Ive been running an NB vvt engine with the c30-94 rotrex and make just under 300 on e85 (265 on 93 pump gas) super reliable and have put 20k daily miles and 10k track miles on it. No issues and love the reliability!
Impressive, I have a NB VVT as well, but was looking at the 74 because of reliability concerns. I do quite like to hit revlimiter 3-4 times during my daily trips, is that how your 'daily' miles are as well?
@Gekko12482 No. My daily commute is 60 miles of mostly highway use. Daily commute rpm never exceeds 5k (3-5psi boost range) to merge.
Treat it well, and it shall be a great way to daily.
What size pulley are you running?
@RippinLyons 90mm is what i use and is the smallest the c30-94 supercharger can tolerate without over spinning the planetary gears.
I also had a C30-94 on my VVT swapped NA. We made 295 whp on E85. Tuner said it had more in it but kept it down for improved knock ceiling and rods.
Hell Yeah!!! I have been saving my pennies to Rotrex my 97. Super stoked that you, some ones opinion that I highly value, made the move before I did.
Greg, I really hope you do an NC build one day. The differential and transmission easily handle 300whp in a way more capable chassis than earlier cars. The wheel hubs from an RX8 fit allowing massive tires to actually put power down. You really are needed as there are tons of NA and NB tuning channels and almost none documenting the boosted NC well. With an RX8 differential and a boosted 2.5L swap 400whp should be very doable.
Trust me, I'm very aware of the NC Kool Aid and can't wait to have a sip (aka shotgun the entire pitcher.) I've been holding out so long because I can either wait until I have a bigger driveway/garage so I can keep all 3 cars, or sell the NB now to make room for the NC. Not ruling out the latter, but if there's a *chance* I'd be able to get into an NC while keeping my other 2 cars, I think it will be worth the wait.
@TheCarPassionChannel Definitely worth the wait, and chronologically the NB build totally makes sense. I'll be doing my small part thumbing up along the way. Besides, once you show what the NC can do, I believe you'll finally kill the hidden gem of the Yachtas that people have been sleeping on, so take your time. Thanks!
@@TheCarPassionChannel I have an 09 NC with a C30-94 Rotrex. I bought it as an abandoned project. I finally figured out what was stumping the last owner and am now tuning/sorting the car. I was considering taking the car to AED for tuning, emailing tunes sucks. I think you would like the car, it's super clean and the previous owner threw a lot of money at it, One Goal, PPE, Xero Limit cams, etc. I'm curious to what kind of power it's going to make. Maybe we'll see ya there. Love your channel.
@@TheCarPassionChannel If and when just get an ND while you're at it. Full line-up would be cool as hell!
Sounds Amazing
its so smooth like butter!!
such a nice sounding machine 😍
I have eyed this kit a for a year or so and am excited to see you’re using it. Have a spare engine to build and want to boost. Can’t wait to see more on this!
Keep making these videos mate, big fan👌
Recently installed and first time doing so you say? Sign me up! Yes' that is exactly the kind of content I am looking for especially considering the kit you installed is also the one I've had my eye on for a good long while now and I would love nothing more than either more motivation to finally pull the trigger about it or put the idea to rest and look elsewhere for power. Yes, please! Thank you very much, in advance. Whatever you will cover I will appreciate immensely, Reliable first hand experience is very useful information and not always easy to get a hold of. ✌
Sounds great
I got my NB at around the same time you posted the first 2SJ video and have been following since, really want to get this kit for it but need to save my pennies and get all my leaks sorted out first 😅. Was excited to see you got your hands on the kit and looking forward to what you have planned for it in the future 👍
This is great! I'm planning a Rotrex install onto my vvt swapped '94.
Can't wait for the detailed video.
Sounds crisp 👌🏻
Nice!
I'm going to install a FFS kit over the long July 4th weekend.
I currently run a Powerdyne Supercharger in my 1998NB, yep, not many about, LOL. I also have a Rotrex Supercharger on the shelf, was contemplating swapping over, looking forward to the forthcoming videos. Fantastic content as usual.
I had a rotrex on my r32 golf. Loved it
looks really fun with the short gearing!
Hell yeah!
