I think many of them are the ones who strictly come here to only discuss bands/music they already know (and like). The whole Information versus Confirmation thing
Absolutely fact I started watching this to expand my musical interests and knowledge past punk/ hardcore finally now that I'm in my 40s. Now I like a lot of stuff I'd have dismissed because it wasn't hardcore enough.
This isn't the issue. It was done in the name of humour so any criticism should be water off a duck's back. Pete doesn't have to run the slot other than be adjudicator.
Count me as one SOT fan who is *very happy* that SOT covers hard rock, heavy metal, progressive rock, classic rock, *and* jazz fusion! As far as I know, there is *no other* music channel which *goes so deep* into many different styles of rock and metal, and jazz fusion, and horror movies too! I love the new music reviews, the group discussions, the album rankings, the rants, the Monster's Den... SOT rocks! 🙂
My takes: 1. I'm a big fan of a lot of genres Pete generally doesn't like (90s alternative, punk & post-punk) and I'm not expecting Pete to ever become a fan of Nirvana or Television any more than I expect myself to become a fan of Dream Theater or Uriah Heep. 2. There are lots of places on RUclips for genres not in the general reach of Sea of Tranquility. I make videos about stuff I like and interact with other micro-channels. Pete's never going to rank the albums of Husker Du or Juliana Hatfield, so I'll do it myself. I'm in a world where if I get over 100 views it is huge, but I've discovered stuff like Zambian garage rock and Finnish punk from others that I've met along the way. 3. I watch shows on this channel because I am at least somewhat interested in metal, hard rock, and classic rock. I watch almost every episode of Pete & Martin because that pair is entertaining even if they are talking about music I don't care about. I watch most episodes of Hudson Valley Squares mainly for entertainment value. I'll pick and choose with Prog Seat & UK Connection and I'm not into fusion or horror movies so I skip those shows. I realize everything has its audience, and I suspect Pete wants to continue dong the fusion shows and the reviews of new albums as a labor of love even though he knows those don't get as many views. 4. If you do ever do a punk show, get Karen LaP. on it. She's got to have some great stories.
I do agree with the guy putting Ramones over Dream Theater and I love them both, but Ramones are up in my top 100 bands of all time, which Dream Theater is more than 10 spots below the list. It was very hard to put only 100 bands on a list of the greatest bands of all time. It all depends on who I love more and my music tastes. One day I may listen to Depeche Mode, and the next day it'll be Metallica and the day after that Bad Religion and the day after that after that, Lynyrd Skynyrd. It definitely depends on the mood I'm in to listen to the music I love. And the bands I mentioned are up in that top 100 bands list. My music taste will vary. If I want to listen to someone from the 2010s like Black Veil Brides, I'd go ahead and listen to that. If I want to listen to someone from the 60s like The Rolling Stones, I'd go ahead and listen to that.
Alternative and Punk are my favorite genres, but I tune in to your channel all the dang time, 😂 I like a wide range of Rock subgenres and always look into the artists you guys discuss. Always blown away at how many rock bands I've never heard of.
I got blown away with The Pretty Things! British Invasion band from the 60s that had a rougher edge than the Rolling Stones, The Who, The Kinks, The Animals and The Yardbirds. Their early records were garage rock with r&b and blues influences, which is really awesome! They were really awesome and very underrated. Unfortunately, frontman Phil May passed in May 2020 after complications of a bike accident. I do dig alternative and punk a lot. Alternative/grunge was huge in the 90s, and another positive thing about the 90s was the punk scene. Bad Religion, Green Day, NOFX, Rancid, Pennywise, The Offspring, MxPx, Anti Flag, The Donnas, Sleater Kinney, Bikini Kill, AFI, All, Jawbreaker, Millencolin, Face to Face, No Use of a Name, and Less Than Jake. So much great music from the 90s. Thrash was kinda of dying off, but besides the big four, Sepultura, Kreator, Sodom, and Testament were also having a ton of success. Instead of thrash, it was death metal that became the most popular subgenre of metal. Death, Cannibal Corpse, Deicide, Obituary, Carcass, Bolt Thrower, Morbid Angel, At the Gates, Suffocation, Vader, In Flames, Immolation, Incantation, Dismember, Entombed, and Dissection were some of the most popular bands of the 90s. 80s music overall wins, but 90s in rock and metal are awesome too.
Hello Pete. Being a 66 year old music nut I love your channel and watch nearly all your output, I admit I don't watch the monster channel, as I hate horror movies and modern films. But the music output is brilliant and I do know a lot about all styles of music, but love to hear other people's views on music I love. The guys and girls who are on your shows are very entertaining and knowledgeable. I watch from the UK and like the UK show. Keep up the great work and don't worry about the people who criticise, they don't have to watch.
I wasn't there. i was born in 1980. But goddamn do I ever love The Sound. I think I discovered them in 2010. I definitely understand the concept of "you had to be there" and I can imagine it applying to certain things, but I really believe music, art, stuff like this, is eternal; timeless.
Good art is. And The Sound certainly made that (tbh, I was "there"). I've got to know a lot (old) new music thanks to channels as this and Andy Edwards lately. And nowadays it's so easy to go to a streaming platform and listen to the recommendations from the likes of Pete and Andy. And the gems I find this way are keepers. YT in that respect has really opened my listening scope the last few years.
I am one of the listeners that want to hear about obscure bands and obscure albums. I watch all album reviews despite not liking all genres. You never know what you might like. Great show
To paraphrase Martin: "there are probably a lot of people who watch this channel who like punk, but they're in their late 50s." That fits me to a "T". I am probably around Pete's age. The first genre I listened to was prog - Gabriel Genesis, Yes, ELP, Gentle Giant, and I expanded to Strawbs along with American semi-prog (Styx, Kansas, Queen). I loved big keyboard sounds. I never got into Kiss. I did like Led Zeppelin and Rush. Then...heard the Ramones. I learn to love guitars. I expanded to the Clash, Wire, Gang of Four, and on and on. I heard Television, New York Dolls, etc. I kept going - Dead Kennedys, Minor Threat, Husker Du, Minutemen, Replacements. So, the one disconnect for me was so-called Heavy Metal. This channel opened my door. I never knew I loved Black Sabbath until I expanded my listening. Same with Iron Maiden. Heck - I even expanded way beyond that. Death metal, symphonic metal. So - my point....this channel (and others) serve as a potential "guide" (in that I will check out stuff I may never have heard before). I was hoping for a punk discussion, but there is plenty of good stuff here to keep me entertained and informed.
I personally don't consider Husker Du and The Replacements to be punk. Both of them were punk only on their debuts and that's it. The Replacements were also punk on the second album and that's it. Both became more alternative/post punk. Definitely important bands in alternative rock for sure. Alternative rock started in the 80s but became more well known and popular in the 90s thanks to Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains and Stone Temple Pilots. Those alternative bands in the 80s deserve credit too. You have to have a starting point somewhere.
@@takodabostwick8507 Good point. Looking back adjusts so-called labels completely. I do wonder when the term alternative rock started getting used. At one point it was labeled college rock merely due to where it was being played. Or Indie rock. Then alternative rock radio stations started appearing post KROQ it became a marketable term. I always thought it was late 80s/early 90s. Then Nirvana and Pearl Jam started selling millions.
Some interesting passages here, and as a prog guy growing up, I loved the Stranglers (as many prog guys did) because they weren't really punk and way more musical than their contemporaries. I think Daily Doug is reaction video worth watching as it helps those of us with no musical theory to understand why we like certain tracks/bands/genres- I genuinely think it adds something (without losing layman's sensibility) and deepens our sense of decisions these musicians make when they compose their music and their own sense of theory. I also appreciate the ranking album shows/new music shows, not just for those artists I know, but for other acts of whom I was unaware, as well as the one album wonder element from the past- so just to mention a few, I have picked up from Missing Records albums by the Sword, Witchcraft etc and thanks to the rankings of Elder, I will be seeing them at Slay in November. Unfortunately, for those committed to living in the past and with just a handful of old or heritage acts, there's nothing we can do for them
I just have one thing to say: SoT and The Contrarians are my favorite youtube channels. Because of you, I've learned a lot about my all time favorite bands, and discovered many "new" bands that fill my days now, which is everything for me. Thanks for that.
Martin is always fascinating and I like his curiosity for hearing different perspectives. I do like his respect for the 'reaction video' thing - there are a lot of trash reactions but there are some REALLY cool and insightful ones. The ones that talk about the music in an in depth way, instead of just 'oooh' and 'ahhh'. I guess THAT is the kind of 'Reaction Video' Pete is tired of. The good ones are for example the Classical musicians reacting to Metal - when they break down what they hear from a totally different angle of analysis.
I agree - I've watched quite a few of The Daily Doug's videos. It's cool when he discusses the various elements of music theory as he's listening to a piece of music new to him (and that I already know). Also he'll get into the possible meaning behind the lyrics & how they tie into the music...I usually come away from those vids feeling a little smarter & having been entertained. That's what it's all about
@@wolf1977 I was about to reply to this and reference Daily Doug as a reaction show especially given his response as a classical composer and lecturer to prog, metal etc, especially given how serious and intellectual many see these genres. Getting an understanding of music theory like this is absolutely worth investing in
@@wolf1977 Early on he tended to goof on metal lyrics or just read too much into them. Nowadays he is more likely to get that some songs (and even some bands) treat lyrics as an afterthought.
Daily Doug dissections of rock music is spectacular and contagious. Early on he was making fun of bands such as Pink Floyd... Actually smoking doobies and getting high so that he could understand what the lyrics were all about. 😂

I'm an old punker who has not heard 95% of what SoT covers... Do I need another dissertation on Black Flag? I'm here to learn new stuff! It's all new to me! I dig that you cover what you love.
SoT is far and away the best channel of its kind, a good mix of the well known and less well known it has introduced me to a lot of new music and prompted me to revisit some I had previously put aside. As a UK listener I now have more insight and interest in the big US artists that never made much of a mark over here. If a topic isn’t for you then don’t watch it, it really is that simple. Thanks and keep up the good work everyone!
I love this channel. There's no way I could watch everything on it, so I watch the ones that cover topics I'm interested in. I think there's a lot of variety here. Some channels focus strictly on one subgenre of music and that's it. There's nothing wrong with that either.
When you can get SoT & all of those other web shows for free then there's VERY little to complain about. Get most of your non-punk content here & then seek out the punk-related discussions elsewhere - problem solved!

