  • Humanity has lived through some horrific periods in history, including natural disasters, plagues, and man-made crises. Plagues have threatened to wipe out civilization more than once, while famine, floods, and fires have brought devastation and destruction. Wars, depressions, and atomic weapons have also contributed to the darkest times in human history.
    How did the world recover from calamities like the Black Death, the Great Depression, and the Spanish flu?

      It is the worst year in decades. Very few people were alive for WWII or the great depression. So for most of us, we have nothing to compare it to. Over a million deaths worldwide and that is 100% on the low end as many nations are underreporting. Add on to that the economic impact and this will go down as the worst year for billions of people.

    • @asha4736
      @asha4736 3 года назад +24

      It's all relative- For many people, particularly in the West, the emergence of Covid-19 and the ensuing economic uncertainty, societal fractures, political weirdness etc. all within the first few months of the year (not to mention the threat of nuclear war with Iran/USA/North Korea in January alone!) has been utterly incomprehensible. Add in the fear of Covid and the way we get our global news so instantly now, in some ways, it really is the worst for our psyches. We're being bombarded with distressing info everywhere we turn and to say "The worst year ever!" is hyperbole for sure, to us en masse around the world, it really can FEEL like this is about as bad as it could get.

    As a biologist, I think that this "worst lead to something better" principle also applies to some aspects of evolution. For example, we contain ancient "viruses" in our DNA (called transposons) which have inserted themselves millions of years ago. Although these transposons have and still can mess up our DNA by breaking chromosomes and destroying genes they also gave us additional DNA sequences which were used to drive evolution (I just made a video about that). Without these ancient "viruses" for example we would have not able to make placentas meaning that dogs, cats or us could not exist today. Interesting principle I think!

      @@Ghostofwar08. Do yourself a favor and forget all the propoganda you learned in school. Price fixing and the minimum wage caused a huge number of layoffs. FDR only brought security to the elderly by taking the security away from future elderly. SS is a giant liability now and will eventually fail. That means people who put money into SS, unlike the first generation, won't see a dime for their efforts. Did you know FDR had the government pay farmers to not produce anything? That resulted in increased food prices, during the great depression of all times, and of course also cost the jobs of many farm hands and migrant workers. His tax hikes, price fixing, and labor laws also bankrupted numerous businesses, and also stiffled investment in private enterprise. Instead people and companies invested in government works projects, or better put, a complete waste of resources. I could go on and on, but I've probably already wasted enough time. It sounds like you have fully embraced your government education.

    Also the NAFTA, NORTH AMERICA FREE TRADE AGREEMENT, was one of the primary causes leading to the Great Recession. Leading to the outsourcing, of most our high paying manufacturing employment. Now we are left with low paying service jobs and the manufacturing jobs still available have significantly fewer benefits and have all but done away with pensions. Replacing them with 401k’s, to ensure employers don’t have to pay for the remainder of a lifetime
