The Ellison wasn't always permanent apartments. The first time I went to the USA,in 1991,I landed at LAX from a stopover in Hawaii.Leaving the terminal myself and a Swedish guy were approached and asked if we needed somewhere to stay. He explained about a backpackers lodge on Venice Beach. We hopped into the microbus and drove to the Ellison. On arrival we were taken to the rooftop to a glass room that was a lookout toward the ocean. This was the office that booked you in and took your payment. The whole building was operating as a backpackers lodge. It was $20 a night to stay. I booked in for two weeks. I was a Doors fan then but at the time, had no idea fate would take me to where Jim and Pam stayed. The office staff told me that Jim used to live there and suggested I go see the movie, which had just been released. It was a great time. Wow!!! Really enjoyed this man. I grew up in San Bernardino and LA County’s and spent lots of time along the coast and Hollywood. Even been to the Whisky back in the early 90s. The Doors have been in my top 3 of bands since I was in Jr High. This is the best Doors locations video I have seen. Whenever I get a chance to go back home (and Cali opens up again) I’m gonna check these places out. Crazy about Pam’s diary. Thanks again!! You Rock!!!
Thank you! Yeah, I must say that its a pretty easy route to follow. If you do it I would suggest renting a bike for the Venice Beach/Santa Monica portion. Anyhow, keep on rockin' in the free world.
I was 23.
Awesome story! When I shot the video I tried to get them to let me shoot inside but no dice. Its still a pretty cool place.
@@RockessentialTim In 1991 it was very bohemian. My first week,I shared the room with two very young independent European girls that spoke next to no English.
When they left,a young German boy moved in who was a skateboarder. He fulfilled his adolescent dreams of being able to skate along Ocean Drive Venice Beach.
@@RockessentialTim In 1991 there were no security entry gates. Like I said it was just a backpackers hostel.
Cheers from Sydney,Australia.
Yeah, they put up gates because there is a pretty intense homeless problem there in Venice.
Thanks for this. As a Doors fan for the past 35 years, and living in the UK, I would never get the chance to see these places
Their music just never seems to get old, right?
@@RockessentialTim or less Haunting
Love this . Live in LA and have never really noticed any of these places around aside from the Norton house ! Thanks . Keep’em coming
50 some years later I'm surprised this many of them still exist, but that's LA, right?
Mate that was brilliant made an old DOORS fan very happy! ,Thanks Max,LIVERPOOL UK ,subbed!!!
I'm glad you liked it and it was my pleasure to make it. Would love to come to Liverpool and make a video or two there!
Outstanding work, again! I grew up in Venice, on Westminster Ave., and this part was very accurate.
Thanks much. Back in the day I used to live on 20th near the college so I got down there quite a bit.
What a wonderful, fast paced video! Presented very well.
That was Awesome. Thank you for doing this. Any more videos coming about The Doors? Truly appreciated. Peace...
There is this one which is just more detail on the West Hollywood portion of the previous tour. ruclips.net/video/Ed488LbVdJw/видео.html If you check out my full channel at hiking4life you'll see a couple more things on Laurel Canyon and such. I love The Doors too but I didn't get really into them until I was in my late 20's. Thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed it. Peace.
This was awesome! Going to follow this tour on my 1st event trip to LA in the spring.
Thank you again. If you can, try to get a look at the Alta Cienega Motel room. We were able to slip the desk clerk 20 bucks for a few minutes. Totally worth it.
Hiking4Life I saw that one too. Pretty incredible
As I truly know the hard work that goes into these type of docs, it is always good to let you know, it is well appreciated all that work, time, music, editing and scripting and oh the planning. Folks think you just think this up and just go do it very easily. Nope!!! Spent 80-100 hours so far on my LIB doc. I need to get to Barney's when I get back there. It is hard to imagine what it must have been like to be in L.A. in Venice / SM and squat and live day to day like JM did and what the real moment's vibe was like. cheers steve
Great video! I love that you waited until the end to recomend subscribing, I did... Thanks!
Thank you and thanks for the sub. Much appreciated!
Really enjoyed your tour..love the Door
Right on, thanks!
