SKEditinq We still practice it at my school, it can be done without grabbing the leg if your timing is very good - plus it's just a fun throw to learn.
SKEditinq yeah, I know the throw, it's Morote thrown from the collar and you use the shoulder to wheel them over, I can see how that could be like Kata Guruma. I just do Kata Guruma without grabbing the leg. Fit in very tight and keep your arm outside and you can do it. You have to be very fast though as you can't lock them down.
Morote seoi nage - Counteract, walk around it If it's a standing morote, you can take over if you move your balance in the opposite direction of the turn they make. And one on two knees, you gotta step around very quickly. I do agree, once it's hooked you're not going anywhere
Definitely - they're just pulling the leg away and stopping them moving forward with the shoulder which then makes them roll forwards - perfect Kibisu Gaeshi.
you can still do Kata Guruma-like in competition without grabbing the leg. For the right handed here the technique: Step 1: pull the right hand off your oponent from your kimono Step 2: Lead the right arm under the left arm you pull forward Step 3: Drop to the knees with your knees right-angled to the feet off your oponent Step 4: pull and turn the left arm over your shoulder, essencially here is to turn your head and shoulder right, it is somehow the other way than it naturally goes. I tried to explain the movements as right as possible but Judo is no sport you learn by reading and my english is poor. I recommend to try this at training because if the throw is fluent and quick it is a surprisingly strong throw.
ok so they will have a new set of rules to make our lives less free and comfortable...... i feel happy already xD ! about the arm..... from growing up, we've learned to stretch our arms when we're falling, to prevent us from falling on our faces (hard lesson xD) but for judo we've learned to do not! but the kata guruma is so different from normal throws, that we in a reflex stretch our arm out.
@DeadliftXI I was a judo player back in the day (when i was a kid, i got brown when i was 14) Now I do submission wrestling and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. but can you please tell me why a Morate-gari is dangerous?
@SmogHouseTradingCo Brazilian Ju Jitsu? In most Japanese Ju Jitsu clubs the throws are the same except in my Ju Jitsu club we adapt them so after strikes/locks any sweeps/reaps/trips we do target the muscle/nerves and we end with a lock/strike
As far as I know they're still testing this rule at some EC/WC qualification tournaments and it should be up and running this year But about sticking out an arm, your whole body lands on it and lots of people broke their arm or dislocated their shoulder that way
How come I find kata guruma easier than fireman's carries? I train in weights/bodyweight inconsistently e.g. 2-6 months on and then for 2 months to a whole year the only exercises I do are bodyweight exercises in class. Back to the topic, I had trouble doing a fireman's carry to someone 10-15 lbs heavier than me but a kata guruma is easier, especially when he's lighter than me. That being said, could grown men who train regularly do FUs/Attitude Adjustments like Cena?
kata guruma, te guruma or tsurikomi goshi....that are very powerfull trows..since it is my personal grow , so I ¨ are very close ..: D: D: D. .. I love judo type of power, even though in my weight, 66 kg, it is not very typical
This techniques its in Judo for the open mind of Kano sensei, cause he has trouble throwing a sempai in class, so he understood that working hard wasnt enough to catch him so he studied other arts aswell so when he watched a fireman carry in a wrestling magazine, he tried that on class and he succesfully threw his sempai, thus kata guruma was born...I leve that srory and admire Kano sensei for he always searched for the truth instead of staying iside the box...
Every move can be counteracted, that just depends on the person Sticking out an arm as you're crashing onto it isn't the same as just falling. In judo there's a lot more force behind it and possibly an opponent landing on it as well It may be a reflex but everybody should at least be aware it's not the safest thing to do
@urmomakiller The move is not illegal, there is a new rule in Judo which doesnt allow people to grab each others legs. That is why you cant use it since kata guruma is a leg technique. But you can still use if it is a counter attack
@Blazer2Pac I so agree with the new rules you can't even do it and when you can its all in the judges hands. that was my favorite throw until the new rules came out. so now i must find something else.