I was thinking about buying that kit before I went with the FM turbo kit. Big gap in price difference but I was always leaning more towards turbo (came from bikes and I wanted a turbo lol).
So now your NB has a supercharger and still nitrous.....I am intrigued lol.
Love the channel and keep doing your thing, and as always...thanks for the help
This is awesome. You are awesome.
Hey Greg welcome to the Rotrex SC era! Been following your channel since I bought my 01 NB 4 years ago and really have learnt a heap from your content. Since last year my NB runs a Rotrex C30-84 with water meth injection, an ME442 ECU and a Canchecked gauge, 220hp at the wheels and lots of smiles. It never had quite enough power - until the Rotrex arrived!
Man that looks like a lot of fun.
A Suoercharged Miata Monday!! Thanks Greg!
The NB is way better than the other builds with the ME442 is epic 😊
Love it! I still have an experimental C-charger from Maxpeeding rods I'm planning to use on a project...
Stopped working to watch this, i have been keeping an eye out for this video. Looking forward to some more details 😁
I've had this kit on my '97 for a couple years now. C30-84 w/ a 72mm pulley and running on an MS3. Been very reliable. I know there is more power on tap. I really need to get a dyno tune next. Looking forward to seeing your results. Good luck!
Boost progression are awesome
Epic, I loved it on my car.
Nice! I'm currently running an older kraftwerks kit with the c30-74 on my 97'. Currently have the compressor maxed out and pushing 12psi on a bad tune from a shop. Plans are to get the c30-94 and push closer to the torque limits after I've had my fun with the current setup after a proper tune.
Sick, looking at doing this to my 10ae if you could provide more videos on it, I'd appreciate it! Good work out there Greg.
Dude i love your Channel. I have a NB with ITBs myself and i just love your miata content! Keep up the good work!
I’ve been trying to get one of those for years!
I like the raw feel of that video 😅
Love the throttle blips.. sounds super responsive at low rpm.
Can't wait for the rotrex + nitrous pulls!
Yes! Finally some Rotrex content! What mm pulley are you running? Do you plan to experiment with pulley size at all?
loving the rotrex sounds 6:45 the exhaust note makes my computer speakers rattle 🤣
sooo damn cool!
Good lawd those supercharger noises
FINALLY THANKS GREG
If i wasnt dead set on a k series engine for my na this is the route I would go! had a kraftwerks kit on my k20z3 eg hatch, putting it on was like turning the unopened engine into a built N/A race engine lmao, the power delivery on these kind of superchargers is so fun.
For anyone curious it made about 370 wheel on 10psi, revving to 9000. K20z3:Skunk2 pro series intake mani and 74mm tb, cheap header, fuel and the supercharger kit, thats it.
I've liked their stuff for a long time. I'm a turbo guy when it comes to boost, but it would be sweet if they made a kit for the N52 engine.
Why not just get an N54?
@@tickandslug Because, i like/want my N52.
Ess tuning im pretty sure they make an N52 kit
Super nice work Greg! I assume 6speed and 4.3 torsen? Too short? Or do you still like it the way it is even if it makes more power? I'm thinking about going SC route myself. It'd be awesome if you could cover turbo vs. sc from various perspectives (install, driveability, reliability, etc.). Thank you!
I'm thinking about doing this to my NA Miata. Kind of conflicted since it's a 74k mile pretty clean one. Awesome video Greg!
TRD kit is stupid easy to add/remove. So far as I can remember it doesn't have any mods that can't be removed in a long afternoon (injectors being the "hardest" part) It takes like 3 hours to install.
Obviously tuning and standalone being the big variable.
My 97 has about the same mileage and I take it to the redline often. If your engine is healthy it will be fine. Rotrex don't make a ton of torque so it's not hard on the internals like a turbo would be.
This is the reason I went with a supercharger. Though mine is a kit from Bofi Racing out in the UK using an M45, it's essentially the same; power throughout the RPM range. It really makes the 1.6 a more fun Miata with a bit of boost. Not only the linear power, but the lack of maintenance and the reliability that a supercharger brings.
Bofi sell the Rotrex kit. Once you factor in the cost of a properly refurbished M45 the two cost the same (like £5k+) by the time you have added ECU etc. Turbo is cheaper overall. You might find a used supercharger kit if you are going M45. Turbos are perfectly reliable if you don’t push the boost too much and have good supporting mods like cooling, I know plenty of people with years on basic stock bottom end 200hp builds.