My condolences to the people who lost their lives and all of the people who lost their homes in Los Angeles
Right on, thanks for the kind thoughts. We need em'!
Dude, I want to thank you for this. I was born on Sunset and a long time Doors fan. I've stayed in Rm 32 and it was indeed a "fleabag". Something was biting me! I thought it was bedbugs or something. I've eaten at Barneys a couple times too! Rock on.
Something to be thankful for on Thanksgiving. They are doing something to the motel, its been closed for months. Fleabag or not, I hope they keep the room intact, right?
@@RockessentialTim Took them long enough! I stayed there back in 2009! I told them when I checked out that something was biting me (and no, it wasn't Jim's ghost. Wish it would have been!)
Ha!
This was absolutely amazing. Thank you for doing all of this work.
It was the best time I had all year! Thanks for watching.
Great video. The soundtrack is awesome!
Thanks Jim. I probably work harder on the making the music than I do filming the video. Its really nice when someone notices!
@@RockessentialTim It's definitely appropriate for a Doors documentary. Sounds Doors-inspired. Is there somewhere to get the music? I could jam to that.
@@jimbowers5402 Thanks. At this time it I have not put it out. I write the music for all the vids and its kinda not very well catalogued at this time, most of the pieces don't even have names. That may change in the near future and I will def let you know.
Fabulous thank you I was cruzing sunset
Strip in my 64 GTO in 1967.
What a car and what a great time to be young and have one!
Awesome video and RIP James Douglas Morrison.
Thanks. The Doors are one of my personal favorites so it was my total pleasure to make.
Pretty great! Thanks for making this super fun video!
Right on, thank you.
Great stuff. You need to run a Doors tour. I'd certainly sign up.
Heartfelt thanks for this further complete journey to Jim Morrison's places: the vibes must be very strong (I can also hear them from Italy!). I've saved the video to my playlist and - if I ever manage to cross the ocean, I'll keep it as a reference for my tour. On top of that, I am a great walker: when this crap Covid will be defeated, it will be wonderful to walk all over Los Angeles! Regards :-)
Thank you. Exactly one year ago to the day I landed in Italy for the first time. A trip we will never forget. Can't wait to get back.
@@RockessentialTim Roma!
So cool to see all of these places!!! Thank you, Hiking4Life.
Right on and thanks for the comment!
Thank You for this fine video. One of my favorite bands.
Me too!
Awesome video, man. Really glad I stumbled upon your channel.
I'm glad too. Thanks.
Hi Tim,
Thank you so much for the videos I’ve been binging on them all day! Well done and very appreciated! Best regards, Jim from New Hampshire
Thank you. I'm looking at your avatar and remembering probably the biggest mistake I ever made. I once traded my 67 Gretsch Chet Atkins for a used IBM PC. It seemed logiical at the time!
@@RockessentialTim I love the guitar but it’s not practical these days when I go out and play. But I’ll never sell it it is for them to play! It’s a 1962 Chet Atkins 6120 Nashville. Just started watching the Beatles video in Los Angeles
@@JimFothergill I find the Gretsch to be the hardest guitar to play. Its like an onion---just when you think you've got it figured out here's always one more layer that's liable to make you cry.
@@RockessentialTim True! I think that’s why I don’t take it out because I feel like I always have to adjust to it. Hey Tim, I’m really enjoying your RUclips channel I am fascinated by LA and haven’t been out there in a couple of decades. I’m fascinated by the history and magic of Los Angeles, crazy but it’s true! I think when I retire from teaching and playing out I’m going to head out there again to visit some of these cool places! Keep up the great work on your show!!!!
@@JimFothergill Right on....
Awesome video. Thanks for sharing. Love the Doors, Great band
Rock on!
Hi Tim, this one is wonderful too. U didn't appear on my feed til last week. ( goofy algorithms !) I loved the Santa Monica area, just gorg! No wonder why the incomparable Dwight Yoakam lives here now and has for a long time. Great work, Tim
Peace and love
Thanks, same to you.
Thank you for creating this beautiful video testament. Should be turned into a feature-length movie with Doors music background & Doors member recollections. Would enjoy seeing the view from that rooftop apartment that Jim occupied. I'd definitely pay to see & experience that. Tack on some early life Florida sites and final Paris scenes to document more of this exceptional life that affected so many of us.
