Mini R53 Revived ! First Drive After 1320 Mini worked their Magic

- Join me on my first drive of my modified Mini R53 after 1320 worked their magic and completely changed it. After the performance issue with the car was found to be caused by a faulty bypass value the Mini R53 has gone from 120whp to 192whp. How is this going to feel out on the road and what will the new 0-60 time be.
To truly test the Mini R53's capabilities, we take it out for a spin on some winding roads and put it through its paces. We demonstrate how the car handles corners, accelerates from a standstill, and comes to a stop, and provide our honest feedback on its performance and handling.
Overall, this video is a must-watch for anyone who loves cars and wants to learn more about the iconic BMW Mini R53. So buckle up, and let's take a ride in this pocket rocket!

Always a pleasure to see an r53 rescued by a responsible owner. 👍
It was a love hate relationship lol , she certainly likes my wallet
@@DamoDrives Once sorted, the bleeding is staunched somewhat.. at least we the viewer get to enjoy your pain vicariously, thanks for the vids 😉👍
Tom is a Legend! I've had my car since 2009, nearly 15 years and 1320 have looked after it all that time❤ Had a cat cam and 550cc injectors recently 193WHP and it's awesome!🚗💥💨
Amazing team they have and so happy to let you watch and ask questions. 193whp is a good amount 🤛
Great video, I can highlight recommend AP coilovers, I use the for road and track and are a great compromise. They drop to the ground if needed, made in the same factory as KWs and come Inox coated so don't rust and still look néw 8 years later apart from the paint on the springs. Enjoy your ride 13 years on I am still enjoying mine and am looking to book my car in with 1320 soon for more work they are awesome.
New top mounts being fitted in a couple of weeks so really keen to see if the Tein with new top mounts is good enough as I would like to spend the money on other areas of the car but not holding my breath. It’s not going on track and really is an occasional weekend car. I have done 260 miles since getting the car done (6 weeks ago and 110 miles was getting back from 1320) . Keen to do some more work with 1320 along with mod-a-mini. Glad you enjoyed the video
BRILLIANT VIDEO I HAVE ISSUES WITH MY 2004 MINI COOPER S BRAKE LIGHTS STAY ON TRIED EVERYTHING GETTING NO WHERE
Thanks for posting this vid Damo! I've had suspicions about my bypass valve for a while now, but have yet to pull the trigger on a replacement and get it done myself. You've inspired me to get my butt into gear!
Glad it has helped , it really makes a massive difference. Would love to know what it’s like once you have done it
@@DamoDrives Did you replace with a Rooster Racing BPV, or did the 1320 guys just fix the existing one?
1320 replaced it with there own
@@DamoDrives Thanks mate... I would love to make the trek to 1320 or GS Mini and get some work done that I don't have tooling for, but I'm way down in Exeter :-(
Road trip 🤜🤜. That would certainly be a 2 day trip as it’s 230 miles each way
Thomas you superstar. 1320 id vouch for everytime
Back up there tomorrow and as long as there are no issues during the engine test a re-remap
Thanks for the video, Tom seems like one of the good guys out there and certainly knows his way round R53's, nice one
The team at 1320 are very very good and why they are so busy
Tom is a legend !!!!!
Another video being edited with Tom where we chat about which mods people could get for there car and why. Learnt a lot this time
Damo, greetings again from Arizona USA! On your prior vid, I mentioned my satisfaction with Koni Sport "yellow" struts in combo with OEM JCW Sport "red" springs on my own R53 vs coilovers of any type for roads in my local town and surrounding mountains. Certainly no "clunking" as evidenced in the drive-about with Tom - 1320 MINI's skilled and knowledgeable tech. If were mine, agreed at this point would allocate $/£ towards resolving that before proceeding otherwise. Also noting and while I haven't driven one with that shifter setup (Coolerworkx?), the B&M SSK kit installed on my R53 when nearly new (now at 6.5k total miles) shifts quite well while seemingly to me with much better ergos. Only downside discovered being the extended "box" beneath which limits clearance to OEM or aftermarket exhaust resonator that might be otherwise utilized. Plenty of pics on my related NAM thread topic if at all interested.
BTW, so very pleased that you're getting your R53 sorted from the originally purchased as suits your own purposes and objectives vs the notable prior owner. Hoping you don't trade for a Honda at some future point. Great reliability on those, however lacking much subjective character as do these "cult classics" IMO...
I am getting the top mounts replaced in a couple of weeks as we have found they are both loose and move around which explains the horrible horrible sounds. Be good to see the difference it makes spending £100 on some
Cheaper top mounts with the Teins
(Although a budget coilover it’s not going to compete with something like ST X) would rather spend £100 and find out that actually is ok rather than £1500-£2000
Another Arizona, USA R53 here. My Mini has 170k miles on and suspension is shot - car is miserable on the road. Just ordered Bilstein B14 coilover kit along with about every other suspension component/bushing I’ll need. I’ll be doing the work soon in the heat of the blazing Arizona summer, but it will be worth it for a good ride again!
Having replaced the top mounts , drop links , track rod assembly (other bits but not related) it feels so much better. The Tein suspension might not be quite as good as other options but feels a different car. Going to hold of on suspension for the minute as other things need doing
Bang on about suspension ap,st and kw all made in the same factory ap is the best £600 pound option!