“How dare this pizzeria not serve massaman curry?” It’s a RUclips channel, folks. We’re not obligated to watch videos about music we don’t relate to, and SoT isn’t obligated to pander to any one of us. Pete & co. have always been clear about what they do, and they do it well. Do I watch every video religiously? No. Just the ones I find interesting because it’s about something I like or because I want to find some new shit. Am I going to rage quit the channel because Pete’s never going to review a Czarface album? Also no. There are other channels out there for whatever music you want to learn more about. If you can’t find it, start one!
I'm a punk and hardcore guy and still love your stuff.I remember I used to go to this club, One room emo/punk/ska another classic heavy rock and hair metal, and the other Indie. I think I spent more time in the rock room chilling out and thought lots of the stuff is cool so now when you mention an unfamiliar band I'll often flick over and check out some of their stuff.
Only one hair band is better than a bunch of punk band and that band is Dokken. They are my number one hair metal/glam metal/whatever you call it. It doesn't matter. But what matters is that they are my favorites out of those 80s glam metal bands. They were fantastic! Don Dokken is a great vocalist, but George Lynch is the one that made the band so great. George Lynch is a guitar god. Definitely one of the best guitarists in metal for sure. Dokken is up in my top 20 bands of all time list, either at 17 or 18. Don't know if I put them ahead of or behind Linkin Park. But 4 punk bands are ahead of Dokken, and they are Green Day, The Jam, Sum 41 and Bad Religion. I love rock and metal as well, don't get me wrong, and I'm a huge fan of a bunch of bands, both old and new.
I am in the same age range as Pete and Martin. My first album was the Sabbath compilation We Sold Out Soul For Rock and Roll. From that moment on I fell in love with music. What I have found interesting about myself that this episode made me think about was how I have constantly added new genres, but I never jettisoned what I loved before. I Loved '70s classic rock Prog, yacht rock '70s r&b, no then discovered English punk and hardcore. Then that led me into metal. I fell in love with the burgeoning thrash, death and black metal scenes of the '80s and early '90s. I'm weird because I loved that stuff but bands like Priest and Madien never did anything for me. Then I discovered Nirvana years before they blew up, which led to discovering Soundgarden Pearl jam Alice in chains etc and I couldn't get enough of that. And that led me into discovering industrial bands like Nine Inch Nails and Manxon. From there I expanded into newer metal bands like Opeth, Katatonia, Dark Tranquility to death core like Lorna Shore. I've also discovered modern country music and love acts like Miranda Lambert. Eric Church and the incredible vocal harmonies of Little Big Town. Hell I even like Taylor Swift. She is an incredible talent who knows how to write catchy earworm pop songs. This is how weird I am. I'm always playing music and in any given day I could listen to Rush, the Residents, Overkill, The Bangles, Smashing Pumpkins, Emperor, White Stripes, Brand Of Sacrifice and Sabrina Carpenter. I don't know what that makes me but I don't care because I love it all.
Completely agree - I'm a similar age, and that was my first Sabbath album too! I'll also happily listen to music from different genres - that's really the point - I'd find it pretty boring continually listening to music that sounded the same. So whilst others might consider my musical choices "odd", I've never felt the need to apologise for them - they're "my" choices and I'm happy with them. That said, I'm also happy to follow up on recommendations in case I find something else I like - but we can't listen to (let alone love) everything!
While I would like a Punk Parade as I enjoy seeing SOT explore new areas, I’m not mad that there isn’t. It’s up to Pete to decide what he wants to spend his time on.

Since discovering SOT during the pandemic I have discovered new avenues of music that I knew very little about and given no time for before. I consider that I have lots of new friends with all your guests who I look forward to watching every week TV wishes it could have as entertaining people as yourself, Martin Popoff, Chris Alo, Luiss Nasser, Ken Golden etc. Even at 66 years old through you I have discovered Rush, King Crimson, Jethro Tull and many more. I watch all your programming even though I may have no knowledge of the artists discussed because it so entertaining and you get the bonus of searching out what is recommended. Keep up the great content.

Pete, great show as always, it hit me during your comments about variety from around 20:00-30:00 that it's the EXACT same problem that older bands have when trying to make setlists. They know that 80% of the crowd is there to only hear the same 6-8 big songs that band has over and over and will tune out for any new or old obscure song no matter how good it is. While a small percentage will complain endlessly that they have to hear the same songs over and over. It's kind of a no-win scenario.
...I've said it before and I'll say it again ...The Pete and Martin Volley on Topics in my Rock and Roll Orbit and some even stretch that Universe ( Thank the Stars ) never disappoint and I always leave with more than I came with ....Love You Guys ....All the Damn Time !
I mostly tune in for the Metal and Hard Rock content but I don't get upset over the prog stuff. I don't listen to much prog but I do enjoy some Jethro Tull, Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, Gentle Giant. I am just too busy with all the hard and heavy sub genres to dive deeper into prog. Appreciate all you do Pete. To me your channel already has HUGE variety.
@@aidenswords5809I would go towards the prog metal and symphonic metal bands with women on vocals. Opeth, Dream Theater, Queensryche, Between the Buried and Me and Gojira are a couple of great examples of great prog metal bands. But I do love The Moody Blues and Pink Floyd. I also do love Genesis. But I do love progressive metal a lot. I have a Queensryche patch on my denim jacket because I saw them live twice which is awesome! My dad is a huge fan and on one of the most recent albums he bought, there were some patches, and my mom thought I should put it in my jacket and I said ok. I also have a Pink Floyd patch as well. I want to put The Moody Blues very badly, the patches look terrible unfortunately, so I'll never get a Moody Blues patch, which sucks. I do have some metal and punk patches on my jacket. But at least I got a Death patch!
Martin, it's great that you discovered The Sound. Strangely enough they were never successful in their native England, but over here in the Low Countries (Belgium/ The Netherlands) they had a huge following.
This episode is my bottom line in why I have not gone ahead started my own channel. It just seems so frustrating. SOT is a great channel and kudos for you and your efforts in effective programming. AND GUESS WHAT? There is hundreds of other channels that I can subscribe to if I should tune in to something that I don’t want to hear or watch at the moment on SOT. Amazing that this channel surfing, short attention span world can’t move on to find something that will entertain them, but instead drop comments on how you need to address their needs and interests.
Pete, this episode displays the point that some people complain about everything. You never hide or mislead your tastes. I have similar tastes as yours so that's why I watch. It's OK not like everything!
Glad you found The Sound Martin! From The Lions Mouth is a favorite of mine:)........I'll never understand the mindset of a person who, if they like X,Y,Z music, are unable to seek and find a content creator who shares the same interests. There's tons of music channels on Y.T. Ignorance is abundant.