I’ve been dying for this video just a heads up I had that on my bp4w and at that boost level I was in the 260s at the wheels so don’t be shocked when it’s getting up there in power it’s perfectly fine lol
I've been rotrexed powered for about 9 years with basically zero issues, besides shredding a few belts over the years. Started with a -74 at 190-210hp. Now a fully built vvt with a -94 making 295hp 240tq on pump 93. Has no low end power but above 5500rpm it's amazing.
Do you have a list detailing your build?
That's rad bro so n9s and supa nice combo , wonder what it do on spray😅😂 peace and love bro keep it rad stay safe and build on l8z
This video makes me thinking in not taking the ITB route and go supercharger. Don’t have the money to make both😂 awesome vid, Greg
Love the build i just wished superchargers werent so expensive in South africa , i really wanna get a mx5 and do a build
Yes!!!!!!!
You make me wanna Rotrex my 2.5 swap NC! I actually now really wanna race your NB 😫 I think it will be close but I think you’ll win.
You'd eat it alive on an autocross track. A stock NC is as fast around a track as an NA/NB with suspension, wheels, tires, exhaust, intake, and tune.
When you want reliable, predictable horsepower.
Got that with my FFS kit
Buy an LS.
@@JamesChurchill3 he said reliable not accessible and cheap xD
@@MendicantBias1how do you like your ffs. I've been wanting one for a long time. I have a vvt and 6spd swapped na she just needs a little more power.
Reliable and rotrex…lol. Amazing kit and the perfect power, they just don’t last like turbos.
love it
Had one of them kits on my nb2, great power and quality, just be careful in cold temps. The rotrex oil got so cold it didn’t get to the head unit and it burnt up
Love your videos. This thing sounds awesome! I have a 96 m ed project that I've been working on trying to get running for a bit. It sat for like 13 yrs after being parked do to a failed water pump. I Used your timing belt video for a walkthrough on that. Replaced gas tank, sending unit etc, rebuilt fuel injectors, new spark plugs and wires etc.. I unfortunately did a lot of work before realizing i may have a low compression engine. So I'm in a pickle trying to decide if i should try my first engine rebuild.. trying finding a replacement engine etc.. any thoughts on a situation like mine?
funny intro!
when getting it on the dyno and getting some timing back for the low end and gettin it naild i think you will gain some of the ponies back and gain on a large part of the operation range
*Supercharger noises*
[Music]
Accurate as.
Bro, no joke that silver NB2 looks like my car
Now we need a roots supercharger Mazda miata
Greg, I would be interested to know, with your current experience, which of your boosted setups you consider to be the most "worth it". Its hard to get a sense of driving feel, reliability issues, and other headaches through technical videos. Some of these kits can be pricey but sometimes you get what you pay for. Specifically of the following setups that you have made would you recommend to people taking price, enjoyability and reliability into account:
1. low budget turbo stock (broke and boosted)
2. Mid/High budget turbo stock (1.6 red car)
3. High budget turbo Built( Current red car)
4. Mid budget NA (NB build with/without NOS)
5. Rotrex build (Current NB)
Everyone I've ever spoke to said it feels like a beefy na setup and how they should have come lol curious to see all the spreadsheet data after the AED visit
Welcome new Member.... to the Rotrex Gang. I'm waiting since 2014 to you . Im started with a C15-60 and now since 2016 C30-74 on a 1.6 75mm Pulley @14PSI. No Dyno tune running about 21° at redline and making aroud 250 crank HP. Lets see what numbers you can do on the VVT. My Engine is forged with 11:1 Comp Ratio + 1.6 exhintake.
What mods did you have in 1,6 engine
@@costastsementzis9414 forged 1.6 with supertech Pistons 11:1 comp ratio. Head Job is done by Hand. Some grinding here and there new valve seats. stock cams regrind to 254 inlet and 259 outlet with 115 degree lobe separation and more lift than stock.HKS Header and 2.5" exhaust. Maybe on the Dyno I can get a few more HP
Everytime I watch a vid of yours I regret not putting a lightweight flywheel in while I could
One of the best mods for a Miata.
