    Great content as always. One minor point-the pics of women having their heads shaved was not related to the use of the stocks and/or pillory. Those photos were taken in the immediate aftermath of VE Day in preciously Nazi-occupied countries, to punish and humiliate women alleged to have consorted with enemy soldiers. If a woman was suspected of having a sexual relationship with any Nazi occupier, regardless whether said “relationship” was consensual, they were branded as being disloyal to their nation by providing aid and “comfort” to the enemy.

    • @abbemartensson3850
      @abbemartensson3850 3 года назад +65

      @@jrmckim Let me grant you some clarity in your ignorant life.
      1. Most french women were raped, coerced into sex or offered money for it. Then shamed by their french countrymen.
      2. Some french men merely accused women for sleeping with the enemy because the french women refused their own advances. Like incels.
      3. Some french women DID sleep with germans but mostly for food, water or clothes.

    In Portugal, we used "pelourinhos" or "picotas" (the ancient name) for exhibiting the criminals and punish them. They resemble those Greek columns and they were placed in front of the city council or the main square of the municipality. If you come here, you'll see a lot of them in small towns and they are all styled differently to distinguish them from the ones of the other cities. It is a form of pillory, but it is made from stone and does not have holes or anything, even though the purpose is the same.

By the way "plazas" are like the main square, it is in between a Catholic Church and the town hall/ city hall. So the purpose of that jail was to shame the drunkards, scandalous people, petty criminals, and sometimes gambling addicted couples. We even had moving jails following a Catholic processions, to catch drunks and 'addicts' -they usually harm the old folks and women. I can't imagine that today, it' all illegal now to jail somebody without proper trial.

    Talking about nailing ears, the phrase "it's a rip off" originated in Glasgow In a market in an area that's now called the trongate. If a trader was caught cheating someone he'd be nailed by the ears to the door of the building where witches were held before they were publicly hanged (a building which is still there) and the only way the rogue trader could escape would be to rip their earlobes to free themselves from the nails and when anyone saw a trader with ripped earlobes they wouldn't deal with them because they were known to have cheated people in the past and were therefore untrustworthy

    The stocks never really were abolished in 1839. They were used during the civil war. Andersonville famous POW camp used them.

    1:41 At least domestic violence was a crime. And punished by public violence.

  • @stevetaylor8698
    @stevetaylor8698 Год назад

    One thing to remember when considering these punishments is that prisons weren't really available and therefore there was no such thing as a prison sentence. So crimes were often punished by corparal means ie bodily harm such as floggings, branding - which served as a type of criminal record, and the use of stocks. More serious crimes (which might not be seen as that serious today) or repitition of relatively minor offences, often meant the gallows.

    I'm all for bringing this back! Hear me out. Use this for petty crimes that would get a light jail sentence. Leave off the flogging and nailing ears stuff. Just an uncomfortable bench and foot restraints. Offenders would be there for 24 hours, but I'm nice so I will give you a pee break every 8 hours. So you have a group of petty criminals all sitting outside the courthouse together, maybe a 20 to 1 ratio of criminals to guards. Set up a produce stand so area stores can donate expired product that would otherwise be trashed. Sell produce to throw at the people in the stocks to help offset the cost of the program. So now instead of feeding, clothing, housing, guarding these petty criminals for days or months, you have an uncomfortable and embarrassing 24 hours of captivity, minimal staffing needed, the public catharsis of getting to yell at the dude that vandalized your store or throw a rotten tomato at the chick who drunkenly ran over your mailbox. Cheap punishment/deterrent for low level crimes! It is a win all the way around.

    Imagine how crime and nuisance would drop if brazen cocky local thugs were placed in the stocks, for a couple of days, in their underwear to be seen and ridiculed by the entire community !
    Throw rotten eggs and fruit, dirty water, urine at them. Nothing to eat. Soil their clothes.
    I think crime would all but dry up.
    One person subjected to that humiliation would deter hundreds.
