In Portugal, we used "pelourinhos" or "picotas" (the ancient name) for exhibiting the criminals and punish them. It's now believed that his plane, while flying at low altitude across the English Channel from England to the continent, was it by a bomb that had been dropped (or jettisoned") by an Allied bomber flying at normal altitude back to England.
I've been in the pillory!! It was painful!!! My back, neck, throat, then it hit the back of my thighs and knees and then I just ached all over.. an d I was only in them about 5 minutes!!!!! And I was about 12 (I was 5'9 at that age)
When I was still a kid, in rural Philippines, 1980s. Our village used to have a jail made of wood placed in plaza center. By the way "plazas" are like the main square, it is in between a Catholic Church and the town hall/ city hall. So the purpose of that jail was to shame the drunkards, scandalous people, petty criminals, and sometimes gambling addicted couples. We even had moving jails following a Catholic processions, to catch drunks and 'addicts' -they usually harm the old folks and women. I can't imagine that today, it' all illegal now to jail somebody without proper trial.
Talking about nailing ears, the phrase "it's a rip off" originated in Glasgow In a market in an area that's now called the trongate. If a trader was caught cheating someone he'd be nailed by the ears to the door of the building where witches were held before they were publicly hanged (a building which is still there) and the only way the rogue trader could escape would be to rip their earlobes to free themselves from the nails and when anyone saw a trader with ripped earlobes they wouldn't deal with them because they were known to have cheated people in the past and were therefore untrustworthy

@RiverNinja20 that's because I'm American and not qualified to comment on those countries, nor do I particularly care. In US it's legal to purchase politicians also, which puts us at a somewhat unique status.
I think the stocks would be a very suiting punishment for criminals here in the USA. Now, there is virtually no punishment for many serious crimes that have real victims.
So if you were in there for a long time, did someone bring you food and water so you didn't die? I'm not even going to ask what happened if you had to use the toilet...😫
the most recent use of pillory in my city had the local vicar take everyone to the pub while the victim was in the stocks. there he'd get everyone drunk and riled up about what "this bastard" had allegedly done, then at closing time they'd all go out and beat the living shit out of the person in the pillory, often leaving them to die from their injuries.
You know, if the stocks were still around today, public drunkeness would be considerably lower 😂 Plus it would be a great family day out to throw some tomatoes.
One thing to remember when considering these punishments is that prisons weren't really available and therefore there was no such thing as a prison sentence. So crimes were often punished by corparal means ie bodily harm such as floggings, branding - which served as a type of criminal record, and the use of stocks. More serious crimes (which might not be seen as that serious today) or repitition of relatively minor offences, often meant the gallows.

I may be wrong, but there is still a pillory that has been preserved in York, Maine. I grew up near there and would drive by it quite often. I wonder if it's the same one Thomas Withers was in. That would be cool.
I'm all for bringing this back! Hear me out. Use this for petty crimes that would get a light jail sentence. Leave off the flogging and nailing ears stuff. Just an uncomfortable bench and foot restraints. Offenders would be there for 24 hours, but I'm nice so I will give you a pee break every 8 hours. So you have a group of petty criminals all sitting outside the courthouse together, maybe a 20 to 1 ratio of criminals to guards. Set up a produce stand so area stores can donate expired product that would otherwise be trashed. Sell produce to throw at the people in the stocks to help offset the cost of the program. So now instead of feeding, clothing, housing, guarding these petty criminals for days or months, you have an uncomfortable and embarrassing 24 hours of captivity, minimal staffing needed, the public catharsis of getting to yell at the dude that vandalized your store or throw a rotten tomato at the chick who drunkenly ran over your mailbox. Cheap punishment/deterrent for low level crimes! It is a win all the way around.
Imagine how crime and nuisance would drop if brazen cocky local thugs were placed in the stocks, for a couple of days, in their underwear to be seen and ridiculed by the entire community ! Throw rotten eggs and fruit, dirty water, urine at them. Nothing to eat. Soil their clothes. I think crime would all but dry up. One person subjected to that humiliation would deter hundreds.