about counteracting, watch morote seoi nage (also a video posted by VGOJUDO) some of those nobody can block. about the reflex..... i can agree with you, but because the force behind it, you will have even less time to realize you have to keep your arm out of the way. some throws are so quick, you don't even realize you have been thrown till you're lying on the mat (happened to me once) but unfortunately this is not one of them...... have a nice day!
@FKudo1 Why not? It's still possible to do the kata-guruma without grabbing the leg my teacher tought me a way to do so =D although I must agree with you we won't see this technique often anymore I quess.... =(
you can say it is not the right thing to do in that situation, but if everybody would do the right thing, there wouldn't be no war (and no judo, since every move you would make would be counteracted by your opponent etc. etc.)
@sefk09 - Well said. The rules became to formal to follow. I also fail to agree "ipon" is fight over. I took 4 years of judo training at a high level and moved back to jiu jitsu. Submission is the end of the fight, not getting put on your back.
@ITUNESCARDCODE It might as well be illegal. Because so many people use this as an opening throw, you'll see this technique fade fast. Its just like how judo's newaza has gotten pretty bad over time because the rules discourage it. Techniques like the Omoplata and Gogoplata virtually disappeared from judo. Then BJJers started claiming they discovered it, when in fact they re-discovered them.
I know and I think it sucks. We just lost a few of our oldest techniques. Not to mention that west europeans and Russians who have a slighly wrestling style are now being picked on by the japanese who fight standing up without wrestling. How about you guys? Is this new rule a good or a bad thing?
@turismogamer Well, don't get used to it. Leg attacks are banned now. However, don't expect the Europeans to let that stop them, they will innovate. Seen it already.
@ITUNESCARDCODE Kataguruma, te guruma, morote gari, and many other throws will disappear too, along with a judoka's ability to defend themselves from these attacks in a practical manner!
@Alecal89 No, it's going to be two people calling each other names. The first one to cry loses. The people that can't hack the new ruleset will likely crossover into submission grappling of some type.
@ArmorKingRulez kinda...he rotated enough that he got a full front roll into it...the guy executing the move probably could have killed the guy if wanted to, but purposely over did the move
To slam you need to pick them up and throw them down. Quite hard to do without hugging the waist or grabbing the legs, two things that are not allowed in Judo and not trained because of it.
R.I.P Kata Guruma
* 1882 - † 2010
:( havent had the time to try it even it ended before i started judo
SKEditinq We still practice it at my school, it can be done without grabbing the leg if your timing is very good - plus it's just a fun throw to learn.
Simon Teare yeh well actually i just learned something called morote choi i cant do it right but the way i do it, it very ressembles kata guruma
Simon Teare and its legal
SKEditinq yeah, I know the throw, it's Morote thrown from the collar and you use the shoulder to wheel them over, I can see how that could be like Kata Guruma. Kata Guruma has a very important historical significance. Without it, Kano would never have thrown the mighty Fukushima. How can the IJF not see this?
Broke my arm being put into this throw, it's brutal! Love it :D
Warren Gardiner Logic
It is essentially an attack against the leg with a following lift - very difficult to defend against unless one is very good at ground work.
this is my first technique and i love it so much
Kata guruma is a great technic! may it come back!
I love this one! once I threw a 113 kilos guy over my head with no efford at all!
非常に良いテクニック
très bonne technique
My favourite throw. Works so well on jiu jitsu guys.
so nostalgic ...
Nice video man ))
This kata guruma is dropped by Meheddi Khaldoun against Winston Gordon during the Paris Open 2006. Amazing
Morote seoi nage - Counteract, walk around it
If it's a standing morote, you can take over if you move your balance in the opposite direction of the turn they make.
And one on two knees, you gotta step around very quickly. I do agree, once it's hooked you're not going anywhere
0:23 = WoW
best Kata Guruma i ever seen!
the "drop" kata garuma at 0:49 is my favorite competition variation... extremely fast and effective if you can trap uke's leg
Elle est pas facile à faire mais je kiffe cette technique. Le 3éme kata guruma il a morflé, vu la projection.
A lot of these are inside Kibisu Gaeshi, not Kata Guruma.
Definitely - they're just pulling the leg away and stopping them moving forward with the shoulder which then makes them roll forwards - perfect Kibisu Gaeshi.
Can just imagine being lifted into one of those throws: "Awww shiiiiiiiiit!!!!!!!"
I MISS OLD GOOD KATA GURAMA´s! :,(
yes. i agree
good ol' Kata Guruma,
it was a good time with you - but unfortunately we have to say good bye now!
:(
kata guruma the bestbest

