For reference... No, it was definitely not common for highschoolers to have a cell phone at that point. In 1997, cell phones were for people who owned their own businesses and people who needed to contact their children at home when working long hours. Lol it wasn't even common for most parents to have one at that point in time

    3 things:
    1. No one ever talks about how Kenny dies a hero. He doesn't hesitate to jump up and try and save Randy when he thinks Randy's in trouble, he hesitates when he sees the door and remembers the delay. He then uses his dying breath to point out how Sidney can get away. Justice for Kenny! RIP
    2. I watch a lot of Scream reacts, saw it in theaters opening weekend in 96. No one, including me, ever notices the dolls hanged with a noose in the attic. This movie goes out of its way to tell you who done it. It's one of those movies you can rewatch 100 times and still find something new.
    3. I love that the survivors all broke a rule Randy states at the party. Gale says "I'll be right back" to Kenny, Randy drinks and Sid does the deed. Brilliant writing to subvert the genre.

Knowing the background of how they marketed the movie is huge. They asked Drew Barrymore to be the star of the franchise and she pushed to be the opening kill instead of playing Sidney because she said it would be more impactful. They gave her the opening kill character but marketed the movie as though she was the star, so everyone walked into the theatre thinking they were watching a Drew horror movie and were shocked. It completely revamped and revitalized the horror genre. The impact can't be understated. You guys should really watch the rest of the films as a reaction as well.

“Fred” the janitor was played by director Wes Craven, who wrote and directed the original Nightmare on Elm Street.

    • @davidpuerto1619

Adding to the point of Wes Craven creating A Nightmare on Elm Street there was a slight dig at that franchise at the beginning of the movie. When Casie is talking to the killer and guesses his favorite movie was Nightmare the killer says that he liked that one because it was scary and her response was "Well the first one was but the rest all suck." Wes Craven had only directed the first movie until he returned to the franchise about a decade later with New Nightmare.

One that’s a little obvious is when Tatum and Sidney are talking about her mom’s killer and Tatum says she sounds like a Wes Carpenter flick. And at the beginning of the movie, Casey’s dad tells her mom to go to the MacKenzies which is what Laurie Strode told the kids to do in Halloween.

So, idk if ya guy pick this series back up down the road. But it’s not so much THE slasher movie. It’s more like the movie that reinvented horror, this movie was and still is super meta to horror movies, and at the time in the 90’s, everything was Jason or Freddy or a rip off of that style of slasher, and Wes Craven, the man who created A nightmare on Elm Street, being the horror genius that he was, got together with a writer for teenage MRV drama show and made Scream, a satire of not only of horror movies, but the entire horror industry as a whole.
It truly is one of the best horror franchises of all time, and every ounce of scream 1 and 4 are divine brilliance drawn straight from the beautifully twisted mind of Wes Craven. The rest are great too, 5 especially imo, but those 2 movies changed horror movies forever

The original will always be the best, ghostface was at his prime , and the introduction of the best final girl Sidney Prescott with the meta nature of the movie feeling so refreshing having ppl know the rules of the horror genre to survive and subvert expectations especially having 2 killers instead of one to explain how ghostface can move around so fast. Couple things.
    1. Matthew Lillard being hit by the phone was an accident. Skeet Ulrich had so much fake blood on his hands that the phone slipped and Lillard went with it.
    2. The scream from the second umbrella stab was very real. On the first stab, Neve hit the padding under his shirt, where she was supposed to. The second stab, she missed and hit a surgery scar on Skeet's chest.

Hey guys! I watch horror movies all year round and grew up on all the classic ones like this. One of the clues that Stu is the killer is that he and Tatum were basically inseparable the first half of the movie; he asks her to get him a beer at the party, she never comes back and he never wondered about her- even when he went to get himself a beer later. You were right abt the Wes (craven) John (carpenter)combo and yep Gail always becomes everyone's favorite (along w Dewey and Sydney of course). Courtney Cox who plays her purposely wanted to play a b*tch because everyone knew her as "Monica" from "Friends" where she played a nice girl- and Gail does evolve a bit in Part 2. Great reaction, you should watch the entire franchise- it doesn't disappoint.

@Raggedy Pack Also I think it is important to note…ALL OF THE PROMOTIONAL MATERIAL FOR THIS MOVIE HAD DREW BARRYMORE FRONT AND CENTER. Drew Barrymore was the blonde woman in the opening scene she was America’s sweetheart and has been famous since she was a child in E.T.
Anyways because Drew Barrymore was so famous and was front and center on the poster and in the trailer people assumed she was the main character/final girl. So when she died in the first 12 minutes people lost their minds in a good way. Rightfully so.

Fun fact 2: Billy wasn't actually supposed to throw the phone at Stu towards the end.
Fun fact 3: In the beginning, when Casey was talking to the killer and she said the first Nightmare on Elm Street was good but the rest sucked, that line was put in by Kevin Williamson(the screenwriter of Scream) because up to that point Wes Craven had only direct 1 of the 3 or 4.
Fun fact 4: Scream was marketed where Drew Barrymore was front and center with the rest of the cast.

At 28:05-28:07 the reporter who asked Sydney saying we have a right to know is Linda Blair who played Regan in The Exorcist. The Principal? The Fonz himself Henry Winkler from Happy Days and Barry. The shot of Winkler’s frozen eye is an homage to Psycho. Courtney Cox(Friends,Dirt) actually married, had a daughter , and later divorced Dewey(David Arquette) who comes from an acting family. His sister Patricia is an Oscar winner, Rosanna was in the wacky Cronenberg film CRASH, and RIP Alexis Arquette who started early in She’s A Beauty video. I believe there is a cameo with Director Wes Craven as a Janitor looking like Freddy Krueger too. Sydney’s bf was also in the horror film The Craft. The “Shaggy” character was also in horror films Serial Mom and 13 Ghosts. Rose McGowan(garage door kill) did Jawbreaker, dated Marilyn Manson, and did Machete,Grindhouse: Planet Terror/Death Proof. Hitchcock did a film based on real killers(Leopold and Loeb) called ROPE with Jimmy Stewart. The phone scene was an ad lib which was really funny by Matthew Lillard!

Fun fact about Rodger l jackson aka ghostface: drew Barrymore was the reason he was cast. Originally, she was going to be read lines by someone, and the killers voice would be casted and dubbed in later. But she wanted a voice actor instead to add authenticity to her performance. So they had an open casting call, and Rodger was hired. The plan was to have Rodger read the lines to drew and then find the true voice later and dub over rodger. But rodger really impressed the filmmakers, and he was casted as the voice of ghostface permanently. It also started the tradition of actually making the calls during filming instead of faking it and dubbing in the voice later. Every phone call in the franchise is real and Roger is actually on set, calling the actor off screen.
The cops actually showed up at the house they were filming in because they intercepted the calls and thought they were real.

Wes Craven based this off The Gainesville Ripper. He saw this small town that knew there was a serial killer living among them and the longer he went uncaught, the more suspicious everyone seemed. That's way more terrifying than a literal monster. A human monster looks like everyone else.

And just fyi all the endings are drawn out like that in all of the other 5 movies and honestly it works really well for this franchise lol
And fun fact the first 3 movies of the franchise are related in more ways than one. You also get more back story from each of the movies. They really built a decent storyline for the first 3 movies. Movies 4-6 are good too while they do have some major changes there are also some connections to the first 3 that makes them all worth watching at least once.. they are even coming out with another one which will be #7 and that one will also have connections to the others. Even if you don't get through them for Oct you should still watch them all eventually 🙃
