss any of the other expansions -- not to mention there is no more room in my box....
@@TomTeachesGames I've got everything snugly in the base-game box, though the insert it came with is more of a liner than a proper insert.
Of course, there's no requirement to get the expansions - I haven't actually played with anything beyond the base game yet. General opinion seems to be that Preludes is the best, Hellas & Elysium (the alternate maps, with their own Milestones and Awards) is good variety, and Colonies, Venus Next and Turmoil all get mixed reviews for significant changes to the game, with Colonies better received than the other two.
IMO the white cube should be placed on and count up from 1, and a colored cube should be placed on 14. The book also says beginner corporations get to keep their 10 cards for free, although their own example plays the way you did.
Excellent point about the cube! That was the biggest brain-melt for me.... and I don't know why....
@58:50 should you have added 2M$ from placing the greenery tile next to the ocean?
Im not trying to nitpick, just learning the game. My friends and I had a rough start earlier this week so I have been busy studying the game to see how we can move along better next week :)
No worries about that! I have just been super busy and haven't gotten around to looking yet...
And, as I watched that part right now, I feel badly, but it has been so long since I've played the game that I can't answer this definitively. But I THINK you're probably right!
Two quick questions. Don't you get $2 per water tile adjacent to new tile placements? Such as that last city you placed, which I think should have yielded you $4. And second, I think the solo rules state you need to meet the three global requirements *before* the production phase on generation 14. Meaning, those last few bumps in oxygen and heat wouldn't have counted. Am I reading that correctly?
Hey Edward! We are both right....
With respect to your first question: You are 100% right! I had been so good about that throughout the game... but missed those 4 credits. I went ahead and annotated that in the Klingon subtitles. Huge thanks for the super sharp eye there!
With respect to the solo rules... I think I'm still right (ignoring the insanity of changing between counting up and counting down). The book says "In order to win you need to complete terraforming before *the end* of generation 14." So, assuming I got my numbers right in the swapping, I think I did that correctly.
Of course I may still be wrong -- so please correct me if I am! But that's my best understanding of your questions. Thanks a ton for watching and participating :-D
Hi Tom. I believe according to the game rules, page 8 states that the last stage of a generation is the Production Phase. The rules in Game End (page 12) state that after the final production phase, players can convert plants into greenery for extra points, but not to raise the oxygen again (as all the global parameters would have already been reached, triggering the Game End). And the Solo Variant (page 13) states "After generation 14, you may convert plants into greenery tiles, following normal rules but without raising the oxygen...". Plus, it says just before that sentence that in order to win, you need to "you need to complete terraforming (i.e making the three global parameters reach their goal) before the end of generation 14", which we earlier saw on page 8 was the Production Phase. So, unfortunately, you can't increase oxygen or temperature after that final production (although it would make sense, as in reality you should be able to just release the heat into the atmosphere).
I understand your frustration (as well as enjoyment of the game), as I've play solo several times and it's so hard to win. I finally won a solo game; I had 45 megacredits but needed 46 for standard projects (2 asteroids for 2 temperature increases & 1 aquifer for last ocean tile). Luckily, placing the ocean tile next to another ocean tile gave me 2 MC which meant I now had 29 MC for 2 asteroids (2x14=28), so I squeaked by with just 1 MC left at the very end.
Thanks so much for playthrough.
You don’t discard the red cards because they have symbols that might be relevant during play, right?
Oh dang.... you could be right. It's been SO long, I would have to get the game out and look at the rules...
Great play through!
Thank you so much!