I come and watch, because I love your enthusiasm about the music you love. Doesn't matter if that's exactly the kind of music I love myself. There is overlap, though.
I will tell you this I started watching this channel for the metal and classic rock. What you have done for me is opened my eyes to genres like prog and fusion. I love bands like Gentle Giant and Porcupine Tree among others. I continue to learn about new bands and performers nearly each time I watch. And I look forward to the Monsters Den. The shows about the old universal horror and Hammer movies take Me back to childhood. But seriously SOT has for sure broadened my horizons. Keep up the work and I'll keep watching bro.
Also on this subject, growing up with punk ive always had a fascination with the pre punk stuff, some of that would fit into the "rock" criteria, the UK stuff like Chiswick records, Hammersmith Gorillas, Incredible Kidda band, Dr Feelgood and the pub rock stuff of the early 70s. and the US stuff like The stooges, The NYC stuff, New York Dolls, Death, Third world war (Jello Biafra of the Dead Kennedys was a fan)
SOT has never been shy about explaining that they cover bands that interest them and if you're interested in those bands, congratulations! You've found a channel that covers the things you want to hear about! I can't tell you how many bands I discovered through Pete and SOT. He's covered so many genres and bands that I had never heard of that I wonder how he had time to discover all of them himself! Keep doing what you do Pete! You've always provided a wide variety of content that pushes the limits of your audience's awareness and understanding. There have been many bands and or albums that I was aware of and listened to, that I just didn't get, that all these years later (on SOT's recommendation/illumination), I have gone back to and found quality music that I enjoy immensely now. Thanks for your hard work and a big thank you to the panelists like Martin that you've marshaled together to make content with!
I stumbled across SOT due to RUclips AI telling me that I might like the channel. I believe it was a ranking the Stones albums which is probably my favorite band. I have to admit a lot of the bands mentioned on the channel I don’t get and never will. I definitely lean towards alt/punk music but I feel I have enough knowledge on that genre that I don’t need SOT to have a specific show on the topic. I watch SOT to find out about music and bands I normally wouldn’t investigate. I’ve discovered some great new metal, stoner rock and even prog bands that I’m glad I took the time to listen to.
Pete very good show. The short answer is: you do you. To me life/music listening is a Venn diagram: some tastes and choices will intersect with others, then some will diverge wildly. Am I disappointed you do not discuss ambient, avant garde, or what is now deemed "weird" (I have seen it in multiple record stores)? No. There are other ways to glean into those genres. I would like to thank Martin for literally just introducing me to the band The Sound. I have just come out of a one hour RUclips rabbit hole. I rarely act on recommendations (being that older, jaded kinda guy) but I’m so glad you managed to pique my interest. That is post punk at its absolute finest. I can’t believe this band didn’t make it to at least the level of an Echo and the Bunnymen. Tragic and an even more tragic outcome to the lead singer. Thanks again Martin
@@billymac72 I just did - they're also new to me (The Sound). I'm actually finding A LOT to like - their six studio albums are all at least pretty good. I don't like the "post punk" label (or most sub-genres tagged as 'post'). To me they're a punkish New Wave, too melodic for 'real' punk. They do have an album called Propaganda released in 1999 that's apparently their actual debut album from '79. That one's closer to punk & more raw-sounding (and the one I wasn't into as much). I think I'm gonna make a new playlist for myself: this stuff, The Fixx, some Talking Heads, The Vapors, The Plimsouls, The Jags, some Cars - good stuff...Still need to listen to a few of their EP's & live albums...
The same thing happened to me about eight years ago. I randomly discovered The Sound and Adrian Borland on RUclips and was drawn in. And I'm more of a classic/indie rock guy. I clicked on The Sound's Jeapardy album just for kicks and was hooked. Then I did the reaearch on the band and more importantly, Adrian Borland. I believe he was truly a tormented genius. He should be way more widely recognized. For anyone wanting to check out him or the band I recommend starting out with the band's first two albums: Jeopardy and From the Lion's Mouth. Then check out the live album: In the Hothouse. Then Borland's solo album: 5:00 am.
@@wolf1977 they’re very melodic, and that’s one of the top criteria’s for me always. Got a real edge to them also. I would say they are a cross between Wire & XTC (musically) with the lyrical slant of Joy Division. Never a fan of JD though, find them too gloomy
@@jjvermeer Listening to some solo Adrian Borland, looks like he's got something like 7 releases including an album of demos. So far so good, sounds in line with The Sound (not really punk-I'd say ALT rock) - pretty melodic. 5:00am seems more introspective with slower tracks but it's good. The more upbeat numbers ("City Speed", "Stray Bullets") are excellent. The Amsterdam Tapes is another good one & Beautiful Ammunition, and to a lesser extent Cinematic. Didn't like the acoustic The Last Days Of The Rain Machine as much...Sometimes I get U2 vibes (but a more ALT version)
Yes there are times the fan worship on the shows turn me off but it wouldn't say they were bad shows. If I don't sync with the topic,I don't watch. I'd prefer more ranking shows but I am one viewer amoung thousands and I get it. They deserve to see stuff on their likes. Sometimes I get turned on to something and it's like 😊. Keep up the good work SOT crew.
Kudos to Martin on the "Funhouse" / "No Fun" STOOGES song references at 3:21-3:25 😆 The Pardo/Popoff "Funhouse" show is my favorite show; I think the reason it resonates with me is because it gets into some really deep levels of observation into the minds of music fans and how they tick, and gets a good look at the landscape of opinions. Personally I like that Sea of Tranquility is holding up the banner for the straight-ahead / non-alternative side of rock music (metal, hard rock, AOR, Southern rock, prog rock, fusion). SOT provides a LOT of variety within that set of themes. Martin is more of a punk/post-punk/new wave/power pop fan whereas Pete isn't at all, so you get a little bit of that from Martin on the Funhouse show. But there is so much obsession over punk and alternative elsewhere, so I don't have to have it here (not to mention that genre set gets a little too pretentious for its own good a lot of times, and I'm not here for the pretention, I'm here for the music). Pete is correct that not everything that SOT covers is things I like. I'm not a horror / comic fan, and I don't like nu-metal or most extreme metal. Also regarding the album reviews, I'm wary of current music because of 1) the "copies of copies of copies" issue that Martin mentions and 2) I HATE Loudness War mastering, and almost all the current albums are guaranteed to have it. On the other hand, speaking of obscure music, I love to learn about obscure albums from this channel. Pete's "Ranking the Albums" is one of my favorite shows because its helps give me overviews of lesser-known artists' catalogs. The HAWKWIND episode was incredibly helpful with untangling that messy discography, and the SAGA one led me right to their AOR albums of the late 1980s, some of which I've now listened myself sick on. Also the Pardo/Popoff Funhouse "Problem Children Part 1" episode led me to "Breath of the Pit" (2014) by ALGY WARD'S TANK, which is still the heaviest metal album I've EVER heard and one I listen to a LOT. Where has that album been all my life, and why isn't more metal like that? 😳 I too am a little unnerved to hear IRON MAIDEN, MERCYFUL FATE and KISS referred to as novelty acts; you remove the exterior visuals and you have some really incredible and well-composed and played music, as Pete says. Ah well, you can't agree with everything; on the other hand, I love MAGMA and think Pete's hatred of that group is hilariously entertaining.
The Loudness thing pretty much started because around 1993, a couple records came out which were made loud so that they would stand out, especially when played on a car stereo. And the next we knew, more and more bands were complaining that their albums wouldn't be "competitive". Contrary to what many believe, it wasn't labels or producers who are to blame, especially WRT to bigger artists. It was the artists themselves who typically demand a louder mix and master.
@@ryanjacobson2508 This is a great point! The artists finally got what they wanted, and it sucks. In fact, in the 1980s and prior the labels were notorious for always wanting to turn the volume down. The earliest Loudness War master I know of is "Broken" (1992) by Nine Inch Nails, and it's been, ahem, a "Downward Spiral" ever since.
I think I discovered SOT and reaction videos around the same time. I have found value in some reaction channels, particularly with one like Lost in Vegas. The fun part is that it’s like a substitute for playing music that you enjoy for someone who’s never heard it. But with LiV in particular, they genuinely seemed to have realized that there’s a whole other world of music out there that they enjoy. And they articulate their analysis well, and just show genuine excitement when something sounds great. When they flipped out over Blackwater Park, it was about specific things they heard that I never paid attention to. So that increased my own enjoyment and rediscovery of music I had already known for a long time. We certainly don’t have to like everything, but it really feels great when something finally clicks.
There is loads of variety and from most shows I get to know new bands and bands I have never heard of. I have discovered so many new bands and 😂revisited older bands thanks to SOT
As a fan of every genre you guys cover, it's a pleasure to hear about bands I love and learn about stuff I've never heard of ( Birth, Jalayan, & Riverside being a few examples of bands I've learned of from you) for the last 10 odd years I've been following the channel. Martin is a local hero, as a guy that grew up in the 90's in Toronto. Keep up the great work! Fuck the haters!
A few thoughts: 1. The original purpose of this channel was to review new releases. Never stop that even though they are not your most watched shows. 2. Some of my favorite shows are when you discuss obscure artists (especially late 60's, early 70's; which I missed first time around). I have discovered a lot of great music by watching these shows. 3. Don't worry about covering other genres that you're not comfortable with. There is a lot of music I love that is not covered here. That's fine. there is plenty of other channels and media for me to watch. I'm here mainly for everything but Metal. Keep up the great content
That was my favorite part about the channel too…the more obscure 60’s and 70’s bands, but haven’t seen much of that in a long time which is why I don’t tune in as frequently as I used to. I’m a big fan of post punk/goth/alternative etc., obviously there are other channels for that, that’s fine if it’s not Pete’s thing…we all like different stuff, I can’t stand modern prog metal bands or stuff like Dream Theatre for instance. The Monster’s Den is good fun though, I still make a point to tune in over there.
@@sixbladeknife44 On the obscure '60s and '70s artists-- sometimes, when Pete does his weekly new album reviews, he covers new releases by pretty obscure '60s and '70s bands. Sometimes, these are new releases of unreleased music from the bands' archives, and sometimes, they are reissues of older albums by obscure artists. Good stuff!
@@christianman73 That Forgotten Favorites show was the one I always looked forward to the most since it's a passion of mine to hunt down 'obscure'/unknown 70's rock albums/bands. And seemed like (from memory) that many of the viewer comments were along the lines of "thanks for covering this band/album x - I didn't know about this..."
@@wolf1977 I agree-- the Forgotten Favorites series was so great! I have learned about far more cool obscure music from SOT than any other music channel. This is still the case, in an ongoing way, for me, today.
@@christianman73 Since Pete seems to have 'retired' that particular show - I could've sworn that at some point late last year he said that it'd come back as a monthly series...If you have the patience check out a YT channel by The Gladiator Of Rock. Pretty much all 60's & 70's lesser-known albums. I've found some real gems there, he's posted tons of music over the years (literally hundreds). The only thing is that he doesn't index the album tracks like some do (which makes it super easy to identify each song on the album)
It's strange Pete I don't listen to much prog rock, but when it delves into progressive metal it really gets my attention. I've went back a few times to those excellent shows with Steven Reid Riverside and IQ are great examples, Haken was great as well, so more programmes with Steven delving into prog bands which delve into prog metal would be welcome. 👍
Opeth, Dream Theater, Queensryche, Between the Buried and Me and Gojira are my favorite progressive metal bands! I also considered Death to be progressive metal as well! Those are my favorites! Although I also love The Moody Blues and Pink Floyd. I have 4 progressive bands on my top 40, and they are The Moody Blues, Pink Floyd, Death and Opeth. These bands have a ton of talented musicians and are some of the best. And I'm also into symphonic metal as well. I love Nightwish, Within Temptation, Epica, Delain, Leave Eyes and After Forever. Those are my favorite symphonic metal bands! I don't give a shit about power metal! That is total bullshit to me, with a few exceptions of anyone that was associated to Helloween after they left the band.
fascinating discussion - I'm apparently one of those weird people who is constantly looking for something new, be it brand new releases or 50 years old that I've somehow missed until now. Great stuff - this is why I always look forward to the funhouse on Fridays!
Popoff and Pardo are at it again with an interesting discussion of something a little different than another musical theme. The intersection of knowledge, personal passions, life experiences, and other factors come into play. Some people seek comfort and affirmation; others seek new frontiers. Many seek both. SoT generally wears its heart on its sleeve. Older than both members of the funhouse so personal experiences definitely are influenced by growing up in the 60s and early 70s. One of the more obvious impacts of that - at least personally - is growing up with strong AM radio presence where you heard all types of music - rock, blues, soul, R & B, pop, and on and on - coupled with parents whose divergent musical tastes included big band, classical, New Orleans jazz, vocalists and a house where everyone played or learned an instrument [or two]. Though it has become increasingly difficult to watch every SoT program and life opened back up after the pandemic, continue to watch as much as can be fit. The value of SoT is the personalities and sincerity, or perhaps better, integrity, of those appearing in the program. Real personalities shine through and that, along with continued exposure to new 'new' music as well as new 'old' music is what keeps returning me to the channel. Thanks, gents for a fascinating discussion of what interests you and how you approach these particular instances in your careers and musical lives. There ya go!
Punk has never been my thing but I do like some bands that have punkish tendencies....that have been touched my the shadows of punkiness....like early Pretenders, The Clash, and Green Day. Good show, guys. Thanks.
I think I've been following this YT show for at least 3-4 years, but this show is the really the only thing I watch. I've caught a few episodes of the prog seat and the metal discussion. Really enjoy the Pardo/Popoff shows.
A good episode. I have said this before this is Pete's Channel so he can do his channel whatever he wants. Like he you like what you like. If don't like certain topics of music you don't you don't have to watch. Just watch what topics that you are into.
I don't miss Hudson Valley Squares or Friday Fun house. I have bought albums based on your review. I definitely came to hear about bands or albums that got passed by
Really great episode. I love my metal, which is what keeps me coming back. But I love punk and post punk, especially Television, Ha ha! I love both punk and metal. I never really understand the debate between these two. I think that's bullcrap about debating which is better or what you listen to. It's ridiculous. Both punk and metal have great bands. If I'm in a mood of listening to a punk band, I'd go ahead and listen to that punk band. If I want to listen to a metal band, I'd also go ahead and listen to that metal band. It depends on the mood I'm in and if I want to listen to it or not. Other days, I go back and listen to some of my favorite bands, and I go, yeah, that's some awesome stuff. This band definitely rocks.
I love your channel. Sometimes I learn things about bands I never have heard before, sometimes I learn things about bands I thought I would know everything about. And to me the mix is absolutely ok. I remember last week watching the ranking of "November". Man, such a great band I never heard a single note of before. Also the live album show. I have tons of live records and sometimes I simply forget about the pure greatness of some of these works. Some weeks ago I discovered "Strange Highways" by Dio. Man I was thirty years old when that album was released and didn´t know about it. Always thought of "Rainbow Rising" as his biggest Dio record and even didn´t get the Black Sabbath releases with Dio on vocals. Two weeks ago I bought "Heaven and Hell" and "Mob Rules" and they´re on heavy rotation!
I'm actually into progressive music, some metal, AND punk.... and I believed the joke, simply because Martin was involved, that made it believable for me. Having said that, I'm also not disappointed. Everybody likes different things. I'm not watching SOT for the punk content, LOL. I'm perfectly happy with the programming here.
I knew it was a joke right off the bat 😂. To ppl who took it seriously, c’mon! I absolutely love this channel and watch almost all of the content. The reasons I watch as much as I can is that I can revisit the things I love and find new things to check out. I’ve discovered so many great bands/albums and enjoy the perspectives from everyone. If you’re coming here for a genre that isn’t covered, there are so many other places to check those things out. I don’t watch a video about Fear or Black Flag and expect them to mention Uriah Heep.
I agree w/some of the posters here. This isn't the only channel I tune in or subscribe to. I mainly come for the bands I love, and this channel actually covers like Led Zeppelin, The Stones, Whitesnake, Def Leppard and Van Halen. I love bands this show does not cover like INXS, U2 and Depeche Mode. But I've found another channel and host, who I have great discussions with, who does cover those bands. I understand that this channel isn't for all genres of music, but it doesn't mean I can voice my disappointment. Anyway, this is a free country and, if I don't like it, I can go somewhere else.
Or you could support other RUclipsrs. Sea of Tranquility isn't the only RUclipsr that talks about music. There are a ton of channels that talk about music. Bryce Talks Metal is a great example of a RUclipsr who talks about music.
Interesting "meta" episode. And all kudos for Martin for praising The Sound 👏 Underappreciated is a too often used term for actually revered musicians who maybe aren't as popular as others (like Ian Paice vs. Bonham. Surely not that famous, but I've often read of other drummers praising him), but for The Sound it certainly fits. A great band with a hugely talented frontman. And certainly with an edge with his mental illness, his struggles with it often reflected in his lyrics. In The Netherlands they enjoyed some popularity and could be heard on alternative radio at the time (lucky for me).
I watch SOT BECAUSE you guys have a lot of variety and cover music that I’ve listen to all my life. It’s fun to hear the panels and the variety of opinions that are here. I understand how hard it is to do show after show and keep everything fresh. You guys do a great job.
For me, it's all about the discovery, whether it's about some music I don't know or about facts I don't know about artists I like...I love hearing about all genres covered on SoT and you guys make it interesting. Plus, I buy records everyday, so I need fuel and ideas. I have to say that what got me hooked on the channel was the "One and done" series that Pete did during Covid. The only show I don't watch on SoT is the Monster's Den. Cheers.
My question would be... "Who are actually reading the comments". You have to be an incredible day speed reader to even pull up the interesting questions moving forward here. Obviously the bigger bands are big because they should be. The smaller folk trying to live the dream are trying their best to become noticed by influencers like this channel. I think at this point in 2023 that lots of talented got UNNOTICED the past few decades because of Corporatization methods. What a shame. However, there were many acts and great bands that gave that chance to artists over the years. I think this country is built strong enough to rebuild here and give another chance to the many artists who deserve that chance that felt that they were left without hope. Love the channel Peter and love the insights with all of your shows and podcasts. My favorite shows are with Martin. So much history to learn from. I thought I did my research over the years and them you all talk about an obscure act or band/artist. We all have to keep educating our youth or else we are all doomed in the real POST FUTURE that timeline #2 is fading but still in front of us all.
I have a friend who's definitely into metal, but he's more into metalcore and deathcore, so modern metal. Metalcore yes, deathcore, meh for me in my eyes. I'm an old head when it comes to metal, but they are a ton of great modern metal bands out there. I meant to say that I'm an old soul. 26-year-old man who loves older music, but I still love modern rock/metal. I love gothic/symphonic metal, especially with a front woman in the band. And they are way more attractive than a majority of pop stars nowadays. And I'm also into punk, but I have a rough time finding other friends who like punk and would like to come and see these shows with me. Plus, I enjoy both punk and metal. I don't get this debate at all. It's total bullshit! Plus, Lars Frederiksen of Rancid who's punk also loves metal. Plus, my high school is very hip-hop and R&B oriented. Not really the biggest rap fan at all, except for some nu metal. And R&B nowadays just bore the fuck out of me! 60s/70s was the golden age of R&B. And I'm not going to a rap/r&b show anytime soon. Plus, I have to pay for my own ticket, which I have no plans on doing that, when the shows I want to go to are rock/metal/alternative. And depending on the day, if I want to listen to punk, I'll go and listen to some punk. If I want to listen to metal, I'll go and listen to metal. It depends on what I want to listen to. I just go for it and listen to whatever I like. And I enjoy every single minute of it.
Interesting show today gentlemen. I’ll start off by saying you can’t please everyone. I give you guys credit for coming up with new content. That has to be challenging. The subject matter not only has to please the fans but you as hosts as well. Honestly, I don’t watch every show/topic and that’s okay. I will say I thoroughly enjoy the new album review segments. discovering new music is a treat. Reaction videos….have to be honest, never watched one. Chance that I do is slim. In summary, keep doing what you do. I find most of the episodes entertaining and that’s why we watch, right, to be entertained and while at the same time hopefully learn something.
I find it amazing that people would complain there is ‘no variety’ on Sea of Tranquility. The channel covers a wide range of rock and metal genres all the spectrum between extreme metal and jazz fusion. And some people will complain its too diverse while others bemoan the lack of emphasis on punk and alternative. But I appreciate you make the effort to include a wide range and cover the classics, review new stuff by famous and obscure artists. No one else really covers that range so the ‘lack of variety’ allegation is particularly ignorant, in my view. There are channels out there that only cover black metal for instance. That’s a niche sub genre of a niche genre (extreme metal) in the first place! 🤣 But no one will go there and accuse them of lack of variety because its a small insular community of music fans in the first place. (Again nothing wrong with that but more awareness is appropriate).

