My school has a smartboard even now. But they are so unuseful that our school stopped using them and put projectors with wireless keyboards and mouses instead. Jamboard is way cooler than a smartboard. But maybe a smartboard is enough for the hardware while you use the Jamboard software via the website.
For teachers and academics, an electronic whiteboard that would instantaneously turn handwritten notes into typesetting ones, including math, would be extremely valuable.
+Stranger Happened How are you going to show the table to a room of people? Genius. The normal whiteboard is a vertical and, hence, less ergonomic version of the normal table. smh
+Stranger Happened It's abundantly clear that you've never worked as a team in an interactive way... You don't want to constantly stand when something is explaining/drawing something on the whiteboard. A normal display isn't enough because people are frequently getting up and drawing/explaining their own ideas. I have worked as a team in an interactive way and I've also used the Microsoft Table (i.e. Surface). I've even written my own drawing application for the Microsoft Table. I do think what Google is coming up with is way better and way more ergonomic than the Microsoft Table. The only thing I'm skeptical about is the cost. They haven't announced it yet but whiteboards are dirt cheap. I don't know if the advantages are going to outweigh the cost.
+Stranger Happened But the scenarios for which the Google Jamboard is made, don't require work with your hands flying high for any prolonged time. That's just not how these kinds of meetings work. The whiteboard in meeting rooms is not meant for working (long periods of time), it's meant for writing down ideas drawing things to make them clear to your audience. It's not meant for constantly drawing or working at all.
+Stranger Happened You make it seem as if humans can't write on a board for more than a minute straight without injuries... First of all, these meetings don't require you to continuously write on the board. Secondly, you're not alone. There are other people that will write on the board. You seem to forget that whiteboards are already used for these kind of things. This Jamboard is making the traditional whiteboard more ergonomic than it already was. I've never heard anyone complain about the ergonomics of the traditional whiteboard. So I can't imagine anyone complaining about a version with better ergonomics. Just face it dude. There is no way you can have any productive meetings on a table. But how can you know if you have 0 experience with team meetings.
Awesome! This will be amazing when it's cheap enough to use in public schools as it will hold the pupils' attention and stick in their memory so much better than standard chalkboards or whiteboards with plain written text.
This price point puts it in direct competition with Smartboards and I think that's a great move. With a little more refinement, I can definitely see devices like these being more and more commonplace in business or education environments.
it's funny to see how they implemented their neural networks from the doodle game to the characters and using an mnist data set to convert the handwriting to text.
These will absolutely be the boards for well funded schools in the 2020s, and badly funded schools in the 2030s. The advantages over whiteboards, just as whiteboards over blackboards, will be clearer with time, better pricing, utility, and user friendliness. (We already have 'smartboards', but its still exception, not rule.)
Well that function is already included in Windows 10 for 2 years. And actually the Whiteboard App seems superior, because people can interact in the same time on the Board, but the Google Jamboard is more likely Skype Conference Video Chat when the function of sharing your Desktop with the Person you are talking to, but not giving him a chance to interact with what he is seeing. I may be wrong with that statement but that's what I get from the video I just saw - limited to just seeing what the person you are talking to is doing on his desk, but not able to interact.
Not to mention is the Microsoft Whiteboard will likely going to end up with Surface Hub, which based on what I saw from this video, the Surface Hub still looks more superior. There is another thing that Jamboard don't offer an app for Windows 10, especially that many runs on Windows and a chance of sporting a Windows hybrids/2-in-1s. Yes, there are more iPads and Android tablets out there especially for BYOD, so does the Whiteboard app is. Which this makes Surface Hub at the moment a bit more cross-platform I think.
NerdishAzn it's not dude. The app is free "spark". I use it. The spark board registers to their cloud services similar to google's. No on premises tech other than internet connection.
Francis Bitterworth That's why Microsoft does not have a 100 million Office 365 monthly active users. And G Suite is kicking its ass. Because people does not use it in modern offices. Lol.
www.nytimes.com/2017/05/13/technology/google-education-chromebooks-schools.html?_r=0 google shipped almost 8 million laptops to schools in 2016 Microsoft and Apple a little over 2 million... +Brendan Bergman check your facts buddy
no need for a separate projector or computer it seems. no longer need to replace the bulbs in the projector. when factoring the costs of contracting installation of each individual device it adds up quick, so this is a more affordable alternative when thinking about replacing or upgrading from the older technology.
Don't throw the schools out. We are craving screens bigger than 55''. Promethean and Smartboard offer 75''-85'' projection screens. The last row of students in the class can't see a lot.
I am an apple fanboy since my childhood and I’ve always loved the way apple approaches like for example seperate os for tablets and laptops. But apple products are meant for official purpose but why they didn’t release this type of product which microsoft and google did?
it would be so cool to see and apple smartboard they could sell a class set that comes with the board 25 ipads and 26 pencils for the price of like just the pads and pencils
I can see where technology is headed but still sluggish.. I think the real problem is that majority of tech people are probably obsessed with trying to shock the world with something extraordinary instead of coming up with the quickest and simplest solutions that solves the problem in a humble way..
how much did Google pay you guys and why don't you guys review Microsoft's Surface Hub which has been around for much longer since you guys are suddenly into office tech?
The idea of having this as a teacher is making me drool. This would be AMAZING!
They had these in schools ages ago called SMARTBoards
different technology, 4k, Shared over google GSuite

