- These 2 Mini R53s have been modified but 1 is track-focused and the other is more for the road! which 1 is better? can a track-oriented car actually be better on the public road? in this video, we put the 2 cars against each other. Both have been remapped, uprated intercooler, injectors, and exhaust system, performance cams, suspension and brakes although 1 of them costs twice as much.

I ditched the coilovers and went with JCW springs and uprated Koni shocks. I found that I enjoy the car so much more than I did before.
What did you have on before ? And do you do any track days ?
@@DamoDrives I had the AP coilovers from Orranje. I ran them for about a year. They're not the most expensive but they wern't cheap either. Maybe they would be good for track days but I just cant deal with bracing myself when some uneven road or a bump/pothole when I'm trying to enjoy myself down a country lane. I think they made the car have less grip aswell as it would spin its wheels when accelerating and abs would kick in when braking into fast corners . I think my current setup is quicker on the road than the coilovers by quite a margin as i feel confident with the car and can feel what its doing. Tried the coilovers on a number of setting before giving up on them and selling them on ebay for half what I paid for them. P.S if your looking for better pickup change your crank pulley and alternator pulley for the +2% and +5% ones. The power stays the same but the pick up is really impressive. Sounds like all your power is so far up the rev range with all your mods that your lacking anything much down low where you need it when your out on the road ;-)
@@sleepercell9926 coiliovers are always a scam. Lowering springs and uprated or even stock shocks will always perform better. If you need adjustability get adjustable dampers. if you need ride height adjustability for whatever reason then coilovers are the only option but they will perform worse.
Epic, Damian. Quote of the video: "It goes better, it handles better, it stops better. Its better!" :)
It is a very good car for the track and surprisingly good for the public roads. I would not want to daily it mind you 😂
honestly think mini needs to go back to superchargers i have an r58 s and seriously low end power sucks in these plus who doesn't love a 4 cylinder with a whine
For the fan the fan resistor is the likely culprit as it's a 2 stage fan and the low speed goes via the resistor. It sits behind the radiator and does rot out and blow due to water hitting it. If not the fuse that will be your issue I imagine.
Thank you for the advice, was fine when driving as lots of cool air but as soon as you stop it shot up so not doing anything until I get it fixed
Good advice about the 2-stage fan resistor, these can easily and cheaply be replaced. The temperature shouldn't really be shooting up, even without the fan running... The first stage fan doesn't usually come on until 105°c, second stage at 112°c.... Normal running temperature is roughly 88-90°c. Changing your thermostat and adding new coolant and bleeding the system thoroughly could make a huge difference in running temperature. It really helped with mine. Hope this helps, keep up the good work Damo... 👍🏻
I just got an R53 for £425 on copart (with delivery and fees it's £1k)
72k miles, honestly cannot believe my luck
Let me correct myself, it's not luck. I literally prayed last night for the first time in a very long time, so I'm putting it down to divine intervention 😂
@@txl420 congratulations and welcome to the brilliant and at times stressful world of the R53 lol
Also try running the engine and putting on your Aircon. If the fan pulses high speed your fan is fine but low speed not working as your Aircon should turn on a steady low fan speed
Thanks for the tip will try that and see what happens, let’s hope it’s a cheap repair ; although nothing on a Mini seems to be cheap lol
Can you begin putting your R53 spec list on the descriprion inclduing the wheel & tire size ? thanks.
I’m going to do a full video on the car in the next couple of weeks
@@DamoDrives thank you.
Losing about a second just on gearshifts😮
Look at kw suspension I have the v2s on mine and they are smoother than stock suspension
Driven an r56 with KW club sports and they were amazing
the passenger door's open! 13:29
Well spotted , did not notice until near the end of the filming
Whats the latest with your Mini? I've just had ST XA coilovers fitted to mine. Similarly to the KW's it is smoother and more composed than stock yet much better handling.
Also good to see that despite the controversy on the r53 page this video has done well views-wise. Lack of recent R53 content on youtube as a whole IMO so good to see.
Have not been very well recently so getting back to full health and will be more mini content. Trying to arrange to go to 1320 Mini for a new map on the car and for them to give it good look over as it does not feel right (I am
Hoping some time next month for this) not sure on next steps as it depends on what 1320 say. Some small things need doing like new wing mirrors and possibly wrap the roof white.
Check the vacuum line under the left supercharger horn as you look at the engine. Look right under the horn with a torch, it’s tight!
There is a small vacuum line that plugs into the fuel pressure regulator and it often pops off the supercharger horn fitting..
Symptoms include lack of low down power and what feels like 50bhp missing from the top end.
If it’s unplugged then plug it back in ASAP coz the car will be running lean. Easy 2min fix 👍
Thanks for that , I had a look and good not see anything loose
Great video mate just a quick question how much did all your mods cost roughly thanks
I don’t know as I purchased the car as you see it pretty much. Only change was a decent fast road setup. Having it remapped again as it’s not quite right at 1320 mini in a few weeks so a few ££££
I love the wheels! What model are they?
Guessing you mean my white wheels ! If so Fifteen52 turbomac 8j Et30
Yeah exactly, they are awesome. Cheers!
They don’t make them anymore
Hi Mate, what gear knob have you got on and is it on that standard gear stick? Thanks
Which car are you talking about ? The car with race seats and Roll cage or my car
Me and my son got r50 his is a copper and mine is a one but mine been more modified than his
Looks like Uckfield
Sir, you are correct 🙌,
Whats the blue computer your running on the right please
An Ultra gauge , a huge amount of information on there but just have the most important read outs
1 seconds slower than factory with all that money put into it 😂
Having had some work done on the car and a faulty part we have managed a 0-60 (2 up) in 6,3. More recently have had a new map and power is up to 201 whp so would expect that to drop slightly (maybe 6.1) considering a stock Cooper S is 7.4 thats a good increase
@@DamoDrives I could definitely do better than that with my completely stock r53 with 227,000km. I’m not even tryna razz ya.
Your stock R53 cooper S you can get 0-60 less than 6.2
It's kinda funny hearing your mate bad-mouth your car; it's quite savage 🙂🙂
Can I ask - where did he get that triangle design on his car, is it his own creation?
I don’t mind truthful opinions as I can do something about that and hopefully 1320 can sort some of the issues but I won’t be buying an LSD or upgrading the coilovers due to budget. Get the car to where I think it should be. Not sure about the design, will ask him next time I see him
Thanks 🙂 It's always a worry to know if mods will alter things for better or worse. There's a fine line between making our cars more fun and making them undriveable it seems
Purchasing a car with all of the work done I am unable to get a true history of the source of the parts, who fitted them etc. not suggesting there is anything wrong with them but gives you piece of mind. Hot of the press car is booked in to 1320 for 10th Feb for inspection, leak down test , oil check , rolling road , road test, drivability test, remap car to what is required then another dyno test.
They're sure to sort it! My 08 R52 is going in to Mini Worxx nr Tewkesbury on Friday for a full supercharger service, -15% pulley and a remap, I'm hoping for some extra fun out of Kirsty the mini (originally named after a girl we knew from Newcastle who used to like to take her top down at every opportunity, but when I found what mpg it does, she's often now called 'thirsty' Kirsty 😉)
Ahh the GM supercharged dodge motor in a german owned english car .....before anyone starts to get their knickers bunched up , I own a r53 and daily an f56 S converted (mostly) to a jcw , but makes more HP at the wheels ..shooting for a teack appointed r53. Its on its way to time attack next season
You missed of Brazilian built engine 😂

Actually it's a Chrysler,bmw,Rover engine.
That's why it's called a 'Tritec' co developed with 3 companies
