    I will be showing my dad Donda, but not yet. I know if I posted a Donda video now it would get a lot of views but I really want to show him the rest of Kanye's discography in chronological order, starting with The College Dropout. I want him to see his evolution over the years and how he reinvents himself every album.

    this is kanye’s greatest album. the story behind the album, his mother dying, becoming depressed about that and started heavily drinking, interrupting taylor at the VMA’s, hitting rock bottom completely, he then goes MIA for 1 1/2 years, going to japan to clear his head, rome to try and take up fashion but ended up not because he was so fascinated by the musical art and history of rome, to then ending up in hawaii where he would spend months working on songs to perfection, spending days in the studio just looking for samples, while getting stars to feature on his songs. truly the greatest comeback story in hip hop, maybe even all time.

    The best thing about MBDTF is that Kanye basically made it out of spite for everyone begging him to make something less experimental and more “Kanye.” So he basically created his masterpiece/piece de resistance/magnum opus to shut people up that were hating on 808s. He created one of the greatest albums of all time out of pettiness. THAT is Kanye West in a nutshell.

      @@saaw8344 ah that makes more sense, however what you said is not true lol. Kanye has done a lot and there are things that he was the front runner for and he led the way for however to say there was never that level of production before him is just misinformation. • @saaw8344
      @saaw8344 3 года назад +232

      @@madebymali6758 those are great producers but they never made progressive hiphop. Is what I mean, Mbdtf song structures had never been done before in hiphop before this album. And the amount of layering of vocals and instruments was unheard of in hiphop beforehand… the producers you named made really dope beats. But mbdtf didn’t just have beats. It had gigantic pieces of music with multi phased songs, not just beats with 4x4 time signature and just verse, chorus, verse, chorus then fade out

    • @madebymali6758
      @madebymali6758 3 года назад +100

      @@saaw8344 again I’ll have to disagree. MBDTF was a masterpiece, but I think it’s being overinflated as far as what it was musically. If anything 808’s & Heartbreak was much more innovative musically. I think there’s a bit of revisionist history happening here. The reason MBDTF got so much praise is because of the maximalist production, the features, & what was going on with Kanye outside of the music. But this was not the first time in rap that song structures were experimented with or any of what you listed. None of that was brand new with MBDTF. It was just executed extremely well.

Then goes in the booth and spits his lyrics off the top of his head. Hasn't written lyrics to a song in over 25 years. The double and triple entendres, the homophones, the use of syncopation, the cadences, the usage of different flows...all from the top of his head, and into a plethora of classic Hip Hop songs. @Salem Gasmask the full line includes ye saying that his plan was to drink until the pains over, basically saying that he’s at a low point contemplating suicide and he wants to numb himself by drinking. then he questions it with “what’s worse the pain or the hangover?” asking himself if the pain hurts worse aka he should commit suicide or if the pain is worse the next day aka the hangover after drinking, basically saying that continuing on living life after the “hangover” could be a greater pain. not sure if i described this with the right words

There's a Fuzzy Bit-crushing thing going on in there as well as the vocoding. (the effect similar to humming on a comb with tracing paper.) The keyboard filters & dictates the pitch detail, the Fuzz & Bit-crushing provide the buzzy texture. There is more than likely additional pitch quantizing post production. College Dropout and Late Registration are albums full of ambition and telling the world who he is. So ambitious that he was willing to rap with his mouth wired shut after the car crash that almost killed him.
    Graduation was literally inspired by him watching Coldplay and U2 concerts, that made him want to make stadium music/anthems like they do. He even featured Chris Martin on the album. This was where he really separated himself from everything else in rap because production wise, we'd never heard anything like that in 2007.
    From this point onto today is where it gets interesting because he continues that theme of stadium/concert quality music but the ambition is now gone and replaced with having a love/hate relationship with the spotlight he wanted. Especially while he's suffering in his personal life.
    808s & Heartbreak literally speaks to that. But even in that you have songs like Love Lockdown and Paranoid with this larger than life instrumentation that once again, was so new and different to hip hop in 2008.
    MBDTF is a culmation of elements from all the previous albums but still innovative. The theme is literally his relationship with fame. The opening line to Dark Fantasy gives you the clue: "I fantasized bout this back in Chicago". Then later on in the same song tells you what fame ended up doing to him "the plan was to drink until the pain's over. But what's worse, the pain or the hangover?"
    Lost in the World describes it best though, he's using a girl as a metaphor for fame. He loves how fun it is to have what you want, he loves that he can show the world his talents and use the platform to say what he feels BUT he hates that he can't have any real privacy while dealing with things. He hates that the music business plays politics (hence why he felt compelled to interrupt Taylor Swift). Paparazzi was more prevalent then and literally would hound him to the point he attacked one. He admits in a freestyle around this time "I sold my soul to the devil, it was a crappy deal. At least it came with some toys like a Happy Meal".
    A lot was going on, and has since then. And it's all been in the public's eye. And for all his bravado, it's really an armor to cover he's actually sensitive. Hence why now his priorities are his family and his faith.
    His life has really been like a storybook.

    I heard this for the first time last night. This will be the 4th time I've listened to it in 8 hours.
    13 Tracks without ANY duds. I really thought that was impossible. I love his use of King Crimson, Iron Man & Gil Scott-Heron. The Drum-Programming is INSANE. It's probably the best produced album I've ever heard. I can't wait to get it through my studio monitors and hear EVERYTHING. My headphones aren't honest enough to hear the detail & do it justice. I could listen to it on repeat for days, which is so unlike me. It just has ALL the Beats, Hooks & Grooves you could ever need with some incredible vocals. Most of which sound completely natural barring some creative auto-tuning but nothing too much. The Rawness of vocals sell this so well. Dynamically it's absolute perfection.

    When you're dad is asking about impact, I think it's difficult to point to anything directly because it's so unique. Nobody could ever make another Runaway or Blame Game. WIth that being said there is some autotune and guitar stuff here that Mike Dean does that definitely helped guys like Travis establish a sound. This is Ye's maximalist statement, a presentation of everything he'd done prior meshed into one project, and then pushing the boundaries a little further.

    It's a great question asked at the end: "Did this spark something new."
    And it absolutely did. I think the "broken sound" you hear today in so many places was very much inspired from here. Examples from one of raps greatest new minds. Vince stables.
    Whether it's: Vince Staples with Norf Norf from 2015 or very recent: "ARE YOU WITH THAT?" that broken sound. I'd say that's inspired by Kanye.
    Now again, Kanye is absolutely inspired by Radio Head, Bon Iver and Gestaffelstein and Daft Punk. Which is to say, I think it's safe to say that Kanye listens to music in amounts none of us do. He explores far outside of rap and it's what makes him feel so original.

      It's funny when some people who for example are mostly into Rock/Metal music, criticize so heavily Hip-Hop/Rap artists when for example I think that Hip-Hop/Rap producers/artists tend to have a much wider knowledge of music or even taste as a result of having to dig very deep into all kinds of music of any era in order to create their samples. And seeing so many Hip-Hop heads making nowadays reaction videos on you tube, listening for the first time in their lives to all kinds of classics of Rock and Metal music, they seem to me to be more open minded toward Rock/Metal than rockers/metal heads tend to be toward Hip-Hop/Rap.

      Don't get me wrong this is my favourite album of all time but tbh it didn't really start a new sound or influence hip hop THAT much, especially compared to some of Kanye's other work (808s). This grandiose extravagant album didn't need to start a new wave, it was Kanye's own masterpiece
