It's amazing he amassed the numbers he did (note that the stats from the 1996 Sugar Bowl aren't written anywhere) (3,625 YDS, 39 TD, 170.6 RTG) a.) Only really throwing to 3 guys: Reidel Anthony (72 REC, 1,293 YDS, 18 TD), Ike Hillard (47 REC, 900 YDS, 10 TD in 11 games) and Jacquez Green (33 REC, 626 YDS, 9 TD), and b.) With a good, not great running game. Most Heisman winning QBs have had as good, if not a better run game. No back on Florida even reached 700 yards, yet Wuerffel still wrecked everyone.
Wuerffel was incredibly accurate and intelligent. Don't sell the backfield short, though. No one ran for over 700 yards because Spurrier's play selection didn't allow it to happen. This backfield was beyond stellar. You should also credit Terry Jackson as the 4th leading receiver on the team; he caught many touchdowns out of the backfield, some very important ones against Tennessee and Bama in the SEC title. Fred Taylor, Elijah Williams, AND Terry Jackson were a great complement to Wuerffel and would carve out their own legacies in the league. Eugene McCaslin was a serviceable back and would have started at tailback at any other SEC school.
@CharlesHallums In '96, no player outside of the three I mentioned caught more than 14 passes, had more than 253 receiving yards, or more than 1 receiving touchdown. I did undersell the backfield a bit, the quartet of Williams, Taylor, Jackson, and McCaslin combined for 1,978 yards and 21 touchdowns on 6 yards per carry
I grew up 2.5 hours away from Neyland Stadium in Knoxville, TN. My Grandpa was a life-long, DIEHARD University of Tennessee sports fan, and in turn, my entire family followed his lead and also became DIEHARD UT fans. As an 8-year-old boy in 1995, that Florida vs TN game was the first football game that I really remember watching and paying attention to. What I remember from that day/game is a few different things. 1. I remember the hatred my family had for Florida Gators Football 2. I remember falling in love with the game of football that day 3. I remember being mesmerized by the way Florida played football. 4. I remember that being the day I became a DIEHARD Florida Gators football fan. Fast Forward a year later and "my team" were National Champions. Believe me when I say, I let these Tennesseans hear about it for a solid year straight. My grandpa never really forgave me for becoming a Florida fan. I used to tell him, "It's your fault, you should've never let me watch the mid-90s Gators."
@@nicholasjoost5111 It's 100% fact. My Grandpa's name was Buddy Brown. He sat in his recliner every Saturday in the fall with John Ward blaring from his little hand-held Radio, the game on the TV, and a little Smokie toy that sang Rocky Top when you'd squeeze it. He'd squeeze that damn smokie every time UT scored a TD. My family would get together at his house 5-6 times every fall and watch Tennessee games. I was born in 1987, and I was 8-years old in 1995. That Tennessee vs Florida game was seriously the first football game that I remember vividly. It left an impression on me, and I've been a diehard fan ever since. You can't really tell it, but I'm wearing a Florida shirt in my picture. When my grandpa died a few years back, I had to wear a Tennessee button-down shirt as a Paul-bearer in his funeral. I wore a Florida shirt underneath. The last song they played at his funeral was Rocky Top.

1996 I was five years old..... Remembered them beating 'Bama in the SEC Title Game & Going to New Orleans for the "97 Sugar Bowl ( National Championship Game ).
36:26 Steve Spurrier explains how the Gators won the national title game. The first time FSU and UF played FSU kept blitzing constantly to put pressure on Wuerffel and it worked to give FSU the win. In the rematch, FSU thought they could do the same thing and win, but Spurrier seemed to be anticipating this, so he put Wuerffel in the shotgun to take away from the blitz so he could get the ball out to his receivers, who were more open without the blitzing defenders covering them.
Bro Ive never heard of another person who thinks Wuerffel was a joke and I'm a Gator who lives in the Kentucky/Tennessee border and both fan bases shown nothing but respect for the man.
As a boy,my first game I ever attended,I watched Wilbur Marshall, hammer the QB of Southern Cal,and he was one of the best Gators I have ever seen, dominate a game like I did that day,I have been really fortunate, and got to watch a lot of Great Football Games, and Players,Also was at a Game,Florida vs Tenn Years later, where Alex Brown just played extraordinary and has a career worth of highlights in a game, that really sticks out,I watched E. Smith, have some games where it seemed like every time he touch the ball he ripped off 20 yards,But Danny and Tim,were the most Dominant Gators I have ever had the opportunity to watch, and even though Tebow was as Polarizing, and Electrifying, personality to ever play QB in College,I can't honestly say he was any better than Wuerful was it's like splitting hairs on who was the best, they are both 2 of the best qbs to ever play college football, and that's in my lifetime,I'm told Spurrier was too,but that's before I was born, and we have been Blessed at Florida, with some Epic QBs,like Trask, Grossman, Matthews,Dean,Leak,K.Bell,Palmer, and there have been many more,I would have really like to have had a coach Like Spurrier,Meyer or Mullin, have had the opportunity to have coached Driscoll,or Grier, but never the less as Gator fan I have been very fortunate to watch all the great teams that had some really talented QBs play, sometimes, like Kresser, who was one of the two QBs that come out of High School and went to Florida, and just happened to be in class with Wuerful, but showed loyalty anyway, and so Spurrier helped hook him up with Marshall and he got a ring as well,D-1AA ,
My freshman year! Wow! Thought we'd be back during my time there. We got close a few times. We went 22-2 at home while I was there. The Ole' Ball Coach is a legend! Great time to be a Florida Gator!
Fall '96 was my final semester at UF. Experienced three football seasons as a student (JC transfer in 1994 after my four years in Air Force). Each year was so special and each really had its own flavor. 1994 we started #1 but our defense really wasn't good. Ended the reg. season 31-31 to Fla. State, but beat an undefeated Bama in the SECCG so that was great. 1995 we were undefeated but as everyone knows we couldn't tackle Tommy Frazier or Lawrence Phillips and got smashed. But 1996 at the start just had a feeling those guys paid the price, had the experience, were much better on defense and were on a mission! Go Gators!