Absolutely. The Paris part is on my bucket list!
Awesome video! Really cool to see what some of those places look like now. Crazy to think people eat in a place where LA Women was recorded. Classic album!
When they open back up we'll be going again. The food was excellent and I highly recommend it!
Thanks for making this interesting and informative video
Yer welcome. It was totally my pleasure!
Nice tour, thnx for the info. The Doors4ever
It was totally our pleasure!
Nobody does LA like you! Your the LA Man!!!
Aw shucks. Thanks!
@@RockessentialTim I love your channel. I love your vibes. It is a the best. There is a gentleman Who does tours of London. You take me through my musical past where the magic happened and LA. I been to LA once, so you always give me a wonderful time. I would love to see Dylan’s LA if you haven’t done that.
@@GaryBook Thanks and BIG thanks for the Dylan idea. I actually saw him walking to the liquor store from a rehearsal studio once. He gave me that "don't even think about saying hello" look and I moved on.

A fabulous insight into the history of my favorite group of all time . Been to most of Santa Monica and Venice beach locations but you filled in the ones I've not visited so thanks for the tour. Stay safe. Rog. Pacific sunset records
Thank you , Rog. Peace to you.
@@RockessentialTim likewise. Stay safe. Rog. Pacific sunset records.
This was very cool man. Once this pandemic is over I'm going on a road trip to see all this.
Its a fun way to spend the day fro sure. If you go to Venice Beach and Santa Monica I would rent a bike down there to see it all.
@@RockessentialTim that's good advice. Cheers from colorado 👍
I'm going soon screw the pandemic lol
@@He11boylalo Do it! Traffic is as good as it will ever be.
@@THEAMERICAN-ob2wt I know this is a lot to ask in 2021, but can we please not make every single comment thread into a political discussion/argument? This is a post about visiting nostalgic spots in Los Angeles. There are literally infinite threads elsewhere to inject your views on the pandemic. Fair?
I Love The Doors & this Video man.
Great Job 👍🏻🪙👍🏻
I still crank them up at least once every couple days. Glad you enjoyed it!
@RockessentialTim - Loved it & I still & always will listen to The Doors. 👍🏻
great tour/video....really enjoyed it over coffee in bed and just wanted to say thanks for putting that one together
Awesome, thank you!
Glad I ran into this video, Tim! Need to take this tour myself, one day. :)
Its still there!
I was so lucky just turned 14 and saw them play in London. The 2 night gig was filmed as 'The Doors are open'.
Very interesting. Thank you and well done.
Right on, thanks!
Superb thanks for this. Can't believe nobody dare stay night in that room. Hope to make it one day soon.
Thanks, man. Purely as a museum piece Jim's room is fascinatingl and I coulda spent a couple hours there looking at everything--- but on a purely motel room level this one puts the seed in "seedy".
@@RockessentialTim must have been fascinating to see. My relatives live in santa Monica as well and I've never been. Think I would get on that trail take in some jim steps. Thanks for reply 👍

Great video. Thanks for sharing this bit of history for us Doors fans
Right on, thanks!
Wonderful video, so much detail, very well researched .
Hi Tim! Your content is OUTRAGEOUS! In a good way! Looks like I'm watching a MTV or VH1 special! Love the editing. Fraser Ave. has the most adorable little houses! Love the Venice Canals! That Jim Morrison hotel room looks creepy! You always show the best of LA! Another great video! God bless!

I went by McGowan Hall at UCLA today - wow that gave me chills thinking about Jim and Ray in film school.
Thank you for sharing and showing us some Doors 😉👍❤️🇺🇸
Right on, thank you!
Enjoyed your video. Many of the places were familiar to me. My family moved on to Sherman Canal in the early 1960's. They were pretty run down back then. They look fabulous now, not at all the way I remember them. Moved off of the canals and into another house, and spent most of my time growing up on the beach of Venice and Santa Monica. Would stop at Olivia's when I was in high school. Thanks for the memories.
I can remember the canals being very, very affordable. Not any more, right? Thanks for watching.