This is actually a cool and truly useful technology
lol

This is so simple but such a fantastic product!!! Wow, I really want one!
Awesome! This will be amazing when it's cheap enough to use in public schools as it will hold the pupils' attention and stick in their memory so much better than standard chalkboards or whiteboards with plain written text.
Your "terrible handwriting" is actually really nice. It's no wonder it can be picked up by google so well.
Elliot Demeny L hold this
67 people thought that was really good handwriting 😱
You really think this is good?
Exactly.
Did they tell you guys not to mention surface hub at all?
I know right
... And there is Surface Hub 2 now.
This price point puts it in direct competition with Smartboards and I think that's a great move. With a little more refinement, I can definitely see devices like these being more and more commonplace in business or education environments.

"Giant Crayon" you mean chalk?
No because chalk would come out white.
The Fearmoths Different colored chalk exists...
Just looked it up and you're right. My mind has been blown! Does it taste any different?
He's a millennial in tech, you think he has kids of his own to know the difference? NO.
buttonstack Is it necessary to have children to understand the difference between crayons and chalk?
"There's no real technology here, you just start writing and it works"
Aha alright.
The perfect quarantine collaboration tool
I want one!! Thanks for sharing @Verge
In other words it's an actual Smartboard and not an outdated projector system that is called "smart"
Definitely technology advances every day, I like this video, good job
Best gadget for producer! I can think of a million things I could use it!
This one really is a useful product. Though I would not even consider buying that screen. I would like to see this on a Chromebook.
It's like a future whiteboard for school
These will absolutely be the boards for well funded schools in the 2020s, and badly funded schools in the 2030s. Wow! This is much slicker than MS's version. Love how the strokes animate.
Basically a giant tablet.
Google has done it again!! Amazing!!!
now Google has one! Let the fight versus Microsoft Hub, *BEGIN!!!*
I can't wait until these are more commonplace!
How does it compare to the Surface Hub?
looks the same as the Microsoft's Whiteboard App introduced today in the China Conference
Except slicker. Check out how things animate and how handwriting automatically gets converted to text.

Futuristic board
Do this on an iPad pro with the apple pencil, mirror the screen on any TV with apple TV.
You can stay on your chair. and pass the iPad around.
NerdishAzn www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collaboration-endpoints/spark-board/index.html
NerdishAzn it's not dude. The app is free "spark". I use it. The spark board registers to their cloud services similar to google's. No on premises tech other than internet connection.
This is pretty cool. EXPENSIVE, but cool!
I have a thing at my school called a smartboard and it's just like this
ON THE VERGE ALWAYS 😝
Hangouts hasn't moved on AT ALL in years so I've finally ditched it.
This is a gorgeous looking productivity device. I just love you Google 😍. Someday!!!
The white backlight burns my eyes. I would be more interested if it were an AMOLED screen with perfect black background (and white text).
I wonder where did they got the idea from.... (Microsoft Hub + OneNote)
The Hub doesn't pretty much all of that and even more way better.
So you are telling me they put Microsoft OneNote on a big touchscreen? Because it does all of that including the collaboration.
Except OneNote has a long history of not working. XD But maybe it does these days.
I prefer Surface Hub
Agreed!
Like a smart board?
I hope the Jamboard app can be used even only between tablets, it seems amazing!