Agree .. watch what u like and skip the stuff u do not... although dipping your toes in something different is coll every once in awhile.. SoT reminds me of hanging with my friends... bringin your new LP's talking music in our basements having a few cold ones...We had similar taste but not exactly the same .. so I picked up some favs and others didn't stick.and turned others on to a few ......it was communal and as an old dude that isn't happening otherwise .. 😀
I never knew that Suicidal Tendencies were considered Punk because they were always in the Metal section at the store and their videos were played on Power Hour which was a Metal show.
there were many bands in the 80s that crossed over into metal. ST, COC, Cro-Mags, TSOL, DRI, Agnostic Front...and then you had "alternative" bands like The Cult and FNM too. Even Bowie went metal in the 80s with Tin Machine.
@@wernermoritz882 well, "metal" may be too strong, but they were definitely hard rock. the pt. was that many bands were "crossing over" into harder or heavier territory because of metals popularity at the time. commitment could vary by artist.
@@independenceltd. yes, they are pretty heavy but not metal. They don‘t have metal guitar tones or aesthetics (no shredding) but would totally fit into early alternative rock though. A lot of noise rock in there, too.
As someone who does like all the genres you cover here, keep fighting the good fight. If there's pockets of genre you don't like, that's fine. The one thing about RUclips: if there's something you are into (legal!), there's someone talking about it somewhere.
I think that a YT Channel is to the general public, more or less, viewed as a TV program. Music may def be a big part of a YT Music Channel, but another important and integral part is the personalities on the Channel. So, they may tune into HVS just to watch the personalities, even if the aren't into the topic.
Martin brings such an interesting perspective to SoT...my first love back in1979 was metal but as it stagnated in the mid 80s my tastes shifted/expanded to bands such as husker du REM to rap and so much more.. sticking to just 'rock' is so limiting..open eyes and open ears people !!
I'd guess at least half of my created Playlist are SoT related - ranking albums, funhouse, UK Connection, the alphabet Prog Seats, etc. I'm almost 56, and there was a whole lot of stuff that I never really was able to explore a lot of bands at the time, and being able to have a guide(s) who have a ton of knowledge and history with those bands allows me to have a guideline to explore their catalog and which albums to start with/avoid. I probably watch 80% of SoT videos, if one is on a topic I don't really know about, it is a learning experience. If I'm not interested in a band or topic I just don't watch, I don't complain. The only real question is - how do you find time to listen all these albums?

I'm a fan of *many* punk bands, but I've *never* understood people coming to SOT and being surprised, or upset, that Pete doesn't feature punk bands and albums on this channel (except for when Martin speaks on them, as he is a fan). SOT is Pete's channel. He runs it, and he's not a punk fan. For me, that's the end of the matter. He covers *so many genres* here. Punk is not one of them, and that's fine.
Yet when he does videos live, some people, including me do talk about punk. At least I get to talk with other people about my favorite albums or bands by punk bands.

I just don't understand why some people come to SOT and *actually complain about Pete* not covering punk, indie, and/or new wave bands in *his own videos* for SOT, which is his channel. Pete's not a punk, indie, or new wave fan. Why would anyone expect him to cover genres that he doesn't enjoy in his own videos for his own channel? Martin Popoff likes punk, and Pete knows that, so when Martin is in an SOT video, sometimes he brings up a punk band. However, on his own, Pete almost never talks about punk, because he doesn't like it, and it's his channel. He covers the music that he personally enjoys here. It's that simple, and I see no reason for me, or anyone, to have a problem with it.

If Black Sabbath gets mentioned for example, I can talk about them because they're awesome 👍. It really depends if I want to contribute or have a conversation with someone about a band I've been listening to recently.

I used to try to participate in the live chats, but I found that for myself, I just prefer watching the videos first, and then commenting later, in the comment sections. Just my choice. I can't focus on chatting and watching a video at the same time. If people were actually discussing the video in the live chat more often, I might enjoy it more, but too often, it seemed to me that people were discussing anything and everything except the video which was debuting, so I stopped trying to partake in the live chats. I'm glad that other people enjoy them though.
I think Martin has been watching Beth Roars and The Daily Doug.😃You should do a show about Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole and Ella Fitzgerald. That'll show 'em! I like this channel because it's eclectic. I'm more of a 1960's-1970's music person but love watching Hudson Valley Squares to hear about some ultra obscure Swedish death metal band I've never heard of. I like the UK connection because it's like watching a comedy team doing a routine. I'm a huge prog fan so I love In the Prog Seat. Friday's with Martin is great. I love music and like hearing and learning new things and this channel fits my need..
If the music inspires you, it inspires you. If it doesn’t, it doesn’t. That’s the great thing about being a music fan, we all get to shape our own tastes.
Punk is an ethos for me. I love some punk bands and couldn't care less about some others. Just a matter of personal taste. But I really love the ethos that drives and inspires the music. Metal is the same for me, Prog, you name it. I also really like it when I get into a band later on that maybe I hated or ignored years earlier. I find that's at least one bonus of getting older lol
I am pretty much the same with punk and other genres, though I am not a metal fan really, some of the Prog metal bands I like though, but not Dream Theater lol.
I disagree with Martin in “why listen to new music?” I’m always listening to new releases. Yet I am doing the very thing Martin talked about. I’m finding out about a band from the past, in an era of music important to me, that is mostly unknown to me. I’m very excited. I listened to the band’s first album. I was a little critical because I felt it was sticking too much to the past. It did have a couple songs towards the end that was more in the direction I like. I hope that may indicate where the band is going. I’m very eager to hear their other releases, see what direction the band will take. While it is very exciting to dig deeper into the past and discover things you don’t know about, I say it is important to keep moving ahead with what’s currently going on. Again, I'm finding this a good discussion.
Punk and post punk i already know about. I come here for an alternative view to the critics narrative that punk saved rock and prog rock is all bad. Thank you for a great show i watch daily

Absolutely fact I started watching this to expand my musical interests and knowledge past punk/ hardcore finally now that I'm in my 40s. Now I like a lot of stuff I'd have dismissed because it wasn't hardcore enough.