Scuse me what is the music on video because magnificent!
Bring me to life - Evanescence
ce sport est le plus beau du monde
Es un lance dificil, pero es increible
0:50 ... Simply EPIC !
can we try to do kata guruma simply?
Is this still legal in IJF if you don't wrap up your opponents leg?
ok so they will have a new set of rules to make our lives less free and comfortable...... i feel happy already xD !
about the arm..... from growing up, we've learned to stretch our arms when we're falling, to prevent us from falling on our faces (hard lesson xD) but for judo we've learned to do not! but the kata guruma is so different from normal throws, that we in a reflex stretch our arm out.
but if you brake his balance forward (from his point of view) then you can still do it right?
Can't believe we won't see this technic in judo anymore... :-(
@DeadliftXI I was a judo player back in the day (when i was a kid, i got brown when i was 14) Now I do submission wrestling and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. but can you please tell me why a Morate-gari is dangerous?

As @carrera26 said, and well said, you can still use Kata Guruma but it has to be part of a combo or counter-attack
As far as I know they're still testing this rule at some EC/WC qualification tournaments and it should be up and running this year
But about sticking out an arm, your whole body lands on it and lots of people broke their arm or dislocated their shoulder that way

@Blazer2Pac yeah agreed with you and can use kata guruma in combination from set up techniques.
kataguruma é meu especial...... 0:22 foi bem aplicado
Sorry I'm out of date. Did they really banned leg grappling?
kata guruma, te guruma or tsurikomi goshi....that are very powerfull trows..since it is my personal grow , so I ¨ are very close ..: D: D: D. .. I love judo type of power, even though in my weight, 66 kg, it is not very typical

0:42 fast as hell, 0:22 is impossible but 3:40 is the best
@Blazer2Pac
Stpid rules? What kind of skill do you need to do that?
what is name of song
Every move can be counteracted, that just depends on the person
Sticking out an arm as you're crashing onto it isn't the same as just falling. In judo there's a lot more force behind it and possibly an opponent landing on it as well

song?
3:07 was very cool
why did leglocks became illegal in judo?
0:22 was brutal
Used to win most of my fight with ko uchi maki komi and kata guruma, fuck the new rules !
+TheDenrix Not to mention they'd be great ways to end a real fight. Ugh.
@urmomakiller The move is not illegal, there is a new rule in Judo which doesnt allow people to grab each others legs. That is why you cant use it since kata guruma is a leg technique. But you can still use if it is a counter attack
Not sure, but "how can you see into my eyes" evanescence
0:09 and 0:34 wiiiii flying korean :D !
No seriosly dragin got a sick running kata guruma!!!!!!!
@Blazer2Pac I so agree with the new rules you can't even do it and when you can its all in the judges hands. that was my favorite throw until the new rules came out. so now i must find something else.
i aggree with mightymk 0:22 ROCK
GREAT

have a nice day!
cette technique est une beaute et cest ma technique prefere
Never say never again...
@bla7091 sticking out their arm is understandable, since that is a natural reflex!
but since when is it gonna be illegal to go str8 for the legs?
:25 crazy kata guruma
Well here in Holland they are immediately disqualifying at the lower level tournaments if you grab a leg.
right with you find other venues NAGA>US GRAPPLING >FREESTYLE JUDO
0:22, definitely.
Evanescence-Bring Me To Life
@FKudo1
Why not?
It's still possible to do the kata-guruma without grabbing the leg
my teacher tought me a way to do so =D
although I must agree with you
we won't see this technique often anymore I quess.... =(
@Carrera26 here in holland we also arent allowed to grab the leg:S
hate it, i get to much hansi-kumi-ke
you can say it is not the right thing to do in that situation, but if everybody would do the right thing, there wouldn't be no war (and no judo, since every move you would make would be counteracted by your opponent etc. etc.)
0:22 to 0:25, nice jump :o
@sefk09 - Well said. The rules became to formal to follow. I also fail to agree "ipon" is fight over. I took 4 years of judo training at a high level and moved back to jiu jitsu. Submission is the end of the fight, not getting put on your back.

fuckin rules!! who do it, u know .. !
@myracoy Das is ein neue Regel.(das video war da before diese regel)
PS Entschuldigung fur mein deutsch.
that's not true. You just can't use some of the technique as the first one, you can still use any of these as a combination with other technique
sorry my bad english(its I loved that story...) by the way lol
Minute 22 look!!!!
2:47 who got ippon?
or you may use it in a combo if you break there balance
@Alecal89 No, it's going to be two people calling each other names. The first one to cry loses.
The people that can't hack the new ruleset will likely crossover into submission grappling of some type.
@Carrera26
Nope, sorry. All three tournaments open to me are currently using the IJF ruleset... BANNING leg grabs...
@val160293 Is it ever simple in live fighting?
@ArmorKingRulez kinda...he rotated enough that he got a full front roll into it...the guy executing the move probably could have killed the guy if wanted to, but purposely over did the move
@DeadliftXI I'm 65 Kilogramss and once brought down a 160 Kilogram man with Morote Gari. If that isn't good Judo I don't know what is.
To slam you need to pick them up and throw them down. Quite hard to do without hugging the waist or grabbing the legs, two things that are not allowed in Judo and not trained because of it.
@ThomasMin1988 there is only 1 judo, and THERE are various ways to fight
@ronki23 jitsu guys don't work on their positioning as much, that's all I meant.
@TheHugothique seems pretty brutal y...
its a bad thing many techniques have been banned that have not been needed to be
@DeadliftXI(Lo siento por contestar en español,pero no soy capaz de desarrollar un buen comentario en ingles)

Guau!!!
I cant understand why they want block it! it´s best:.. :(
@jammin1881 although on the streets, ippon would be the end of your conscious moment for the day ^^
