    Great video!
    I just wanted to make a correction about the lizard’s scientific name; the one you showed at the beginning (Physignathus cocincinus) corresponds to the Chinese water dragon.
    The scientific name I found for my country’s black and white ColOmbian Tegu is “Tupinambis teguixin”.

      @@eggwithptsd1832 It can get a little confusing with colombians as there are 4 species of (T. cuzcoensis; T. cryptus; T. teguixin; T. zuliensis) The term black and white can be tricky as some do label their colombian as colombian B&W. She looks like a T. Zuliensis, same as mine. Also colombian scales are different then Argentine.

    So in addition to the moisture you add by misting, do the live plants add to that humidity by respiration? Or do they simply help retain the moisture in the environment? Pearl definitely looks like she's enjoying the new digs. (pun intended!)

    Pearl looks great, and happy.
    The bioactive information you gave is good.
    2 complaints:
    1) Although the term Black and White Colombian Tegu is a proper common name, it is misleading. Breeders came up with it to confuse the difference between Argentine Black and White Tegus, and Colombian Tegus that had been called Golden Tegus and Black Tegus. It would be better if you used the the less confusing terminology.
    2) That enclosure does not look to be at all big enough for a Tegu. It is recommended that they get an enclosure with a footprint of at least 18 square feet.
    Thank you for the work that you do.

    For anyone that does want a water circulation system in a bio-active enclosure, they aren't that difficult, but you need a deep floor. First, you will need to get a pump designed to be submerged and tubing (I suggest looking at at parts for PC water cooling). Once you have that picked out, get a segment of PVC pipe that can fit upright in your enclosure but still allow the pump to be lifted out for maintenance and replacement. Drill 1/8th" holes in rings around the pipe up to about 2 inches over the top of the pump when laying on a flat surface. Place the pipe and pump into the enclosure and start filling with gravel. The gravel can be shallower as you get away from the pump housing, but you should make sure to comes above the holes you drilled when near the pipe. Next I would set your pump's tubing to where you want the water coming out. On top of the gravel, you can lay out some sort of screening material to make a higher volume aquifer, but it isn't entirely necessary. Next, you will add in sand. This layer only needs to be about an inch deep but keep in mind that it will work it's way down into the gravel if you haven't used a screen, so account for about a 50% loss. This layer is what filters the water of organic material. On top of that, put your substrate of choice and build the enclosure just as Jessi did in this video. make sure you have something for the water to run down, like a rock wall or a series of pools. A steep, loud waterfall is going to stress the animal as well as over saturate the sub straight around where it is splashing.
    Once this is all built, start adding water until you see it completely covering the pump, then turn the pump on and keep adding water until it is will covered again, while running.
    Other additions could be adding an exterior reservoir and charcoal filter for the water to pass through before reentering the enclosure. This will help with excess water soluble waste that the plants can't use up. As well as a secondary pump housing and pump to run a timed mister (about 10 seconds of mist every 6-9 hours).

    How necessary is a drainage layer? I have seen a few set ups now that for go one and then there are the people that insist the drainage layer is essential to prevent excessive rot...

    • @animalwondersmontana
      @animalwondersmontana  5 лет назад

      I use a drainage layer in a lot of my bioactive setups. I chose not to in this one because Pearl likes to burrow and she's quite strong so she'd most likely just destroy a false bottom. Also the lip of the enclosure wasn't very high so I wanted to utilize as much of the depth as possible. As long as I don't oversaturate with water, the soil won't get boggy. I also focus the misting to one side and the other side is drier so Pearl can choose where she feels more comfortable. The springtails (detritivors) will clean up any mold growth from dead plants.

  • @agre3202
    @agre3202 5 лет назад +2

    Very cool! I would recommend looking into a false bottom to create some water flow and avoid mold growth. Including some springtails will also help to prevent this.

    • @imperialdrone6261
      @imperialdrone6261 5 лет назад +1

      @@rdizzy1 the problem isn't the wood chips it's the health of the reptile. If the health of the reptile is good they can digest and pass whatever they eat. Reptiles in the wild eat dirt and rocks and all kinds of things they wouldnt be able to pass if you kept them basic. With the proper temp humidity and diet they will not only survive in a bioactive enclosure they will thrive.

    • @rdizzy1
      @rdizzy1 5 лет назад +3

      Tegu's cannot pass wood chips even if they are the healthiest on earth. They can't digest wood. My step dad raised plenty of them, they were all extremely healthy, and still had impaction issues prior to making sure there were no wood chips (it wasn't a pure wood chip bedding, it was a dark soil mix that contained small wood pieces/chips in it, much like this bedding seems to be). Once he switched to a bedding with absolutely no wood chips mixed in, no impaction issues whatsoever.
      There are hundreds of posts of this happening to people, specifically with woodchips and Tegu's, I'm 100% sure all of these people do not all have unhealthy Tegu's, they just are attracted to eating pieces of wood/wood chips in soil/bio bedding is all, and them being healthy does not magically give them the ability to pass or digest pieces of wood. @@imperialdrone6261

      Pearl has been housed on mixed substrate for over 10 years. This is just the newest set up we've made for her. While some tegus might repetedly ingest chunks of their substrate in excess it's important to remember that doesn't mean all of them will. Pearl will occassionally get some of her substrate stuck on her food items, but since it's all natural materials and she has access to a nice hot basking area she's able to properly digest what she eats.