This isn't the issue. It was done in the name of humour so any criticism should be water off a duck's back. Pete doesn't have to run the slot other than be adjudicator.

Count me as one SOT fan who is *very happy* that SOT covers hard rock, heavy metal, progressive rock, classic rock, *and* jazz fusion! As far as I know, there is *no other* music channel which *goes so deep* into many different styles of rock and metal, and jazz fusion, and horror movies too! I love the new music reviews, the group discussions, the album rankings, the rants, the Monster's Den... SOT rocks! 🙂
My takes:
1. I'm a big fan of a lot of genres Pete generally doesn't like (90s alternative, punk & post-punk) and I'm not expecting Pete to ever become a fan of Nirvana or Television any more than I expect myself to become a fan of Dream Theater or Uriah Heep.
2. There are lots of places on RUclips for genres not in the general reach of Sea of Tranquility. I make videos about stuff I like and interact with other micro-channels. Pete's never going to rank the albums of Husker Du or Juliana Hatfield, so I'll do it myself. I'm in a world where if I get over 100 views it is huge, but I've discovered stuff like Zambian garage rock and Finnish punk from others that I've met along the way.
3. I watch shows on this channel because I am at least somewhat interested in metal, hard rock, and classic rock. I watch almost every episode of Pete & Martin because that pair is entertaining even if they are talking about music I don't care about. I watch most episodes of Hudson Valley Squares mainly for entertainment value. I'll pick and choose with Prog Seat & UK Connection and I'm not into fusion or horror movies so I skip those shows. I realize everything has its audience, and I suspect Pete wants to continue dong the fusion shows and the reviews of new albums as a labor of love even though he knows those don't get as many views.
4. If you do ever do a punk show, get Karen LaP. on it. She's got to have some great stories.
I do agree with the guy putting Ramones over Dream Theater and I love them both, but Ramones are up in my top 100 bands of all time, which Dream Theater is more than 10 spots below the list. It was very hard to put only 100 bands on a list of the greatest bands of all time. It all depends on who I love more and my music tastes. One day I may listen to Depeche Mode, and the next day it'll be Metallica and the day after that Bad Religion and the day after that after that, Lynyrd Skynyrd. It definitely depends on the mood I'm in to listen to the music I love. And the bands I mentioned are up in that top 100 bands list. My music taste will vary. If I want to listen to someone from the 2010s like Black Veil Brides, I'd go ahead and listen to that. If I want to listen to someone from the 60s like The Rolling Stones, I'd go ahead and listen to that.
Alternative and Punk are my favorite genres, but I tune in to your channel all the dang time, 😂 I like a wide range of Rock subgenres and always look into the artists you guys discuss. Always blown away at how many rock bands I've never heard of.

I got blown away with The Pretty Things! British Invasion band from the 60s that had a rougher edge than the Rolling Stones, The Who, The Kinks, The Animals and The Yardbirds. Their early records were garage rock with r&b and blues influences, which is really awesome! They were really awesome and very underrated. Unfortunately, frontman Phil May passed in May 2020 after complications of a bike accident. I do dig alternative and punk a lot. Alternative/grunge was huge in the 90s, and another positive thing about the 90s was the punk scene. Bad Religion, Green Day, NOFX, Rancid, Pennywise, The Offspring, MxPx, Anti Flag, The Donnas, Sleater Kinney, Bikini Kill, AFI, All, Jawbreaker, Millencolin, Face to Face, No Use of a Name, and Less Than Jake. So much great music from the 90s. Thrash was kinda of dying off, but besides the big four, Sepultura, Kreator, Sodom, and Testament were also having a ton of success. Instead of thrash, it was death metal that became the most popular subgenre of metal. Death, Cannibal Corpse, Deicide, Obituary, Carcass, Bolt Thrower, Morbid Angel, At the Gates, Suffocation, Vader, In Flames, Immolation, Incantation, Dismember, Entombed, and Dissection were some of the most popular bands of the 90s. 80s music overall wins, but 90s in rock and metal are awesome too.
A punk parade would be very good in this channel too!!!!

Hello Pete. Being a 66 year old music nut I love your channel and watch nearly all your output, I admit I don't watch the monster channel, as I hate horror movies and modern films. But the music output is brilliant and I do know a lot about all styles of music, but love to hear other people's views on music I love. The guys and girls who are on your shows are very entertaining and knowledgeable. I watch from the UK and like the UK show.
Keep up the great work and don't worry about the people who criticise, they don't have to watch.

I wasn't there. i was born in 1980. But goddamn do I ever love The Sound. I think I discovered them in 2010. I definitely understand the concept of "you had to be there" and I can imagine it applying to certain things, but I really believe music, art, stuff like this, is eternal; timeless.

I am one of the listeners that want to hear about obscure bands and obscure albums. I watch all album reviews despite not liking all genres. You never know what you might like. Great show
To paraphrase Martin: "there are probably a lot of people who watch this channel who like punk, but they're in their late 50s." That fits me to a "T". I am probably around Pete's age. The first genre I listened to was prog - Gabriel Genesis, Yes, ELP, Gentle Giant, and I expanded to Strawbs along with American semi-prog (Styx, Kansas, Queen). I loved big keyboard sounds. I never got into Kiss. I did like Led Zeppelin and Rush. Then...heard the Ramones. I learn to love guitars. I expanded to the Clash, Wire, Gang of Four, and on and on. I heard Television, New York Dolls, etc. I kept going - Dead Kennedys, Minor Threat, Husker Du, Minutemen, Replacements. So, the one disconnect for me was so-called Heavy Metal. This channel opened my door. I never knew I loved Black Sabbath until I expanded my listening. Same with Iron Maiden. Heck - I even expanded way beyond that. Death metal, symphonic metal. So - my point....this channel (and others) serve as a potential "guide" (in that I will check out stuff I may never have heard before). I was hoping for a punk discussion, but there is plenty of good stuff here to keep me entertained and informed.
I personally don't consider Husker Du and The Replacements to be punk. Both of them were punk only on their debuts and that's it. The Replacements were also punk on the second album and that's it. Both became more alternative/post punk. Definitely important bands in alternative rock for sure. Alternative rock started in the 80s but became more well known and popular in the 90s thanks to Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains and Stone Temple Pilots. Those alternative bands in the 80s deserve credit too. You have to have a starting point somewhere.
@@takodabostwick8507 Good point. Looking back adjusts so-called labels completely. I do wonder when the term alternative rock started getting used. At one point it was labeled college rock merely due to where it was being played. Or Indie rock. Then alternative rock radio stations started appearing post KROQ it became a marketable term. I always thought it was late 80s/early 90s. Then Nirvana and Pearl Jam started selling millions.
Some interesting passages here, and as a prog guy growing up, I loved the Stranglers (as many prog guys did) because they weren't really punk and way more musical than their contemporaries. I think Daily Doug is reaction video worth watching as it helps those of us with no musical theory to understand why we like certain tracks/bands/genres- I genuinely think it adds something (without losing layman's sensibility) and deepens our sense of decisions these musicians make when they compose their music and their own sense of theory. I also appreciate the ranking album shows/new music shows, not just for those artists I know, but for other acts of whom I was unaware, as well as the one album wonder element from the past- so just to mention a few, I have picked up from Missing Records albums by the Sword, Witchcraft etc and thanks to the rankings of Elder, I will be seeing them at Slay in November. Unfortunately, for those committed to living in the past and with just a handful of old or heritage acts, there's nothing we can do for them

I just have one thing to say: SoT and The Contrarians are my favorite youtube channels. Because of you, I've learned a lot about my all time favorite bands, and discovered many "new" bands that fill my days now, which is everything for me. Thanks for that.
I've learned a lot from reading Martin Popoff books and listening to Pete Pardo shows
I got Martin's BOC book recently that was surprisingly well written.
Martin is always fascinating and I like his curiosity for hearing different perspectives.
I do like his respect for the 'reaction video' thing - there are a lot of trash reactions but there are some REALLY cool and insightful ones. The ones that talk about the music in an in depth way, instead of just 'oooh' and 'ahhh'. I guess THAT is the kind of 'Reaction Video' Pete is tired of.
The good ones are for example the Classical musicians reacting to Metal - when they break down what they hear from a totally different angle of analysis.
I agree - I've watched quite a few of The Daily Doug's videos. It's cool when he discusses the various elements of music theory as he's listening to a piece of music new to him (and that I already know). Also he'll get into the possible meaning behind the lyrics & how they tie into the music...I usually come away from those vids feeling a little smarter & having been entertained. That's what it's all about
@@wolf1977 I was about to reply to this and reference Daily Doug as a reaction show especially given his response as a classical composer and lecturer to prog, metal etc, especially given how serious and intellectual many see these genres. Getting an understanding of music theory like this is absolutely worth investing in
@@wolf1977 Early on he tended to goof on metal lyrics or just read too much into them. Nowadays he is more likely to get that some songs (and even some bands) treat lyrics as an afterthought.
Daily Doug dissections of rock music is spectacular and contagious. Early on he was making fun of bands such as Pink Floyd... Actually smoking doobies and getting high so that he could understand what the lyrics were all about. 😂

SoT is far and away the best channel of its kind, a good mix of the well known and less well known it has introduced me to a lot of new music and prompted me to revisit some I had previously put aside. As a UK listener I now have more insight and interest in the big US artists that never made much of a mark over here. If a topic isn’t for you then don’t watch it, it really is that simple. Thanks and keep up the good work everyone!
I love this channel. There's no way I could watch everything on it, so I watch the ones that cover topics I'm interested in. I think there's a lot of variety here. Some channels focus strictly on one subgenre of music and that's it. There's nothing wrong with that either.
When you can get SoT & all of those other web shows for free then there's VERY little to complain about. Get most of your non-punk content here & then seek out the punk-related discussions elsewhere - problem solved!