Where r u guys? So many things came out and no reviews? No coverage of the microsoft event? ☹️
Wow!!! its interesting, google is always a step ahead from all technologies to build up a new era of simple and useful techs.
Prateek Solanki Microsoft already beat them a long time ago. It's called the surface hub
"Ubiquitous in modern offices" apart from those using Microsoft products
Our whole office had to switch everything back to Office 365 because Google Apps for Work was way too feature incomplete at best and buggy at worse...
***** I beg to differ
Francis Bitterworth That's why Microsoft does not have a 100 million Office 365 monthly active users. And G Suite is kicking its ass. Because people does not use it in modern offices. Lol.
ThePharmacist Most schools use Microsoft products

This is so cool. I would love it, to work at home.
will the Software be available for other pen devices?
I'm confused, what makes this different from the smart board my school got in 2006?
no need for a separate projector or computer it seems. no longer need to replace the bulbs in the projector. when factoring the costs of contracting installation of each individual device it adds up quick, so this is a more affordable alternative when thinking about replacing or upgrading from the older technology.
ah. when i used to do this with my best friends.
So, basically kinda like a Surface Hub?
Three words: Microsoft Surface Hub.
Four words: Google sponsored this video.
How do I get it ie buy it in Lagos State, Nigeria in Africa. I needed about three. Link me up on how to make purchase now.
so basically a dumb down version of the Surface Hub.
I would love to see a comparison between the Jamboard and the Surface Hub!
What about palm rejection while writing?
Googles next goal now is probably making the jamboard 3-5x bigger to put in school...
This man actually got a date using the jamboard I'm proud
So can you not run apps on it? Like Netflix or games?
yay, Lauren !
Woah, it reminds me of a smartboard! Acculay, thinking about it, its like a cheaper, smaller smartboard.
Cool, but Microsoft onenote does this already pretty good!
Don't throw the schools out. We are craving screens bigger than 55''. Promethean and Smartboard offer 75''-85'' projection screens. The last row of students in the class can't see a lot.
Will watch Movies and TV Shows in it.
businesses would probably buy the surface hub for actual work and collaboration.
This looks very interesting and cool 😎
@theverge Can this do mirroring from my laptop? This would be ideal for Powerpoint Presentations
I like handwriting for all its imperfection, hate to see it become boring text.
This is cool.
nice 4k tv
Microsoft has the same technology on their Surface devices.
Jenish Patel which requires having Surface devices.
no,it also works on other windows 10 devices
Chintamani Helekar does it work with Android?
not yet,maybe in future
Yechiam Weiss Yup that's the catch.
I am an apple fanboy since my childhood and I’ve always loved the way apple approaches like for example seperate os for tablets and laptops. But apple products are meant for official purpose but why they didn’t release this type of product which microsoft and google did?
we already have it in our schools its called an edu com interface
They should make a Windows version of the app. Since the Surface Pro is a productivity powerhouse.
Microsoft Surface Hub exist for a year.
How innovative, Google.
The smart board is supposed to replace the white board but it is horrible. But this is genius
Thats really a cool way for employees to waste their company's money.
it would be so cool to see and apple smartboard they could sell a class set that comes with the board 25 ipads and 26 pencils for the price of like just the pads and pencils
It's just a giant 4k touchscreen....
yeah, I am sure there are some paid services which does almost same thing.
Goutham K.G the software is what sets it apart
Goutham K.G That is very buggy and has issue with touch.
Wouldve been better if 8k.....4k is not clear and realistic
this would be nice in the school districts
The Jamboard would work well in elementary and high-schools.
This Thing is so cool
Back in my days, my mom told me not to stand so close to the TV.
I wish I could see it integrated with Prezi! Would be amazing, wouldn't?
"like giant crayons"
They look like chalk to me, which makes more contextual sense.
price?
I can see where technology is headed but still sluggish.. Can a user write on a video that is being shown on the board?
Is it available in india? What is cost of it?
its like surface hub with casual outfit
No fear to go to whiteboard 😉
This must be a better version of the smart board by smart.
how much did Google pay you guys and why don't you guys review Microsoft's Surface Hub which has been around for much longer since you guys are suddenly into office tech?
Perfect for engineers
Anthony Otlowski .9
the first review which i totally agree
Cisco spark board.... check it out
how much? where i can buy this?
do they have smartboards in america
This whole thing was so he could talk to Lauren
Google is all the way up
Need this too @Apple
iPad for a blackboard experience
RUclips's app every day it unistalls, but the storage that it occupies doesn't delete anyone can help me?
A normal touch screen computer, the software for that collaboration thing (paid service is ok), and a 55" TV would cost less than 5000$.
