The Police "Roxanne" guitar lesson. Today we're using the Retro-Sonic Compressor and the Lovepedal Kalamazoo Gold overdrive to emulate this famous 'dry' guitar tone from Andy Summers. Using a staccato approach, "Roxanne" flows through a jazz influenced chord progression involving many minor 7th chords and Summer's seemingly favorite chord form, minor 7 suspended 4th. During live performances, The Police pump up the tempo and kick the chorus up with a heavier guitar sound. The Lovepedal Kalamazoo Gold does a great job of transitioning between guitar parts without changing the core tone. Also, you can hear Andy Summers following the bass line more in the chorus, starting with a pulloff on the Bb and then sliding back and forth between power chords for a punkier feel. Enjoy your riff of the day guitar lesson!

Andy nails another one.
I really like the way you teach songs. No talking at all, just playing and a few titles
Excellent. Mr. Summers' slick rhythm playing deserves more recognition.
Gracias, saludos desde Perú.
LOVE YOU MAN, we have a cover band and we are drinking right now, and having a great time, youre video helped us! thank you
Andy is great!! Thanks for the video!!
Dawmmmm the tone is so correct
Amazing!
Well done , thank you very good breakdown of the progressions.
I love Summers use of suspended chords.
Andy @ PGS - Your lessons are really great! Thanks!
Your lessons are kick ass Bud. Spot on. Thanks !!!
This was a big mystery when I grew up. No you tube, no tutorials. We just winged it! NICE : )
Another great lesson as always , thanks 🎸
Perfect sound
Andy, another great lesson. Easy and clear. Just a minor quibble. At 2:33 the onscreen text says the chord is Gm/A#. Strictly speaking, that is incorrect, or at least not adhering to the key. It should be Gm/Bb. While on the guitar A# and Bb are the same pitch, Bb is in the key (mainly Gminor) while A# isn't. Same goes for the D# chord at 3:28. It should be Eb. Eb to F is a major second while the interval D# to F is a diminished third. Yes the same enharmonic pitches but D# is not the correct spelling in this key. Plus it looks odd to the eye.
Thanks!

Sorry!! Havent seen your post.
Best Greetings, Peter
Thank you Mike. Indeed, theory can be daunting so when a logic can be applied, it help makes it clearer for everyone :)
+Mike James It makes sense once you can play it
Have to say, this is the way I like to learn stuff. Show me the full riff, go over the chords, play it slowly, and Bob's your uncle... Thanks guys!
Fun song to play. This Message in a bottle Synchronicity II fun had to learn them after seeing the Police live during their reunion tour.
Nice Presentation
I think the hardest part of this song is the rhythm. I often find myself starting the riff to early or too late when playing with a backing track
Chord progression is straight forward but spiced with unexpected sus chords
Gm Bmaj7/F EbMaj7 Dm7
Roxanne You don't have to put on red light
Cm7 Fsus Gsus hold
Those days are over You don't have to sell your body to the night
Refrain
Cm7 Fsus Gsus hold
Roxanne You don't have to put on the red light
Chorus:
Cm Bb
(Roxanne)(You don't have to)
Put on the red light
Eb F
(Roxanne) Put on the red light
F Gm
(Roxanne) Put on the red light
Cm Bb
(Roxanne) Put on the red light
Eb F
(Roxanne) Put on the red
Fsus Gsus
light, whoa!
Finn Bjerke can i buy her?
gracias amigo desde cuando quería tocar esa canción
ROCK ON
Great lesson
At first it was a bossa but they couldn't make that because they where announced as a punkband ;).
good lesson, I sent the link to my brother, we're gonna try this song. thx
Remember, you have to add a little laugh when it starts.
Telecaster the only guitar you'll ever need.
+Poo Fighter ...YES ..but you gotta have an SG?
Michael Paul
No i don't think so, you'd probably be able to emulate a Gibson with all the foot pedals on the market and vise versa with a gibson sg
agree maybe a Les too but tele does it all
I love my Telecaster lol
Beautiful guitar. I'd rather have an ASAT, but this one sounds pretty slick too. (Ultimately, the ASAT tribute is cheaper and has one extra fret. For some reason it makes a huge difference to me).
thanks
Great job Andy. When doing the C to Bb, you played the A grace note. Do the same thing up at the F… go E F E F holding the chord. Same with the F G… index the F# to the G. Otherwise, everything was slick :-)
Bravoooo grazieeee
Sweet Tele.
Andy, are you running anything other than the pedals and the Fender Reissue through the signal? It just sounds too good to be true. I can't achieve that level of guitar sound without vintage instruments/amps.
beautiful, thank you very much for this, i would only change the Gm/A# name by Gm/Bb , but that is just a theory thing and how to name chords
I always wondered about the recording itself, where the first guitar strums tune up to the chord as if the tape started slower.
Andy is using a plectrum.
nice
ANDY Summers =)
Ok, who DIDN'T yell out ROOOXAAANNE at 0:17 !??!? If you didn't, you're either in your 20's or a big fat Thanksgiving liar! :-p
Can you guys demo the Wampler Sovereign? ~J
Hey, cool playing!!
But I guess one chord has the wrong discription:
It isn`t Gm/A# in the verse, it`s Gm/Bb! So its the third in bass. ;-)
Best greetings, Peter
Nice video
andy, how pickup height? more to bass or treble to the string? - help
Using a pick ;-)
Shut the hell up about flipping free pedal Friday!! We get it already!!!
Is that a 52 reissue or something else like an FSR?
This is a long shot, but what EQ did/do you use for this?
Rrrrrrrrrrrrrrok Zan!
Yudonhavtupudondaredlite.
Dozdayzarovah.
Yudonavtusellyurbodeytudanite.
ROCK SAND
Where have you got the backing track ;-)
Reminds me of Britta
Your use the bridge pickup position?
Yes, for this tune I’d use the bridge.
@@ProGuitarShopDemos Thanks bro