It’s a RUclips channel, folks. We’re not obligated to watch videos about music we don’t relate to, and SoT isn’t obligated to pander to any one of us. Pete & co. have always been clear about what they do, and they do it well. Do I watch every video religiously? No. Just the ones I find interesting because it’s about something I like or because I want to find some new shit. Am I going to rage quit the channel because Pete’s never going to review a Czarface album? Also no. There are other channels out there for whatever music you want to learn more about. If you can’t find it, start one!
I'm a punk and hardcore guy and still love your stuff.I remember I used to go to this club, One room emo/punk/ska another classic heavy rock and hair metal, and the other Indie. I think I spent more time in the rock room chilling out and thought lots of the stuff is cool so now when you mention an unfamiliar band I'll often flick over and check out some of their stuff.
Only one hair band is better than a bunch of punk band and that band is Dokken. They are my number one hair metal/glam metal/whatever you call it. It doesn't matter. But what matters is that they are my favorites out of those 80s glam metal bands. They were fantastic! Don Dokken is a great vocalist, but George Lynch is the one that made the band so great. George Lynch is a guitar god. Definitely one of the best guitarists in metal for sure. Dokken is up in my top 20 bands of all time list, either at 17 or 18. Don't know if I put them ahead of or behind Linkin Park. But 4 punk bands are ahead of Dokken, and they are Green Day, The Jam, Sum 41 and Bad Religion. I love rock and metal as well, don't get me wrong, and I'm a huge fan of a bunch of bands, both old and new.
I am in the same age range as Pete and Martin. My first album was the Sabbath compilation We Sold Out Soul For Rock and Roll. From that moment on I fell in love with music. What I have found interesting about myself that this episode made me think about was how I have constantly added new genres, but I never jettisoned what I loved before. I Loved '70s classic rock Prog, yacht rock '70s r&b, no then discovered English punk and hardcore. Then that led me into metal. I fell in love with the burgeoning thrash, death and black metal scenes of the '80s and early '90s. I'm weird because I loved that stuff but bands like Priest and Madien never did anything for me. Then I discovered Nirvana years before they blew up, which led to discovering Soundgarden Pearl jam Alice in chains etc and I couldn't get enough of that. And that led me into discovering industrial bands like Nine Inch Nails and Manxon. From there I expanded into newer metal bands like Opeth, Katatonia, Dark Tranquility to death core like Lorna Shore. I've also discovered modern country music and love acts like Miranda Lambert. Eric Church and the incredible vocal harmonies of Little Big Town. Hell I even like Taylor Swift. She is an incredible talent who knows how to write catchy earworm pop songs. This is how weird I am. I'm always playing music and in any given day I could listen to Rush, the Residents, Overkill, The Bangles, Smashing Pumpkins, Emperor, White Stripes, Brand Of Sacrifice and Sabrina Carpenter. I don't know what that makes me but I don't care because I love it all.
Completely agree - I'm a similar age, and that was my first Sabbath album too! I'll also happily listen to music from different genres - that's really the point - I'd find it pretty boring continually listening to music that sounded the same. So whilst others might consider my musical choices "odd", I've never felt the need to apologise for them - they're "my" choices and I'm happy with them. That said, I'm also happy to follow up on recommendations in case I find something else I like - but we can't listen to (let alone love) everything!
While I would like a Punk Parade as I enjoy seeing SOT explore new areas, I’m not mad that there isn’t. It’s up to Pete to decide what he wants to spend his time on.

I watch all your programming even though I may have no knowledge of the artists discussed because it so entertaining and you get the bonus of searching out what is recommended. Pete, great show as always, it hit me during your comments about variety from around 20:00-30:00 that it's the EXACT same problem that older bands have when trying to make setlists. They know that 80% of the crowd is there to only hear the same 6-8 big songs that band has over and over and will tune out for any new or old obscure song no matter how good it is. While a small percentage will complain endlessly that they have to hear the same songs over and over. It's kind of a no-win scenario.
...I've said it before and I'll say it again ...The Pete and Martin Volley on Topics in my Rock and Roll Orbit and some even stretch that Universe ( Thank the Stars ) never disappoint and I always leave with more than I came with ....Love You Guys ....All the Damn Time !
I mostly tune in for the Metal and Hard Rock content but I don't get upset over the prog stuff. I don't listen to much prog but I do enjoy some Jethro Tull, Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, Gentle Giant. I am just too busy with all the hard and heavy sub genres to dive deeper into prog. Appreciate all you do Pete. To me your channel already has HUGE variety.
Should check Van der graff generator it's prog but it's quite heavy too. But you should also give a chance to prog .

Opeth, Dream Theater, Queensryche, Between the Buried and Me and Gojira are a couple of great examples of great prog metal bands. But I do love The Moody Blues and Pink Floyd. I also do love Genesis. But I do love progressive metal a lot. I have a Queensryche patch on my denim jacket because I saw them live twice which is awesome! My dad is a huge fan and on one of the most recent albums he bought, there were some patches, and my mom thought I should put it in my jacket and I said ok. I also have a Pink Floyd patch as well. I want to put The Moody Blues very badly, the patches look terrible unfortunately, so I'll never get a Moody Blues patch, which sucks. I do have some metal and punk patches on my jacket. But at least I got a Death patch!

Martin, it's great that you discovered The Sound. Strangely enough they were never successful in their native England, but over here in the Low Countries (Belgium/ The Netherlands) they had a huge following.
This episode is my bottom line in why I have not gone ahead started my own channel. It just seems so frustrating. SOT is a great channel and kudos for you and your efforts in effective programming. AND GUESS WHAT? There is hundreds of other channels that I can subscribe to if I should tune in to something that I don’t want to hear or watch at the moment on SOT. Amazing that this channel surfing, short attention span world can’t move on to find something that will entertain them, but instead drop comments on how you need to address their needs and interests.
Pete, this episode displays the point that some people complain about everything. You never hide or mislead your tastes. I have similar tastes as yours so that's why I watch. It's OK not like everything!

From The Lions Mouth is a favorite of mine:)........I'll never understand the mindset of a person who, if they like X,Y,Z music, are unable to seek and find a content creator who shares the same interests. There's tons of music channels on Y.T. Ignorance is abundant.

I will tell you this I started watching this channel for the metal and classic rock. What you have done for me is opened my eyes to genres like prog and fusion. I love bands like Gentle Giant and Porcupine Tree among others. I continue to learn about new bands and performers nearly each time I watch. And I look forward to the Monsters Den. The shows about the old universal horror and Hammer movies take
Me back to childhood. But seriously SOT has for sure broadened my horizons. Keep up the work and I'll keep watching bro.

Also on this subject, growing up with punk ive always had a fascination with the pre punk stuff, some of that would fit into the "rock" criteria, the UK stuff like Chiswick records, Hammersmith Gorillas, Incredible Kidda band, Dr Feelgood and the pub rock stuff of the early 70s. and the US stuff like The stooges, The NYC stuff, New York Dolls, Death, Third world war (Jello Biafra of the Dead Kennedys was a fan)
SOT has never been shy about explaining that they cover bands that interest them and if you're interested in those bands, congratulations! You've found a channel that covers the things you want to hear about! I can't tell you how many bands I discovered through Pete and SOT. He's covered so many genres and bands that I had never heard of that I wonder how he had time to discover all of them himself! Keep doing what you do Pete! You've always provided a wide variety of content that pushes the limits of your audience's awareness and understanding. There have been many bands and or albums that I was aware of and listened to, that I just didn't get, that all these years later (on SOT's recommendation/illumination), I have gone back to and found quality music that I enjoy immensely now. Thanks for your hard work and a big thank you to the panelists like Martin that you've marshaled together to make content with!
I stumbled across SOT due to RUclips AI telling me that I might like the channel. I believe it was a ranking the Stones albums which is probably my favorite band. I have to admit a lot of the bands mentioned on the channel I don’t get and never will. I definitely lean towards alt/punk music but I feel I have enough knowledge on that genre that I don’t need SOT to have a specific show on the topic. I watch SOT to find out about music and bands I normally wouldn’t investigate. I’ve discovered some great new metal, stoner rock and even prog bands that I’m glad I took the time to listen to.
Pete very good show. The short answer is: you do you. To me life/music listening is a Venn diagram: some tastes and choices will intersect with others, then some will diverge wildly. Am I disappointed you do not discuss ambient, avant garde, or what is now deemed "weird" (I have seen it in multiple record stores)? No. There are other ways to glean into those genres. Keep on your path; it is appreciated,
I would like to thank Martin for literally just introducing me to the band The Sound. I have just come out of a one hour RUclips rabbit hole. I rarely act on recommendations (being that older, jaded kinda guy) but I’m so glad you managed to pique my interest. That is post punk at its absolute finest. I can’t believe this band didn’t make it to at least the level of an Echo and the Bunnymen. Tragic and an even more tragic outcome to the lead singer. Thanks again Martin

@@billymac72 I just did - they're also new to me (The Sound). I'm actually finding A LOT to like - their six studio albums are all at least pretty good. I don't like the "post punk" label (or most sub-genres tagged as 'post'). To me they're a punkish New Wave, too melodic for 'real' punk. They do have an album called Propaganda released in 1999 that's apparently their actual debut album from '79. That one's closer to punk & more raw-sounding (and the one I wasn't into as much).
I think I'm gonna make a new playlist for myself: this stuff, The Fixx, some Talking Heads, The Vapors, The Plimsouls, The Jags, some Cars - good stuff...Still need to listen to a few of their EP's & live albums...
The same thing happened to me about eight years ago. I randomly discovered The Sound and Adrian Borland on RUclips and was drawn in. And I'm more of a classic/indie rock guy. I clicked on The Sound's Jeapardy album just for kicks and was hooked. Then I did the reaearch on the band and more importantly, Adrian Borland. I believe he was truly a tormented genius. He should be way more widely recognized. For anyone wanting to check out him or the band I recommend starting out with the band's first two albums: Jeopardy and From the Lion's Mouth. Then check out the live album: In the Hothouse. Then Borland's solo album: 5:00 am.
@@wolf1977 they’re very melodic, and that’s one of the top criteria’s for me always. Got a real edge to them also. I would say they are a cross between Wire & XTC (musically) with the lyrical slant of Joy Division. Never a fan of JD though, find them too gloomy
@@jjvermeer Listening to some solo Adrian Borland, looks like he's got something like 7 releases including an album of demos. So far so good, sounds in line with The Sound (not really punk-I'd say ALT rock) - pretty melodic. 5:00am seems more introspective with slower tracks but it's good. The more upbeat numbers ("City Speed", "Stray Bullets") are excellent. The Amsterdam Tapes is another good one & Beautiful Ammunition, and to a lesser extent Cinematic. Didn't like the acoustic The Last Days Of The Rain Machine as much...Sometimes I get U2 vibes (but a more ALT version)
Yes there are times the fan worship on the shows turn me off but it wouldn't say they were bad shows. If I don't sync with the topic,I don't watch. I'd prefer more ranking shows but I am one viewer amoung thousands and I get it. They deserve to see stuff on their likes. Sometimes I get turned on to something and it's like 😊. Keep up the good work SOT crew.

