This is a prime example of simple beauty. And, thank you for introducing me to Greene & Greene furniture. I love the ebony accents.
Dude, your shop looks incredible. All those years in your garage rearranging layouts paid off. Seems like your layout is perfect for a pleasant shop experience. Awesome project.
Thanks! It's so nice working in here. I feel like I've been here forever.
A definite upgrade from the old apartment shop. Nice shop!
I like your making templates available. An experienced or time having woodworker can take your idea and go with it. But if you are new or have limited time you can get your template and still produce something hand crafted faster that you can still be proud of. Thanks for doing this and sharing your videos. Been following you since your apartment shop days!
Thanks for the feedback! Much appreciated.
Can't say I have been following Jay since the apartment shop, but I have viewed most of his videos going back. What he has accomplished since then is fantastic. Even though he is a bit younger than me, he is one of the inspirations for me recently starting my own RUclips channel. Great work Jay, keep it up.
Damn! That is so gorgeous! I'm definitely building one! That handle matches what I imagined in my head for something like this. Great build JB! I took a class from William Ng once. He is an endless vault of knowledge.
What a beautiful design!. I am definitely purchasing these templates. Hopefully I use them. Unlike the super nice Katz Moses dovetail jigs I purchased but still haven't had the courage to try hand cutting dovetails..... lol
Also check out matthew Morris class everything he does is g&g or some type of Japanese style.
Simple, beautiful, practical. Yet another example of you humility as a man and your developed talent as a fine craftsman. Very nicely done my friend.
Jay! What a fantastic shop! Clean, organized, professional! Beautiful tool carrier!
Thank you very much, Bryan.
That sure turned out sharp! Love those ebony plugs! Great job, Jay
Jay, as usual a great job. You jumped into this video speaking about Green and Green furniture assuming all of your 1/2 million plus subscribers were knowledgeable on the subject. If you had taken a moment to explain what Green and Green furniture was, I'd not have to look it up and feel more uninformed than I normally do--now I know. Again, graat job.
Just my .02 but that's a huge ask. It takes more than "a moment" to research and write/execute a factually accurate script on any historical topic that will escape the army of YT 'expert trolls waiting to pounce on the slightest inaccuracy. I don't blame Jay for leaving it to his viewers to use Google (or a YT search) to get some background for themselves.
Great tool tote. Lots of great tips as well. That material is beautiful.
Nice as usual. Love to watch an artist work!
Ah, templates - nice! I really liked the tip for pillowing the plugs.
That is a really sweet looking project. Love it. Admittedly, you are the one who has started me in using these types of jigs for pattern repetition. Thanks for sharing all your ideas!!
Glad to hear that. Thanks for watching!
OMG Greene and Greene woodworking is so cool
I enjoyed the video, and seeing that new shop setup in action too!
I love 'simple' open tool totes like these, great for specialty tools or to load and go when working around a job-site house, or shop.
Thanks Chris. I don't even remember working in the last shop. I feel like I've been here forever.
gorgeous Jay. your design chops are expanding and imroving
Thank you, Andrew.
Beautiful job Jay! I'll be building one of these to around the house tasks.
Really nice result. The combination of the contrasting woods is a highlight too. Looking forward to seeing the tool holders and it being finished. Also, your shop looks amazing, Jay 👍
Jay, just wanted to say, I keep being more and more impressed with your projects and growth (particularly in design). Happy subscriber, I'm going to use this one with my students (if that's okay with you).
Very cool piece! love the shop and the templates are a great idea. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you, Stephen.
Very useful and helpful tricks. Thanks for sharing.
Very nice, mahogny is an awesome choice for wood. l love the subtle grain pattern!
Thank you very much, Kevin.
Jay this is awesome. Great job and thank you for sharing.
You're welcome. Thank you, Robert.
Awesome work Jay, beautiful tote! 😍👌🏻👍🏻👊🏻
Thanks Fred!