Does £600 include top mounts ?
@@DamoDrives they use stock top mounts like the st and kw so you keep a nice ride also unless you got with the xta st
I need new top mounts as mine have had it
@@DamoDrives yeah they like to fail I have had 3 sets best to get ones from main dealer or corteco.
Great 2 videos I just watched! Glad you got the power issues sorted!
Glad you enjoyed them 🤜. Going back in September. Are you a mini owner as well
@@DamoDrives I just picked up an R53, needs quite a bit of work. Hoping to sort it out over the next year, they're pretty rare around the midwest USA.
Congratulations , they are great little cars when they work 😂, terrible MPG and with the price of fuel in the uk it’s not great £1:70 a litre (down from £1:99 a litre last year)
@@DamoDrives terrible mpg? My other car is a Z06 haha
Definitely worth getting remapped
It’s on the list , maybe for next month
Come a lot way since a late 70s 1275gt . Interesting vid 👍
Considering my car is a 2002 the latest minis are so advanced although you can still tell they are a minis.
@@DamoDrives I just bought a 2008 I’m a long way off from 1320 so doubt I will ever get there . But it’s made want to send mine in somewhere for a check over I just did a basic service myself.
They are very good and it can be difficult to find a specialist. Which part of the UK are you in ?
@@DamoDrives Shropshire it’s prob 3 hours to them
Took me about the same to get there as I am down on the south coast near Brighton. They are the only mini specialists that I have been to with my car so unfortunately I cannot recommend any where else but a lot of people cannot say enough positive things about them
Well that's more like it! Sub 7 secs to 60 with two up is pretty good indeed. I bet you'll do a lot more than 1000 miles in it now, I put 5000 on my insurance thinking I'd not get near that on a weekend toy; I'm up to that in 6 months, thanks to covid that's about the same as the last 2 years total
I am waiting for a dry day to try another 0-60 as loosing 60-70kg should make a difference although I am not great at launching lol
@Damo drives yeh 60 or 70kg less should make a fair difference; only way I could get rid of 60kg is chop off all my limbs and maybe my head too!
You mentioned ASC bogging you down; is it really noticeable? Mine's an 08 with factory lsd, and I get the impression they must've turned traction control down from what others say
I don’t have an lsd but mine is a 2002 and it is horrible and really intrusive. It feels like as soon as there is any slip it cuts all power (feels like o. Or off and not gradual) I turn it off a lot of the time. Pull out of a junction and if there is any slip it feels like you just stop. I leave it on if I am just going from A to B though
Lol that wheel bearing sounds horrendous 😂😂
The microphones do a good job at increase the speaking audio levels so it was even worse having a chat with the passenger (both Tom and I had microphones on lol) if you have not seen the latest video of me driving you will see how much better it is.
Stonking content mate. :) Nothing better than having a trustworthy and knowledgable garage in which to take your prized possession.
Cheers mate and great to see you catching up with the videos 🤜
Hi, I am just wondering I have a Mini cooper S (2005) Gears, 3door hatchback , but wondering what model is it? R..something but not sure ? Thanks so much
Did you notice the lack of boost from the leaking BPV on the Ultragauge?
Mine’s going to see Gareth at GS R53 tomorrow to have a Rooster BPV valve fitted as even though it’s not as leaky, it’s still a worn part. I do see 10.8 PSI at WOT > 4500 RPM still though
Very new to the R53 so I did not look or actually know what to look for. Tom at 1330 mini pretty much knew what it was on the 1st run on the dyno. Hope it feels better after it’s done
@@DamoDrives I'm only 3 months into knowing anything really about R53s, very much a newbie here too :D Worth mentioning again that community is great, I posted up the boost pressure readings I was seeing and they're generally 'not bad' - I'm not expecting to see the dramatic improvement that you did!
What's next for your R53?
Suspension (either new or fixing) , possibly removing sports cat and replacing with a normal due to emissions , remap and possibly 550cc injectors , a few dull maintenance bits that also needs to be done.
I thought Arkham sorted the ride out (Previous video about mot) You said the car was amazing after, felt like a new car.
The actually ride was terrible before and used to bottom out all of the time so it did feel so much better. I was told Tein suspension was always noisy so put up with it but never liked it . Arkham made an amazing difference but they did say the suspension was difficult to get right and the wheels look amazing but not optimised for driving with that setup (they are only 2 way adjustable and not 3) hope that makes sense
What engine mods does it have. ?
At the start of this video How my Modified Mini R53 Surprised Me: Eye opening discoveries by 1320 Mini
ruclips.net/video/xsZXXaMziPk/видео.html
He said your suspension sucks.
I am going back in a few weeks and while the suspension has not been changed the issue was the top mounts were shot (changed) and on further investigation the drop links and track rod assemblies were not in a good state either so have also been replaced. Be good to see what Tom thinks this time; not expecting him to say they are amazing but should be alot better
123hp..? Yeeesh
It was making really low power due to no boost pressure so fixing that gave me an increase of 70whp
My grandma drives it faster.
What does age or gender have to do with the way a car is driven
Great video if i buy one :) ill bring it up to you 1320 mini :) and im from llanelli
They are brilliant and such a nice bunch of
People. They have so much time for you and explain what’s going on if you ask. Back there on Monday hopefully for a re-re map as long as the engine is ok