The Pardo/Popoff "Funhouse" show is my favorite show; I think the reason it resonates with me is because it gets into some really deep levels of observation into the minds of music fans and how they tick, and gets a good look at the landscape of opinions.
Personally I like that Sea of Tranquility is holding up the banner for the straight-ahead / non-alternative side of rock music (metal, hard rock, AOR, Southern rock, prog rock, fusion). SOT provides a LOT of variety within that set of themes. Martin is more of a punk/post-punk/new wave/power pop fan whereas Pete isn't at all, so you get a little bit of that from Martin on the Funhouse show. But there is so much obsession over punk and alternative elsewhere, so I don't have to have it here (not to mention that genre set gets a little too pretentious for its own good a lot of times, and I'm not here for the pretention, I'm here for the music).
Pete is correct that not everything that SOT covers is things I like. I'm not a horror / comic fan, and I don't like nu-metal or most extreme metal. Also regarding the album reviews, I'm wary of current music because of 1) the "copies of copies of copies" issue that Martin mentions and 2) I HATE Loudness War mastering, and almost all the current albums are guaranteed to have it.
On the other hand, speaking of obscure music, I love to learn about obscure albums from this channel. Pete's "Ranking the Albums" is one of my favorite shows because its helps give me overviews of lesser-known artists' catalogs. The HAWKWIND episode was incredibly helpful with untangling that messy discography, and the SAGA one led me right to their AOR albums of the late 1980s, some of which I've now listened myself sick on. Also the Pardo/Popoff Funhouse "Problem Children Part 1" episode led me to "Breath of the Pit" (2014) by ALGY WARD'S TANK, which is still the heaviest metal album I've EVER heard and one I listen to a LOT. Where has that album been all my life, and why isn't more metal like that? 😳
I too am a little unnerved to hear IRON MAIDEN, MERCYFUL FATE and KISS referred to as novelty acts; you remove the exterior visuals and you have some really incredible and well-composed and played music, as Pete says. Ah well, you can't agree with everything; on the other hand, I love MAGMA and think Pete's hatred of that group is hilariously entertaining.
The Loudness thing pretty much started because around 1993, a couple records came out which were made loud so that they would stand out, especially when played on a car stereo. And the next we knew, more and more bands were complaining that their albums wouldn't be "competitive". Contrary to what many believe, it wasn't labels or producers who are to blame, especially WRT to bigger artists. It was the artists themselves who typically demand a louder mix and master.
@@ryanjacobson2508 This is a great point! The artists finally got what they wanted, and it sucks. In fact, in the 1980s and prior the labels were notorious for always wanting to turn the volume down.
The earliest Loudness War master I know of is "Broken" (1992) by Nine Inch Nails, and it's been, ahem, a "Downward Spiral" ever since.
I think I discovered SOT and reaction videos around the same time. I have found value in some reaction channels, particularly with one like Lost in Vegas. The fun part is that it’s like a substitute for playing music that you enjoy for someone who’s never heard it. But with LiV in particular, they genuinely seemed to have realized that there’s a whole other world of music out there that they enjoy. And they articulate their analysis well, and just show genuine excitement when something sounds great. When they flipped out over Blackwater Park, it was about specific things they heard that I never paid attention to. So that increased my own enjoyment and rediscovery of music I had already known for a long time. We certainly don’t have to like everything, but it really feels great when something finally clicks.
There is loads of variety and from most shows I get to know new bands and bands I have never heard of.
I have discovered so many new bands and 😂revisited older bands thanks to SOT
As a fan of every genre you guys cover, it's a pleasure to hear about bands I love and learn about stuff I've never heard of ( Birth, Jalayan, & Riverside being a few examples of bands I've learned of from you) for the last 10 odd years I've been following the channel. Martin is a local hero, as a guy that grew up in the 90's in Toronto. Keep up the great work! Fuck the haters!
A few thoughts: 1. The original purpose of this channel was to review new releases. Never stop that even though they are not your most watched shows. 2. Some of my favorite shows are when you discuss obscure artists (especially late 60's, early 70's; which I missed first time around). I have discovered a lot of great music by watching these shows. 3. Don't worry about covering other genres that you're not comfortable with. There is a lot of music I love that is not covered here. That's fine. there is plenty of other channels and media for me to watch. I'm here mainly for everything but Metal. Keep up the great content
That was my favorite part about the channel too…the more obscure 60’s and 70’s bands, but haven’t seen much of that in a long time which is why I don’t tune in as frequently as I used to. I’m a big fan of post punk/goth/alternative etc., obviously there are other channels for that, that’s fine if it’s not Pete’s thing…we all like different stuff, I can’t stand modern prog metal bands or stuff like Dream Theatre for instance. The Monster’s Den is good fun though, I still make a point to tune in over there.
@@sixbladeknife44 On the obscure '60s and '70s artists-- sometimes, when Pete does his weekly new album reviews, he covers new releases by pretty obscure '60s and '70s bands. Sometimes, these are new releases of unreleased music from the bands' archives, and sometimes, they are reissues of older albums by obscure artists. Good stuff!
@@christianman73 That Forgotten Favorites show was the one I always looked forward to the most since it's a passion of mine to hunt down 'obscure'/unknown 70's rock albums/bands. And seemed like (from memory) that many of the viewer comments were along the lines of "thanks for covering this band/album x - I didn't know about this..."
@@wolf1977 I agree-- the Forgotten Favorites series was so great! I have learned about far more cool obscure music from SOT than any other music channel. This is still the case, in an ongoing way, for me, today.
@@christianman73 Since Pete seems to have 'retired' that particular show - I could've sworn that at some point late last year he said that it'd come back as a monthly series...If you have the patience check out a YT channel by The Gladiator Of Rock. Pretty much all 60's & 70's lesser-known albums. I've found some real gems there, he's posted tons of music over the years (literally hundreds). The only thing is that he doesn't index the album tracks like some do (which makes it super easy to identify each song on the album)
Pete SOT is a people channel we talk etc, its a community and its the best.
It's strange Pete I don't listen to much prog rock, but when it delves into progressive metal it really gets my attention.
I've went back a few times to those excellent shows with Steven Reid Riverside and IQ are great examples, Haken was great as well, so more programmes with Steven delving into prog bands which delve into prog metal would be welcome. 👍
Opeth, Dream Theater, Queensryche, Between the Buried and Me and Gojira are my favorite progressive metal bands! I also considered Death to be progressive metal as well! Those are my favorites! Although I also love The Moody Blues and Pink Floyd. I have 4 progressive bands on my top 40, and they are The Moody Blues, Pink Floyd, Death and Opeth. These bands have a ton of talented musicians and are some of the best. And I'm also into symphonic metal as well. I love Nightwish, Within Temptation, Epica, Delain, Leave Eyes and After Forever. Those are my favorite symphonic metal bands! I don't give a shit about power metal! That is total bullshit to me, with a few exceptions of anyone that was associated to Helloween after they left the band.
fascinating discussion - I'm apparently one of those weird people who is constantly looking for something new, be it brand new releases or 50 years old that I've somehow missed until now. Great stuff - this is why I always look forward to the funhouse on Fridays!
Popoff and Pardo are at it again with an interesting discussion of something a little different than another musical theme. The intersection of knowledge, personal passions, life experiences, and other factors come into play. Some people seek comfort and affirmation; others seek new frontiers. Many seek both. SoT generally wears its heart on its sleeve. Older than both members of the funhouse so personal experiences definitely are influenced by growing up in the 60s and early 70s. One of the more obvious impacts of that - at least personally - is growing up with strong AM radio presence where you heard all types of music - rock, blues, soul, R & B, pop, and on and on - coupled with parents whose divergent musical tastes included big band, classical, New Orleans jazz, vocalists and a house where everyone played or learned an instrument [or two]. Though it has become increasingly difficult to watch every SoT program and life opened back up after the pandemic, continue to watch as much as can be fit. The value of SoT is the personalities and sincerity, or perhaps better, integrity, of those appearing in the program. Real personalities shine through and that, along with continued exposure to new 'new' music as well as new 'old' music is what keeps returning me to the channel. Thanks, gents for a fascinating discussion of what interests you and how you approach these particular instances in your careers and musical lives. There ya go!
Punk has never been my thing but I do like some bands that have punkish tendencies....that have been touched my the shadows of punkiness....like early Pretenders, The Clash, and Green Day. Good show, guys. Thanks.

I think I've been following this YT show for at least 3-4 years, but this show is the really the only thing I watch. I've caught a few episodes of the prog seat and the metal discussion. Really enjoy the Pardo/Popoff shows.
A good episode. I have said this before this is Pete's Channel so he can do his channel whatever he wants. Like he you like what you like. If don't like certain topics of music you don't you don't have to watch. Just watch what topics that you are into.
I don't miss Hudson Valley Squares or Friday Fun house. I have bought albums based on your review. I definitely came to hear about bands or albums that got passed by
Really great episode. I love my metal, which is what keeps me coming back. But I love punk and post punk, especially Television, Ha ha! Respect both of you and and have revisited and come to appreciate so many bands I didn’t get into back in the day. Keep up the great work! I love both punk and metal. I never really understand the debate between these two. I think that's bullcrap about debating which is better or what you listen to. It's ridiculous. Both punk and metal have great bands. If I'm in a mood of listening to a punk band, I'd go ahead and listen to that punk band. If I want to listen to a metal band, I'd also go ahead and listen to that metal band. It depends on the mood I'm in and if I want to listen to it or not. Other days, I go back and listen to some of my favorite bands, and I go, yeah, that's some awesome stuff. This band definitely rocks.

I love your channel. Sometimes I learn things about bands I never have heard before, sometimes I learn things about bands I thought I would know everything about. And to me the mix is absolutely ok. I remember last week watching the ranking of "November". Man, such a great band I never heard a single note of before. Also the live album show. I have tons of live records and sometimes I simply forget about the pure greatness of some of these works. Some weeks ago I discovered "Strange Highways" by Dio. Man I was thirty years old when that album was released and didn´t know about it. Always thought of "Rainbow Rising" as his biggest Dio record and even didn´t get the Black Sabbath releases with Dio on vocals. Two weeks ago I bought "Heaven and Hell" and "Mob Rules" and they´re on heavy rotation!
I'm actually into progressive music, some metal, AND punk.... and I believed the joke, simply because Martin was involved, that made it believable for me. Having said that, I'm also not disappointed. Everybody likes different things. I'm not watching SOT for the punk content, LOL. I'm perfectly happy with the programming here.

I knew it was a joke right off the bat 😂. To ppl who took it seriously, c’mon! I absolutely love this channel and watch almost all of the content. The reasons I watch as much as I can is that I can revisit the things I love and find new things to check out. I’ve discovered so many great bands/albums and enjoy the perspectives from everyone. If you’re coming here for a genre that isn’t covered, there are so many other places to check those things out. I don’t watch a video about Fear or Black Flag and expect them to mention Uriah Heep.
I agree w/some of the posters here. This isn't the only channel I tune in or subscribe to. I mainly come for the bands I love, and this channel actually covers like Led Zeppelin, The Stones, Whitesnake, Def Leppard and Van Halen. I love bands this show does not cover like INXS, U2 and Depeche Mode. But I've found another channel and host, who I have great discussions with, who does cover those bands. I understand that this channel isn't for all genres of music, but it doesn't mean I can voice my disappointment. Anyway, this is a free country and, if I don't like it, I can go somewhere else.
Or you could support other RUclipsrs. Sea of Tranquility isn't the only RUclipsr that talks about music. There are a ton of channels that talk about music. Bryce Talks Metal is a great example of a RUclipsr who talks about music.