Beautiful work Jay.
Thanks!
Sweet, what a lovely project. Who is that other guy in the video?...swear I have seen him before. Awesome looking shop, great videography and great woodworking. I cannot understand how someone would ever do a thumbs down. Bizarre. Cheers👍🏻
Awesome Job Jay!!
greene and greene are awesome 👏🏻
Indeed
I love it!!! For sure gonna make it!!!
Beautiful job👍👍
Thanks!
The bending moment is at its maximum at the midpoint of the handle which is also at its thinnest, pl/4
I love it think I'm going to order your templates this weekend
Just watched William Ng’s video on ebony pegs. When I saw your set up, I knew you had too.
Love it! Will be picking up a set of templates shortly. Will likely just use round dowels instead of plugs. Also, for the bottom, would plywood be okay to use? Any special considerations?
Would love to see some picks of the tool inserts when you have them ready.
Keep up the great work.
PMFJI - I've built a ton of tool totes over the past 45 yrs. Plywood is ideal for the bottom. More stable, less expensive, takes tool abuse. If you're making this as a showpiece/decorative testimonial to purist woodworking - use solid wood. If you're actually going to haul tools around in it - plywood bottom gets my vote. (PS - I could see this as a decorative piece holding granny's china and finest silverware in the dining room or something.. or maybe full of woodworking magazines... or cat toys?
Plywood is a better choice for the bottom panel. If I were to use plywood I would likely get destroyed in the comments so I went with solid wood. Both will be fine though.
awesome project!
nice tutorial and i love the end result
Thank you.
Nice work Jay
Thank you, Dave.
Mr.Bates , Love the New Shop at New Home !! Hope you like it as well lol Can I get the Info on the Dust Cyclone you have there ? Like the Double Stairs instead of Single going to office... Like how its Turned out for you Sir.. Keep up the Good Work !! You also Make Very Nice Videos for us to Watch You and Learn ... Thank You for your Time...
A great idea for a grandpa to make heirlooms for the kids.
That would work :)
HAILSTATE! Nice build
I'm in. Just bought it
É muito bacana o cuidado nos detalhes que vc tem, tudo fica muito perfeito e bem acabado ! Parabéns
That is what my boards look like when I get home from Lowes.
I've had that happen a time or two....or seven.
It looks really nice, but the thing that strikes me is the whole box is connected with the handle just by a couple of screws and epoxy. I assume you know what you’re doing and it can stand the test of weight and time, but it just looks a bit off versus a through joint.
Ha! all thread through the entire end panel? I think you drastically underestimate the strength of the joint.
Bonito projeto... parabéns!
Stunning!
Thank you.
good job.👍👏👏👏👏
Thank you.
I'm concerned that the bottom shiplap panels don't have room to expand along their length. Planning to use plywood instead.
However, I want to make it easily removeable....wear and tear over the years can make for bad bottoms! Would anyone recommend using screws for this, or know of a better method? Thanks!
I'm sure the handle is plenty strong, as you have done here, but would doing a through the sides mortise of the handle provide at least the look of more weight bearing capacity? i love this as is tho and will put it on my todo list of projects
It would.
Amazing work... Can you make a pattern in PDF for us not in the US?
Such a clean design! I was curious how you were going to make the square holes. More simple than I thought.
Yup. Chop Chop!
Nice video 👌🤓
I appreciate it.
Beautiful
Thank you.
Looks great! Did you use a thin blade to cut the ebony? I like to use a circular saw blade.
Cut your own firewood and you'll warm up twice.....That's awesome
Jay that is a cool tool tote. I could use one of those with some dividers in it. Where did you find those square chisel punch thingy mabobs?
www.leevalley.com/en-ca/shop/tools/hand-tools/punches/65380-square-hole-punches
@@JayBates Thank you.
WOW Love it
well done
Would you consider selling just the full size paper planes in PDF , on their own.
