    Quick tip: Next time you want to match a profile, cut out a full size negative side for reference. Don't need to worry about measurements, just hold it up to the work piece. I usually print, then glue it to cardboard or hardboard and cut it out. But since you have the CNC, might as well use that for your profile guide.

    for future reference an easier more accurate way to get the profile on the stand would be to put a 1 to 1 print out on the bed of the lathe use a bright spot light to shine straight down on the back edge of the turning to cast a shadow on the print out...simply remove material where appropriate.

    Hi Jay, for pushing stock through my planer I use push pads (hard plastic/wood handles attached to a flat base with a grippy rubber adhered to the base) Good grip & it keeps my hands even further from the blades. Even with a guard in place I get that extra level of comfort, I have seen first hand two people who got complacent around planers, both lost significant chunks from their fingers.

    Would love some advice on how to mount a wireless charger for a watch on the underside lid of a custom walnut/maple/mahogany mens watch box (galaxy watch). So when it's time to charge they can flip the lid open and the charger is out and ready. Glue? Deconstruct it and see if its screwable? Would post a pic if I could. Anyway I always love your content and my shirts from your shop.

    Hi. Nice to see you with new projects in the new year. For your jointer (european version like me :D): 1. No gloves for rotating machines!!! 2. You can push at the beginning from the rear, later you can push it on the outfeed table with both hands. If all it not slippery enough, you can use Superglide from Felder and it will slide smooth. 3. For a better result, or lets say for not wasting to much material, never push down on the infeed table, only pushing forward on this site.

    Since you're cutting the rings on a CNC, next time you could try adding tongues and grooves or dowel holes. This should produce essentially perfectly concentric glue-ups, with the downside of having to CNC everything twice.

    Jay, don't beat yourself up for the lettering on the top. The piece is distressed, so the lettering would of really looked strange in a pristine mode. The way the lettering came out gives it an aged look that compliments the piece.

    If you decide to do a Mk. II, the top cannot wobble like that. It makes it more difficult to decorate a cake and you might try spinning the one in the video with some weight on it before shipping it. cake turn tables have very heavy bases to off set the centrifugal force of spinning the cakes, especially when they are tall and dense. I did like the stained lettering better than the stark white letters of the coasters.

    I don't care for the "distressed" artificial aging look, either. If something is going to have dings and scratches in it, there should be some kind of story behind it. I've seen the TV people doing this to their "home makeover" stuff for years, and it makes me cringe every time. :P
    Still, great video on a project that took you outside your normal zone.

    I recently got a mini-lathe and started my first turning experiences. Yeah I feel 'the itch' too - the micronic wood chips hitting my arm/hands at velocity and embedding into the skin. Tried 3-4 kinds of dust collection (even going as far as to have a dust hose right on the tool), but everything is too staticky. Realizing its just a messy machine

    • @nfix09
      @nfix09 4 года назад

      yep, dry wood chips can feel like being pelted by splinters, the water content in green wood can heat up and almost burn your hand. usually it's not that bad, but I keep tight fitting fingerless glove on hand for the worst of it.
      Actually seeing how clean you like your shop I'm surprised you have a lathe. Did you make a curtain partition to contain the mess?

    I'm no expert, but shouldn't the wood grain go vertically? Why cut and glue rings instead of starting from a log?

    • @JayBates
      @JayBates  4 года назад +3

      Grain direction is not a requirement for turning. I didn't have a log.

    • @nfix09
      @nfix09 4 года назад

      most regular wood turned bowls are side to side orientation like he was truning
      If you were turning a log: would have had to turn the log on the mill like an end grain bowl (turning end grain is much harder on tools), and hollow out the center to lighten it,
      would result in leaving the pith in the holding end, making the piece less stable, Log wouldn't be fully dry, so the piece could warp or split. you would likely want to re-turn after letting the wood acclimate, bare minimum press the ends against a disk sander to true them up.
      Or if you don't mind joints but just wanted vertical grain, you could cut thick staves and glue them together like a barrel, glue in plywood ends for stability and workholding (rabbit them in to hide them) Frank Howrath has alot of good content on wood turning glued ring projects
      but since the finished piece was painted there really isn't a need to bother with all of this, Cheers :D