Underappreciated is a too often used term for actually revered musicians who maybe aren't as popular as others (like Ian Paice vs. Bonham. Surely not that famous, but I've often read of other drummers praising him), but for The Sound it certainly fits. A great band with a hugely talented frontman. And certainly with an edge with his mental illness, his struggles with it often reflected in his lyrics.
In The Netherlands they enjoyed some popularity and could be heard on alternative radio at the time (lucky for me).
I watch SOT BECAUSE you guys have a lot of variety and cover music that I’ve listen to all my life. It’s fun to hear the panels and the variety of opinions that are here. I understand how hard it is to do show after show and keep everything fresh. You guys do a great job.
For me, it's all about the discovery, whether it's about some music I don't know or about facts I don't know about artists I like...I love hearing about all genres covered on SoT and you guys make it interesting. Plus, I buy records everyday, so I need fuel and ideas. I have to say that what got me hooked on the channel was the "One and done" series that Pete did during Covid. The only show I don't watch on SoT is the Monster's Den.

No point covering a band or an album you know little about and just don't feel. It would be like me trying to write a book on opera.
My question would be... "Who are actually reading the comments". You have to be an incredible day speed reader to even pull up the interesting questions moving forward here. Obviously the bigger bands are big because they should be. The smaller folk trying to live the dream are trying their best to become noticed by influencers like this channel. I think at this point in 2023 that lots of talented got UNNOTICED the past few decades because of Corporatization methods. What a shame. However, there were many acts and great bands that gave that chance to artists over the years. I think this country is built strong enough to rebuild here and give another chance to the many artists who deserve that chance that felt that they were left without hope. Love the channel Peter and love the insights with all of your shows and podcasts. My favorite shows are with Martin. So much history to learn from. I thought I did my research over the years and them you all talk about an obscure act or band/artist. We all have to keep educating our youth or else we are all doomed in the real POST FUTURE that timeline #2 is fading but still in front of us all.

I have a friend who's definitely into metal, but he's more into metalcore and deathcore, so modern metal. Metalcore yes, deathcore, meh for me in my eyes. I'm an old head when it comes to metal, but they are a ton of great modern metal bands out there. I meant to say that I'm an old soul. 26-year-old man who loves older music, but I still love modern rock/metal. I love gothic/symphonic metal, especially with a front woman in the band. And they are way more attractive than a majority of pop stars nowadays. And I'm also into punk, but I have a rough time finding other friends who like punk and would like to come and see these shows with me. Plus, I enjoy both punk and metal. I don't get this debate at all. It's total bullshit! Plus, Lars Frederiksen of Rancid who's punk also loves metal.
Plus, my high school is very hip-hop and R&B oriented. Not really the biggest rap fan at all, except for some nu metal. And R&B nowadays just bore the fuck out of me! 60s/70s was the golden age of R&B. And I'm not going to a rap/r&b show anytime soon. Plus, I have to pay for my own ticket, which I have no plans on doing that, when the shows I want to go to are rock/metal/alternative.
And depending on the day, if I want to listen to punk, I'll go and listen to some punk. If I want to listen to metal, I'll go and listen to metal. It depends on what I want to listen to. I just go for it and listen to whatever I like. And I enjoy every single minute of it.

Interesting show today gentlemen. I’ll start off by saying you can’t please everyone. I give you guys credit for coming up with new content. That has to be challenging. The subject matter not only has to please the fans but you as hosts as well. Honestly, I don’t watch every show/topic and that’s okay. I will say I thoroughly enjoy the new album review segments. discovering new music is a treat. Reaction videos….have to be honest, never watched one. Chance that I do is slim. In summary, keep doing what you do. I find most of the episodes entertaining and that’s why we watch, right, to be entertained and while at the same time hopefully learn something.
I find it amazing that people would complain there is ‘no variety’ on Sea of Tranquility. The channel covers a wide range of rock and metal genres all the spectrum between extreme metal and jazz fusion. And some people will complain its too diverse while others bemoan the lack of emphasis on punk and alternative. But I appreciate you make the effort to include a wide range and cover the classics, review new stuff by famous and obscure artists. No one else really covers that range so the ‘lack of variety’ allegation is particularly ignorant, in my view.
There are channels out there that only cover black metal for instance. That’s a niche sub genre of a niche genre (extreme metal) in the first place! 🤣 But no one will go there and accuse them of lack of variety because its a small insular community of music fans in the first place. (Again nothing wrong with that but more awareness is appropriate).

Just 'discovered' The Sound as a result of this episode! Some good stuff...Briefly listened to The Wipers but they take a step closer to punk (and sacrifice a lot of melody which is a problem for me) versus say The Sound, which is too close for me. Based on their first 3 albums

SoT reminds me of hanging with my friends... bringin your new LP's talking music in our basements having a few cold ones...We had similar taste but not exactly the same .. so I picked up some favs and others didn't stick.and turned others on to a few ......it was communal and as an old dude that isn't happening otherwise .. 😀
I never knew that Suicidal Tendencies were considered Punk because they were always in the Metal section at the store and their videos were played on Power Hour which was a Metal show.
there were many bands in the 80s that crossed over into metal. ST, COC, Cro-Mags, TSOL, DRI, Agnostic Front...and then you had "alternative" bands like The Cult and FNM too. Even Bowie went metal in the 80s with Tin Machine.
Crossover, they were punk but soon got more metal, check out their first album, its hardcore punk

@@wernermoritz882 well, "metal" may be too strong, but they were definitely hard rock. the pt. was that many bands were "crossing over" into harder or heavier territory because of metals popularity at the time. commitment could vary by artist.
@@independenceltd. yes, they are pretty heavy but not metal. They don‘t have metal guitar tones or aesthetics (no shredding) but would totally fit into early alternative rock though. A lot of noise rock in there, too.
As someone who does like all the genres you cover here, keep fighting the good fight. If there's pockets of genre you don't like, that's fine. The one thing about RUclips: if there's something you are into (legal!), there's someone talking about it somewhere.
I think that a YT Channel is to the general public, more or less, viewed as a TV program. Music may def be a big part of a YT Music Channel, but another important and integral part is the personalities on the Channel. So, they may tune into HVS just to watch the personalities, even if the aren't into the topic.

Martin brings such an interesting perspective to SoT...my first love back in1979 was metal but as it stagnated in the mid 80s my tastes shifted/expanded to bands such as husker du REM to rap and so much more.. sticking to just 'rock' is so limiting..open eyes and open ears people !!
I'd guess at least half of my created Playlist are SoT related - ranking albums, funhouse, UK Connection, the alphabet Prog Seats, etc.
I'm almost 56, and there was a whole lot of stuff that I never really was able to explore a lot of bands at the time, and being able to have a guide(s) who have a ton of knowledge and history with those bands allows me to have a guideline to explore their catalog and which albums to start with/avoid.
I probably watch 80% of SoT videos, if one is on a topic I don't really know about, it is a learning experience. If I'm not interested in a band or topic I just don't watch, I don't complain.
The only real question is - how do you find time to listen all these albums?

I'm a fan of *many* punk bands, but I've *never* understood people coming to SOT and being surprised, or upset, that Pete doesn't feature punk bands and albums on this channel (except for when Martin speaks on them, as he is a fan). SOT is Pete's channel. He runs it, and he's not a punk fan. For me, that's the end of the matter. He covers *so many genres* here. Punk is not one of them, and that's fine.
Yet when he does videos live, some people, including me do talk about punk. At least I get to talk with other people about my favorite albums or bands by punk bands.

I just don't understand why some people come to SOT and *actually complain about Pete* not covering punk, indie, and/or new wave bands in *his own videos* for SOT, which is his channel. Pete's not a punk, indie, or new wave fan. Why would anyone expect him to cover genres that he doesn't enjoy in his own videos for his own channel? Martin Popoff likes punk, and Pete knows that, so when Martin is in an SOT video, sometimes he brings up a punk band. However, on his own, Pete almost never talks about punk, because he doesn't like it, and it's his channel. He covers the music that he personally enjoys here. It's that simple, and I see no reason for me, or anyone, to have a problem with it.
@@christianman73 in the livecharts, we get to talk about whatever stuff we like to other people. I don't always just talk about punk. If Black Sabbath gets mentioned for example, I can talk about them because they're awesome 👍. It really depends if I want to contribute or have a conversation with someone about a band I've been listening to recently.

I used to try to participate in the live chats, but I found that for myself, I just prefer watching the videos first, and then commenting later, in the comment sections. Just my choice. I can't focus on chatting and watching a video at the same time. If people were actually discussing the video in the live chat more often, I might enjoy it more, but too often, it seemed to me that people were discussing anything and everything except the video which was debuting, so I stopped trying to partake in the live chats. I'm glad that other people enjoy them though.

I think Martin has been watching Beth Roars and The Daily Doug.😃You should do a show about Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole and Ella Fitzgerald. That'll show 'em! I like this channel because it's eclectic. I'm more of a 1960's-1970's music person but love watching Hudson Valley Squares to hear about some ultra obscure Swedish death metal band I've never heard of. I like the UK connection because it's like watching a comedy team doing a routine. I'm a huge prog fan so I love In the Prog Seat. Friday's with Martin is great. I love music and like hearing and learning new things and this channel fits my need..

Punk is an ethos for me. I love some punk bands and couldn't care less about some others. Just a matter of personal taste. But I really love the ethos that drives and inspires the music. Metal is the same for me, Prog, you name it. I also really like it when I get into a band later on that maybe I hated or ignored years earlier. I find that's at least one bonus of getting older lol
I am pretty much the same with punk and other genres, though I am not a metal fan really, some of the Prog metal bands I like though, but not Dream Theater lol.
Very informative show this week. I am glad is was discussed in detail. It allowed me to better appreciate the format.
I love it all: Hard rock, prog, metal, pop, some punk, fusion etc. I suggest Pete forming a show on Stoner music and new bands.

I disagree with Martin in “why listen to new music?” I’m always listening to new releases. Yet I am doing the very thing Martin talked about. I’m finding out about a band from the past, in an era of music important to me, that is mostly unknown to me. I’m very excited. I listened to the band’s first album. I was a little critical because I felt it was sticking too much to the past. It did have a couple songs towards the end that was more in the direction I like. I hope that may indicate where the band is going. I’m very eager to hear their other releases, see what direction the band will take. While it is very exciting to dig deeper into the past and discover things you don’t know about, I say it is important to keep moving ahead with what’s currently going on. Again, I'm finding this a good discussion.
Punk and post punk i already know about. I come here for an alternative view to the critics narrative that punk saved rock and prog rock is all bad. Thank you for a great show i watch daily