Hubba Hubba 😍
please do a 0-60mph!
Hi Greg! I'm curious of your opinion between turbocharging vs supercharging miatas now that you have done both. It seems like both are great options depending on build path and I wanted to know which you found to have the easier install! Do you plan on running e85 with the supercharged motor?
When you are driving you should always have both hands on the wheel.
The only time you should touch the shifter is when the clutch it depressed to complete a shift.
Awesome! My 94 is m45 supercharged and the noises and extra pep are so much fun. What happened to the gap sauce?? Are you still gonna spray it?
Oooooh shit. I wanted to go roots supercharged for my 1.8 swapped car but this sounds WAY cooler.
Nice Bro !!!! I am rebuilding my motor as we speak and taken in a lot of your advice!!!! I have the c-30-94.. with the 80 mill pulley. .Definitely reliable !!! Prior to my re-build ...
Greg please bring your intro back so I can vibe to it again lol
Nice car
I have 2001 Miata automatic transmission, I can put supercharger for it
Track Dog Racing makes the best and most complete Rotrex kit. I have installed several.
Is it reliable? Hard to install? Looking for this vs turbo, not quite into drilling the oil pan.
@@JorgeGarcia-qv3vq its a very simple install comes with a complete set of instructions and IMO way more reliable than a turbo setup.
The thing that always puts me off rotrex is in my mind they're not positive displacement like a proper roots/twin screw so surely they have lag just like a turbo. Since I hate turbo lag (the main reason for going SC) then surely you should go for a normal blower for the full 'linear power' experience? Would love to see you answer :)
This is gonna be a fun one to answer
So why a centrifugal kit instead of a roots? For my personal preference, I *much* prefer a roots for that low RPM oomph and buckets of torque. If I wanted high RPM scream-o power, I'd just put a turbo on it.
So my question is: Why'd you pick a centrifugal over roots? What made you pick one over the others? I'm curious for more perspective.
As always, Craig, excellent video.
For me, it's also the way I would go, for couple reasons :
1. It's maybe an unpopular opinion, but I don't like the root supercharger whine sound.
2. I want to keep the same atmo exhaust sound, which isn't possible with a Turbocharger.
3. I want linear power, and more importantly, instant throttle response. (So again, not like a Turbo)
4. I don't want to spend a hell lot of money into an atmo tuning to gain 40hp
So basically, with a centrifugal supercharger, I'd be able to keep the same exhaust sound as an atmo, but without adding the annoying (for me) root whine sound.
For me it combines the advantage of a Turbo and a root supercharger.
Need a reverse CVT to get more boost at low RPM
Rotrex Gang ❤❤❤
Do you have problems with Acceleration Enrichment on the Me221? Could you drop your map for some inspiration😅
Oh fuck yes
Always 😍👍
This video just made me second-guess my decision to drop twin Webers for Rotrex 🤔
W
If you were to forge your engine for high power rotrex on your Nb, would you do the same upgrades you did for the vvt beast? What would you do different?.
I've got an engine setup almost identical to this on my NA. Currently it's just naturally aspirated with an over the radiator intake, but I definitely want a rotrex kit for my car! From what I've heard, it really feels like a standard naturally aspirated setup, but just more. Is that pretty accurate?
Hey Greg what are we talking price wise complete
Hey Greg, I'm just about to start street tuning a turbo MX5, stock block, TD04 and ME221
I'm wondering what's a safe ign timing map while I tune the fuel table?
Are you running a base map with timing pulled out across the board?
Damn looks like fun mijo. Pull all the way to redline is the freaking best haha keep it up junior
I really like the idea of going rotrex on my street/track nb. But Im still atruggling to figure out how long the rotrex units last. Ive seen some people say if you service them its not problem. But also others saying they have only lasted them 15k miles.
Nice video. I just installed the same kit in my 99. What ECU are you using? I have the MS3PNP and I am just beginning to start tuning. Would love to compare notes.
I'm using the ME442 in this car, and I have PSPnPPro in my other car. Both great ECU's but MS has a better user interface IMO!
What is the gauge your using in the centre binical? I've seen it before but can't remember the name.