Hey there Jay,
I’ve struggled with squaring up holes for these plugs. Getting them consistent with a chisel is almost impossible. I saw you using what you called a “square punch”, which looks like the ideal tool, but I searched for it using that name and had no luck. Is there another name for it?
Thanks Jay. You've had the Hammer Jointer Planar for a while now. What are your longer term impressions?
No changes in my views. It's a great machine.
1/2 way through. You thinking about a smaller version as well?
Do you use the 1/8 roundover bit on both sides of the box?
Beautiful. Just one question. Why epoxy rather than wood glue. I see epoxy being used more and more.
One advantage of epoxy is that it does not introduce moisture to your joinery, so you don't have issues with expansion/contraction during or immediately after glue-up. That's the main reason I would use it over PVA glues. (PS - I use it maybe 10% of the time, if that. I don't use epoxies often but they do solve some problems) Another reason might be durability indoors/outdoors... but I don't really see a tote like this kicking around in the back of a pickup truck. And unless it's going to be IN water (a boat) I've found Titebond III to be "waterproof" enough.
I went with epoxy as it provides a longer open assembly time and I didn't want any glue staining between the joints. Regular PVA glue would be fine.
I was going to make this out of mahogany, until - YIPE! - the only 12" wide mahogany I could find was $50 a board foot. Oh well. Cherry will have to do.
How thick did the boards end up being for the sides?
How do you like that WP drill press table? I need one and can't decide if I should make or buy.
It's pretty nice. Easy fence adjustments and the flip top stops work great. I rarely use the hold downs.
Long way from the old appartment shop
Great job are you sending to the uk now if so I'm interested in your go anywhere chair ?? Regards colin
That template is shipping worldwide.
What size punch did you use? What length of screw?
I'm really struggling to understand how the ship lap bottom without gaps could work. I don't agree with them being individual pieces making any difference.
It does make a difference. If they were attached to one another all expansion and contraction would be accumulative. It's the same reason why you don't glue in a solid wood panel in a rail and stile door. The panel needs room to expand and contract. But that same door has rail and stile joints that are the same size as the perimeter connections here. Same concept.
Nice!
Thanks!
Any chance you have a link to the square punch
Sorry. Forgot to add it. www.leevalley.com/en-us/shop/tools/hand-tools/punches/65380-square-hole-punches
Awesome work, always cringe when people call a painters 5 way as a putty knife lol
That's understandable.
💖💯😎👍👍⭐
So what kind of bandsaw blade is that?!?
Resaw King
What kind of double sided tape did you use?
Nitto tape: amzn.to/2XLuV6H
why not cnc it?
I was presenting this project as an idea for others to make. That's why I developed the templates for it.
Got ya. All good. Nicely machined.
What does green and green mean?
Greene brothers had a very unique style in the early 1900s
did you get a new shop?? Your shop lookS different. maybe it's the new tools. & camera angle. I had to ask Tool tote looks great. LOVE G&G Hopefully this is the start of Jay bates return to RUclips..?
return? I never left
I hope you are doing well. Serious flooding all around you. (2-15-20)
All is well where I'm at. I live on a hill. Thanks.
That box would cost a grand if ordered
“The heat is in the tools”
Indeed.
A 50 pound toolbox without wheels..?
Where?
Lol only a few pieces that need to be shaped... Everything but the bottom.
5 pieces. That's a few.
I'm not personally a fan of working with templates but that is a that is a kickass tote. I think the handle being from different board blends well with the endgrain on the joints. Can't really go wrong with mahogany :)
Thanks!
127th.
That is almost too nice to use. Almost...
Jay Bates and calling all woodworkers - You may have woodworking dust masks lying around your shop like me. And it might only be 3 of them - but if all of the woodworkers donated 3-10 masks (or whatever you have around) to your local hospital - we would make a HUGE difference right now. Medical staff need them more than us. Please donate masks!
Nice!
Thanks!