@1:39:03.. you say "I can't place the greenery tiles...;" but the rules say you "must place greenery tiles next to a tile you own" (they don't have to be cities)-- so you could place next to other greenery tiles you own which would give you five options at this point (including one next to two oceans and give you two plants- Juventae Chasma). [I think you mentioned this also earlier in the video]--- and missed the "increase temp" bonus for reaching 8% oxygen ;)
Thanks so much! I'm not sure why.... but this comment had been flagged as possible spam (something I didn't know was a "thing" since I almost always view and interact with comments on my phone... it's while I was my computer annotating that I noticed a "spam" tab.... anyway, I just wanted to say thanks! And I just saw this.... and that you are not spam. :D
Yeah, the actual rule is that greenery tiles must go next to tiles you own _if possible_, but if you can't place adjacent to your existing tiles, you can place them anywhere (except reserved spaces, ie oceans or Noctis City). So, yes, Tom could have placed the greenery next to his existing greenery (and would have been required to) but if he couldn't, he'd still have been allowed to place the greenery.
Actually I just played the solo easy mode, it actually took 7 - 9 turn to win if resources is managed well
Dang!!!! You're freaking good!
@@TomTeachesGames if normal mode 0 generation each pick an early corporation, don't have to spend $ on keeping alot of card unless it's really good, increase the heat first if got any $ so you can get extra $ from TeraRating & that beginning 2x heat generation bonus. Then u have high chance finish the game on turn 8 or 10
Great video .... explained how to solo this and I’m about to give it a try. Subscribe incoming 😀
Wahoo!!!!! Welcome to the family!
Late to the show... but thanks for the great play through
Him not using the space elevator every turn is so frustrating!
When you used the robot to copy the card, you forgot to add a city on the board
Thank you!
Very helpful video
Thank yo use much!
Thank you so much for such a video. It has been really helpful, and i wanted to thank you. You have my suscription!
Also, in 1:31:50 you had to obtain 39. You removed the last 1 cube, but instead of adding 40, you only added 34. Am i right?
Kind of the same happened to you in 1:41:22 when you forgot 10! I hope they are not cutting all this money in you work! :-p
You are TOTALLY right! 🤦♂️ I was truly the worst cashier in my retail job.... they put me on there one day and then realized the huge error... never again...
also at 1:08:42 when increasing two energy you said correctly "pay 22", but then just took out two gold cubes (20) and forgot two additional copper; but you made up for it at 1:14:00 by not taking those 2 MegaCredits for placing ocean next to ocean :P
another fun video !!
Thanks man! Glad you feel that way :-)
He explains all about gaining credits after placing something next to a water tile. Then, places a green tile next to a water tile and doesn't give himself credit lol
Titanium white😂😂😂😂, too good
Shoutout to the Little Engine That Could @1:30:17
🚂 😂😂😂😂
Can you play as many cards as you want or max 2 per generation?
You can play as many cards as you are able to and/or want to per generation.
@@TomTeachesGames You sure? I thought playing a card counts as an action, and max 2 actions per turn, hence 2 cards per turn.
Well yes, for sure. But when you are playing solo, you take one turn after the other. So you can consider the fact that you are taking one turn at a time.... but you just keep doing that over and over until you pass.
@@TomTeachesGames Right my bad I finally found that in the rule book.. the game went from being crippling difficult to a breeze! Lol.. maybe I just got the right cards but I finished it in 13 days and only played the last day to just create a couple more land tiles for points. Definitely needs more playthroughs before I label it an easy game though.
Well dang! I’m jealous! I have yet to win it solo...... but no worries! I make a million mistakes on this channel....
@1:00:00 You lowered the Generation to 9, like it should have been, but then the video jumped and you were back on 10. LOL CHEATER!
At the end of the generation it was corrected back to 8. SO I guess I'm sorry lol
its too bad this video was done half wrong, being a solo game you production values for all 6 resources start at zero and you tm rating is the only thing to start at 14 to help you generate money at the start of the game
Yup! This is one of the earliest videos I made.... and it's easy to make mistakes.
The starting resources is an intentional decision I made to help give myself a boost, knowing I often lose solo mode often.... I decided to follow the "starter" rules for a multi-player game.
But hey, hopefully people can learn from my mistakes. Because I make plenty. 😂