Also what ecu are you running on this?
How could you mess up your intro? I thought you had a whole team that helps you 😂. I know the feeling of a one man production. The worst is when I’ve left my mic pack off and have to reshoot everything. Anyways, now I’m debating if I want to supercharge my Miata cause that power looks nice and linear.
That intake looks to run relatively close to the exhaust manifold. How is the IAT?
Hey Greg, what do you think the 0-60 would be for this right now? How does it feel compared to a turbo setup from FM? Awesome video!
200whp. Just under or at 6sec. Maybe around 5.5s or so with a final drive that would get to 60mph in 2nd gear and more traction. Several Miatas doing 5.5s at ~220whp.
Would you recommend for the Exocet as a Race track/AutoX and street driver? What's the weight of the kit. My Exo was 180lbs heavier on the nose than the rear. So I'm working to remove weight.
My 99 NB has no VVT would it still be a good idea to buy this kit?
Well, that escalated quickly! Good for the stock rods the charger is not as brutal on changes in torque than turbos can be.
What PCV valve are you running on sc setup? Does the catch can breather make it smell cancer in the cabin when hvac is on? Why no coolant reroute on an already boosted engine?
It's similar of nitrous in reaction ? You will try with tiny shot of nitrous ?
My questions are: What are the "must have", the "should have", and the "nice to have" upgrades to prepare a stock motor for this?
Taking the car as a whole, I already plan to work from the ground up. I put on new stock brakes last year but added SS braided lines. New tires and sway bars went on this spring. (Holy moly what a difference!) New clutch (FM Stage 1) and flywheel are going in in a few weeks. New coil overs and a roll bar will go on next year.
On the motor side, I'm thinking that doing the cooling system re-route is at least a "should" - and as long as I've got things torn apart, dropping in a cross-flow radiator would probably be wise.
Do I NEED a stand-alone ECU? I'm not afraid of it, just want to understand the order of go.
My goal for the car is improved street performance. Nothing too crazy. Maybe (a very big maybe) I'll try Autocross someday. The main focus is to make the car a little more exciting but still comfortably fun for me and my wife of 28 years to go tooling around on Wisconsin back-roads. So 200 horsepower sounds like exactly where I want to land.
If you're interested in autocross, start now! It will never be safer nor a more travelled road than in a mostly stock Miata. As far as ECU the answer is "It depends". You can physically get any FI to work without one, but it is a lot of bandaids and very old solutions because of the lack of ECU's in the past. Nowadays ECU is a good direction to go even without adding FI because of the relative low cost to performance gain once tuned of ~15 hp/tq with better gas. Also an interesting note since you seem to be taking your time and doing things one component at a time, if you decide you will do FI you should ECU first to learn about it with a much larger margin of safety.
Must have- not clapped stock motor and head gasket/radiator, aftermarket ECU (you need full control of timing and fuel) Cooling re route is not a must IMO, plenty of people do fine without it. Your stage 1 clutch may not hold the power either, most of those are not good for a small torque increase. Should have- good stock brakes, proper roll bar (all Miatas need one IMO) suspension bushes in good order or replaced, drive shafts in good order, likewise rear hubs and diff. For your use some coil overs are probably good too.
This is my opinion based only on 5 years Mazda ownership and 20 years as a mechanic. Personal opinions may differ. I have been doing all the supporting mods, next on my list is coil overs and ECU, prior to building my turbo set up. I have to use mostly second hand and refurb myself so progress is slow.
Don't skimp on your suspension. It amazes me how many people spend big bucks in turbos, etc. and then put $400 Racelands in the car. Get a quality coilover from 949 or Flyin' Miata.
FM Stage 1 is good. Main thing is to make sure your engine is healthy first, so do a compression test. With good numbers, go for it. For a roots kit without aftermarket ECU, look at FastForwardSuperchargers. Their coldside kit now have the last breed of blower : the TVS. 👌
I have the TDR kit on my NB2. Dedicated track car. A connecting rod failed in the stock engine while on track. Had a built engine made with Haltech ECU. Makes 275rwhp at 7400 rpm. Just blew the stock 5 speed on track. Swapped over to a BMW ZF 5 speed. Love the SC setup as it keeps the predictability on track.
